#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
If we want students to be engaged in deep learning they need to be provided opportunities to craft and ask their own questions - this is how they engage, participate and take risks in their learning - this leads them to being empowered in their learning @edutopia#learnlap
Phil from Northern Virginia. I teach 6/7 US History I&II and am the founder of #waledchat (Thurs @ 9pm) and #Edusations (https://t.co/tFjvnT6iL0). My Ss would probably describe them as "hard." Glad to be here! #learnlap
I'm Paul Solarz, a 4th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois and author of #LearnLAP. So grateful to have @GrayMttrs moderating this evening so I can help with my niece's volleyball practice! :)
One word: CHALLENGING
(but worthwhile & fun) :)
Hello #learnlap, Melissa from NM! Since we are currently prepping for research projects I would hope they would say "Credibility" since they are in the thick of studying how to determine if a source is credible/trustworthy!
A1: Not everything our Ss do in the future will come in the form of filling out a worksheet. Inquiry teaches them essential skills to be critical thinkers, innovators, and successful in their futures! #learnlap@ERobbPrincipal@burgessdave@PaulSolarz@iluveducating
A1. This chart about the inquiry process goes a bit deeper than the previous one and also includes: goals, what the student will do and what the team will do.
You might want to save this one for a rainy day :-)
#LearnLAP
A1 - Since education is slowly changing due to the fact that content knowledge can be so easily acquired online, it's vital that we teach students HOW to research so they don't have to rely on others to provide them information & can instead focus on applying it! #LearnLAP
Jennifer Gonzalez podcast leads me to Mr. Bedley, leads me to this article, leads me to tomorrow’s social studies lesson! Thank you internet. Thank you @Scotteach & @cultofpedagogy!
A1 Inquiry fosters the ongoing cycle of curiosity, gathering reliable information, making sense of the information, and sharing learning with others. It is a habit of mind that transcends school. #LearnLAP
A1: Without inquiry, students may perform without a full understanding of what's expected; therefore, having an impact on self-esteem and their effort on connected activities going further #LearnLAP
I agree with this SO much! I remember when Google searches first arrived on the scene and I was telling other educators how important it was for us to teach students the skill of searching out the information they were seeking. #LearnLAP
A1 - Since education is slowly changing due to the fact that content knowledge can be so easily acquired online, it's vital that we teach students HOW to research so they don't have to rely on others to provide them information & can instead focus on applying it! #LearnLAP
A1: Asking questions is the 🗝️to unlocking 🔐 answers in our quests for knowledge. Inquiry thru questions drive the learning process & wo/it curiosity would be non-existent, don't ya think? #learnlap
Brian form Illinois checking into #LearnLAP a bit late
A1 Inquiry is the process of how we think independently & as a collaborative It is not just part of the process but the foundation of what we do as Ts We need to help Ss develop their thinking process #LearnLAP
It really depends on the topic. When it came to research papers, I left it really broad—historical mysteries and conspiracies—then let Ss brainstorm topics #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP INQUIRY could mean many things... Enquire into , investigation, depth of knowledge and understanding, experiences, interpretation, questioning...I feel Ss today have so much exposure they need to wander off into the " inquiry zone"figure out some answers for themselves
A2: Developing a “why” culture. Infants and toddlers ask this with regularity and somewhere along the path of education, students get tired of not getting an answer to this question! Teachers must provide answers to the “why” if we want to engage learners! #LearnLAP
A2. This graphic shares details involved in combining curiosity and powerful learning. I think a terrific starting point would be for the student to research what they were curious about. #LearnLAP
A2) Kick off new learning with brainstorming - what Ss already know and what they wonder. Return to the list during the unit to see how many questions we've answered, and add new Qs as we go! #learnlap
A2. I love using GIFs to spark the curiosity of students. I find them on NGSS Phenomena website: https://t.co/DRzxFTMF8X
if I cannot find a suitable one on there, I head over to https://t.co/btnqAvJTkW and put the GIF on my slide. #learnlap
A2: I love a good simulation or game! Trench Warfare and a "Find the Communist" game are fun to engage students and lead them to asking questions. #learnlap
A2 A Wonder Wall, borrowed from the Genius Hour, works year round. Ss keep a page in the Dialogue Journals about what they would like to know more about. The lists get long and act as springboards into deeper learning. #LearnLAP
A2 So important not to overwhelm Ss w/the hook Get Ss engaged w/a #phenomenon that 1. Ss have interest in and 2. that they can relate to With some knowledge & purpose the table is set #LearnLAP
A2: My strategy is to leave most introductory problems open-ended. No hints, just students trying whatever they can to solve a problem! I’m always so surprised how excited when I give them the oppritunity to fail! Creates great discussion. #LearnLAP
A2 Setting up discovery stations within learning environments based around 'BIG IDEAS" & providing opportunity for independent exploration & investigation in order to generate curiousity, questions & wonderings #learnlap
A2: I use pictures from The NY Times and begin class by asking questions and then giving the the story behind the photo. I have been using Wonder projects at the end of unit where Ss create questions and research a history topic. Create a culture of questioning! #learnlap
A1 For kids to really engage in learning, they need to be interested.
