  • DramstadMusic Oct 10 @ 10:12 PM EDT
Literacy in music looks a lot different than ELA bc it's learning the foreign language of music notation! But w/ instruments! (: #hsd1chat

A2: I have been using the launching lessons. I have done 6 of them. #hsd1chat
  • AkuhlK Oct 10 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A2 We do writers workshop every day for 30 min. Some launching lessons take longer, some are shorter. My Ss love it #hsd1chat
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A2: yes, but I find I start pulling different strategies that aren’t listed to help me teach. #hsd1chat
  • cpierce2009 Oct 10 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A2 Can anyone explain what is meant by Launching process? I haven't heard that terminology yet! :) #hsd1chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A2. I am trying to work on "Launching". I could do a better job following the guidelines. I find myself doing my own thing often. #hsd1chat
  • EngWithWallace Oct 10 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A2: With upper class men, I feel like I get it easy. My kids mostly know it by now, but I do the launching lessons for those new! #hsd1chat

like @EngWithWallace said, upperclassmen are pretty set on writing. We're working on refining in-line citation/ annotation, etc #hsd1chat
  • MrsKimStout Oct 10 @ 10:18 PM EDT
I try to, but some of them take 5 minutes and some take 45. I modify as needed for my time and student needs. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @Jamiejoleen
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:18 PM EDT
It's working on the foundational skills that the upper grades will build off of. It's mainly for the primary grades. #hsd1chat
  • HhsAmerican Oct 10 @ 10:19 PM EDT
I gather that it's the term for setting a baseline of goals for the year and skills that will be taught #hsd1chat
    In reply to @DramstadMusic
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:20 PM EDT
That's great! Makes sense. Down in first grade, it's hard to remember how what their writing will look like when they get to HS. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @HhsAmerican, @EngWithWallace
  • cpierce2009 Oct 10 @ 10:20 PM EDT
A2b That must have been targeted at the elementary level. It was never discussed at the non-ELA HS workshops in detail. #hsd1chat

A2 Launching isn't a term I'm familiar with in music, but in my class LOTS of melodic echo, steady beat practice #hsd1chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:23 PM EDT
  • DramstadMusic Oct 10 @ 10:24 PM EDT
A2b serves as the launch for more complex skills down the road--rhythmic literacy, composition, etc. #hsd1chat
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:24 PM EDT
I am interested to see how well Ss apply their writing skills to music. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @DramstadMusic

  • HhsAmerican Oct 10 @ 10:25 PM EDT

  • EngWithWallace Oct 10 @ 10:25 PM EDT
A3 We do personal narratives at least once a year. My seniors have done one for a college application essay and my juniors will #hsd1chat
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:27 PM EDT
A3: We practice several short pieces and will compete a final piece. We also read several books. #hsd1chat
  • cpierce2009 Oct 10 @ 10:27 PM EDT
A3 Usually its related to how students experience culture or are impacted by historical events/trends in social studies courses. #hsd1chat
  • MrsKimStout Oct 10 @ 10:27 PM EDT
A3: I find it easy to use narratives because 4th graders like writing about themselves! I use this writing at least once a week #hsd1chat
  • EngWithWallace Oct 10 @ 10:27 PM EDT
A3b write one about coming of age. For shorter pieces, our bell ringers often ask for a short bit of narrative writing. #hsd1chat
  • DramstadMusic Oct 10 @ 10:27 PM EDT
A3 Not narrative in the ELA sense, but lots of student composition via movement exploration, melodic improvisation, song form #hsd1chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:27 PM EDT
A3.6/7 yrolds are good at talking about themselves, personal events, memories, etc.We apply narratives often-It's what they know. #hsd1chat
  • HhsAmerican Oct 10 @ 10:28 PM EDT
those get a lot of reference in 12th grade- it's something different & the flexibility helps with creativity in stressful sitch #hsd1chat

