Welcome to today’s #ldchat! This is Dan with the Understood team. Pediatric Occupational Therapist and Understood expert Keri Wilmot (@toyqueen) is joining us to chat about sensory processing issues in the classroom.
Q2: Create a sensory diet with motor exercises to complete a few times per day at school and home to help with arousal and self-regulation for attention #ldchat
Q3: Sensory tools like stress balls, koosh balls, fidget spinners, and theraputty can help kids feel less overwhelmed and help focus when listening to a lesson #ldchat
A3: Teaching kids yoga poses, therapy ball activities, and other games like Twister and having a dance party can help with body awareness and self-regulation #ldchat
A4: Many escalate their activity level, you see running, bumping and crashing with a hard time stopping. Re-direct and offer safe, heavy work sensory diet activities that involve pushing/pulling #ldchat
A4: Some kids cry, scream, react, cover their ears and are aggressive with a fearful response, no reaction to pain. Re-direct to a safe, but less stimulating environment, offer a self-regulation item like a fidget, speak quietly and calmly #ldchat
It's all about self-regulation, if kids have good restful sleep, and the blanket helps them do that, then they can get started off on the right foot the next day! #LDChat
