Meet and chat with colleagues about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on Twitter! The best hour of professional learning you'll get in 30 minutes. Held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9-9:30PM ET.
Warm up: Introduce yourself, and one of the paths or viewpoints you look through UDL with.
Example: My name is Kimberly from California @FresnoKremenEdu . I look at UDL to support school administrators to provide better staff meetings.
#udlchat
Kate Edgren, fresh off a snow day in chilly IN! I use UDL with teachers to design more flexible and accessible learning environments for students. #UDLchat
Danny Smith, from Toronto. Lately I been thinking a lot about UDL from a cultural diversity perspective in the hope of connecting more with international students #udlchat
Rhianon from Boston. I use UDL to work with teachers, district staff, and professionals in arts education to be more proactive designers of learning - for our young learners and adult learners. #UDLchat
Hi all- I'm Katie. UDL are my glasses. I view everything through the lens of accessibility and engagement. Ask the hubby, @lonnovak - even dinner with the 4 kids is a nightly buffet!! #udlchat
Hey it’s Bryan from MI. I use #UDL to help districts reframe & redesign their educational operating systems to move from Trad. bureaucratic pipelines to Learner Centered platforms #udlchat
Hi, y'all! I'm Jon. I teach 7th Grade ELA in Gainesville, FL (75 and sunny today). My UDL lens is focused on equity and inclusion in the classroom. #UDLchat
A1: The guidelines now have a horizontal eastern global “flow”. Overall the changes have a congruent instructional “flow” design. #UDLchat#eme6408@michelestork
I’m Mia from Orlando- Tech Resource Spec, I look through the lens of incorporating UDL providing PD for teachers, teaching T’s & admin about UDL& practicing it through creating opportunities to teach literacy to ALL learners, esp w/complex cognitive& communication needs #UDLchat
Ahoy mateys! 🏴☠️ Glade to be here in raining, snowing, sleeting Boston, as assistant superintendent, thinking about importance of executive functions to all of our work in schools #UDLChat
A1(cont.): It’s also interesting to see that CAST is utilizing a numeric organizational checkpoint/ structure for UDL guidelines. #UDLchat#eme6408@michelestork
Megan from Brooklyn, NY (by way of San Francisco) - I use #udl to engage my team in more purposeful and authentic 1:1 check-ins. Just as students all learn differently, so do our team members. Coaching with a UDL lens and mindset has made a huge impact! #UDLchat
A1: #UDLchat I find the new dynamic guide, versatile and great to read. the links make it easier for me to understand each point in a practical way. I'm taking advantage of my summer vacation studying it
Hi #UDLchat
I'm Lisa Regan DeRoss, principal at Marlton School for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing in Los Angeles. I've been championing #UDL here on the West Coast as the best way ru m too facilitate inclusive learning environments.
I immediately noticed the "play" button in the upper right hand corner for text to speech, the much simpler design and font that helps me focus on the content, and the awesome, easy-2-find categories at the top. #udlchat#udlguidelines
#udlchat ours includes making math cognitively accessible with lots of visuals and careful use of language for minimum confusion, times tables charts, and tutoring support...
That’s right… the numbers are back for those who preferred to use them. We offer no numbers in one of our PDFs, as well, for those who prefer numberless #UDL Guidelines. #UDLchat
A1 #UDLchat It appears the order has changed and there is even more focus on learner variability. The connections seem to have a more understandable flow. #UDL
I love the clarity now about the horizontal alignment of the guidelines now-how to we provide access to learning, build skills, and internalize learning through empowering Ss #UDLChat
A1: I always went rogue (imagine that!) and used the numbered Guidelines because I find that it's easier for learners to find them in PD with the numbers. So glad to have you back, old friends! (#checkpointsorbust) #udlchat
A1: Digging deeper into the principles, guidelines, and checkpoints is much easier with this web version. Also, I love that you can save and print different versions of the graphic organizer including translated and past versions. #UDLchat
A1: I notice and LOVE that the explicit labels have been added to the horizontal rows-Access, Build, & Internalize!! Here’s a pic of some other things I noticed from my #UDL Tips & Tidbits board #udlchat
A1. Love the horizontal organization easier to explain the purpose to colleagues. Easier to share the vision of what we want our students to aspire to be. #udlchat
Q2: The goals of framework—growing expert learners—are much more explicit in the latest version of the guidelines. How do you communicate those goals to your learners? #udlchat
Q2: The goals of framework—growing expert learners—are much more explicit in the latest version of the guidelines. How do you communicate those goals to your learners? #udlchat
It’s so much more user friendly & less likely that you’ll fall into a black hole of tabs across your screen! So much more inviting & less intimidating to show those new to #UDL#Udlchat
A1: Changes from version 2.1 to 2.2 - access, build, internalize portions for each section, color and brains still included, options for checkpoint numbers or not, and hyperlinks to each checkpoint and the research (but can there be visuals and not just text there?!). #udlchat
A2: The fact that it's explicit that the purpose of teaching is student learning is absolutely critical. As Dewey said way back in the day, "One might as well say he has sold when no one has bought, as to say that he has taught when no one has learned." #udlchat
A2: Be transparent wth your Ss & get to know what excites them to help #engage them in learning about whatever they WANT to learn abt in and out of school. #udlchat
A2 We share "I can" statements with students at the beginning of lessons and units of study, make explicit math and science practices for students #UDLChat
Q2: The goals of framework—growing expert learners—are much more explicit in the latest version of the guidelines. How do you communicate those goals to your learners? #udlchat
A2: Honeslty it’s much easier to communicate because they are so clearly defined- the chart does the work for you! You just need to be a guide:) #UDLchat
A2: The expert learner goals/statements being explicitly stated is so important. I think it’s important to both know expert learners is the goal and then unpack what that really means related to each principle. #udlchat
A2: I'm currently work in an elementary school so we talk a lot about "driving the bus of your learning." But my battle cry is teaching kids YOUNG what it means to be purposeful, motivated, knowledgeable, resourceful, strategic, and to set goals! #UDLchat
A2 #UDLChat working on common K-12 Habits of Learning, content standards, and scoring criteria to share with Ss and parents, to inform grading and assessments
Q2: The goals of framework—growing expert learners—are much more explicit in the latest version of the guidelines. How do you communicate those goals to your learners? #udlchat
Q2) We are really working on making learning goals and objectives available to learners. Some staff are working on using rubrics with students to guide learning not only as a summative tool. We still have work ahead of us. #UDLchat
#udlchat hi my name is Maitha, I am working an instructional coach in Saint Louis. I look to UDL principles that can help our teachers to provide individual instruction with focusing on learning.
#UDLchat I love that this version focuses more on practice that b theory. I'm a theory geek, but my teachers want to dig in more by using weblinks. 👩🏫
A2: As you move towards the goal of expert learners, it's the learners who are driving — they're "independent, self-directed, self-actualizing learners.” h/t @DavidRose_CAST#UDLchat
Great question, Kimberly! We added the numbers back because some people missed them. But we also realize that some people don’t want them. So we tried to offer (wait for it…) multiple representations! #UDLchat
A2: In my higher ed classes, I've started to share the rationale as to why and how I set activities up in the course. Plus, I share how this impacts my expectations of them and hopefully of themselves. .#udlchat
A3: @CAST_UDL, I love the new organization and the additional info when you click on the checkpoints, but I’m curious why you didn’t change the language of the checkpoints to make them more teacher-friendly? #udlchat
Q2: The goals of framework—growing expert learners—are much more explicit in the latest version of the guidelines. How do you communicate those goals to your learners? #udlchat
A2 the clarity of expert learners as the goal re-empowers teachers to do what they've always wanted to do- prepare students to own their learning and their lives! #udlchat
A2: Framing what expertise looks like in different environments is key. UDL reminds us it won't look just one way. Co-constructing the meaning of expert learning with students will make the goal of expert learning more attainable for both the learner and the teacher. #UDLchat
A2: Growing expert learners is something I do share in conversations and PD. But now that they are listed in the new graphic organizer, I feel like the connections will be more clear and we can talk about/illustrate what it looks like and design those opportunities. #udlchat
Q2: The goals of framework—growing expert learners—are much more explicit in the latest version of the guidelines. How do you communicate those goals to your learners? #udlchat
#udlchat I want to start emphasizing guidelines more with students that emphasize the process goals/skills that are involved in any learning situation(self reg., collaboration, giving/receiving feedback).
Great question, Jennifer! We are certainly thinking about how to update the descriptive language around the Guidelines in future versions. That might even be v 3.0… They’re a living, breathing tool, so we expect constant change and improvement. #UDLchat