For kids to be interested, their questions need to be valued.
When kids can pose questions, delve into answers & decide which strategies to employ next, they truly buy into authentic research. #LearnLAP
A2. Sometimes it's learning by doing, a hands on approach. Where they find out the why, and what causes what to occur as they are doing the activity or experiment. Which can generate more questions. #learnlap
A2: Ss begin their independent research projects by generating personal lists based on topics they have high interest in but know little to nothing about & would ❤️🧡💜💙💚 love to learn everything about - to become a kid expert! #learnlap
A2 - I try to inspire curiosity through Passion Time, simulations, debates, mini lessons, class discussions, etc. Different activities inspire different students, so I try lots of different methods depending on my purpose. #learnlap
Quite often we rush straight into inquiry research - this why we would provide a number of weeks within a term for students to explore "Big Ideas" before they decided the aspect they wanted to conduct their own inquiry related to the particular area of learning #LearnLAP
A2: I've recently dabbled with giving Ss just a taste of what is to come. It provides me an informal idea of where Ss are at with a given topic as well as gauge their feelings on the same topic! #LearnLAP
A2: I find that good questioning can activate Ss curiousity. It’s like putting the ball in their court and pushing them to find the answers to their own Qs. Goes back to authentic learning & inquiry. #LearnLAP
Q3: What do most research-based lessons and activities currently look like in your classroom, school, or district? Are they student, standard, or product driven? #LearnLAP
This idea of sharing a starting point with them is just SO SO excellent! Love it that you use a graphic. What would happen if you beganb a conversation with one of the graphics I shared? #LearnLAP
A2: The question formation technique is a game changer! Broadcast an image/video/text/whatever, and give them time to brainstorm questions before you divulge anything. You can also coach them to turn statements into questions. #LearnLAP
@conniehamilton is writing a book about questioning. I can't wait until it is released as I think it is one area everyone can get behind working to improve. #LearnLAP
A3- Being a PBL based classroom...the research process is scaffolded and ongoing with lots of student choice. I would say a combo of student, standard, and product driven...just based in the day. #learnlap
A2 Meaningful conversations drive inquiry as well as compelling nonfiction books and a class log to document kids' questions and ideas. One esteemed colleague of mine says, "The most powerful place for inquiry to happen is thru a class log that captures Ss & Ts ?s." #LearnLAP
a3: I start with the standards. Discuss w/ Ss what THEY think they should be able to do. Then we move into brainstorming potential readings, products ... give them an understanding of the WHY before we move to the how and what #learnlap
A3 This year my big push has been moving to mastery learning. I have been trying to slowly give more and more control over to my students with self paced lessons and units. Still trying to figure it all out, but I’m loving the ride! #LearnLAP
A3) I'd have to say all three, in this order: Standards first. Students second, product last. Sometimes new lessons and activities are created with all three in mind, in equal weight. #learnlap
A3 - All three have a place in our curriculum in my opinion. Passion Time is an example of student driven inquiry, my simulations are generally standard-driven & our Explorer Project is product-driven. #learnlap
A3
Look: Ss collaborting & discussing to blend their thinking
The driven aspect is all of the above I can see where they at times are Ss, product, and standard driven, or a combination all at the same time #LearnLAP
A2: To be honest, my favorite way to get students wondering or asking questions is to show them a photo or short video that creates more questions than answers! Fifth graders quickly develop a “need-to-know” frame of mind once their curiosity is lit! #LearnLAP#hook
A3: In the areas of literacy and science, much is standard and product driven. Science has Ss listening to lecture then working on their screens. Lit has unrealistic writing expectations on topics that aren't of interest #LearnLAP
A3 In the schools that I've worked in the types of activities depended upon the area of learning that was the focus - as we wanted students working as:
Historians
Geographers
Scientists
Chemists
Physicists
Biologists
Designers
Engineers
Nutritionists
etc
#learnlap
A3: in my class, research based projects are student driven. They create a list of “wonder”
statements, create questions, research/collaborate, create, and share. The attached are examples from our last Greece Wonder Project. #learnlap
