#UKEdChat A1 Ideally by having time to think about issues/questions you have about that area so that you can get the help you and the school need. It would be best if these were presented to the trainer prior to the session so that it is tailored to those needs.
A1 The best preparation for a CPD training session is to make sure it is relevant. Information about CPD needs to be gained and used to inform planning. As participants for a CPD training session it's important to show professional courtesy for the person leading it. #UKEdChat
A1: Although not directly related, I always try to prepare my classroom for staff covering me if I'm out for the day at a CPD event. If I don't, I spend the whole time worrying what mess I'll come back to the next day! #ukedchat
A1: as one who would be attending I'd like some info prior to in order to read/prepare. Sometimes I attend cpd and am totally lost and overwhelmed. Yes by the end I 'get it' but even an agenda would help #ukedchat
Yes. Need analysis is key and without it, we can end up with too many 'blanket' approaches that aren't aligned to goals. This is often why evakuatuon of impact is so difficult. #UKEdChat
A2: In my experience, everyone has taken something from whole staff CPD, big or small. We have a staff of 40 and that seems ideal. Worked in a larger school with 60 staff, and that was too big IMO. #ukedchat
A1 #UKEdChat Never hurts to read up and know a little something about the topics you might encounter. You can then use the expert's knowledge and question them to reach beyond the CPD books.
A2 If a major change is happening then whole school CPD is vital. When I am leading CPD I like the teachers as a group (about 20 maximum) and the TAs as a group (about 20). It means I can tailor what I want to share with the two audiences. #UKEdChat
A2 I think if your having whole school CPD the relevance of it in different departments needs identifying then departments need to make it specific to them #ukedchat
There will always be 'whole school' need, especially if it is something that is a whole school change. However, there should also be provision at both team and individual level. The focus of these should always be informed by a need analysis #UKEdChat
Having attended one that was seemingly generic-digital literacy- the examples provided for many different subjects worked well. There were over 200 people there! If too generic it is hard to see how it can be of use, irrelevant of audience size #ukedchat
A2. Whole school CPD can help drive whole-school development areas. But the question assumes CPD = course/training session. CPD is much wider than that, and CPD can be delivered in different ways to different people & still contribute to a school-wide goal. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A2 My last school had a tailored CPD programme for all staff (inc. support staff) so that people weren’t sitting through things that weren’t 100% relevant. I don’t think the whole group size matters but the subsequent groups should be 4/5 to allow communication for all
#ukedchat A2 as part of our whole school cpd we all had a selection of workshops to pick from based on our personal targets. We all picked 3 each and there were around 20-30 per group. It was so much better and overall more effective than one session done for the sake of it.
Completely agree. We were asking about inset-style sessions, particular as they are common at this time of year. Naturally CPD is much wider... like #UKEdChat for example!😊
#UKEdChat A2 Can be useful, depending on the size of the staff and the topic. However, teachers and TAs should be interspersed so that they can benefit from each others' perspectives and not have tables of just TAs and others of just teachers.
A2: I think it’s really important that teachers realise CPD is not something that is done for you, it is something you do for yourself. Yes, the school should offer it & make it as relevant as possible. But it’s your obligation to yourself.. I would say. #UKEdChat
A3: I was unimpressed with the sheer enthusiasm at a pivotal training thinking it was utter nonsense until I tried it. Then wow! I changed my whole way of thinking. Another fab was a Jisc event! Not as enthusiastically delivered but still so much take away stuff! #ukedchat
A3: A session on Kagan activities about two years ago. VERY interactive, not much sitting and listening but chance to try out different activities and reflect with my department on what would work well. Good CPD builds in reflection time with colleagues #ukedchat
A3 outdoor learning session where we got to light fires. Fun, bonding and a lesson I’ve used every year since, linking it to science and social studies #ukedchat
Some people complain that the school doesn’t let them go on this or that course. Remember you don’t need permission to:
- try something new in your class and evaluate.
- read a research article and try the ideas.
- talk to colleagues about their experience
- etc.
- etc #UKEdChat
Q3 #ukedchat I love anything practical that can be taken straight back to the classroom. I enjoyed loads of tasks during a @clpe1 words & spelling session which I loved! Also making poetry using interesting vocab from a non-fiction text. Genius! 😍
#UKEdChat A3 All the Talk for Writing/Reading days I have been lucky enough to attend. Full of practical advice and @corbett_pie@PieCorbett and @Deanatfifty know how to run a CPD!

