#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Hi everyone! So excited to welcome guest host author @kennethcdavis tonight to #worldgeochat If you haven't checked out More Deadly Than War get it ASAP! You and your students will love it!
Good evening #worldgeochat I am Kenneth C. Davis, hosting. You know the drill: who are u? where u from? what do u teach? Don’t know me? go here: https://t.co/llsapdTvpq We're talking about #WWI @#Spanishflu100-the most deadly #pandemic in modern times. Flu masks not required.
Chris from Illinois! One of the many #worldgeochat moderators. 7th grade global studies! Looking forward to tonight and meeting you at #NCSS18 in Chicago next month!

Another two maybe three screen night with #worldgeochat, work, and other work. Certain #worldgeochat will win the next hour. High school social studies Austin
It should Here’s a quick overview. 100 years ago, while #WWI was in its last days, the world was hit by the most deadly pandemic in modern times -675,000 Americans died of flu and complications in about a year. As many as 100 m around the world. #worldgeochat
Hi! I'm Anna Mills from MA. I teach 6th grade World Geography and my students are figuratively dying to know more about the Spanish flu since I showed them Hans Roslings' 200 countries, 200 years, in 4 mins: https://t.co/pI0RSI01fp
Can't wait for the #worldgeochat!

Hi Jody- More DeadlyThan War starts in Alaska in fact. The village of Brevig where more than 70 villagers died in days. Part of the story I tell in More Deadly Than War…far from Europe’s trenches #worldgeochat

Yes-As a neutral county they didn’t censor news- first wire service report of the epidemic came out of Madrid-hence the Spanish Flu though it had many other names around the world #worldgeochat
The #flu and #WWI were inseparable. Early cases were in US army bases, crowded conditions, soldiers than got on trains and troop transports and 1 million doughboys took the virus to France #worldgeochat. This is a geography story!
A1:I haven't taught yet, but when I was in high school learning about WW1 we never learned about the flu pandemic. We barely focused on WW1 #worldgeochat
A1 We used to cover WW1, and yes it was a component of our lessons. Students were always shocked that it killed more people than WW1 combat. Now I tie it in with how globalization can be both a positive and a negative with pandemics. #worldgeochat
A1
Not as much as I used to. Our main focus in the past was looking at the causes of WWI and the effects (Treaty of Versailles). I talked about trench warfare, but didn't go into great depth about it.
#worldgeochat
A1 used to when I had a section of US history and we mentioned (too) briefly. Got a zombie apocalypse unit for geography with lots of tracking movement and spread which I think it would fit pretty well with #worldgeochat
A1: I don't actually get to teach about WWI- I have not found a way to make it fit. However I did just get a fabulous article about WWI from my Junior @Scholastic subscription. I only talk about the flu when we do my Econ unit with the Hans Rosling video. #worldgeochat

Of course the war began in August 1914 and I give background on it in #MoreDeadlyThan War. But when US troops want by millions in spring 1918, they spread the virus to Europe. #worldgeochat
Sadly, WWI is easy to forget for us. The US became isolationist after, there is no national monument to its veterans (though the citizens of DC built a small one off the Mall). There's so much to it, but so easy to ignore. #worldgeochat
The flu spread because of the war- troops moving, supply ships. the wort his cities in SU were ports -Boston, Philadelphia, New York, San Fran with military bases nearby. #worldgeochat
A1 WWI lessons mostly focus on evaluating Wilson, Treaty of Versailles, self-determination and state boundaries, build up to future tensions. #worldgeochat
This is kind of off-topic here, but our article on France’s Zone Rouge is a good geography story about WWI; the zone is a region surrounding Verdun that still has live ordnance, no inhabitants, and few visitors. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/nK0s8HOLlH

I write about h9w Pres Wilson had the flu in paris while negotiating. Berg discusses how he was physically different after the flu. Could it have affected his judgment, decisions? Big What if?#worldgeochat
A2: When I do my population unit I love talking about Spanish flu, black plague, etc. Then we play a pandemic simulation. Great segway into a conversation about how we are so NOT ready for a global pandemic #worldgeochat
Unfortunately, disease is timeless. We discuss The Black Death, The Spanish Flu, and then more recent outbreaks like Swine Flu and Ebola. We also discuss malaria too. #worldgeochat
A2
I spend far too much time trying to explain to students how an Ebola outbreak in DRC does not constitute an epidemic impacting all of Africa. Its the danger of a single story. #worldgeochat
A2: Yes: I have connected diseases and geography in 6th grade and yes back when I taught World History I and World History II I did all three. Most recently was the spread of Ebola a few years ago, Swine Flu prior to that and SARS before that. #worldgeochat
The appendix of #MoreDeadlyThan War has a history f medicine- from Greek miasma to John Snow;s pump and aspirin —which people feared in Spanish flu because it was German #worldgeochat