A3: Great lessons are always learning focused! Sometimes that requires more emphasis on student, others on standard and still others on product. #learnlap
A3 As an elem T we are building the skills of inquiry. Our approach is a combo of standard and student centered. Currently we are working on cultural focus of Spain. Ss may dig into any area connected to that focus. #LearnLAP
A3: Great question! I think most curriculum IS research driven. The better question is, which research should we be using to drive instruction?
I’d say that more recent research supports student driven instructional choices. #learnlap
#LearnLAP A3. My students are currently working on formulation of Research Question .. it's so engaging. The best part is that we ( Ss&I) drew a class checklist for"good questions" and that helped the students to create clear, focused inquiry driven Qs for each. It's enabling
Unpacking the way different professionals e.g. authors & scientists work, is a way to understand the processes they use - this moves away from standard & product orientation in the learning to a way of being as a learner #learnlap
A4. Some students haven't had nearly enough experiences with .... "I wonder ....." so you get that blank look until they flex their curiosity muscles. An excellent teacher can ignite that spark! #LearnLAP
Last year - I copied and showed all the photos from a chapter on the American Revolution. Ss created questions about each photo, then as a class we selected the best questions. Ss then got into the chapter to find answers and noticed the photos. They enjoyed it. #learnlap
A4: I find struggles with students remember to not copy and paste, give credit to sources, and not give up if they can't find a source right away. These are foundational skills that we can all work to help our Ss grow in! #learnlap
A3. All three. Standards being taught, Ss areas focused on, and the activities or experiments which demonstate the phenonmen and variables for Ss to test. #learnlap
A4: Perseverance is often a challenge. Today’s learner (both students and teachers) wants things immediately and that is not easy when conducting research. #learnlap
Time always seems to be a challenge. Time for Ts to adequately prepare new research-based lessons. Time for students to play with these lessons, give and receive feedback, revise. So much content that is expected to be "covered!" #learnlap
A4: I find struggles with students remember to not copy and paste, give credit to sources, and not give up if they can't find a source right away. These are foundational skills that we can all work to help our Ss grow in! #learnlap
A4 As a 4th & 5th grade edu we are constantly focusing on reliability. What makes information/resources reliable, accurate ect? A very important skill in our #tech driven world. Citing sources is also a challenge for Ss to remember when working independently. #LearnLAP
A4 Communication I struggle w/having ALL Ss see what the outcome will look like My Ss struggle with working past where they think they should work We both put limits on ourselves #LearnLAP
I have a strict academic honesty policy. I give one act of mercy (a chance to redo) but after that? They have to learn consequences. Too many Ts in the past let it go #LearnLAP
A4: The largest challenge I face in teaching 8 year olds through research-related activities and lessons is staying organized and focused. Lots of squirrel moments! I usually need to be one step ahead of them!#LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A4. That is a challenge...to encourage them to look beyond the Google....they need to look at primary and secondary sources to reach informed conclusions, but when they start to Google ....it challenges the whole process.and some will always do that :-(
A4: When students aren’t used to being challenged there can be some push back. In our classrooms we need to develop environments where students aren’t afraid to offer up suggestions and try new things! #learnlap
Not as a hashtag, but I do love getting students “wondering” & find it’s more productive/open-ended, than framing an inquiry as a problem to be solved or a product to be made (though I’ve run Projects in that way, as well). #LearnLAP
A4: Sorry I’m late, but I am Steve from California! The challenges I see are for students is deciphering between reputable Internet sources if they have not been taught already, and narrowing down the research into something tangible and meaningful. #LearnLAP
Yes - it is amazing how often I remind students that they may learn more by clicking on something other than the first hit that comes up in a search. #LearnLAP
A4: I find struggles with students remember to not copy and paste, give credit to sources, and not give up if they can't find a source right away. These are foundational skills that we can all work to help our Ss grow in! #learnlap
When I think back to when I use to do this, it was from never being taught how to summarize - teachers just assumed I knew how.
