Tonight we are talking student buy in. Thank you @unlearnreteach for tonight’s topic. What does it look like? How do you create it? What are the challenges? #flipclass#flipclasschat Join us!
The activity has to be engaging, but the challenging thing is not every topic and lesson is to young kids. Bringing in technology or collaboration helps a lot. #FlipClass
We'll be using Q1/A1 format to help keep the conversation going. Make connections and have those important side convos with new #flipclass peeps. Be sure to include #flipclass in your tweets. Let's get going...
#flipclass I'm here I'm here!!! Cara.... instructional coach.... former biology & anatomy teacher. I'm from Texas and I am a super mom bc I have fed, bathed, homeworked and played with my kiddos. They are now vegging with a movie allowing me to join you tonight!!!
A1: Like anything in education, relationships form strong foundations. Greeting Ss, being interested in their lives outside class, being active in the school community. Flip or not, w/o relationships effective education does not exist #flipclass
A1 Buy for #flipclass happens IN the class. It should be fun, engaging, and demonstrate to the students that this method of instruction is BEST for them. When you take the time to get to know your students and create a fun learning environment, they will definitely buy into it
A1 1st time college T, learning that choosing and paying for class doesn't guarantee buy in, working on relationships and value of information and activities #flipclass
A1 hoping actually talking, working problems and solving physics challenges is a better learning experience than sitting and listening to physics for 1hr+ #flipclass
Welcome to #FlipClass chat. I would love to hear if they are teaching future teachers about #flipclass at Iowa State??? And if any of your college professors are using #flipclass in their own classes???
A1b I also find that students will buy in more if they feel that you have put in the work for their learning; organized, accessible, S choice, resources, etc so they feel sturucture and support #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1: T confidence and belief that what is happening is what's best, even if it is uncomfy. Admit mistakes and celebrate successes. By modeling these behaviors Ss realize not everything is perfect & can also relate #flipclass
Hey @lanier_katiesue we also ought to mention that as part of giving #flipclass a freshenup we are also introducing the #flipclasschat tag to help cut bck on some of the spam and commercial stuff that has attached itself to #flipclass
I participated in this chat to learn more about flip class and I’ve heard of it before but not in detail. I would like to know more how to organize and the benefits of #flipclass
S choice is very important when it comes to student buy in! When Ss feel like they have a say and can decide how they get to learn, then they feel more empowered to actually put in the work! Not to mention they discover what learning technique is best for them! #FlipClass

I agree! I think if Ss know that a teacher is passionate about meeting their needs and putting forth the effort to personalize curriculum, then they will respond better in the classroom! #FlipClass

Welcome to #flipclasschat Sammy! Just curious if your university is teaching y'all about #flipclass? Or if any of your college professors are using #flipclass in their own classes?

