Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
A1. Rubrics make my job so much easier and more objective when grading student work. Ss also know exactly what they will be graded on. No secrets. #LATICchat
#masterychat participants - if you are able to join two chats at once... join #LATICchat - talking about #rubrics and pushing S thinking - alignment of topics!!
A1 Began using a Rubric for the ALU as well as grading Rubrics. Has allowed my students to reach farther and inquire deeper into our topics of study. #LATICchat
A1 I was in at @TropicIslesElem school last week and Ss were excited to tell me they "almost messed up but then they remembered to use the rubric and that got us back on track. We won't make that mistake again." #OutOfTheMouthsOfBabes#UseTheRubric#LATICchat
#LATICchat
I am working on making a Rubric to go along with an ALU - I am always looking for ideas for tasks that tie into the Common Core Algebra curriculum (NY state)
A1 I love Ss self assessing. It is so insightful when they underestimate themselves or settle for a low score. It helps to have targeted feedback conversations. #LATICchat
A3 we need to assess Ss at high levels to know what our Ss really know. Think PBL, authentic, relevant tasks. These can be reflected in the rubrics #LATICchat
Q3) TRUE integration of multiple content areas - @Ker912@stacyl315@Mrgarrettrox - Mars Outpost combining ELA, Math, and Science Standards in one product #LATICchat
A3) Expert criteria can involve taking a stance. Critical thinking is present with justification. Moving from a knowledge factory to a thinking classroom. #LATICchat
A3) I work in a district with a lot of diversity. I include the translation of what they produce into Spanish and Creole for students who need it. #LATICchat
A4) I haven't tried the executive functioning in rubrics yet, but that is what grabbed my attention from my #LearnFwd17 Session. I am eager to learn from you all! #LATICchat
A4. Rubrics share Ts expectations and give students a "checklist" of sorts. There is no guessing. Being able to see what they have done and where they need to go creates successful feelings throughout the process. #LATICchat
A5) A nested rubric is when you refer to one rubric inside another ... like ... "scores at least in Practitioner column of the rubric for argumentative writing." #LATICchat
A5) One example: Anytime Ss are writing in any content area, a nested rubric allows Ts and Ss to have common expectations for the type of writing and focus the rest of the rubric on the application of content standards. Raises the bar in every classroom, not just ELA. #LATICchat
#LATICchat Here is an example of a nested rubric from our #STEMLATIC workshop. The workshop rubric has 7 rows, in the first, it references the ALU (authentic learning unit) - Ts use this year round to assess new units
Nested Rubrics -- you and your colleagues can create generic rubrics for performances such as graph design, lab reports, types of writing, etc. and then reference them in another rubric. #LATICchat
A6) Our Ss are working on knowing themselves as a learner. What are their learning preferences? How do they learn best? They could work to design a reflection rubric. #LATICchat
A7 Rubrics reflect the different strategies and structures in a LATIC. My students provide new curricula resources on our Oasis Board it is in the expert column on the Rubric. #LATICchat
A7 Rubric is roadmap to solving the task, Should Drive Ss to activity list to create their learning path, and definitely help them identify if they need help or are an expert #LATICchat
A6) Ss can design rows of a "Great Student Rubric" to guide their expectations as learners in the classroom community - example: https://t.co/xTDTxug1qQ#LATICchat
A7 Rubrics create a vocabulary that all Ss are familiar with. To listen to their peer discussions sounds like they are truly intellectuals other Ts or Admin might need to ask for clarification as to what they are talking about. #LATICchat
A6) If you use a Great Student Rubric (https://t.co/hExbyz5aBe) you can have students design them ... or design a row that focuses on what they want to set as a goal #LATICchat
A7) Students working on the Expert level can be on the Expert Board. The resource table can evolve to provide what they need as they progress through an ALU. #LATICchat
A7) Home Groups! Engaging Ss in heterogenous groups to set goals, plan their time, share resources, etc. will drive them back to the rubric for guidance. #LATICchat
A hyperlinked rubric is when you use a digital rubric and for each set of criteria, have a link to a page that offers a variety of learning activities ... it ends up replacing the activity list, but is ONLY good to start after students are familiar with activity lists. #LATICchat
A8. Hyperlinking anything (rubrics, additional information, exemplars) can only provide students with added support. Linking information means it is available if the Ss have access. #LATICchat
YES! Imagine hyperlinking to teacher-made podcasts and a collection of resources for Ts to access the content. #UniversalDesignForLearning in action! #LATICchat
CQA This chat has lit the fuse I’m excited to improve my Rubrics, allow S’s to develop areas, Nest Rubrics across curriculum and hyperlink. Gotta get after it! #LATICchat
CQ) Student voice for sure. I want to explore rubrics that lead students in the right direction at their own pace. That may be a perfect application of a hyperlink! #LATICchat

@teacherschair isn’t here but I bet she’s up for the hyperlinked rubric challenge. We are getting ready to write a rubric on the noble citizens of Upper Nyack Elementary #LATICchat
Nothing like checking Twitter notifications while standing in line at the grocery store. I saw this one and rushed home jo join. What a great chat! #LATICchat Thanks all!
