First chat of 2018 for our amazing PLN. Hope the Admin. leaders from @waukeshaschools can join us for this half hour happening NOW—everyone can use a dose of Positivity to kick off 2018. #AWSAConnect#oneword2018
A1- it’s all about mindset. So I just go back to that and remember Nothing is worth making it a bad day. Do soemthing kind for others. That, or I walk down to our in school daycare and hang out with the little ones #AWSAconnect
A1: I find a trusted colleague or family member to talk to, sometimes on the way home as I wind down. Otherwise, I read more in a current YA novel that my Ss are reading to drift away #AWSAConnect
Hi #awsaconnect, joining late from Milton. I've been dealing with the near-loss of my kid's father so my word again this year is courage, which applies to all areas of my life. Live every day of your life!
Good for you! To parents?
Have you ever tried calling the parents of your teachers? One of the most impactful things I have done to develop positive relationships with my staff. #AWSAConnect
A2: I need to set the example and the tone for what we want our Ss and Ts to feel. Positive energy is contagious and momentum begins there! #awsaconnect
Hey #awsaconnect crew! At a basketball game doing my community connection and loving an event to raise funds for a staff member kicking cancer's butt! I'll try to check in.

A2: Take advice from @TechNinjaTodd and @awelcome by leaving it in the car. A quick @voxer chat, call to a friend, great podcast- all great ways to tie it a balloon and let it go. #AWSAConnect
q2 I definitely listen to my voxer friends and even vent if need to some of them. When I go home its time to be mom.. Not principal! If it is bad a good workout always helps! #AWSAConnect
A2 Not always easy. Have to find time to separate. Sometimes the best way to "deal" with something or solve something is to walk away from it for a while. Clear your mind. And what better way than to spend time with family?!?! #AWSAConnect
Q2- Deleted email off my phone. Most influential thing I did as a principal. Work stays at work unless called. Staff begin to answer own questions instead of rely on me. At home I can then focus on hobbies like dogsledding, firefighting, etc. me time. #AWSAconnect
A1: The next class of Ss look forward to being in my room. One rotten moment in my day shouldn’t affect my Ss when I only get to see them once a week. So sometimes I just have to fake a smile. The real smile is right behind it. #AWSAconnect
A2 Schedule the most trying things into my schedule for the first part of the next day, then let it go so I can crank some good tunes on the way home and get centered once again! #AWSAconnect
A2 Long commute helps to decompress, but I always remember that it’s one day in a very grand scheme of learning. One bad day or even a bad week isn’t going to break all the good. Plus a lot of times good comes from a bad day. #AWSAconnect
A2: I usually call my mom on my way home from work. She is a good listener. I also listen to music at high volumes=confession. Sometimes, I just stay later at school to help leave it there. #AWSAConnect
A3: Loudly and proudly share all the great things happening- tweet them, write notes, send them in emails, take pictures! Share, share, share! #AWSAConnect
A3 If you walk around with a smile, you're either happy or you are hiding something. I'll let the students and staff decide that on their own. #AWSAconnect
A2: Sometimes this is an area that is difficult for me. I don't think of the day as negative but moments that I want to be better for kids. Often, I spend time chatting with my admin sidekick and talking through how to be better. #awsaconnect
A3 I do the #GoodNewsCallOfTheDay for students and STAFF. I do a positive referral for my staff that parents and students nominate. This has been a game changer! #AWSAConnect
A2: My 30 minute drive home is the best way to decompress. Run through the rough stuff in your head and let it go. Then count your blessings and look forward to home. Think about your wife and kids. Think about dinner. Family is always first!!! #AWSAconnect
A3: Show appreciation. I'm a big fan of hand written notes. In today's age of technology, they stand out from the crowd and show you took time and effort. #awsaconnect
A3 Be positive! It sounds too simple, but it works. I never miss an opportunity to respond to a "how's it going?" or a "how are you?" question with a "I'm great!" or "Fantastic as usual."
#AWSAConnect
A2: #AWSAconnect I don't. Luckily, I'm home alone for about an hour, so it gives me time to think, reflect, and rationalize, and come to terms with whatever made the day negative.
I disabled my work email account during break, and I also have my phone in Do Not Disturb from 8 p.m. onward to deter me from getting amped up before bed. #AWSAConnect
A3 Always recognize the good that people do (or try to do). Every person who walks into a school is always trying to do right by kids. It’s important they know you know that. #AWSAconnect
Be kind, present, optimistic and peaceful -- even if I have to act myself into that mindset a bit some days. As the saying goes, "Attitudes are contagious. So what are you spreading?" #AWSAconnect
A3- SMILE! Take the time to talk to people and truly listen to what they have to say. Genuine kindness makes all the difference! #relationshipsmatter#AWSAConnect
A3: Back to my #OneWord2018 of “Kindness” I take time to walk the halls for 2 purposes—smile/say hi to staff & get my steps in. Both wins. Had a teacher today say, “It’s so nice to see you in my room.” Can’t underestimate the power of visibility for those we serve. #AWSAconnect
A3: Have conversation, write thank yous, make phone calls, listen, be a champion of learning and leading...laugh and talk with staff and students #awsaconnect
I have my #OneWord2018 on my black dry erase board on my office door. I shared it today during a re-teaching conversation w/ 1 of my toughest kids & his case manager. I was honest about how difficult it can be, & how worth it when every day is a fresh start 2 be KIND #AWSAConnect