Not just choices - I try to set out the standards/essential questions and then students choose from my curated offerings how they will answer those questions - at least on my teaching perfectly days! #udlchat
I’m actually getting ready to introduce UDL and the new version of the guidlelimes to T’s tomorrow using @AllisonAposey Salsa lesson...first time doing the Salsa (dip not dance 😂) lesson - words of wisdom for those who have done or experienced? #UDLchat
They did. Because engagement was on the right side of the graphic organizer when we first released the Guidelines, they start with 7. Now that engagement is on the left, the Guidelines start with 7, not 1. We’re thinking about how to help with that translation. #UDLchat
I’ve seen some pretty awesome formats where the checkpoints are framed more like questions. Ex.) How have you minimized threats & distractions? It is a good starter version for Ts who can use the Qs to evaluate their current lessons. #udlchat

I do hear teachers say that they find the language dense, and when they see videos focusing on variability and practical strategies that are connected to each checkpoint...the info is more digestible. #udlchat

Great question! We tend to find the best resources, videos, and models right here in #UDLchat. You all in the field are the best resources for what #UDL implementation can be. #UDLchat
No Learning can happen without engagement—reflecting on this idea all the time has made me dig even deeper into how I get engagement as I am working with a group of adults. #udlchat

I love the the checkpoint Key Questions! Using these in a planning session/conversation is such an invitational way to get Ts thinking through a #UDL lens! I’ll have to update the doc to reflect the 2018 updates! #UDLChat
One of my favorite resources that I always point my teachers to is @goalbookapp's strategy toolkit: https://t.co/KzgxTSzb8k. Practical and connected to the checkpoints! Only thing is...these are in PDF worksheet format. Not ideal if you need to see tech examples, videos. #udlchat
There's a couple of languages we can add to the mix. Also, def want to see more examples on the website (video, strategies) that are culturally responsive! #udlchat
Love that Twitter is a place to learn and share - a place where I can expand my PLN, connect with those I know already, and lurk to get some great ideas! Thanks, #ATchat#udlchat#edtechchat@InclusiveLN@iste@masscue and hundreds of you all!
Any others you'd add? Always looking for practical strategies that are nicely curated! With UDL, we have to be curators and not dumpers https://t.co/8nK2EDCrKn#udlchat
