Join your fellow coaches and educators to chat about all things speech and debate! As part of each month's CONNECT Focus week we'll virtually gather to collaborate, ask questions, and network. #NSDAchat is an easy and fun way to connect with other coaches, teachers, and those who are passionate about speech and debate.
Hello! I am so excited to see all of you here tonight! I'm Lauren and I live in Des Moines, IA. I used to be a 6-12 ELL teacher and a 9-12 speech and debate teacher - now I work for @speechanddebate! #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
A1: The cliche is true! Today's students are the future of our society! They must be able to advocate for themselves clearly and effectively. But they also must be willing to listen to the perspectives of others - even those with whom they disagree. #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
A1:/Speaking and listening is something humans do every day, and is even more commonplace in routine decision-making, negotiating, and collaborating than reading and writing. #WordsMatter#NSDAchat
A1: When we watch the news, read the paper or just simply overhear others conversations, it’s obvious that we are living in a generation that needs to learn how to listen to others and advocate for what is right. #wordsmatter#nsdachat
Hi Shane! Great to see you here at #NSDAchat! As an edu-podcaster, I'd imagine speaking and listening always on your mind! Any experience with podcasting with students?
A1: kids need to learn showing and listening because they are vital elements of civil discourse. It's really hard to be a jerk if you make a habit of truly listening. #NSDAchat
A1: I wish listening was first because it’s key. Good listeners speak from awareness...and students need skills in speaking and listening in order to be effective problem solvers. #NSDAchat
Hello Claudio! I really enjoyed your Adobe Spark how-to video! I even added it to our Words Matter: PLN Collection on https://t.co/Tj4Wske8e1! #NSDAchat
A1: Speaking and listening are core skills that youth need in literally every context of their lives- school, relationships, future careers. Being able to communicate effectively is a skill that will benefit them and their communities throughout their entire lives #NSDAchat
#NSDAchat#wordsmatter these skills are the crux of all possible futures for our students! (Alex/ Mr. B - Current HS Drama, English, Technology teacher, and future elementary/middle assistant principal, in Des Moines!)
A1: I wish listening was first because it’s key. Good listeners speak from awareness...and students need skills in speaking and listening in order to be effective problem solvers. #NSDAchat
A2:
Scaffolding! My acting class starts semester in silence, in large group, then small group, then alone. Then we add speaking in large group, small group, and finally alone. #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
A1: When Ss share their stories it’s first by speaking, when they learn empathy it’s from listening to others’ stories! We need to teach both skills and the disposition to share #NSDAchat
Hi Jen! Glad to connect with you in this chat! I didn’t make it to FL for the #PioNear summit because of the conflict with our S&D season in Ohio. #NSDAchat
A2: When I was teaching, I'd share tidbits about my own life and be willing to talk about myself as a person outside of the classroom. That helped me to develop connections that weren't academic. They'd start sharing too. Its a foundation to build upon! #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
A2: Building trust and rapport with students is the vital prerequisite to comfort. Students must feel respected and know their voice is powerful in the education process. #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
#NSDAchat A1:Reality of the world is students are constantly bombarded by a plethora of sound bites. How do we help them navigate what is noise & what is worth dissecting? Speaking with confidence, heart, & expression, especially in my #EAL community is a component of empowerment
A2: Its certainly not a new strat but I made time to attend school activities beyond what was required. Waving at a student after their concert or game is a small step toward personal connection beyond curriculum. You can be respected but still relateable. #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
A2: In our professional development program, we encourage teachers to set expectations for students to show respect by listening quietly when another student is talking and clapping when they're done. We also make it a norm that a student stands when he or she speaks #NSDAchat
A2: student expression comes in many forms. It's important to provide them with many options so they can find a way to comfortably communicate. #NSDAchat
A2: Culture, culture, culture! Build the courage to share through partnerships and small group work, honor Ss voices by moving out of their way, facilitate conversation with prompts that keep Ss front and center #NSDAchat
A2:/Creating safe, affirming atmosphere where listening without judgment is encouraged, then determine what conclusions can be drawn from synthesizing varied perspectives. Teachers must hold back from offering their own perspectives and let students contribute first. #NSDAchat
A2: Learn to pronounce your students' names correctly. Don't give them a nickname 'cause its 'hard.'
