A1: the dread of being selected to read out aloud π³
Great experiences at primary, secondary killed it. π§Hours spent reading text around the room; is that still a thing?
A1: long ago too!! Loved reading as a kid but know I was about decoding & def struggled with comprehension PAT tests guessed
A1 I was lucky, had reading big time at home and at early years in school, both my boys now big readers..phew

haha! Lots of silent reading for me too! And of course guided reading groups.
I was A-MAZING at reading in school. Remember a lot of read this journal story and then answer these qs on it.
As I got older, reading was more of a chore. In uni, I almost lost the love of it... ... but I got it back
Then spent the rest of my schooling & beyond catching up!
A1: did love bring home my reader folder and getting stickers for filling up a sheet!
Great point IMO, those blimin PATs killed lot of students' enthusiasm for reading, should be always about tests!
Scary to think many of the teaching strategies haven't updated either!
You'd read ahead to check your paragraph was clear of any tricky words!
I think this is why I am so passionate to provide memorable learning experiences for my Ss.. mine wasn't!
fully agree.. Pre-reading your section so you didn't muck up or stumbling through
I remember the school journals and used to love the 1 minute mysteries and pick-a-path.
I remember the school journals and used to love the 1 minute mysteries and pick-a-path.
For you kiwis here, has guided reading always been taught? My Cdn friends all agree, we don't remember having it in school

I used to love when I got on to Chapter books, very proud moment!
I used to love when I got on to Chapter books, very proud moment!
Reading Resilience is my middle name!
So true!!! It's scary to think... only 1 year of teacher training; falling into what I 'know' is a trap!
That's a good point, do we remember the things that came easy to us?
What happens with the kids who 'hate' reading? Is it 'reading' or the choices they are given/not given?
Great q Matt, I don't think any student hates reading, they hate the content not the skill, often afraid,
A1 I do remember reading texts that grabbed me at secondary tho - Go Ask Alice, Alive, etc
A1 I remember reading over our (long) summers at the library. Went there every day for those two whole months
Good morning Joe from the UK Sen teacher.
A1: confession. In year 12 my mum read the texts and wrote chapter summaries for me so I could keep up in class...
Likewise, once these habits form, great for life-long love.
It's something I still share with my Dad - a valuable thing to bond over
Morning Joe, great to have you and your expertise with us!
What is interesting is this now helps! It is a advantage on Twitter! I read in chunks! Photographs if you like!
A1 always loved reading, dad was an English teacher, books always around. Mum now owns children's bookshop
A2 Paper for books. Digital for news. Hard to tell why in a tweet
paper love the feel and smell
hahahahaha ... love this! Good for mum:) and love your honesty!
Lol - I remember reading my 1st chapter book and not realising the chapters had to be read in order! https://t.co/pona4kEk9Y
I used to love when I got on to Chapter books, very proud moment!
How cool on both a/cs. You had no choice but to read then!
A2. Digital reader! Read in chunks!
A2: slowly became a digital reader- used to print out readings!!!
agreed. Perhaps 'hate' is a strong word. Don't like because I don't know what is good to read?
A2 definitely hybrid.....download 2 or 3 books a week from the kindle store and if I love them buy them for my bookshelf
aww really wow! I don't actually know much about dyslexia but that makes sense
A2 I'm definitely a hybrid - love picking up second hand books but love the kindle too!
That's innovation for you! Well done.
she was a Librarian and teacher too - devastated I didn't share her 'love' for reading!
A2 hybrid mainly because i prefer reading books while travelling and off a screen with educative ebooks
.A2 Read everything digitally except for my novels.Nothing like holding a book in your hands aka James Patterson mysteries
They use hate because they don't know how to explain their feelings. It makes them feel bad
So we feed them what we like, not thinking that I am no longer a 14 yr old boy...most of the time!
All three. Depends on the situation.
A2 I can read the papers online but when it comes to book, paper for me, can't see myself doing the kindle.
A2 I can read the papers online but when it comes to book, paper for me, can't see myself doing the kindle.
A1- As an ESL child my reading experience was tough & full of shame. My parents had limited education https://t.co/kxYXznB5w1
A2 got to be 'the real thing' ... love the smell, the feel, the look... hmmmmm... books!
oooppsss in a dream there!
