Global #gtchat Powered by TAGT is a weekly chat on Twitter that takes place on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT and 5 p.m. PT in the U.S. For one hour, parents, educators, advocates and experts in the field of gifted and talented gather to share resources, links, authentic life experiences and insights about gifted issues.
Hello, I'm Benna, Middle School #Giftedspecialist@chccs, Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools, NC. I collaborate with classroom teachers to serve the middle school gifted pop #gtchat
Lurking to learn? Say ‘hi’ and let us know when you are joining us from. Then view a livestream from Participate Learning at https://t.co/1zR97oWQw0#gtchat
A1) Student ownership of learning is when a student becomes invested in his own learning; the realization that learning is of personal value to oneself. #gtchat
A1: I can share what student ownership is NOT. Student ownership is NOT as same as work ethics. I think we ask of our gifted learners to demonstrate "work ethics" and call it "own up to your learning". #gtchat
A1) Guiding their own learning path instead of conforming to specific expectations. They’ll need to guide their own learning throughout their lives. #gtchat
S ownership of learning means Ss select (with T guidance) content to be learned and modalities in which to learn. It’s important because students will likely do advanced studying and work in domains of strength such as mathematical reasoning or extemporaneous speaking #gtchat
Although when Ts do adult learning - at PD, independent coursework, conferences, etc. it should provide reminders to Ts about how to (and how not to) make learning meaningful for students #gtchat
A1 - Isn’t it the ultimate goal to create a classroom culture where students want to learn because they see a personal value in it? This intrinsic buy-in makes learning meaningful and relevant. #gtchat
A2 Build a relationship with your Ss so you can create relevant moments that allow for choice. Foster a pervasive thinking classroom that celebrates failure as learning! #gtchat
A2) If there's something you feel they *must* learn at that time, find ways to build it into what already interests them. Give them a say, a way to relate, and some control. #gtchat
A1 I think student ownership is directly related to student choice. Student choice is directly related to student motivation through relevancy and interest. #gtchat
Ok, so I’m thinking we’re not talking about showing pride in working for its own sake, but more driven by learning about the things they want to? #gtchat
A2) Gifted students may or may not be motivated to take ownership of their own learning contrary to popular belief. If their strengths are not academic, they may have little interest in school. #gtchat
In order to lead with interest? We have to build the relationships so we know what they are interested in. Things like that need to marinate with Littles, especially. They aren’t always sure what their passions are! #gtchat
A2: Intrinsic motivation has to do with the learning process and purposeful product. #Humanized rubric will allow students to enjoy its process and find meaning in the product
#gtchat
A2) Gifted students may or may not be motivated to take ownership of their own learning contrary to popular belief. If their strengths are not academic, they may have little interest in school. #gtchat
A2) Motivation to take ownership of their learning may require educators to allow #stuvoice and choice; Socratic instruction; self-reflection; less dependence on planned lessons; less testing, more requests for feedback. #gtchat
A2) But that just means that what is offered isn't the right fit for that student. Kids can learn all kinds of things from multiple directions. Why limit them to the predetermined curriculum? #gtchat
A2 I motivate GT Ss to have choice by designing open-ended learning activities. For example my colleague @drcaitking and I give Ss choice in how to express Vocabulary words - they can write, illustrate, code, create (virtual and physical) games, teach family etc #gtchat
A2: Provide your students with fredom of choice as it relates to relevant topics that spark their interest, process and product. Equip them with (21st century) tools to express themselves. Help them monitor their progress (procrastinators/perfectionists) #gtchat
A3) One of the best examples of students owning their learning can be found in Project-based Learning – learning proposed, directed and executed by the student. A personalized approach to PBL is especially appealing to gifted Ss. #gtchat
A3) When @EcoScienceGirl was 7, she wanted a Victorian era bday party. She spent 6 mos doing research on games, decor, food, etc. She learned a ton of history in context. #gtchat#homeschool
A3 when learning about Renaissance inventions, Ss create inventions and choose to create 3D model (artists), newspaper articles (journalists), shark tank pitches (businesspeople) and commercials (entertainers) #gtchat
A3) When my son was 8yo he didn't care at all abt learning Hebrew, so the aide spent the time w him translating Pokemon names into Hebrew. That caught his interest! #gtchat#Homeschooling
A3) Another example of student owned learning is the creation of digital portfolios which can showcase their work. Portfolios may take the form of blogs, videos, or displaying art/music projects. #gtchat
A3) In our GHF Online classes, we guide, share knowledge, but the kids have a ton of leeway on discussion, projects, interest, etc. And they aren't there unless they want to be. That's good for everyone. #gtchat
And when you think about it, students shouldn’t have to “buy in” to their own learning any more than most of us have to buy into eating chocolate cake. If learning isn’t driven by desire, it’s not student-driven. #gtchat
A1 - Isn’t it the ultimate goal to create a classroom culture where students want to learn because they see a personal value in it? This intrinsic buy-in makes learning meaningful and relevant. #gtchat
A3) Yes! The GHFO art teacher helps the kids put together an dne dof term online art show each semester <3 For mythology one yr, my son built a lego steampunk set of the Odyssey, then made a video of him telling the story, #gtchat#Homeschooling
A3) Students can take ownership of their learning by building presentation skills either something as simple as PP to participating in a performance-based environment such as a recital. #gtchat
Q3 In my classroom, many students show their ownership through personalized projects to demonstrate learning. Their engagement in the process is just as important as their end product. #gtchat
A3) I witnessed the overwhelming sense of student ownership on student talent shows. Students' lives were the text, performance was their interpretation, and the audience was the community that honored and celebrated its creation. #gtchat
A4) Technology must enhance authentic learning; not just replication of traditional learning. Gifted students may find building a computer or robot much more valuable than simply sitting and staring at a computer screen. #gtchat
A3 For choice of assessment, I had certain outcomes I was required to assess, but I would let G/T Ss choose which outcomes had heavier weight--on creative presentation or written expression, for example #gtchat
A4) Technology plays a tremendous role in S selection of learning. It allows Ss to access content information at their level and platforms like Google Classroom are awesome for giving Ss extensive menu options to choose from #gtchat
A4 I think technology can provide limitless boundaries for learning. Ss have limitless opportunities to create to explore to share with a wider audience! #gtchat
A4) Technology can play a vital role in the ownership of learning when used as a problem-solving tool rather than ‘the’ answer. Objectives and goals need to be personalized via technology. #gtchat
A4- I say all this bc I think people think of personalization for GT learners with tech when we can provide authentic experiences across time and space as well #gtchat
Technology is a tool, and choices must be offered for programs, apps, websites, etc. to be used, or not. I also really encouraged students to present tech. alternatives of their own choosing #gtchat
A4) Technology enhances how students collect and share information. It can provide a sense of community with like-minded, intellectual peers who can work together; an oft-missed opportunity for gifted students in the past. #gtchat
Q4 Technology is a tool. It can be important. It can also be misused. Because our students are part of the connected generation, technology can be a great way for students to enter into ownership #gtchat

