Q1) What is student ownership of learning and why is it important? #gtchat
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 4 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1) Student ownership of learning is when a student becomes invested in his own learning; the realization that learning is of personal value to oneself. #gtchat
  • GiftedHF Jan 4 @ 8:11 PM EST
It's the difference btwn the adults setting goals for them and the students setting their own goals (or at east buying in). #gtchat

  • MyTBP Jan 4 @ 8:12 PM EST

  • mrsbennahaas Jan 4 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: I can share what student ownership is NOT. Student ownership is NOT as same as work ethics. I think we ask of our gifted learners to demonstrate "work ethics" and call it "own up to your learning". #gtchat
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 4 @ 8:13 PM EST

  • JSulsky Jan 4 @ 8:15 PM EST
S ownership of learning means Ss select (with T guidance) content to be learned and modalities in which to learn. It’s important because students will likely do advanced studying and work in domains of strength such as mathematical reasoning or extemporaneous speaking #gtchat
  • forthekiddoes Jan 4 @ 8:15 PM EST
A1 Student ownership of learning is self-directed where Ts share the map, but Ss plot their own journey. #gtchat
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 4 @ 8:15 PM EST

  • AguilarGHS Jan 4 @ 8:22 PM EST
A1 I think student ownership is directly related to student choice. Student choice is directly related to student motivation through relevancy and interest. #gtchat
  • JeremyDBond Jan 4 @ 8:22 PM EST
Ok, so I’m thinking we’re not talking about showing pride in working for its own sake, but more driven by learning about the things they want to? #gtchat

  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 4 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2) Gifted students may or may not be motivated to take ownership of their own learning contrary to popular belief. If their strengths are not academic, they may have little interest in school. #gtchat
  • forthekiddoes Jan 4 @ 8:23 PM EST
In order to lead with interest? We have to build the relationships so we know what they are interested in. Things like that need to marinate with Littles, especially. They aren’t always sure what their passions are! #gtchat
  • mrsbennahaas Jan 4 @ 8:24 PM EST

  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 4 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2) Motivation to take ownership of their learning may require educators to allow #stuvoice and choice; Socratic instruction; self-reflection; less dependence on planned lessons; less testing, more requests for feedback. #gtchat

Q3) What are some examples of students owning their learning? #gtchat
  • JSulsky Jan 4 @ 8:26 PM EST
A2 I motivate GT Ss to have choice by designing open-ended learning activities. For example my colleague @drcaitking and I give Ss choice in how to express Vocabulary words - they can write, illustrate, code, create (virtual and physical) games, teach family etc #gtchat
  • MrsMoorman1 Jan 4 @ 8:27 PM EST
A2: Provide your students with fredom of choice as it relates to relevant topics that spark their interest, process and product. Equip them with (21st century) tools to express themselves. Help them monitor their progress (procrastinators/perfectionists) #gtchat

#gtchat. Joining late. I taught G/T students for many years, and I agree project based learning on authentic self-selected topics is the ideal.
  • GiftedHF Jan 4 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3) In our GHF Online classes, we guide, share knowledge, but the kids have a ton of leeway on discussion, projects, interest, etc. And they aren't there unless they want to be. That's good for everyone. #gtchat

  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 4 @ 8:35 PM EST
A4) Technology must enhance authentic learning; not just replication of traditional learning. Gifted students may find building a computer or robot much more valuable than simply sitting and staring at a computer screen. #gtchat
  • AnnaCalven Jan 4 @ 8:36 PM EST

A6 I think one of the areas that needs to be focused on first is the delivery of instruction. We need to move from a "sage on a stage" method to a "facilitator" or even "co-learner/co-leader" model. That can only be done through student choice #gtchat
