trying to get my ss to understand that sometimes an answer is not just "right" or "wrong"
I tell them if they already know everything without mistakes they shouldn't be in 5th grade
great lesson/skill to have! We also talk about different paths to an answer - many roads take you home
I also share my mistakes w/them so they see everyone makes mistakes.
Q2: What tools do you use in the classroom to promote math engagement?
A1: Tough to teach the grey at the elementary level, abstract thinking usually begins in the 7-9 grades.
Currently Ss working on a "March Madness" math project...one component has them looking at seeding and win pct. for each seed. 1/2
I try to purposefully make mistakes Seems to give them confidence to "help" me
currently doing math groups w/video chat with a class in DE, I'm in AL. SS solve word problem & explain strategies to each other
A2: Tech - smartboard, ipads, chromebooks. Try to make Qs relevant, not textbook ones. More activity the better
A2: Sumdog, Kahoot, Quizizz, IXL, Digitwhiz...
2/2 Ss noticed that 1v16 and 2v15 are pretty obvious, but 8v9 and 10v7 not as clear. Struggled w/Q: "Does seeding matter?"
A2: Any assignments which feature student choice.
nice! Love the idea. We are on spring break now, so mine would be jumping in late, interested to see how that goes
A2: Love the mystery skype!
I haven't heard of Digitwhiz, what do you use it for?
That'll be $179. Do you have a discount? Yes That'll be $199. Uh. Okthen not a teacher.
A2 Verso, Lensoo, Socrative
I'll be sure to post their final presentations!
A2: We did a for a Geometry Quiz and a for volume and capacity, Ss loved them both
A2: I use chromebooks, , IXL, Kahoot, Ipads but really want to increase my engagement.
Differentiating instruction by targeting skills students lack through math games. I think it is now a pay site.
Aimee from SK, Canada, joining a little late this evening
A2 I've also been flipping lessons via
agree. We are not back in school until Monday.
thought about doing similar to but have groups make board for 10,000 pyramid
you could get Ss to create the games for the class
A2: we just finished capacity unit. Students solved word problems, showed/explained strategies using Doceri https://t.co/QUUnWEXRCr
Great tools! Question 3 coming up.
That have shared Google folder, end goal is to have them wrote their own word problems
Q3: What lesson do you feel has been best at increasing problem solving skills and engagement in math?
Anyone using number talks? We just started.
A3 Not a lesson, per se, but is a great repository of real-world problem solving prompts. Generates lots of conversation
love the idea but there's never enough time
A3: Math games such as Jenga Math. Integrate math into Jenga and Guess Who? Graphing Battleship, and a version of Connect Four.
A3: My Ss have been doing ! They love it! They share through , Slides, recordings, and even their desks!
A2 - We've also used Paper app and PicCollage to show different ways to represent numbers.
A3: I think it has to be a combination. A problem to solve more then just a Q to answer
not familiar, I'll have to check that out!
I hear ya! I don't do it justice yet, but I try to squeeze it in few times a week. No more than 5 min. I use a timer!
Hey everyone! If you can sign up to moderate a future , that would be awesome!!! https://t.co/yJZcW6V8iI (If link doesn't work LMK.)
I have a tab open! Thanks
I'm planning Easter egg hunt next week with word problems in the eggs.
A3 Explicitly teach problem solving strategy: C.U.B.S. Circle the , Underline the ?, Box the keywords, Solve/Sentence answer
Ss get to move a Jenga piece if they solve a problem or answer a math question correctly.
Groups find the egg, solve the problem, find another egg. High engagement
I love all math games. Looks like I need Jenga now. I already have collection of dice/cards.
I am going to do that this week too! Awesome idea!
Q4: How do you combat the I "can't" or "too hard" attitudes in a classroom?
A3 Solve many word problems, not necess. using current unit knowledge. Ex: throw in an adding ? during a unit on probability
A4 Offer choice! Provide questions at diff levels, let Ss choose which ? to answer.
