Hi #eduar! I’m Courtney from Van Buren, and my inspirational song is “It’s a New Day” by https://t.co/mnaL7ztTnT. So glad to be able to “stop by” tonight!
A1: From the day I entered kindergarten, that's all I ever wanted to be. My little sister, dogs, cats, and stuffed friends got quite the education! #EduAR
I'm Kelly and I am a 5th grade ELA teacher in Missouri. Always looking for ways to improve and learn new things even as I'm completing my 24th year of teaching. #EduAR#path2serendipity

A1) The children I met on my travels throughout Latin America: their strife, their struggles, and their stories...that’s what led me to teaching. #eduar
A1: I despised school as a student, and never wanted to set foot in a school again after graduation. I had to volunteer in a classroom for a college class and was HOOKED! Felt tremendous responsibility to make school a different experience for Ss. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
Q2: I was almost fired my first year of teaching because it went so badly. What did you learn the hard way early in your career? #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
I had been told I would be a great teacher, but I actually was a manager first. The favorite part of my job was educating others. I helped with some children with some needs and then decided I might want to be SPED. #EduAR
First I got ELED, then I was 'forced' to go back and get SPED, but it was a somewhat willing force. I love it and would not return to a regular room, but I miss some pieces occasionally. #EduAR
Kim from Maui, Hawaii - Instructional Coach....Jumping in late AND not sure if I can stay long but could not miss the awesome #edusistas of #EduAR AND @AllysonApsey ...such serendipity
A1: Great question. I always knew. I made the neighbors sit in my driveway while I read to them when I was only 8. I was also inspired by some really awesome educators. #Path2Serendipity#eduar
A2: I learned to make my classroom a need-satisfying environment for my students. Ss will meet their needs in the classroom, either within the functions of what we ask them to do, or disrupting the functions of the classroom. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A1: My gateway drug into teaching was coaching basketball. Took a coaching job at a HS, realized I loved working with kids, stopped fighting it, went back to night school for credential. Rest is #tlap history! #EduAR

A1: I didn’t have the best school experience! I wanted to be a teacher to make school different for my students than what it was for me... to make learning relevant & inspire their curiosity & a love for learning. #EduAR
A2) I entered the profession non-traditionally. It wasn’t until my fifth year of teaching when I attended my first AP Institute that I realized I had been doing it all wrong. It’s imperative that we get high-quality, personalized PD to teachers early and frequently! #EduAR
RT Q2: I was almost fired my first year of teaching because it went so badly. What did you learn the hard way early in your career? #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A1: I was working a summer job at a gold mine in the Yukon. Felt like I was destroying beautiful river beds. Next summer, I started teaching ecology at the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre. Loved it and went on to my teacher education, masters and now admin. Love it! #EduAR
A1: I didn’t have the best school experience! I wanted to be a teacher to make school different for my students than what it was for me... to make learning relevant & inspire their curiosity & a love for learning. #EduAR
A good friend of mine (ex-Superintendent)....once told me...if you are making everyone happy then you may not be doing your job! #eduar#Path2Serendipity
I learned that sometimes you must compensate because it is not always a great fit for my personality even though it is a great fit in other ways. We are not always an understanding group. #EduAR

Q2: I was almost fired my first year of teaching because it went so badly. What did you learn the hard way early in your career? #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A2) I tried to do too much. This included a long drive, extra curricular activities and taking college classes beyond what I could Manage. My running suffered and I stopped reading and having time for a life outside of school. #EduAR
A2) Doing what is best and right for kids will not always make you the popular educator. People will support you behind close doors but not in the open. #EduAr
A2 I learned that an egg shaped jaw breaker just won’t hatch, even if you keep it at the perfect temp in the most awesomely dad crafted incubator for days and days! 😂Yep, I learned pretty quick I was going to make some big mistakes but my kids would love me anyway. #EduAR
A1: Ever since I can remember I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to inspire others. I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to make others believe in themselves. I wanted to change lives for the better. I wanted to be a teacher!#eduAR#Path2Serendipity#LoveLiteracyLearning
A2: I learned to step back and let my students do the thinking! It’s easy to teach as we were taught, but so important to find better ways. I always try to think from a student’s perspective.. how would they learn best? How would I have wanted to learn? #EduAR
YES! I learned that avoiding them is often selfish because we are caring more about not making ourselves uncomfortable than about what is right for our students. #Path2Serendipity#EduAR
Q2: I was almost fired my first year of teaching because it went so badly. What did you learn the hard way early in your career? #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A2: In my early years, I learned more about myself. About becoming supportive and how fortunate I was growing up with my amazing supportive parents. #EduAR
I learned not to personalize failure...turn it into feedback. Pirates don't curse the wind...they read it and adjust their sails. Student feedback is the wind of our classrooms. Read it. #tlap#EduAR
A1: #eduAR#Path2Serendipity I always like to say that teaching chose me. Life took me on a journey that placed me in a school and I realized I never wanted to leave. So I went back to school and followed my heart.
A2: I learned that I needed to a) ask for help and would not always have the answers; b) that I could find joy when it was not ABOUT me AND the silo I created but about relationships, connections and that Ss first by building on the "us". #EduAR