Reading hybrid here! I love reading on my iphone kindle app. Books cheaper so I can buy more of them. Still value paper thou
A2 rather read books, cereal packets, mags but use iPad to read most of the time nowadays.
Too many things to keep charged as it is!
Look at you now though. Power of resilience!
A2: I'm actually all for a bit of everything sometimes. Depends what context/environment I am learning in.
A2: I think I'm a hybrid. Don't mind either way.
A2 hybrid.. Like the feeling of a book/text e.g staff meeting readings so I can highlight or annotate but on my iPad reading2
Great point, it;s the tactile nature of the paper I love as well!
A2- definitely hybrid. Still have a genuine love of paper books but love & read a tonne of blogs w
A1 quite pleasant memories of reading in HS too, even if,at th time, it wasn't always welcome...uni, same, excpt more welcome
A1 Had a library in every classroom. teachers read really well to us and played us stories on the radio.
my eyes go kaka with most digital books
I've been known to have the paper and digital copies of a book, so I can read it whichever way takes my fancy
A1: loved it - we had milk, sat on mat inside or outside and got to read our own choice of book!
.A1 (bwds here) My reading expr in sch was grt.Gd reader pushed up to top rdg grps.Still love reading & learning thru rdg
not falling, slipping! we all do sometimes...
Hi Cathy and welcome! I used to love the audio stories, we saw the story for ourselves! A1
A1 Sorry for delay. Didn't really like reading at school but the perseverance of Ts paid off π it now https://t.co/ugYLLpF1sa
That's horrible. I admire my ESL/ESOL/EAL Ss. They work so hard, I make sure my other Ss know that
Hi Gail, wonderful recollection.
yeah I agree with you there. Mine do that sometimes too
trying to read Innovator's Mindset on kindle for the chat... it is awful.. no pages to flick, no notes to write
A2 Definite hybrid - paper, multimodal, digital - they're all important, serve diff purposes & cater to different learners
A2 Hybrid. Though I tend to only read kids/young adult books in hard copy. Adult books are heavier to hold so prefer kindle
loved listening to bad jelly the witch
Can you do novels etc off all three?
. Yes but have to put down for sch work sadly at times
A2: totally hybrid - Kinde for most reading but when studying still have to have printed text!
A2: Yes. Both and. Digital for work and paper for pleasure. The line between work/non-work is often blurred though.
Cool Steve, my boys go crazy over Richard Scarry even in 2016!
A2: Audio books are my style! Love listing in the car on way to work
Love going to the thrift stores and buying 3 books for a dollar. Surprisingly good finds some days
Interesting, did you have to learn to kindle read?
A2. Digital! Lately,I've been smashing out books on my kindle. Love to listen to the same book at the same time via audible
Seriously think you non-digital readers need to get with the times. I can take LOTR in my pocket man
yes!! My new routine is to read before bed - lose screen lol
I think as long as kids are reading who cares what forum - comics, mags, newspapers, books, - fostering a love of reading
Nice interpretation! Like the idea, do spend forever in the car. LOL
Nice interpretation! Like the idea, do spend forever in the car. LOL
A2: I find more of my uni stuff is screen based and not printed. Much more to read and imagine the trees! East to highlight
A2: Printed for academic reading- need the tactility of being able to highlight, scribble notes etc...
A2 Bit of both. Decided my preference for a novel is paper. Happy to read articles and news online https://t.co/6quLLXEPYH
A2 I really struggle reading non-ficton/textbooks digitally. I need the pictures to help me learn!
Some good research backs up your actions BTW.
Such a great tool audio books! Use them all the time https://t.co/IPyPpWPRiy
A2: Audio books are my style! Love listing in the car on way to work
A2. The combo helps with retention.
3 for $1! Awesome! I bought a heap at the Rotary Bookarama on Fri but $1 each! Ripped off! π
Same here, I do read the paper on my phone but now in non-linear fashion. A2
not that I remember, think I was a natural! :-)
Hi ! Patricia here from AKL, NZ
Hahaha. could try 2 fit it in.Might get strange looks - is that LOTR in your pocket or are you happy to see me?
Hybrid. New sci publications digital, old are hardcopy.