A3 I think Philosophy 4 Children training was one of the most memorable training activities I participated in (quite a few years ago!) It made me think differently about picture books, pieces of music and film clips. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A4 Anything where I have been talked at for the whole thing...worst model of CPD. A phonics training I had...6 hours of theory over 2 nights back to back #horrific
Q2 #ukedchat whole school cpd is important for shared vision/change but I also love the idea of conference style insets w/a keynote (or main cpd for all) followed by a range of workshops that staff can choose from, bringing staff together again at the end w/ an author/speaker💡
A4: I attended 1 that was promoted as one thing but was actually about something else. When the trainer was challenged he decided to skip 30(!) Slides which may have been of some use and then set us tasks in groups to deliver back to the whole, basically doing his job! #ukedchat
A3 More recently I went on a day of training with Literacy Shed and Grammarsaurus. It was enjoyable, informative and got colleagues from different schools working together and sharing ideas. #UKEdChat
We now do Talk It Over sessions which aim to give chn opportunity to talk about philosophical issues. I really enjoy them. Chn say the most profound things and when you talk about difficult issues their simple solutions are the best. If only we could stay like that! #UKEdChat
Pr - reading & info or even what the session is about. I have turned up to sessions where no prior info has been shared other than 'staff cpd' a1 #UKedchat
#UKEdChat A3 Not officially billed as such but watching a young author working with my class to quickly create verbal stories at a local library - they were so keen to write on return to school.
We do it as a half hour session per week where the class is split into two groups to give every child a chance to share their thoughts. The focus is on speaking and listening as well as spiritual, moral, social and culture development. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A4 The whole staff of the secondary school had to play drums in time together. The session lasted one hour. We each had a different instrument. I had no idea why we did that. Staff just wanted to get ready for 1st day of term!
A4 Friday afternoon, 3.5 hour asthma training session, not a sight of anything remotely interactive. Got told at the end that new guidance was to come out later in the year and we’d need to refresh our knowledge...#ukedchat
This sounds great! I have a journal where I record all the P4C sessions I facilitate. I agree, the things children say can be so profound, and some comments they’ve made have shifted my own thoughts and opinions quite substantially. #UKEdChat
A2 - For a CPD process to have an impact on everyone, it needs to be linked closely to pupils’ learning needs, organisational goals and linked to the classroom and context of the teacher. CPD works well if it benefits teachers, pupils and whole-school improvement. #UKEdChat
A4 Agree with both of these. I've not enjoyed learning about coaching where I was partnered with someone who was rather dominant in role play sessions. But it was a good learning point about the importance of body language and was picked up on by trainer. #UKEdChat

A5: in the olden days we used to do a car treasure hunt. The winning team did the next year, the losers had to buy a round in the pub at the end! It was awesome, then petrol prices ruined it all! #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A5 I have seen some good team building around the sharing of resources for a particular topic, and also sharing a series of quotes with the room and getting people to discuss which ones they empathise with and why. But not for a CPL day....
A4 Once had a training session that when we arrived was told it was in fact an hour-long, group treasure hunt around the building - an actual treasure hunt with clues and riddles.. I have no idea what the purpose was. #ukedchat
A2 it can be & a consistent message & approach is vital. Having said that as an ey practitioner I have sat in many training sessions that haven't felt relevant. The top line would be enough to be a whole school team. Also eyfs cpd not invested in & shared as a school. #UKedchat
#UKEdChat A4 I cannot listen for long - unless they're a great storyteller - so anything where someone just talks at you and drones on for what feels like ages. Surely they should be demonstrating good practice for the classroom?!
A5. My personal belief and experience is that teams are fostered and developed over an extended period of time and experiences rather than through team-building activities on training days. #UKEdChat
Speaking and listening are so important and need to be developed before / alongside reading and writing. I love hearing what the children think about big questions. Or days later they say they've changed their mind or been thinking about it. Brill! #UKEdChat
A5: the value was getting staff buoyed up in the difficult Autumn term and making us think outside of the box to problem solve encouraging us to try and use these in our lessons for students. It really was good if random! #ukedchat
#ukedchat completely agree. There is so much we could deliver in the little time we get the staff, it needs to be linked to the academy goals and the studentslearning. No time for gimmicks!
#ukedchat A3 A live classroom performance of a classroom scenario using staff as pupils demonstrating the do's and don'ts. Hilarious and really useful!
If you have an I pad I would download @alanpeat I visulise fantastic tool for live feedback as you helicopter and land to provide live examples and feed back #ukedchat
A6 #ukedchat I usually make a little one pager which I circulate but also chat to staff informally and post on my blog/twitter eg https://t.co/3UN8x5Majn
A6: Rarely! I missed one this summer and there's not even a hint of a PPT being shared. Nobody has discussed it and so I can only assume it was of no use or nobody understood. I've asked and the general response is, "you've not missed much. You'll figure it out." #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A6 If individuals have attended training it will be a CPD session delivered to staff if worthwhile or (for major CPDs) there will be a ‘mop up’ session although not always followed up.
A5 think they do. With a background in corporate world I have seen how GOOD team building helps. I (sadly) haven't yet worked at a school that has recognised the importance of team building as a way to streamline colleague engagement. #ukedchat
It really is! Plus teachers were invited to lead workshops. I would have done it this new school year but I'm off on maternity in October so maybe a challenge for next year.
A6 #UKedchat Sharing resources whole-school, ensuring HoD has shoared the key information at fortnightly 1:1 meeting or just sitting them down and going through the key points with them.