I bet there are creative ways to help students learn how to steer clear of something that would bring with it a negative consequence? #LearnLAP
I have a strict academic honesty policy. I give one act of mercy (a chance to redo) but after that? They have to learn consequences. Too many Ts in the past let it go #LearnLAP
A4 Depending on the diversity of your school community & the socio-economic status - a challenge was lack outside school experiences or limited language that students brought to the topic - so this is why it was necessary to invest time in pre exploration of topic #learnlap
Most plagiarism I've seen is because of my not doing a good enough job teaching paraphrasing, which is a genuinely hard skill to learn. I think I've gotten better at finding better ways to build up their paraphrasing skills. Are you seeing this or true copy-paste stuff? #LearnLAP
For our research project that’s 1/2 their grade, they have to attend a conference with me and I will check for plagiarism. If I catch it and they don’t fix it, I don’t show mercy #LearnLAP
A4:
Student - copying/pasting, evaluating sources, using Google to conduct searches.
Me - I want to put a deadline in research, but it’s hard because everyone is different and research can be done many different ways. It’s messy. #learnlap
Q5: Choice is an important component of inquiry. How do you provide students choice while still incorporating the standards and skills associated with research? #LearnLAP
A4: With MS, there's this tough balance between their being old enough to be held accountable to research the right way and their growing up in a time where Google IS the source. I don't think we spend enough time teaching kids how to find and cite appropriate sources. #learnlap
For our research project that’s 1/2 their grade, they have to attend a conference with me and I will check for plagiarism. If I catch it and they don’t fix it, I don’t show mercy #LearnLAP
A4. plagarism in coying, frustration because they don't want to take the time to search for answers, time to do research projects and to work with Ss on using internet. #learnlap
I'm trying to figure out ways to give Ss time to practice this skill during a "warm-up" of some sort that also doesn't take away from instruction or work time #LearnLAP
A5 With inquiry research its important to give Ss options as to what the end product will look like We can't put them in a box, we need to place them by a window so they can communicate in their way #LearnLAP
There's a kind of "search stamina" that we need to help students develop. I think some of this comes from doing more explicit instruction on reading: when + how do you skim? What does it mean to read closely? How can you read + use sources that disagree with your point? #LearnLAP
These are 10th graders. It’s not their first rodeo. We practice citing sources, signal phrases, etc. I still get flat out copy and pasted answers. 🤷🏼♀️ I could understand if they poorly paraphrased but that’s not what I’m getting #LearnLAP
Sounds spectacular! Learning this at early grade level. You are certainly preparing them for their future.
I bet in a few years students will be able to cut and paste words into a program and it will automatically paraphrase it for them. If this doesn't already exist. #Learnlap
When we begin our research, we cite our sources as we go. We also work with our amazing @TCElibrary media specialist in paraphrasing lessons. It takes time but my 3rd graders are definitely improving!