A1- I only felt comfortable with written language in my mid teens. It was a battle up to then https://t.co/vQL8qd33Rr
Look at you now though. Power of resilience!
fully agree so important and easier for me to process with notes, scribbles and highlights
hey Patricia:) nice to catch up
. I get mine 2nd hand Trade me & Fishpond.Bk goes everywhre wth me & my iphone
So true, you saw them through their words, intonations, pauses etc. Great reading!
I agree-offering lots of choice & sharing in varied forms helps reluctant readers find voice
A2 I have vision impaired S so learning new ways to provide reading opportunities - digital is the way to go in that respect
how did she go? I wish my mum did that for me. She just told me to get back to studying!
A2 forgot to mention that - love audio books too. Though sometimes I don't like the readers voice! https://t.co/N86L9CZCkf
A2: Audio books are my style! Love listing in the car on way to work
A1: I was a late bloomer.
Awesome answer so digital is a massive gain for you then!
Hi Jordan and welcome. Do you paper anymore?
And besides i have some books that are 200 to nearly 400 yrs old. I like having these in hardcover
Through i have SEEN kids who don't 'like' reading LOVE me reading and all of us discussing a story..love it
Great philosophy, some of their magazine have very high-level language and terminology.
A1: I've huge respect for ESL S -they're doing double the work to achieve. It's hard thinking in 1 lang & answer'g in another
Very true-graphic novels can help too.Whole new structure to learn-very symbolic and not just visual https://t.co/Be31GNRXXO
They use hate because they don't know how to explain their feelings. It makes them feel bad
A2: Used to be paper. Now hybrid. Mostly Kindle. Just the ease with which it can be used. And save trees.
Definitely! Our whole class is learning new skills to cater for these learning needs
thanks for the follow David - great to make a connection with other educators.
Thanks for the sentiment, but if I told you my true feelings about bitmojis, I'd be breaking all the rules for
I have throughly enjoyed reading the classics on digital format! Loved-Captain Blood, Solomon's mines https://t.co/shNqtCHfwu
A1 loved rereading the same book over&cover when I was younger. I don't think it matters what is read https://t.co/HpPHs0llbs
Nice, didn't think of the environmental angle. I have never read a book digitally...one day.
well, I lost some fllwrs w/ my boasting but I'm back up to 3,500 now, so.... sorry, I know that's not related...
A3: Relevant reading has to be part of S's day. Creating a love for reading. Not just for the sake of it.
A3 engagement - not finding it interesting or motivating, not understanding the text/message
A3: usually being forced to read something they have no enjoyment - need to install the enjoyment first!
that's enough cheek from you...get back to hosting!
I think listening takes a lot of the pressure off. They can just sit and enjoy (stories ARE fun after all)
A3: Repetition to gain confidence, then building on their decoding/comprehension skills.
Good point Brett, digital has enabled the classics to be more available!
congrats to your mum! I think more of that interaction would be great for students. Lets work this out together!
A2 Digital. Rarely paper. Audio books as I drive. Can access material in other languages. Can read anywhere on any device.
A3 Subject grabs their attention. I see this in my grandkids
Not for personal and rarely for prof reading. OIften encourage students to print things out and annotate them.
.Give them success model, praise read Bks to them show yr love of rdg. Praise progress & attempts. Show value of rdg to them
I was averse to it too. But once that sunshine hit my kindle and it looked like print, phew, I was sold.
A3. I have to split this! Two types of readers. Information readers & enjoyment readers! Purpose is critical to reason for
If I have my computer in a staff meeting, I have to apologise. But don't have to for drawing all over paper!
fully agree developing their own passion/enjoyment for reading is essential
Sharing some common multi-cultural forms can help eg. Myths, fairy tales, poetry-honouring their writings too
That's really interesting, will have to try!
*BOOM*... they can get lost in a story without the frustration... they LOVE it... & understanding is MAX!
No worries! quality over quantity!
A3: a culture where mistakes are ok & think alouds happen - gritty discussion & choice elements!!!!!
A resilient reader is one who will keep trying - practising skills & trying new books to find what they like.
Thanks Brent BTW some of my team saw you in AKL, very impressed!
Plus I dont have to have light on at nights to read. Plus no carrying around a dozen books on holidays!