Q3: CRAFT-ing a need-satisfying classroom is in the First Stop along The Path to Serendipity. The A in CRAFT stands for “Ask, don’t tell”. Tell us how you incorporate student voice into your classroom or school. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A2: Its not about what I liked to do. It's about what the kids connect with and find relevant! Make learning fun and engaging but make sure it meets their needs. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A2: I learned to step back and let my students do the thinking! It’s easy to teach as we were taught, but so important to find better ways. I always try to think from a student’s perspective.. how would they learn best? How would I have wanted to learn? #EduAR
A2: #eduAR#Path2Serendipity I have performance anxiety. No matter how many years or how much practice I've had, when I have people watching that I know are judging, I freeze! Still happens. I'm learning to relax and believe in myself and my abilities.
Q2: I was almost fired my first year of teaching because it went so badly. What did you learn the hard way early in your career? #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A2: not everyone was as excited as I was to embrace change & implement innovative ideas. I was told that my energy was overwhelming others & that it wouldn’t last. I had to justify what was best for Ss - it wasn’t easy! #EduAR#Path2Serendipity#LoveLiteracyLearning

It is a work in progress, so much easier to tell, but we need to ask. I have done a lot of coaching this year for the students to tell their perspective and coaching adults to understand why that is so important and that sometimes there is so much more than facts. #EduAR
Q3: CRAFT-ing a need-satisfying classroom is in the First Stop along The Path to Serendipity. The A in CRAFT stands for “Ask, don’t tell”. Tell us how you incorporate student voice into your classroom or school. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A3: #eduAR#Path2Serendipity I always loved making my classroom feel like their room as well. Every year I would ask students to bring me a picture from home so I could place it around the room. I had areas decorated with pictures/frames of students. Room Décor!

A3: I learned early on to answer a question with a question. 😉 for example, "so what does number 2 say?" Or "what do you think that means?" I wanted to make sure they took the time to read and try before they asked me. #Path2Serendipity#EduAR