A2 I think the greatest influence on student buy in is offering choices for student assignments and projects. When students feel like they are in control of their learning, they'll be more inclined to do their work #FlipClass
getting around to A2: @khogendorp mentioned staying the course even through the tough bits, but a brighter way to look at it is focus on the adopters and feed their passion, while building relationship with Ss slow to jump on board #flipclass#flipclass chat
A2 Had a student who always asked 'why do I have to do this?'. Now I ask myself the same thing, making sure even drill has value that can be explained #flipclass
A2: Use technology, incorporate fun collaborative activities, love to do breakout with anything and keep it changing so students are involved in different types of learning #FlipClass#FlipClassChat
Hi Cara! I am an "Integrated Educational Studies" major and I have learned about #flipclass through a course I'm taking right now called "Applications of Computers" #FlipClass
A2 I feel that student buy in is centered around students being interested and engaging in deep learning also student centered learning is a big factor as well because students are in control of their own learning. #flipclass
Along with passion I think it's important for teachers to always keep the class moving and the kids active! When there's down time, that's when students start to get bored and disinterested #FlipClass
Unfortunately, many kiddos are NOT interested in learning. It's our job to create an envir. that is engaging & sparks curiosity about the lesson. Only then do you get more kiddos interested and wanting to learn more. #flipclass gives teachers the time in class to do this!
I think a good relationship with students is SUPER important for student buy in! If Ss feel like the teacher cares about them, then the Ss will care too #FlipClass
That's what I've been learning! I also think collaboration with other teachers is just as important as planning! Hearing what works and doesn't work in other classrooms could greatly improve your teaching strategies! #FlipClass
Have to wonder if it's disinterest or overwhelmed feeling that hinders learning. Having T present to actively guide learning makes a difference. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A3: I try to but don't always get to it. I have a hard time buying in myself and don't really see students internalizing it, but need to try more consistently. I always explain what we are learning that day though #flipclass#flipclasschat
A3 I like to post objectives so that students have a understanding of what they will be doing and what they should take away. It also helps me guide my lesson plans as a future teacher. #flipclass
I give S "I can" statements at start of each unit. The are district objectives - very eduvocab heavy. Right now this is b/c time constraints. "Eduvocab" = patent pending #flipclasschat#flipclass
Oh even I am guilty of that! I felt like I wasted so much time in high school because my teachers were disengaged and only taught us what we needed to know for state tests and that's all they cared about! #FlipClass
A3 adding objectives to my assignments as they are created to double check that I'm covering the curriculum at the correct level (the college pace is killing me, poor Ss!). #flipclass
A3 I had teachers who wrote objectives on the board everyday in middle and high school, but tbh I didn't really pay any attention to them. I think it's good for planning, but not necessary for students to have #FlipClass
Let's be real...Most Ts post the objective bc their admin, tells them to do so. The ultimate purpose is to make sure the Ss know their learning objective. As an IS, I like it too bc it encourages the T to take a moment & figure out their lesson's obj. #flipclass#keepingitreal
A3: I shared this last week, but here's an example of the standards I share each unit. Today we did Unit 1 "post" checklist & S received Unit 2 objectives & did "pre" checklist #flipclass#flipclasschat
A4: I try to teach lessons that I myself am engaged in and hype it up to students. Also brag and recognize progress and achievement in many areas to help them buy into their growth #databooks#flipclass#flipclasschat
Q4 Starting #flipclass is all fun until the newness wears off and Ss start to struggle and ask that you go back to teaching. Back to those relationships & honesty to keep Ss going until successful. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A4 I think it's important to start really strong at the beginning to catch student interest! Obviously not every topic is interesting for everyone, so I think it's more about HOW you're teaching, not WHAT you're teaching #FlipClass
A4: for my upper Ss they begin to realize all the supports I provide with #flipclass as material gets tougher as year moves on. for lower Ss they buy in when I allow them opportunity to recover mastery (grades, eligibility) and care enough to reteach.

I really like this format!! There's no better feeling than being able to check something off a list, so if students accomplish something and can say they're at a 3 now, I think it will empower them a lot #FlipClass
A4 You're right, not everything we teach is interesting &fun, but it's the Ts challenge to find SOMEWAY to make it relevant to the Ss life. #flipclass If unable to do so at least integrate technology, collaborative activity, or game to keep students focused on the learning.
yes I do! I really love this at the college level. these are folks that either are adults or are learning to be adults and cleaning up your messes is the story of adulthood. #flipclass#flipclasschat
I am not sure they basked in the "relevance" but was psyched when I connected a calculus topic about functions with manufacturing of nearly everything they touch. they may not care, but they saw my honest excitement and that is contagious #flipclass
A5: Be confident. Have the lesson be organic to your style. There are MANY ways to flip. Flipping enhances what you already do in the classroom. #flipclasschat#flipclass
I will never forget my high school calculus teacher would make jokes about finding the arc length of each other's butts LOL somewhat inappropriate, but it caught our attention and helped us understand! #FlipClass
A5 There is no point in standing in front of the room teaching something if there is no buy in from the students. Find a way to connect #FlipClass#flipclasschat
A5: you don't have to flip perfectly (impossible) but be organized, willing to adapt to Ss needs, while staying the broad curricular and pedagogical course. #flipclass#flipclasschat