A2books on paper and a lot of digital content on screen, kind of cause that's where it is. I love the codex and love the net
A3 Tough Q. They have 2 love reading be4 it gets tough. Have to enjoy stories, want 2 fight through difficulties 2 lrn 2 read
resilience. Learning and sharing are my reasons for reading resilience to this day! I do not read for enjoyment
A3 reading texts (books) that are not too challenging. If too difficult, they will lose interest and hope.
A3 to develop resilience in reading would mean good reading experiences after poor ones. Teachers could help pick content.
A3 A resilient reader develops reading stamina as well as a genuine appreciation for reading
A3:important to model the enjoyment - always make sure I read when Ss read talk to them about their choices.
.But can be both. I am! Love learning & love Fiction
YES! I used to love these, agency way before its time! Great share.
A3 resilient readers happen when you set up the conditions for them to feel safe to read out loud, mistakes and all
A2: Hybrid. Still like the turning of the pages in a book
ahhh CLASSIC! I remember the cover well, can't remember anything about the book itself. Gold.
a3 And the opposite. If a school reader, not being given something too easy or babyish. https://t.co/G9BWYeArut
A3 reading texts (books) that are not too challenging. If too difficult, they will lose interest and hope.
Yep. Plus (I can go on!) I get to mark it on Goodreads and keep track of all the books I am reading.
It's the habit and skill we're after not the content/context. Great point Joe!
A3: More reading. Finding something they love. Comprehending over just reading. Peer/teacher/home support. Lots of support!
We used to start with exploring books when I worked 1to1 with strugglers. Demystifying them through exploration and enjoyment
When I first saw them thought they were sacrilege because they did not have a proper ending! Students loved them.
Jangal, it looks like you're the one to give me a tutorial! I'm being schooled here!
True & boys tend to favour content reading, how to manuals, how stuff works > other forms.Use 4π of reading
LOTR digital? Just, just, just...NO! :)
And so easy to make now with digital tools!
A3 I think the principle of praising effort rather than aptitude is very important here
Absolutely. They need the opportunity to share stories from their culture. Sense of belonging is so important.
Hi Valerie so true, some boys won't read novels but give them a car guide and they're off!
A3: Have the opportunity to experience success (thinking junior primary)
CRITICAL POINT!!! https://t.co/FV4pwGrPdb
A3: More reading. Finding something they love. Comprehending over just reading. Peer/teacher/home support. Lots of support!
π Nah. But yes. I have read 3x books on Kindle in past 5 years than I have in 5 yrs before that. So there.
Nice Anna, the closer the text is to their world, the more they'll engage IMO. Welcome BTW as usual.
Used Asterix in French a lot. Ss are so excited to discover them.
Loved choose your own adventure! So many directions to choose from! Brilliant!
A4 Because reading is hard in school and when they hit a roadblock they need to know how to push through
A4: Reading changes us internally. For life, sometimes. Its an amazing transformation. Critical to growth.
Tintin and Asterix, it's becoming retro
A3 having good role models - seeing parents, teachers and others enjoying reading may encourage chn to enjoy and persevere
If you are not a resilient reader, you won't get up when you get knocked down. Reading is hard till you know how.
Asterix and Obelix were also favorites. Kids still love them today.
A3: I love the text to text, text to world, text to self concept. Help kids connect with the content! https://t.co/ZjQfcsuHrg
So many life lessons. Also, I learned to memorize the best paths :) Cause and effect chains
Indded. Getting books from Amazon is way easier than searching around bookshops. 1-click! :)
And just think how hard it is for adults to try and learn and not quit!
And just think how hard it is for adults to try and learn and not quit!
Popping out - need to walk dog before & read a couple of chapters - thanks for chat
Set me up for a life of gaming! Don't go there. Always ends poorly!!
That's fascinating, the benefits of
A4 Building resilient readers means developing Ss that take risks, are curious, have a go, make mistakes and try again!
A4: Where to start...because it if you are not a res reader a lot of doors will close to you!
