The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
Hi! Lauren, K-5 Instructional Coach, Indiana and one of our co-moderators for tonight’s #educoach chat. My #eduwin is sustaining great momentum with current coaching work in a busy time of year!
Starts with great partnerships! Also, having plans of action in place and being intentional and mindful of how to best utilize teachers’ time to keep moving forward. #educoach
That's perfect! Great way for coaches to backward design their work. Get these things in place so that it carries you through challenging times! #Educoach
Hi! Cory from Waco, TX. Regional IC and Digital Innovation Specialist. My #eduwin this week is spreading the news on the power of video in coaching #educoach
A1 if there is an issue with classroom management, there is less opportunity for powerful instruction. Supporting classroom management supports achievement and helps the T gain control #educoach
A1: Getting the opportunity to support the needs of students through a social and emotional lens for learning; having a collaborative partner to brainstorm management strategies and/or have the ability to help identify blind spots #educoach
A2: Keep support focused on the student and less on the teacher. Use students to drive decision making, yet take teaching style/environment into consideration. #educoach
As @lsmith0917 mentioned, IC can point out blind spots T might not be aware of, such as calling on the same Ss over and over, neglecting a few others. #educoach
A2 supporting T with reflecting and visioning around what their ideal classroom looks like and designing backwards. Focus on celebrating strengths. #educoach
Yes - celebrating success is powerful. There is always success. We have to keep our eyes open for it. Share with T. Often if they are feeling amiss w/management they are quite down on themselves. Coaches can build them up! #educoach
A3 Teacher can help set. Could be transition times, positive to negative interactions, time on task, engagement, etc... #educoach Could also be on a success area that will impact a challenge area. #educoach
A3: I’ve collected data on engagement, on task/off task, teacher talk vs student talk, participation, transitions, etc. for current reality data #educoach
A3 video is so helpful here. Best way I know to get to current reality. Depending on the focus for classroom management looking at waiting, transitions, routines and opportunities to respond are good data. #educoach@SibmeApp
Exactly. Students need to be apart of the goals. They need to know the purpose/why for certain routines that help class run smoothly and learning to happen! #educoach
A4: while there are some innovative LMS platforms that track, it is minimal. Baked rubrics are a great way to support students in exceeding expectations. #educoach
A5: Another way to set goals with T, mentioned in earlier questions tonight -- asking T what they want their classroom to look like, sound like? What do they picture? #educoach
I think defining what the desired behavior is and how you would measure it it important. Getting Ts to visualize the impact helps them clarify goals. As opposed to just a goal like “better transitions” #educoach
I've had Ts and Ss track transition times. Kind like building independent reading stamina, but in reverse. How quickly (but orderly) can we get ready for the next portion of our day. Time, record, debrief quickly. #educoach
A5: Support T in gathering current reality in one content area or focus during the day. Start small and make goals measurable. Also, keep the management area of focus action oriented. #educoach
A6 I've had success with asking T what data he/she would like me to collect in the area of management and they collect something academic (formative assessment). When we meet we use both sets of data in our reflections. #educoach

A7: 1:1 virtual coaching for instructional coach with @KathyPerret helped me develop plans and gather resources for coaching classroom management. #educoach
A7: I think that being vulnerable enough to truly develop relationships with students has to be the start. Then books on practices or even more so, real conversation with the classroom of kids would follow. #educoach
A8 Make sure you have a goal to get to academic/student learning. Sometimes "management" may be our own comfort zones. As Ts we had well managed classrooms. Step into content soon. Pair w/management/engagement #educoach
A8: Be specific about your expectations with the Ss. Share what you expect as they work. Reflect afterwards on how well they did meeting the expectations. #educoach
A8: see A7 as learners, we have to keep it real with our fellow learners (students)... doesn’t mean no rules or expectations, but value as members of the classroom community #educoach

Like @AdamKulaas said, vulnerability is key. Also, I’ve never found it beneficial to model classroom management- taking control of a classroom for a teacher doesn’t help the situation. #educoach
A9: greatest aspect of education is that it is forever, tough days(or even weeks) are a snapshot of the big picture. I would often say marathon not a sprint #educoach
