A1: I ran because as a citizen and parent with classroom experience at the school, college, corporate level I felt I had something I could contribute. (2/3) #JCPSChat
A1: Also, when I first ran in 2012 of the three open seats, two of them were occupied by the only JCPS parents on the Board. I feel it’s important to have a parental voice on the Board. (3/3) #JCPSChat
A2: A lot happens in our district and it’s important for citizens and Board members to communicate so everyone is on the same page. I’m not able to be in our schools all the time, nor should I be. #JCPSChat
I've asked for students to be involved in our Board committees and have asked for students to a part of presentations to the Board. I'd really like to have a student rep on the Board, but that's currently prohibited by law. #JCPSChat
Because schools need to concentrate on educating students and not dealing with visits from me all the time. Plus OEA frowns upon disrupting schools with frequent visits. Also, I have a full-time job. #JCPSChat
A3: I stopped keeping track. It’s close to having another full-time job. Ballpark, 30ish hours per week on average with reading and keeping up with various media. #JCPSChat
We have to get away from teaching to the test, but Frankfort looks at assessments more than it should. There are lots of important skills that aren't tested. #JCPSChat
What can be done to build a relationship between students and those board members for JCPS? It seems as though students education is being controlled by people they’ve never met #mooreAPHG#JCPSChat

A4: More productive conferences like we had at the Fairgrounds over the summer are a good place to start. Open, ongoing communication and PD about DL and PBL so everyone understands and is on the same page. #JCPSChat
A4: Coteaching is a great way to tap into interpersonal needs of Ss intentionally. Making sure that learning activities are iterations of who the kids are - no artificial tasks that replicate the experience of the teacher. #UrbanEd#JCPSDL#jcpschat
Does the board have an "official vision" of what these things are? And if so, are they being communicated? If not, are they searching for the common message? #jcpschat

A4: ensuring inclusiveness and providing extended services to kids obviously slipping behind. Clear communication with the family is important as well. #JCPSchat
A5: Ts have to be willing to relinquish power in the Coteaching setting, allows for organic, authentic, deep learning to take place.

A5: Diverse candidates must be on the ballot first. Outside of Dist. 1, there has only been one SB candidate of color run and that was last year in Dist. 4. If you think you have something to contribute, then run no matter who you are. #JCPSChat

FRYSCs provide a lot of these services, but funding keeps getting cut from the state. The Board has been supplementing the lost funding for years. #JCPSChat
Q5: canidates should come from many backgrounds and races, ensuring voices for as many diffrent situations students have to deal with specific to their background. #JCPSchat

In my opinion, my education isn't being controlled by people I have never met. But at Moore, Ms. Walz, she is like a second mom to me. She checks up on me about my grades and even helped me what to do for college. It's more of a communication. #JCPSchat#mooreAPHG

When Counselors are freed from admin tasks to do true counseling work, schools will better reflect their true populations! #relationshipexperts#JCPSChat
A6: I think Board members do a pretty good job of this already. Most everyone uses Twitter, FB, and email. We used to have dist. meetings, but they were poorly attended. Please remember many Board members have full-time jobs and kids as well. #JCPSChat
#JCPSChat A4: Offer teachers in-school PD trainings during the school day (planning period, faculty meeting time, etc.). More teachers may be motivated to engage in PBL training and DL strategies if it is literally at their fingertips.

Candidates should be able to relate more with students like coming from other ethnics and beliefs and encourage students with different backgrounds to have a voice in their classrooms. #JCPSChat
Do you think that diversity is something important to look for in an efficient school board? If so, should it be something that we value in school board members, and if so, what do you think the importance of diversity is over merit if any? #JCPSChat
Q6: The obvious answer is the use of social media, but it goes further than that! Organizing events that go beyond school walls is important for example, the CD group we have at Moore! #JCPSChat
Q7: As a Board member, do you see yourself as a representative of the schools or of the community? How does that influence the decisions and actions you make?#JCPSChat

When I first ran in 2012, I attended a forum that was hosted by students. It was the hardest debate/forum during that campaign. There should be more of them. #JCPSChat
A7: Yes and yes. I do keep an eye on the schools in my district. However, there are a lot of Dist. 7 kids that attend school outside the district. When I make decisions, I look at the system as a whole and not just my area. #JCPSChat
Q7: I am not a board member but I do feel representative of my school and community! I always conduct my behavior in a respectful manner because I know what it reflects. #JCPSChat
And if we can hire more counselors! There are districts in NKY that doubled their counselors by reducing APs and have had huge gains in school culture, climate, SEL, and reductions in behavior issues. #JCPSChat

A8: I don’t think we have that much time. :-) I do think the administration is doing a much better job of communicating out. Being present is important.
“Decisions are made by those who show up” - President Josiah Bartlett #JCPSChat
A5: Programs like @EmergeKentucky train female candidates on how to run for office and encourage WOC. Running for office can be daunting -- we need a community to support their race! #JCPSChat
Q8: It all boils down to inclusiveness. There should be a place for everybody regardless of race, socioeconomic status, and background! If a student has no place they will not be involved. #JCPSChat
#JCPSChat A5: Encouraging more diverse candidates and supporting them throughout an entire campaign are different actions. I'd like to see diverse candidates continuously supported until they get elected.
@GruenTiff was telling me all about it! She'd know the exact stats and be better able to explain the amazing things they're doing in @erlangerelsmere#JCPSChat

I haven’t heard about our would-be school board members, so i think we should get more information out to students about who is running and their goals, so we can become more involved in JCPS and see who is and could be representing us

A9: Participate in the community feedback sessions the Board is doing to gather input regarding the superintendent search. It’s critical we hear from all segments of our community. #JCPSChat

A10: Pensions, vouchers/tax credits, and charters. All three of which are being used to destroy public education nationwide. The politics coming from Frankfort are divisive and destructive to the long-term wellbeing of our children and the commonwealth. (1/2) #JCPSChat
This is one of the reasons why the Board has meetings at schools throughout the year. In fact our next meeting is at @JtownHS on 11/28 at 7:00. #JCPSChat
Mataining presence in school buildings while not being intrusive is important. Speak to students and listen to their true needs. No one can tell you besides the students themselves. #JCPSchat
A10: JCPS is a big target because our teachers are the biggest threat to the agenda of those in power in Frankfort. They know how much power teachers have and they’re taking steps to reduce your strength. (2/2) #JCPSChat
#JCPSChat A9: Consistently remind him of his task at hand: To serve the students of this district by continuously working as a team with school staff (ALL STAFF). Goal: To educate OUR kids. #weareateam
If you are an educator in @JCPSKY and want to share about the great things in your class and school, I encourage you to sign up to speak at a Board meeting. #JCPSChat

SB elections are non-partisan, therefore there is no primary. That means the filing deadline isn't until August. You'll see who's running for SB around that time. #JCPSChat

PS: I’m grateful for all of you who are so engaged with our children and for doing the heavy lifting day after day while being criticized by those who know next to nothing about our students and their needs. #JCPSChat
@MrsSturgeonGCC because she makes me think, keeps me grounded, and constantly helps me grow in my knowledge, skills, and passion. She keeps me going! #JCPSChat
PS: I’m also grateful for @lgwillner for being Vice-Chair and putting herself out there and running for State Rep. If we’ve learned anything this last year, it’s government needs more women and diversity. #JCPSChat
Thanks for joining #JCPSChat tonight. Special thanks to @BradyJCPSBOE for hosting. Our next chat will be Dec 18 and will feature student-generated questions! Mark your calendars now!