I agree that teaching paraphrasing to avoid plagiarism is key. I often find that students copy and paste because they think they are finding the answers to the questions and therefore do not see anything wrong with that. #LearnLAP

@MrAustinA2, @ADDEnglishTeach, @GrayMttrs
A3: That’s a great question, but I’d say it depends. In some subjects the research is student driven, but in others it’s content/standard driven. I try to strike a balance between all three, ideally. #LearnLAP
I have this great extension called "Draftback" that let's you see all the document's revision. So I can see if Ss copy and paste, and lots of conversations I think have helped me begin to slowdown that problem. Big project coming up though I'm a bit nervous for. #learnlap
A5 Choice & voice was in the negotiation of a Research Proposal - this process was scaffolded across Years 3-6 - however team planning, teacher/student conferences & students working in collaboration with peers supported - ensured standards & skills were well developed #learnlap
A3 The most powerful inquiries & research are those that are student-driven. They excel in diff locations & looking thru unique perspectives. Obviously my knowledge of the standards play into some of the content. #LearnLAP
Hey #LEARNLap Check out Carla Tantillo Philibert & follow @classcatalyst designed to give S’s & T’s a way to raise awareness of their emotional needs & the tools to get themselves ready-to-learn. CLICK for 2 min video: https://t.co/18BuhlS9GB & https://t.co/WqE5UK84EW for more!
A5: #geniushour has helped the most for offering choice & inquiry. I also find offering a variety topics related to curricular themes helps as well! #LearnLAP
A5: I like providing menus. "Progressive Era Football" and "Hotel del Strunk" provide my students with lots of choices in how to express their knowledge. #learnlap
I have to explicitly state on assignments “answers not in your own words will not be given credit.” I tell them I’m here to evaluate what you’ve learned, not how well you internet searched and retyped an answer #LearnLAP
Can you tell us more about your Explorer project? My class is embarking on studying the Explorers on Tuesday! Our current research study in History is more product driven, too. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A5. Each student formulates their own Questions & investigate into the choice of the final one ,with a structured action plan .Ss are never out of sync with the UNIT GOAL OR THE BIG IDEA, but they are free to have their #stuchoice#StudentVoice as they journey along
A5 The standards and skills associated with research are broad and not content specific. Offering choice engages students and empowers them to answer their own question through active investigation. #LearnLAP
A5: @DanielPink says turn every chore into a choice with 4 Ts: Time, Task, Technique, Team: Often total autonomy, based on student’s point in /level of learning can be more detrimental. Guidance is not always a bad thing. #learnlap
A5: In order for standards and skills to be mastered, Ss need to have buy in to and be engaged with what they are doing. Simply put, without some form of choice, some Ss have no chance at meeting the standard because they're checked out. #learnlap
Q5: Choice is an important component of inquiry. How do you provide students choice while still incorporating the standards and skills associated with research? #LearnLAP
A4 One challenge is the desire to try to do everything.
Sometimes selecting several deep, simple, reflective engagements will do more for kids' true learning than trying to do lots of little activities. #LearnLAP
Q6: Long gone are the days of encyclopedias and notecards when it comes to research. What are your go-to resources or tools students utilize when researching in today's world? #LearnLAP
Also, citing sources is tricky + full of pitfalls, so I consistent practice can help, but it's a really hard skill to master, especially early on. I think talking with students about why citation matters beyond "because I said so" can also help: go back to the why. #LearnLAP
In reply to
@SteveGasca, @ADDEnglishTeach, @GrayMttrs
A5 cont: Choice can be incorporated in product while standards are met in process. Bonus: you get a neat discussion about how all Ss completed research and came up with completely different products/results. #LearnLAP
However they can have choice in the strategies they choose to solve problems, the materials they use to model the problem & also the way they represent their solutions to the problems in Math #learnlap
A5: I like providing menus. "Progressive Era Football" and "Hotel del Strunk" provide my students with lots of choices in how to express their knowledge. #learnlap
A5: Technology has been my "go to" for providing Ss with choice. Being 1:1 tech, Ss can chat me or peers when they have ?s. They can also use sites such as @Flipgrid to explain their process(es) #LearnLAP