A6 Usually we have all staff available for in house training sessions. A PowerPoint with key messages will be sent to all staff. The person leading training may also arrange to meet with colleagues who missed the session at another time so they hear messages first hand. #UKEdChat
I used to do a half termly newsletter when I was a HoF with a bit of cpd, key dates and an example of great student work. I got staff to share back for the next one!
A6 we have a weekly Friday morning meeting where we always intend to have time to share what courses/reading we’ve been doing but sometimes we don’t get through all the other school business chat before the bell goes #ukedchat
A6 Also if someone goes on external training there is an expectation that they will share good practice with the rest of the staff. This is done through regular sharing staff meetings. It keeps everyone in the loop! #UKEdChat
You had to follow slightly obscure directions then there were questions to answer to win the treasure hunt. One example was 'why are the horses so clean'...answer- the trough in the field was a bath. Using these q helped us to rethink how we asked q of students #ukedchat
#ukedchat I like that some schools use knowledge from staff (not just SLT), often find those are the best kinds of CPD as the enthusiasm can come across in the session. I ran a session on @Flipgrid in school

A1 #UKEdChat We have all the relevant documentation shared with us prior to the CPD session which leads to less prescriptive dialogue and more meaningful discussion around the application of whatever is being proposed in the session. Great in terms of better work / life balance.
108 books & 36 weeks of lesson plans supporting learners in using, finding and reading core words for FREE? Yes please! 😊 #UKedchat#augcomm#slpeeps#corewords
Did you know all of our Core First books are available for free online along with accompanying lesson plans and research background? You can buy hard copies as well, and it's all downloadable at no cost. We encourage everyone to check it out! 👉 https://t.co/55CidBXsAk#AAC
A6. Anyone suggest educational books / texts for staff to read as part of CPD? And then give time to discuss what has been read and reflect on what has been learned? It’s a different way of ‘disseminating’ - talking about what you’ve taken from something. #UKEdChat
A7 - have a real interest in edtech. Have turned to the USA and joining webinars from there run by @ClassTechTips. Would like to attend a training session on blended and or flipped learning #ukedchat
A7 #ukedchat SO MANY GREAT COURSES OUT THERE! Can’t wait to attend the @clpe1 Lit leadership course & also the Rethinking Writing Conference at the @britishlibrary, I’m also leading an @OpenUni_RfP@TeresaCremin Teachers Reading for Pleasure book group this year too!
In reply to
@ukedchat, @clpe1, @britishlibrary, @OpenUni_RfP, @TeresaCremin
A7 I am looking forward to the NPQH which I will be starting soon. I'm pleased the costs are covered by DfE funding. As a school I'd like whole staff CPD training about teaching art which may be happening as we are working towards the Artsmark Award. #UKEdChat
A7: Im currently in the middle of a #EdRes cpd through my #Cteach with @CharteredColl and it's fantastic. I'm also contemplating a subject CPD through the exam board whilst on maternity leave just to keep up to speed! #ukedchat
I think they have value! A personal favourite of mine is the escape room idea! Teams of up to 5 usually locked in a crystal maze style activity and you have to solve the clues to get out! Works well for both personal and professional lives I think! 😊
Q8 #ukedchat find out what they want to know about the topic first, keep it lively, practical & relevant with lots of ‘take away’ tips and activities that can be used in the classroom straight away! Be passionate, enthusiasm is infectious!
UKEdChat A5 Team building activities can be fun at the time but can have little effect moving forwards. However, working with staff from different age groups can be fascinating. It can be an opportunity to see how different approaches can be adapted for different classrooms.
A8 #UKedchat I don't have school staff but have delivered cpd in regards to PVE and P4C (philosophy for children) &training in previous (non teaching) roles. staff voice prior to sessions - what do you want to learn? how do you learn? Etc.Tailored learning like in the classroom.
A8: almost word for word what I was going to say. I also create a shared file/moodle I add to throughout the year and encourage them to share as well. The learning doesn't end when the training session does! #ukedchat
A6 - Best way is to use a shared drive/folder accessible to all. It makes accessing documents easy, convenient, and instantaneous. You can share files, assign tasks, edit documents, add comments, instantly share messages and all this can happen within a shared folder. #UKEdChat
A8 #UKEdChat Make sure those attending will take something from it. Share documentation prior to meeting to allow time for discussion. Give all staff the opportunity to lead CPD in their subject. Make outcomes clear with a sensible time given for completion. Keep to a time limit.
#UkEdChat A8 Base training on needs and keep focused and practical. Share agenda and adapt beforehand if needed. Ask staff to submit questions/experiences/issues. Consider mode of training - twilight/INSET can be quickly forgotten. Follow up tasks agreed at session.
A3 #UKEdChat definitely @alanpeat writing training, so many good ideas and Kagan cooperative learning, fab for getting interaction and pupil engagement up!
A8 1. Have clear aims to make it relevant. 2. Keep messages clear (don't waffle!) 3.Time is precious, don't make it too long. 4. Have activities that will encourage participants to talk and that they can take away to try with their class. 5. Get delayed feedback #UKEdChat