A3: A teacher & I facilitate a future leaders club to empower student leaders in our building! Ss also work on passion projects, genius hour projects, & lead the morning news show. I ask students for feedback on how to improve our school. They have great ideas!! #EduAR
A3:I ask my Ss questions & then listen to what they have to say. I make instructional decisions based on their responses & make sure they know that I heard them. When Ss realize that you’re listening- they will open up completely! #EduAR#Path2Serendipity#LoveLiteracyLearning
A3: This is what I've have been working on this year and will continue. I've tried to give kids more choice in what they want to learn and what they think they need to learn and to end the year they are telling me how they would teach 5th grade writing if they were me. #eduAR
Q4: The F in CRAFT stands for “fun”. School can’t always be fun...or can it? Describe how you make school fun for your students. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A3 letting them select songs for class playlists, asking them how we can gamify a lesson, allowing them to make choices for process and products #EduAR
A4: We first need to find out what is fun to our students--ask them, try things out, get their feedback. Fun and learning can go hand in hand! Keep in mind that success is pretty much always fun! #Path2Serendipity#EduAR
I try to find the little things that bring smiles. I build a sense of community or family in the room and build on that it may not always be your favorite, but that it might be someone else's. #EduAR
Q4: The F in CRAFT stands for “fun”. School can’t always be fun...or can it? Describe how you make school fun for your students. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A4) This is so hard because students interpret fun differently. That’s where you have to go back to student choice. What is fun for one might be painful to another #eduAR
RT Q4: The F in CRAFT stands for “fun”. School can’t always be fun...or can it? Describe how you make school fun for your students. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A4: I use the language they are use too! Technology! When used with a purpose, carefully selected tech tools can make the learning fun and can turn students into creators not just consumers!! #Path2Serendipity#EduAR
A4: #eduAR#Path2Serendipity I think this has to do with two things: Teacher's personality and creativity. If i had to sit in a room for 8 hours listening to a teacher speak, it would remind me of Charlie brown's teacher. WHAA WHAAA. Become your own dream teacher.
Q4: The F in CRAFT stands for “fun”. School can’t always be fun...or can it? Describe how you make school fun for your students. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
Q4: By making learning relevant! Kids don’t want to do worksheets. They want to solve problems & think critically! Ex:A kindergarten class raised money to save an endangered animal through a PBL unit. Authentic learning & they had a blast! #EduAR
A4 Learning can be fun, most students will not even realize they are learning when they are having fun. Give choices allow creative #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A4: Today we played an improv game to promote quick thinking. Tomorrow is field day FUN! I strive to make my class "the one kids would choose to go to each day." I start the day greeting current students and former students who stop by. #tlap#Path2Serendipity#eduar
A4) School might not always be “fun,” but it *can* always be intriguing. The BEST way to achieve that is to ask questions that make students think deeply and critically. Quite honestly, that can be scary for some teachers! #EduAR
A4 Learning can and should be FUN! Fun doesn’t always mean elaborate, fun can be in the topic of conversation, fun can be in the choices for showing mastery, fun can be in the groupings or collaborations, fun can be in the games, questions, and interactions #EduAR
A3:I model giving tchrs a voice & choice. I try to specifically look for this in my observations. Encourage flexibility & risk taking when I see it from ss & tchrs. #EduAr#Path2Serendipity
I connect with those I have relationships with and try to expand my horizons to include others and their perspectives. I enjoy working with the students. #EduAR
A4: We CAN learn AND have fun! Ss remember experiences NOT standards. It’s our responsibility to make learning an experience they will never forget. I want my Ss so immersed in learning that they don’t even realize we’re working. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity#LoveLiteracyLearning
A5: In ALL the ways! If we are having fun, Ss have fun too! Laugh together, connect, play, try new things, keep things novel. Watch this to get an idea of the fun we have at Quincy Elementary: https://t.co/TBeos6E4Nu#EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A5) During every season/holiday, I put up giant sticky notes in the faculty bathroom with a writing prompt. I’m sure you can imagine the HILARIOUS fun we have with that...especially in May! 😏 #EduAR
A5: I have my group of teacher friends that do outside of school things together. The HS English teachers @robinkuhn and I like to tell jokes to each other. We also have a unnamed friend @RWildcatCheer who doesn't always like our jokes! #EduAR
Yes! Have a quote up in my office from @ToddWhitaker that says when making a decision, consider what the most positive and productive members of your team will think, then go with that! #EduAR#Path2Serendipity

Q6: Following the #Path2Serendipity means understanding that the only person who controls me is me. What strategies do you use to help your students focus on what they can control? #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A4: We never lose our desire to play- playing in itʻs essence is fun AND playing w/ ideas, new learning, new discoveries is when connections are made (there is not a polarity) #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A5: #eduAR#Path2Serendipity Hmmmmm. I always have fun. Every day. I make it a point to make each day great and to smile at everyone i see. I like to joke around a lot with my team...bless their hearts. They put up with me and my antics a lot.
A6: It's not fair, but the reality is that if we want things to be different, WE have to be different because WE are the only thing we can control. Great lesson to learn young! #Path2Serendipity#EduAR
A5: I make it a point to stop and be present in the moment. I find time to laugh and smile with my colleagues. I have fun by sharing school spirit and engaging in activities that promote a positive culture. #eduAR#Path2Serendipity#LoveLiteracyLearning

A7 Thought I was career bound in business, wanted nothing to do with children. Found myself at home with my children, loving every minute, could not get enough, turned to education. #EduAR#Path2Serendipity
A1: I have always been passionate about working with and helping kids, my 5th grade teacher was probably where I drew my inspiration to be a teacher. I also feel like it’s just “in my blood” and comes naturally for the most part. But I’m always improving my craft #EduAR
A7: I applied for my 1st admin job, I thought it was going to be great. The position was at my former HS and the town that my family lived in. Losing out on that job was the best thing for me and allowed me to come to my current district where I have never been happier. #EduAR