Um...I just buy all the ones that have unhealthy things paired with them...oreos...yes please....cookies and cream...yup....M&Ms...duh of course...isn't that how adulting goes? #learnlap
A5: I give options. We brainstorm ways to demonstrate learning. I even give students input on how long the unit should take. They are usually pretty close to estimating how much time they need #LearnLAP
A5: One of the ways I incorporate choice is giving students at times the opportunity to choose how they would like to present their findings whether it be in a written format, a visual presentation, or something more technological and interactive. #LearnLAP
There's a lot of talk about plagiarism tonight + choice can be a huge factor in preventing students from checking out of the assignment by driving investment. I also think we can look at our assessment design + if we're leaving genuine space for choice + inquiry. #LearnLAP
A5: Ss drive independent projects w/multiple skills including: process of elimination topic task, set SMART goal & Action Plan, create 9 deep level ?'s to answer, learn note-taking skills & how to identify credible sources, generate approved resources, then begin research.#LearnLAP
My students take a mastery test on citing sources. I have about 90 percent mastered on in text, approaching on signal phrases and not even close on works cited. They take it until a 70 #LearnLAP
This is why I do a conference with them. I show them the problem spots. I remind that on research 90 percent of what you turn in needs a source #LearnLAP
absolutely! I have tools readily available around the room to aide in this - colored pencils, highlighters, rulers, modeling clay, string, whiteboards... #learnLAP
A6 So many resources
1⃣Range of primary & secondary resources
2⃣Classroom, school & local library
3⃣Experts in the field of study
4⃣Expertise within the school community
5⃣Excursions or Incursions
6⃣Range of text types e.g. multi-model
So many tools online
#LearnLAP
I’d argue that notecards still have a place. I love watching students physically move around their info deciding where it fits. ...of course we also take pictures of the notes w/our iPads so they don’t get misplaced! #LearnLap
Q6: Long gone are the days of encyclopedias and notecards when it comes to research. What are your go-to resources or tools students utilize when researching in today's world? #LearnLAP
It’s okay, I understand. Our SS curriculum, overall is also old-fashioned, except we run a “Walk Through the American Revolution” which we all love! Isn’t there a 4th grade version of that? From CA Weekly Explorer? #learnLAP
Q7: Getting students to move beyond the first page of Google can be a challenge. How can we teach students to evaluate their online resources for relevancy, recency, and reliability? #LearnLAP
Agree to disagree. Academic honesty is a huge deal in college. Students need to understand the very real consequences of plagiarism. They understand it when it comes to music and sampling #LearnLAP
I collaborated w/ our SPED T & put a lesson together on genetics using NewsELA; we used a 3rd grade lexiled reading article & devised a lesson using data for graphing. Very cool! #learnlap

@Mr_ESievert, @MrOverstreet101, @GrayMttrs, @Newsela
A5 We're finishing a collaborative cls study on Art Masterpieces. We've scaffolded the kids thru rdg, viewing art, ?'ing, wrtg info, modeling art attempts from the masters and more - after documenting it along the way for parents. Now, it's their turn for their choice. #LearnLAP
A6: 1st we use hardback set of Encyclopedia Britannica w/several Cornell Note-Taking examples. Then move to online journals, articles,& websites. I 💙 @nearpod's Sourcing Your Information lesson. It is a must do for teaching how to determine online credibility! #learnlap
A7: google has some great lessons to help students create and evaluate searches. Stanford History Education Group has great lessons for civic online reasoning and evaluating sources. https://t.co/ZklKr63aPO#learnlap
A7 You really need to continually model, demonstrate & scaffold what a researcher does & how they conduct a research that is relevant & reliable & contains recent information - and what this looks like across different learning areas #LearnLAP
A7 Currently helping students develop their own "sniff" test to filter reliable web resources. A benefit of a blog is that it is an archive of past ideas. Used a framework created two years ago for this year's adventure. https://t.co/1HISjrrodJ#LearnLAP#diglit
A7: Getting Ss to evaluate sources is something my co-t do often b/c even w/ my MS Ss, they rarely look beyond the first page of google searches. This is a skill we introduce at the beginning of the year then focus hard on during our argumentative unit #LearnLAP
A7: I have a poster I made on @piktochart in my room that says "Is the source D.U.M.B.?" (Disorganized, Unproven, Mistaken, Bias) and it helps give them a mental checklist with the different sources. #learnlap
