Welcome to tonight's #edchatie live discussion.
As usual though, before we begin, please introduce yourself and remember to always include the hashtag #edchatie in all tweets for the next hour!

Very easy to get overloaded with work in teaching! If I have more than two evenings in a week when I'm working til 8/9pm on work, thats what I consider too much! I stay in school until approx 5pm most days doing work. #edchatie
#edchatie for me work overload is when the pressure that gets me to peak production topples over into stress that is counter-productive. It looks like me scrambling to get basics like corrections done. A headache due to low blood sugar levels cos I skipped break & lunch...
Work overload can cause a lot of problems in the workplace, and after many years working in education might I suggest that we are the creators of our own demise in this area #edchatie
As a preservice teacher I am starting to get a glimpse of what it is going to be like as a teacher. How do you deal with the stress that comes with work overload? #edchatie
Seamus Keane, PP English & History Teacher. Workload is massive for LC English anyway due to texts frequently changing & corrections. Now JCR a nightmare, I am supposed to teach them practically EVERYTHING according to Learning Outcomes! Burnout inevitable #edchatie
For the next hour on tonight's live #edchatie we'll be discussing the topic βWhat does work overload look like to you?β
Join in the discussion and share your thoughts with colleagues
I am currently a preservice teacher at Grove City College. What is your advice for when you are starting to feel overwhelmed by your work load? #edchatie
A friend of mine supervised a student teacher, who was changing careers. He'd been in insurance. At one point he observed, "teachers work really hard. I don't think I've ever been this busy..." #edchatie