Yes- adventure/sports stories too-had book of Hockey Haiku. My rel readers also loved Short reads
.Gve reluctant rder own browsing box wth all the books he'd recently read 2day/praised progress /he sat down/read all the bks
Thought I wld to die when daughter got into Babysitters. Wld read nothing else. Fortunately moved onto Neil Gaimon
I'm off to read my own book b4 bed - All the light we cannot see. Good so far. Read 3 books in the hols! See you guys!
what said!
https://t.co/nmwevuRmgL
A4 Building resilient readers means developing Ss that take risks, are curious, have a go, make mistakes and try again!
Not as fun though. & you miss that thrill of finding an awesome book for cheap at the thrift store
Nice, when one doesn't read, the learning just moves further away.
A4: because we may end up with a number of Donald Trumps in power! :-)
I became a huge fan of Archer short stories then his novels.
Short reads like in "Chicken soup for the teenage soul" w/young writers big hit
Short reads like in "Chicken soup for the teenage soul" w/young writers big hit
A4 need resilience as there are always barriers to overcome:crazy fonts, bad handwriting, tiny text, made up words
A4 resilient readers will make well informed choices in the future and not give up/fumble when they see big words.
A4: Unfortunately it is how they will be judged. Perhaps not by us, but by others. Dare I say NAPLAN? Aus ed policy?
Exactly! It is a fast moving world of info out there. It becomes obsolete faster than before https://t.co/rFeBSW25Tc
Nice, when one doesn't read, the learning just moves further away.
We all love to be able to relate to what we read and sometimes need kids some help finding it
Matt, In NZ we have National Standards in Literacy, Maths but every year!
You have the time for that much reading? Impressed. I'm lucky to get through a book a month now
.Mind u all my Ss have indiv Browsing boxes bt its the praise& u can do it that sparked his interestThn shared success wth Mum
A4: Esp in digi age, as need to be able to read critically and detect inaccuracies!
A4. It is a LIFE SKILL! In order to be a life long learner!
Great answer. Look at how many students read the Minecraft or Manga texts!
A4: We often treat poorer readers as less intelligent. Its really quite scary. Great communicators not always great readers.
Battery life is outstanding!! Amazing for travel.
This is a great point Gail! Reading = Digital Literacy and critical ability too.
Sorry Stuart. That's two weeks in a row I forgot to join . Third time lucky π
A great point and a situation often misread.
Dyslexics would be a perfect case in point.
A4 Constant reading opens up imagination, knowledge, linguistic facility, ideas. reading promotes self growth
A4 Constant reading opens up imagination, knowledge, linguistic facility, ideas. reading promotes self growth
we have fairies, princesses, ponies but also dinosaurs, Pirates, maps, Many books still highly gendered though
Fair enough. Still a lot. Well done.
A4: Seeing my 7yr old resilient reader, she isn't afraid to try and work out unfamiliar words. That's what you want for all.
No worries, fashionably late, that's all. Jump in. We're going great guns tonight.
No worries, fashionably late, that's all. Jump in. We're going great guns tonight.
I know! Plus getting to the right section. Bookmarking quotes that are awesome. I am a big fan. π
"Reading is dreaming with open eyes"
Takes you to another place:)
Kids NEED to feel this.
because reading is learning life lessons and roaming the world by only holding a book
A4 I think we need to develop resilient learners in general (not specifically readers) and delevop the love of reading in Ss
Love this line BUT I'd argue just as much Adults need to feel this too.
On a "Read the world" challenge this year. 25 books from 25 countries. On #7 now.
.A4 Still think its impt for 5yr olds to read hard copy bks as well as digital.Had sch visit 4 yr old 2day wanted to read a bk
totally agree. Spent much time with a guy who could not read/write but super intelligent. Struggled for jobs.
nice post Melanie, the readers would be part of the overall learner? A4
nice post Melanie, the readers would be part of the overall learner? A4
A4: Coloured dots on books for Ss learning to read. A motivator or harmful in building resilient readers??
teens love Tupac poetry. And also Freedom Writers Diary is fab.
Link to the list of books?
Asterix is retro AND cool!
Great q. 50/50 on this one. My eldest loves to read the same books over and over again!
i am ALL FOR IDEAS... korero mai!
Do you think paper books will go extinct one day? Like 8-tracks and casette tapes (mostly)
its more of experiencing a lot of things by only holding and reading a book
Great quote! So true. The world is in text if we choose to go travelling this way!