A7: that’s why I have mine research a mystery or conspiracy. They see very quickly the quacks and tinfoil hats. Next, we move to more credible sources. #LearnLAP
A5: Over time I've learned to add choice somewhere in most every lesson, so now when I begin a lesson or a project or even a test, if I don't provide choices, some student will raise their hand and ask me, "...and what are our options?" Love that question now! #LearnLAP
A6 Gail Gibbons, @seymoursimon & @jerrypallotta are some of our go-to resources for great books on nonfiction topics. Kids learn about everything from interesting topics and fun facts to labels, captions, diagrams & more. #LearnLAP
A6: Our first step is to know how to do this well ourselves! This skills need to be practised, modelled and taught to Ss. Ss should have guided practise and lessons in how to evaluate sources and it should start very young! #LearnLAP
Q7: Getting students to move beyond the first page of Google can be a challenge. How can we teach students to evaluate their online resources for relevancy, recency, and reliability? #LearnLAP
I have enjoyed following this thread. I think @mjjohnson1216 is just trying to get at is yes we show kids how to not plagiarize and that it is wrong...but how do we do so in a constructive and positive way. Punitive measures tend to not lead to positive growth...#learnlap
In reply to
@ADDEnglishTeach, @mjjohnson1216, @mjjohnson1216
Q8: Let's inspire each other! Share your favorite or most successful research-based activity, lesson, or assessment. How does it or how can it utilize inquiry? Pictures are always welcome! #LearnLAP
A6: I often throw it out on my @Twitter PLN. So many experts in one place. Love using primary sources! We find them in every classroom in our building. #TCEcardinals#LearnLAP
A7 Corroboration is something a 5-year-old taught us all several years ago. She shared that when she came across the same fact repeatedly, it "meant more." Yep - we had to practice saying that word a number of times to get it right! Accuracy starts young... #LearnLAP
A8- My go to research based activity is crash research. One hour to research a topic of their choice...next hour we present it. Always fun to see what kids pick! #learnlap
A8: A 4 day mini-unit on Internet Access/Censorship. First two days are Ss researching/developing opinions on pros/cons. Third day is an immersive experience where Ss will experience the same tasks through diff levels of internet access. Last day is a Socratic Seminar. #learnlap
A7: I 💙💚💜❤️ @nearpod & their "Sourcing Your Information" lesson! Ss are so engaged in the lesson's 1st task of determining whether or not the Northwest Tree Octopus is real. It has a website, videos, pictures, etc... but is it CREDIBLE?! Great discussions! #learnlap
Thanks so much everyone for participating in this evening's #LearnLAP chat! Thanks especially to @GrayMttrs for moderating such an awesome chat!
Please join us next week as @Jennifer_Manly moderates. We NEED VOLUNTEERS to moderate chats after next week if you're interested!
A8: I LOVE THIS. So many skills you can teach over the course of a short amount of time. Might need to try it for the first week of the new semester! #Learnlap
Thank you. We take lots of photos - and use them to look back across our learning. They help us remember and reflect - and thus learn - more. #LearnLAP
Thanks so much everyone for participating in this evening's #LearnLAP chat! Thanks especially to @GrayMttrs for moderating such an awesome chat!

Hey #learnlap! Hope to see you in #waledchat this Thursday at 9pm ET! It'll be a reflection on our wins and losses over the past month and we would love to see you there! Here are the Q's: https://t.co/sDokwHXs1T
A8: I have been using Wonder projects at the end of unit. Ss create wonder statements about the unit content, choose a statement, create questions, and research. The attached are from the Colonies unit. Forts, houses, colonial baked goods, #learnlap
A8 To inspire students I think the most successful way is to send them out on excursions (field trips) where they experience the area of learning first hand - so all within the class have a shared experience that initiates the learning process of inquiry #LearnLAP
I think you can do some really cool work here using different perspectives + readings on the same event: who do we believe + why? What does that say about us? What makes something true? These seem like big questions, but I think that's kind of the point! #LearnLAP
I *love* creating Google Custom Search Engines on topics relating to student inquiry, especially when digging into the #NGSS or using #PBL, but sometimes my students get clearly frustrated when they are searching for a specific answer to a question. #LearnLAP
I love doing them. Can hit research, collaboration, inquiry, and oral communication skills in a short amount of time. I sometimes like to throw a twist in presenting their projects too. #learnlap