A3) tougher in PE, but can be used in journal responses, goal setting activities and in personal fitness plans in a roundabout way #hsd1chat
  • DramstadMusic Oct 10 @ 10:28 PM EDT
A3b common saying in my room, "If you liked what you did, do it again. If not, try something else." Lets Ss edit/refine product #hsd1chat

  • MrsKimStout Oct 10 @ 10:34 PM EDT
I agree! I don't really enjoy writing about myself either. #hsd1chat

Q4 Rubrics for formal refined writing assign; also informal checks through bellringers that can be discussed in pairs or otherwise #hsd1chat
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:34 PM EDT
A4: I use a mix of both. Now that I’m in 3rd grade I’m trying to have more formal assessments. Ss are very interested in grades #hsd1chat
  • cpierce2009 Oct 10 @ 10:34 PM EDT
A4 Rubrics for formal refined writing assign; also informal checks through bellringers that can be discussed in pairs or otherwise #hsd1chat
  • EngWithWallace Oct 10 @ 10:35 PM EDT
A4 Formal writing uses rubrics 2 help understand exactly why they scored what they did. Informally, we do checks 2 understanding. #hsd1chat
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:35 PM EDT
Are upper level Ts using common rubrics? #hsd1chat
    In reply to @HhsAmerican

A4 constant informal visual/aural assessment. Added mini whiteboards to my class this year. I'm loving the assessment opportunity #hsd1chat
  • cpierce2009 Oct 10 @ 10:36 PM EDT
I agree! I try to use them diagnostically at the beginning, but also again the next day after we've started. #hsd1chat

  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Oct 10 @ 10:37 PM EDT
A4. Mostly Informal. Formal=unit tests, spelling tests, etc. I know where my kids are at (everything is so "hands on" in 1st) #hsd1chat
  • MrsKimStout Oct 10 @ 10:37 PM EDT
A4: At this point mine are all informal, but I do have a writing project planned that will have a rubric with it next week. #hsd1chat
  • danebroadhead Oct 10 @ 10:37 PM EDT
A4) Formal assessment at end of each big unit. Informal assessment each day using a rubric that breaks down daily points #hsd1chat
  • DramstadMusic Oct 10 @ 10:37 PM EDT
A4b lapboards come out, Ss echo & notation rhythm, I can instantly see who gets it, who struggles. #hsd1chat
  • MrsKimStout Oct 10 @ 10:37 PM EDT
That is a GREAT idea! #hsd1chat
    In reply to @EngWithWallace, @youtheduteach
  • cpierce2009 Oct 10 @ 10:38 PM EDT
I would second what Rob said. We try to use common rubrics for common assignments, but some differences do occur. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @youtheduteach, @HhsAmerican
  • AkuhlK Oct 10 @ 10:39 PM EDT
A4 Lots of informal but a blend with formal unit test, fluency timings, STAR... #hsd1chat

  • cpierce2009 Oct 10 @ 10:43 PM EDT

A5. Our school has a portfolio that is made K-5 (writing pieces from each year gathered). #hsd1chat
  • EngWithWallace Oct 10 @ 10:43 PM EDT
A5 We are not doing a portfolio, but I think end of year discussions about growth really show students how far they've come #hsd1chat
  • DramstadMusic Oct 10 @ 10:44 PM EDT
A5b Instead, I try to get at least one recording per quarter for 2-5th up on my YouTube channel. #hsd1chat
  • cpierce2009 Oct 10 @ 10:44 PM EDT
A5b although with the World Cultures close read for each unit, that is certainly something we could do, so Ss can see progress. #hsd1chat
  • MrsKimStout Oct 10 @ 10:44 PM EDT
A5: 4G's does! And all elementary schools should. It's so cool to collect Ss writing through the years. #hsd1chat

A5: as far as I know, we’re not doing a portfolio. We do keep fitnessgram data that follows students from MS to HS #hsd1chat
  • cpierce2009 Oct 10 @ 10:47 PM EDT
I bet that would be a common issue with students of all ages! It would be interesting to see dif. methods for overcoming it. #hsd1chat