A5: Coloured dots on books for Ss learning to read. A motivator or harmful in building resilient readers??
Interesting how Tupac is now seen and revered more as a poet over a rapper in 2016.
A5. Busier home lives and parents not having the time to listen to reading out loud. Everyone loves a audience!
As A Mum I learnt you do whatever it takes to keep the reading going. pays off in the end
teachers not connecting, destroyed my sons love of reading
A4 yes - like what everyone's been saying - resilient readers make proactive learners make strong, successful, wise people
I agree, it's more a sensory experience as well is it not?
. Prob . I was thinking bt living thru tapes CDs & blu ray etc. my kids dont know a time wthout mobile phnes
audio books are great esp while living a busy life style!
A4 texts that are far too difficult. What's the point in tackling a word/phrase if the next sentence is also too difficult.
A5 Well the most obvious is NAPLAN requirements and expectations for starters!
A5: Not having a sound base and moving them up through levels too fast in junior levels
I Feel students have reduced going to the library as they can access content 'on the go'.not necessarily improving reading
Save-able hopefully, just got to find their niche?
Save-able hopefully, just got to find their niche?
A5 Parental, peer, teacher attitudes can have -ve effects, so can ability grouping, trackers on the wall, bad experiences
Really interesting point. I'd love to know how long our students read for compared to the past!
Really interesting point. I'd love to know how long our students read for compared to the past!
A5: Mindset is a big barrier, not to mention parents. It frustrates me when I hear parents talk about their reading woes.
A5 I think just the frantic pace of modern life for all of us - kids and adults
and not time for adults to read to them to model intonation, expression...
Likewise but there's something beyond the gansta element that gets the students reading big time.
A5 Learning/sight difficulties etc and a teacher not willing to adapt the text or find appropriate tools to help them read
A5 Lack of choice in reading, not being read to, having it forced down their throats every day due to Nat Standards
A5: Parents and the thinking that they can never get past the struggle. The more you read the better you get!
The students follow those around them for better or for worse. A5
Ques - does NZ/schools limit/censor choices of lit? Some young adult authors push boundaries (for Ps >Ss) 1/2
Ques - does NZ/schools limit/censor choices of lit? Some young adult authors push boundaries (for Ps >Ss) 1/2
A5 Time to read in peace and quiet
I think we need to understand that kids are 'reading' a lot...maybe not the way we used to read...but FB, blogs, other online
A5 we live in an age of immediacy and instant gratification and reading is a 'difficult pleasure'
A4: To develop skills to help in navigating new & uncertain situations. Reading builds confidence, curiosity
We're pretty conservative, least we have a pretty good range of cultural texts.

A5 A lack in resilience means Ss become cautious & hesitant learners -risk taking needs to be encouraged from the beginning!
Sad mate, little by little get them reading anything.
.A5 Ss not havng the opportunities to read bks eg digital only sch is a brrier. Not all Ss have them at home. We're a Duffy sch
A5 boring texts. 80% of the books I used at my int'l school were real books, not scheme books. Not sure if an option in NZ?

Great post Michaela, reading is a pathway that can be otherwise blocked!
A5 Do a Michael Jordan - climb over, under , around. Barriers? What barriers ? has to be the attitude
A5 Do a Michael Jordan - climb over, under , around. Barriers? What barriers ? has to be the attitude
So true! But how is this measurable? That's the question!
do we HAVE to measure it?
True, but having parents that say that they were bad at...doesn't help them become resilient readers.
Not sure, I tend to read far more in short, sharp bursts e.g. read the Herald online 10mins max.
Thanks I'm out now! Great conversation.
A5: being allowed to struggle and not encourage by all stakeholders, teachers, parents, peers ...
You're right. In many case, they won't go near a book!
Can you measure enjoyment? Can you measure it other ways. We try, but not total picture
I don't believe so but most schools would say yes..?!
yup! I think its our job as teachers to encourage risk taking!
A1: I was always reading. I had a fab yr 4 tchr who read Watership Down to the class. Best memory.
my district was too but didn't always mean restrictive Eg- is there approved list?
They are always on Google and Wikipedia and so much reading is free online
Nice post, all it takes is one spark to light the eternal reading flame!