I just printed out some task cards I had. Bought eggs & buckets & I'm ready to go. Did it last yr & ss loved it.
A4: With some coaxing, group/partner work, accepting atmosphere, we reward trying as much as the answer we are looking for
A4- My kids will tell you now if you think you can't, you can't. Heard me say it all yr
What will the unit be? or a smattering of all?
A4:I tell them that it's like basketball at recess. When they miss they just chase the ball down and shoot again. They don't quit.
Funny I always put my hand up and say "mind block!" They laugh and say I know we can!
A4 I try open-ended Qs as well. Students can answer at own level. Although sometimes ss struggle w/idea of no 1 right answer
A4:Remind that world's smartest mathematicians work on a problem for a lifetime and some never solve it. It's about working on it.
A4 I ask them: what do you know? What part are you having trouble with? What strategy might work?
My Ss have the same struggle! We talk about two paths and sometimes there is more that 1 right answer.
Loving all your ideas! Kind of a math geek, though!
A4: Let them give me a difficult task to work through.
I used to hate math in school...learning how to teach it, esp. with problem solving, made me love it!
A4:Have to make sure we don't have right/wrong assessments, give credit for thinking and recording thoughts.
I spend lots of time showing diff ways to get answers. Many strategies, you find what works best for you.
Q5: Have you "ditched the textbook" or do you use your math curriculum?
We do a LOT of sharing of strategies when prob. solving. Ss share their solutions with AppleTV, talk about their strategy. 1/2
A5 getting ready to ditch it. Starting to skip around and add in lots of other things.
A5:We use math curric., Primary Math, and like it. Supplement a little here and there.
This has REALLY helped Ss get that there's more than 1 right way to get the answer. 1 more way to celebrate differences 2/2
A5: I am a ditcher this year we were supposed to follow with fidelity, since it was new.
A5: Tossed it faaaaaar away! Ditched it early, in favor of more meaningful Qs and activities
A5 Only use book for practice pgs- so I've ditched it! Always tell my kids what we do is
A5: I teach curriculum outcomes, not textbooks.
A5:Before Primary Math I did a lot of and used my own materials.
We do things to practice math and then I'll ask if it was - they always say yes!
Final Question of the Night: How do you assess that your Ss understand the math standards? What is your favorite way to assess?
A5 games, IWB activities, explorations, stations, ind. assignments. Show thinking using diff apps and (gasp!) sometimes a worksheet
No textbook or required curricular materials - inquiry-based with some scaffolded stand-alone strands https://t.co/bEUt9NHtMJ
Q5: Have you "ditched the textbook" or do you use your math curriculum?
A6 Use for quick responses. Ss also love Space Race! .
Love having SS explain how to solve problems to each other or create videos to explain to parents.
Do you have an example? Sounds awesome!
A6: few different ways - video, paper and pencil, game (kahoot, breakout etc) could even be an exit slip
A5: Poll services such as Kahoot, Quizizz, number talks, Google forms.
Performance-based, whenever possible. Lots of practice & time to explain thinking/solutions w/o grades https://t.co/IpcJ6fjebn
Final Question of the Night: How do you assess that your Ss understand the math standards? What is your favorite way to assess?
Great idea for assessment. Way more fun than a worksheet!
They love to make the videos too!
Natural ties to our inquiry-based financial unit, + measurement w/maker-space activities
A5: Activities which speak to all of the learning styles.
Make videos to show how to do a math concept. Ss shows how to measure capacity of a container: https://t.co/AobkEnV6cC
would love to hear how you use for math instruction!
Can't you "ditch the textbook" and still use the math curriculum? 💡
I'd love to create some Breakout games for my ss!
YES! textbook =/= curriculum.
Still learning, but even the idea that some things require precision or else you have to re-do them (like measuring!)
they are awesome! Ss really love them. I am planning one on Egypt for after our break
Green screen & ipad allow ss to make videos explaining math concepts or ipad &Explain Everything
Also, compare diff methods with applied math skills - how much? how long? how fast? - efficiency/problem-solving