A5) Virtually all work does not become valuable until it is presented/showcased. Students need to learn how to best present their ideas/projects in a meaningful way. This is a precursor for professional success in life as an adult. #gtchat
A5 My Presentation Tools page https://t.co/m2Fix8GagP Give students a choice of tools and set them free to show their peers and you how well they can present their learning using these tools and presentation skills. #gtchat
A5- presentation skills are necessary for a connected learner. It is important to have great ideas, but if they are shared and understood they go underutilized #gtchat
A5 My Presentation Tools page https://t.co/m2Fix8GagP Give students a choice of tools and set them free to show their peers and you how well they can present their learning using these tools and presentation skills. #gtchat
I think you’re misunderstanding me. There are assessments we are mandated to use, too. But I offer choice if how learner’s are assessed on other processes or tasks that are not part of that collective assessment. #gtchat
A5) But this can take a variety of forms - esp in the world of technology. It doesn't have to involve standing at a podium and speaking publicly. #gtchat#2ekids
A5) By learning presentation skills, it takes their learning to another level – kicks it up a notch! It also hopefully provides an authentic audience for their work. This in turn amplifies their motivation factor. #gtchat
Q5 21st century jobs will require students to be able to communicate their ideas, experiences and passions clearly and comfortably. Presentation practice is important in develop those skills. #gtchat
A5 Presentation skills teach more than meets the eye. My 7 year olds produce a live, daily news program and the skills they are gaining are those they’ll keep for a lifetime. #gtchat
A5) You can be the smartest person in the world but if you can’t communicate with others then nobody will know. That is why GT programs MUST provide opportunities for authentic sharing of work. We invite parents to see S debates, philosophy roundtables and sonnet readings #gtchat
A5) The 21st Century also offers a variety of platforms through which to communicate. Presentation doesn't have to involve exclusively public speaking. #gtchat
A4: Technology can have a huge impact on student ownership of learning; access to resources, networking potential, means to create diverse products etc #gtchat
A5- quick plug for @newtechnetwork oral communication rubric https://t.co/I2yyfKOCrE We also emphasize written communication and my campus is exploring more with visual communication as well #gtchat
#gtchat@Q5 Presenting their work gives students the chance to prove their learning by teaching it to their peers. If they are able to relay knowledge to others, then we know they have successfully mastered the topic.
Good question. Teachers still have a role when students own their learning—perhaps helping them make the connections to what they relate to.
As for your unnatural view of chocolate cake, can’t help you there. 😏 #gtchat
A5) But that's only one of many options. They can share their knowledge in a variety of ways, not all of which include public speaking in front of large groups. #gtchat
A6) Wow. That's a BIG question. I think a more systemic change is needed. We need to stop treating kids like they all have the same needs and goals and spend a lot more time seeing them for who they are. #gtchat#2ekids
A6) Instruction needs to evolve into facilitation. Meaningful learning and ownership of that learning will be enhanced by teacher led deep-level, thought provoking questioning and then thoughtful listening to provide feedback. #gtchat
A6 I think we have to take the curriculum and be discerning. I could list changes for my learners, but the ability to find the relevancy in ANY curriculum is important. Focus on process, the product will evolve. #gtchat
A6) I'd add to that the opportunity for the child to lead to the extent they are able. And lose the cookie cutter approach. The world has changed & schools need to take note of that. #gtchat
Agree completely! There are limited things we can do “in the trenches” but that’s where the most important curriculum decisions need to be made! #gtchat

A6) Personalized Learning, no specific subjects, no same age grade levels, no set curriculum so Ss can learn when and how they want/need. https://t.co/g7vWuEgRVz#gtchat
A5: It's not enough to let students do the presentation. Presentation skills have to be taught, researched, and performed because in a way, it's a storytelling and persuasion.#gtchat

A6) Students should be provided with an environment that encourages imagination, student choice, freedom and time to explore interests, and finally a way to showcase their learning. #gtchat
A6 I think one of the areas that needs to be focused on first is the delivery of instruction. We need to move from a "sage on a stage" method to a "facilitator" or even "co-learner/co-leader" model. That can only be done through student choice #gtchat
Our next chat will be on Thursday January 11th at 8E/7C/6M/5P US and Friday 12th January at 2 PM NZDT/Noon AEDT/1AM UK. Our topic will be “Gifted Education on a Budget.” #gtchat