A5 I think it may be interesting and worthwhile expanding our idea of what reading is...it's not just books anymore!
Need to build patience with reading
No, in NCEA we get wonderful freedom of choice. I think in AUS, set text lists I recall.
when I think about it... kids are reading heaps... like said might be short bursts on a variety..
I agree and as much as possible diversified reading!
thanks for following David, we created a simple app for , feel free to try it. link in the bio
A5: Too much irrelevant/little value reading. Somtimes turns them off of quality reading too. Sad consequence.
Exactly. It's almost like the roots of a tree- through reading, so much more becomes accessible
Sign of the times but you're right reading is reading.
Sign of the times but you're right reading is reading.
on fb, tumblr, etc Ts and Ss are constantly reading and writing creating and responding - more than in the past actually
Goes back to what we were saying before - different reading platforms for different learners
Great point, reading must be for a purpose and texts must also be "fit-for-purpose".
I have a list of all the things to incl in a class reading space and it's way more than just books! https://t.co/c0LZ6G8zOs
A5 I think it may be interesting and worthwhile expanding our idea of what reading is...it's not just books anymore!

A6 Digital resources give Ss more choice what 2 read, which gets more buy in & increases enjoyment. Will want 2 work harder
Different paths but ultimately leading to common destinations. Allows for personal choice.
A6: makes it easier to access a range of reading material - also helps Ss be creators not just consumers.
I remember this happening in NZ due to the "magic" elements!
Indeed. I think back to my own reading and the ones I forgot most easily were the ones without purpose.
Personalisation at its finest!
A6. Reading and communicating are inherently linked, critical that a deficit in one area does not mean communication failure!
It is a good strategy for some Ss
So true and the ones with purpose we often revisit again and again!
A6: More access to personal interests
Byproducts are prob more important to a happy life, I'd say. Hard 2 measure tho
A6 has to be combination (hybrid) reading options and help making reading choices to see steady scaffolding of reading levels
yes... the depth of understanding, meanings, language, responses to it
A6 Accessability, freedom of choice, variety, platform
Eeep. How to multitask all the Twitter awesomeness on Minecraft, Episode & great new connections at

Digital resources make reading available w/o tangible check-out/renewal & w self-paced access
You said it. Such reading redefines our whole experience with every revisit. Priceless moments r created.
Great point Paul and welcome. More control over the reading context, I like this concept.
A6 can't remember name of resource, but there is an iPad app with kids novels written in dyslexic friendly fonts
A6. Cont. this means that there are many digital responses, tools & skills that build a poor readers communication confidence.
I know of the one you mean, someone will know it! the team is pretty smart!

Same text read at diff stages in life create new meanings. That comes from a lifetime of resilient reading.
I did not even know there were fonts that were dyslexic friendly. Will search for some tomorrow
Nice point Mark. Confidence has to preceed growth in reading capability IMO. A6
A6 DM facilitates engagement w/ txts in all kinds of creative ways. A book is kind of static thing - DM makes it dynamic
A6: Digital resources provide more opportunities for understanding, through audio books, follow along text and repeating text
Thanks and all ! Good night!
A5 Can be over analysis of text. Ensure that the majority of reading students engage in is for enjoyment
A2: favourite paper but all 3 - dependent on context/time restraints.
A6 opens doors for those not interested/no access to real books
A6 students have the freedom to engage with txts in their own way
In NZ, more books were sold last year than for ages. Believed to be that digital readers also buying more books too!

Nice point. Enjoyment and engagement must always be primary foci surely. A5
Another great chat! Solidified much READING into thought! THANKS GREAT PLN! β€οΈlearning with you!
Agreed, autonomy is an important factor in motivation. Giving Ss choice (w/in constraints) can be v powerful
We did a survey in the library here and 70% of Ss preferred paperback books and 15% preferred e-books.
A6 just as the best Ts are learners, the ability DM gives students to create, will empower them as readers
cheers team loved this! thanks gotta catch some zzzs
More likely to stay reading and grow through agency.

My school had several borrowable kindles loaded with books esp for boys - high interest age appropriate but low ability.
A6 Audiobooks. Teach them to love the stories and create desire to access through reading.
Thanks for a great chat. Sorry I was a bit late!