Learn their name. While youre at it -- Learn their pronouns. Keep trying until you get it. And then still keep trying. #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
A2: Give them practice in smaller groups with increasing amounts of time. Provide them ways to think about their speaking. Emulate what they admire about other speakers. And finally teach them how to provide specific and timely feedback for one another. #NSDAchat
Mutual respect for the perspectives and opinions of others. Kindness, consideration, & compassion. Appreciate the experiences you all at @speechanddebate provide for so many students! #NSDAchat
A2: In our professional development program, we encourage teachers to set expectations for students to show respect by listening quietly when another student is talking and clapping when they're done. We also make it a norm that a student stands when he or she speaks #NSDAchat
A3:/Every lesson can have elements that encourage "table talk," quick paired perspectives among students about specific concepts; or even sharing best practices for elements of long-term project work. #WordsMatter#NSDAchat
A3: Moments to focus on speaking & listening should be EVERYWHERE in a school. In our halls, on our school buses, in locker rooms, cafeterias, playgrounds, and sidewalks. Would love to see & hear ways on how schools are doing this well! #NSDAchat
A3: Attempted my first @ArgumentDriven Inquiry last week in chemistry class - students complete expt to develop claim, support with evidence, argue a position #NSDAchat
Q3: Didn't have the chance when I was teaching but if I was I'd like to try @Flipgrid, @AdobeSpark, and have my students do podcasting! I'd also like to do more flipped-classroom-strats. What else am I missing when it comes to #edtech? #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
A3: Mathematical discourse grows learning for all of our Ss, increases relational equity, and creates the opportunity or Ss to share strategies and build their speaking and listening skills. @joboaler is a phenomenal resource #NSDAchat
OHH! Love, LOVE, love Podcasting. It is a great synthesis tool after students explore non fiction texts. (That is how I currently use it... how else could I use it... hmm...) Ah! Podcasting is also EASY tech wise. #NSDAchat
Also, showing that you know and care about your students outside the classroom. Often, we focus on what is happening in the classroom and forget that our students spend much more time out of school so showing we value that helps them feel more connected and comfortable. #NSDAchat
Agreed! Our professional development program works with teachers of every subject, including music and arts, to use encourage students voice and discussion, with evidence, throughout the curriculum #NSDAchat
SO important, Renee! Once kids feel comfortable opening up to one another and adults around them in a variety of contexts -- formal and informal -- they will become better advocates for themselves and others. #NSDAchat
Q4: Multiple of opportunities for students to demonstrate proficiency. I'm an actual speech educator and - trust me - I've given my fair share of bad speeches!! Give students multiple chances to "get it" before grading. We have off days and so do they. #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
One of the best parts of S&D is being in so many buildings in a year. I love it when schools and teachers have language on the door that values diversity! #youmatter#NSDAchat
#NSDAchat#wordsmatter A2: Turn your room into a cafe. Kids will gather, talk and share in a more relaxed setting. Way less threatening and cold. Use media publications for authentic speaking work that builds confidence through empowering revision. https://t.co/OTEZizSVlB
A4: involving the students in the process as often/as much as possible. The speaking (and listening) is more effective if they have ownership in their own speaking (and listening) - probably a look at how I do lots of assessment. #nsdachat 1/
Yes love this idea. Giving students options on assignments (paper or speech; artistic expression or video) are also ways to help students realize their preferences and how to best express themselves. #NSDAchat
My Listening page https://t.co/sg9sVfQJty “We have two ears and one mouth, so we should listen more than we say.”
― Zeno of Citium “Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity..." #NSDAchat
A4: #NSDAchat the student involvement could be in rubric creation, or in speaking/listening opportunities. Conversations with students can serve as formative assessments, too - as teachers we just have to listen to them. 2/2
Everywhere!! Across disciplines and topics and activities, these activities only enhance learning! My kids in AP Lang LOVED doing four corners and class debate and BEGGED to do them more! #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
Q4: Whenever I introduce a new speech assignment in the college classroom, I do two things. 1st, I provide actual instruction on the speech (that’s often forgotten outside intro to public speaking). 2nd, I *do* the speech for them (often a speech on the speech). 1/2 #NSDAchat
#NSDAchat#wordsmatter A3: Screenplays and performances; writing the texts for picture books and reading the ES kids; shared listening to powerful podcasts; community media integration; PSAs; What's Your Song?; Spoken word poetry; student-led workshops: https://t.co/Mnzvmmd33o
@TCRWP has fantastic rubrics for purposeful talk. We also co-create anchor charts w/Ss after watching exemplars of Ss engaging in small group work. We use iPads to create artifacts and self-assess using our rubrics. #NSDAchat
A4:/Peer and self evaluation as well as by the instructor (with appropriate modeling of effective feedback) to consider various factors, including attentiveness, ability to synthesize content, depth and accuracy of peer feedback, organization of thoughts, etc. #NSDAchat
Q4: After doing the speech, I have the students do group versions live in class. They have prep time, do slides, etc., and then they perform. Afterward, we debrief and talk about what kinds of preparation and practice are necessary to do the speech well “for real.” 2/2 #NSDAchat
We also find peer feedback to be powerful, and agreed, there needs to be appropriate modeling and discussion of what effective positive and constructive feedback involves @AdamJacobi#NSDAchat
A4:/Peer and self evaluation as well as by the instructor (with appropriate modeling of effective feedback) to consider various factors, including attentiveness, ability to synthesize content, depth and accuracy of peer feedback, organization of thoughts, etc. #NSDAchat
Yes. It’s shocking to me how many college speech assignments basically are “give a presentation on X” with no instructional days devoted to presentational skills. In my realm, the result is #deathbypowerpoint. Better to spend the day teaching some #presentationzen. #NSDAchat
#NSDAchat#wordsmatter No secrets.Students help create authentic rubrics & formative assessments from a 21CenturyLearning Communication & Collaboration Rubric + Common Core, helping build content & language objectives to our PBL & #TeachSDGs#GlobalGoals work.We use this w kids
A4: I’ve also found self reflection to be a good tool in assessment. Having students analyze and reflect on the feedback they’ve gotten as well as do a video of themselves to which they compare their feedback and reflect can be powerful. #NSDAchat
#NSDAchat Q1: interpersonal communication skills are the implementation of knowledge. Having students dialogue allow for deeper understanding and defense of ideals.
One idea is having Ss build expectations or guidelines for talk, chat, or debate in the classroom. If it comes from them it will have more meaning than if an educator came up w/ protocol. #NSDAchat#wordsmatter
#NSDAchat Q2: I have some amazing teachers who have implemented tech to allow students to record their voices and turn into teachers to help get over fears. That scaffolds to in front of class speaking very quickly each time.