I prioritise what is needed now and then work on that. Focus on essentials that need to be done, other stuff can wait! I always make time for 'me time' for a walk or something to detach from work! If I can deligate work, I will. #edchatie
Amy, secondary Irish. My first year in a 22 year contract I ended up in hospital with stress headaches. Totally burned out and nervous about my first exam classes. Have tried to work smarter since but it's hard. #edchatie
#edchatie giving yourself permission to be imperfect helps. Don't let perfection be the enemy of the good (paraphrased from some smart person with a book on this stuff--don't remember who though)
I agree with the need for "me-time" - important to be able to move your head away from the messiness of feeling overworked and out into some clear air and a different environemnt. It definitely helps.
#edchatie
I made a 'rule' this year that I wouldn't do any work on weekends! So far it's been successful and I've managed to confine my work to week days! #edchatie
Make more use of IT for corrections, communication, sharing resources, itβs easier now than in the past for me with subject Dept, common assessments, Dept planning, used to have to do all this alone in small school #edchatie
#edchatie Miriam PP tchr in Thurles. Think the secret is to work closely with other tchrs, ask for help if you need it, remember you should not be working harder than the students! if that is possible nowadays.
There is a whole genre that I have noticed while in the States, the Pinterest classroom- the Irish version is the multiple team manager.... education is about students not what other teachers think! #edchatie
Coping strategies, apart from coffee, Coffee and more Coffee? I find I'm getting better at leaving corrections at work for breaks, rather than bringing them home and back in in the hope that they will correct themselves. #edchatie Setting no homework helps.
Am at year 4 now and learning to manage everything better. Coming home without work, giving exams back within a week rather than within a day, taking time for myself π #edchatie
Get outdoors for a walk, usually solves most of my stress! Work will be done, just stand back and assess what needs doing right now! I think also, good planning can alleviate work overload as you know what is coming! #edchatie
Important to manage stress in the workplace, teachers/management/staff who are not managing their stress can leak into relationships at work between colleagues or how students are treated, employee assistance numbers should be used #edchatie
This quadrant model from Covey is excellent for prioritising. When we're new at something we spend a lot of time in the urgent sections. The aim is to be working from the important/not urgent section.
#edchatie
I'm in Further ed, so setting homework is rarely an option. Its a useful tool but it should be short and to the point. You are not the best teacher just because you set the most homework #edchatie
Taken me yrs to figure this out... I used to spend hours after school and then hours at home doing work and then all sunday eve prepping... I soon copped on that I couldn't sustain that! #edchatie
Most of my stress over the years have been trying to push the envelope - working on trying to get innovative projects off the ground thinking that would make me more employable- it has opened a lot of opportunities but it does/did have costs #edchatie
Yes I get that but when in college they'll wait 2 or 3 wks for results! I tell them they can wait 3 or 4 days for mine! After they go through corrections themselves with me in class they have a fair idea how they got on before I've even returned the test! #edchatie
We've just passed the halfway point in tonight's #edchatie live hour of discussion.
Tonight's topic is all about βWhat does work overload look like to you?β
Join in and share your thoughts.
I think short term intensity/stress for important projects to you is reasonable. It's costly, but rewarding. It's when the stress and overload becomes the norm you have a problem.
#edchatie
True but patience is something they need to learn. Have 7 sets of Xmas tests to get through at the moment, students looking for results day after exam π they don't seem to understand our workload #edchatie
#edchatie obviously blake said. Now man knows what is enough until he knows what is too much. And for me, from my own experience. 10 (ten) modules and 33 teaching/lecturing hours per week for 6 and 12 weeks is too much. And =overload whem coupled with the admin responibilities.
Where do people feel the pressure/stress of the too large workload is coming from? Leadership? Colleagues? Students? Parents? Or just from yourself? #edchatie
#edchatie In most jobs you go home but don't have homework, don't have to think of work until you return. Like other tchrs I try not to work at night but it is unavoidable sometimes. Using the Calm app, had meditations to help switch off your entire body! only use it some ngts
I think mine comes from my own standards, And also the pressures of other activities/events that I get involved in in the school. But usually all by own choice! #edchatie
#edchatie Work overload to me is having to distill down & implement the latest pet project or initiative from the goose down, double duvet blanket of government bodies, agencies & other organisations associated with education. How about just leaving us alone to teach children?
With the current emphasis on mental health awareness for students, we have to realise that we cant help our students cope, unless we can manage it in our lives #edchatie its an infectious disease!
Well shared a house with a few people, all brought work home with them. One of the guys employed 2/3 fulltime people and a few temp. I would not want to be responsible for making payroll for anyone other than myself #edchatie
Honestly and Frankly I buy myself books... because as we understand buying books when we are busy represents a promise of a personal time comittment to ourselves in the near future..
Fair enough, but in many jobs you can choose to upskill or not, with us I feel we always need to be doing courses and improving ourselves. While it is positive, sometimes we need a break. To just be happy with what we know and work with that!! #edchatie
I talking about amount of time spent working, not saying to not work at all!
The majority of people chatting are working. It's about managing that workload.
#edchatie
Aisling Clery, PP Eng and Hist also.
Completely concur with your point on workload. LC corrections is a nightmare, you can only do so much self and peer assessment! LO at JC is terrifying - no way they can all be covered! #edchatie
JC has always been overloaded in terms of content. Hopefully assessment of new JC will allow students to focus more on the topics they enjoy. #edchatie.
Had that very conversation with 3rd yr students on Thursday! They spotted me out for dinner one eve and just had to mention it to me the next day! They couldn't fathom that I too had a life outside school! π€£ #edchatie

We're into the famous final five minutes of tonight's #edchatie discussion, which is all about βWhat does work overload look like to you?β
Any last thoughts, issues and especially solutions to share?
#edchatie Finding an overload ATM is coming from other aspects of life. As a younger teacher getting away to attend CPD or spending ages planning / upskilling was very doable. When you get to the family stage however.... time is at a serious premium.
I now understand why teachers often reference their own kids in the classroom...to drive home the point they don't (as I've been known to say π€£) sleep in a coffin in school once the students go home ππ

We have already gotten rid of summer exams for 2nd years in Eng - students do one of their CBAs instead but in-house exams are important too - they give students a benchmark for their progress. #edchatie
#edchatie Me too but last year did a computer science course and found it time consuming but very educational. Just wish you could take time of work to do some courses, rather than always have to do both together!!
Feel overloaded when underestimating the time to complete tasks (often), seeking perfection, not utilising tech fully, can't get away from oxygen thieves #edchatie