A2: When looking at the connection between geography and disease, a common topic seems to be the Black Plague. I think it would be nice to work in the flu pandemic which would hit a little closer to home for students. #worldgeochat

Especially when they hear that a 16 year old named Walt Disney almost died when he tried to join the Red Cross Ambulance Service #worldgeochat A story I tell in the book
A2: When looking at the connection between geography and disease, a common topic seems to be the Black Plague. I think it would be nice to work in the flu pandemic which would hit a little closer to home for students. #worldgeochat
A3: This would seem to be large numbers of people in close proximity like military bases, port cities and at parades and factories. With an influx of movement of people due to WW1. I hope I'm on the right track. #worldgeochat
The story of the flu spread has a lot to do with port cities —troop transports and supply ships moving around the globe were major factors in spread. Deepwater ports were very hard hit -esp. in Africa and India which lost 18-20M people. #worldgeochat
A3
Not having finished, I wonder if our transportation systems helped spread the disease. We were linked by rivers, seas, and railroads - makes it easy to pass. #worldgeochat
Thank you! I just skimmed this and it's really interesting to know that gas bombs are a. more dangerous than regular bombs and b. they still exist! #worldgeochat
A3: I am slightly embarrassed to say I honestly am not 100% sure. We only barely touched on the flu at all when I was in school and when we did sadly geography wasn't the focus. #worldgeochat
A3: I have not studied this very much at all but this really fits with the Geo theme of Movement. I am looking for more details from my #worldgeochat peeps. Thank you!
Exactly lots of people on the move on crowded boats and trains, Of course, war meant shortage of food medicine and medical personnel. In America, flu followed the train lines and hit ports with military bases nearby- Seattle, Chicago --where Walt Disney got sick #worldgeochat

Exactly! I showed my students that Liberia to Miami isn't much further than Liberia to Cape Town. But it doesn't help when media outlets focus on Ebola as a major story when it AIDS and Malaria kill far more each day! #worldgeochat
I got it on TPT a couple of years ago. I left my hard drive at school but I can share tomorrow. It basically involves eqach person being a country and different colored m&ms as their citizens. People get infected very quickly. The kids freak. I love it.
They don't get ... don't want to get that Africa is a continent with issues of its own. Let's make it easy on viewers / readers and not give context? #worldgeochat
At one point, a hundred men were dying every day at Great lakes- world’s largest navy base at the time. #worldgeochat. Quickly went from there to Chicago and then by rail across the country as Chicago was train hub of America
A4 Propaganda rallies and parades led by major stars like Fairbanks, Pickford and Chaplin, drew huge crowds that facilitated easy transmission of the virus. #worldgeochat
Funny you mention that! I don't think I've ever seen it on any of the @wttw shows with Geoffrey Baer. This is a fascinating piece of local history! #worldgeochat
A4 Wasn't coverage of this pandemic in countries affected really restricted. Wasn't the coverage that was allowed blamed on enemy nations? #worldgeochat
A4: Propaganda for #WWI was essential in getting support for the war on all sides. I enjoyed teaching propaganda lessons in World History. I have no idea about how it was used with #Spanishflu. #worldgeochat
I'm a life long Chicagoan Ken and was fascinated by this. I had not once read or heard about this prior to reading your book. Was Great Lakes then the primary Navy boot camp like today or did it serve a different purpose then? #worldgeochat

Very true. But in the first days of the #flu, it was blamed on the Germans- They had poisoned the water, Bayer had poisoned the aspirin, spared set out germs in theaters. This was widely published. #worldgeochat Part of the wider use of propaganda against the Huns” 1918 fake news

Definitely, you hear about the use of Lake Michigan and its converted ships to aircraft carriers for training carrier pilots during WW2 https://t.co/wniwUiPsgo yet nothing on the Spanish Flu. #worldgeochat

That's another thing too. I've talked to my Ss about how people who perpetuate a single story (stereotype) are either ignorant, or see some benefit in continuing it. I don't think the media is ignorant so... #worldgeochat
Another human story- a survivor of the flu was a young Asst Secretary of Navy taken to his mother's home by ambulance. Franklin D Roosevelt nearly died. #worldgeochat
Also, check out Kevin Brownlow’s magnificent documentary on Hollywood’s role in the war effort, Hollywood Goes to War. https://t.co/EuQYrPOljT#worldgeochat

In France talking weather to some Americans. I mentioned the warm ocean breeze off Portugal. Dude wearing NFL shirt:"South America is really warm."
I didn't know if I should (1) focus on weather in S. Am, (2) alert him to where Portugal is located, or (3) walk away. #worldgeochat
It's a lot easier to report on tragedy than success. If we look at data and see African nations getting healthier and wealthier, there isn't a story there. #worldgeochat
I absolutely believe that the trauma of war combined with the trauma of #flu provoked America’;s isolationism and fear -anti-immigrant laws in 1920s, rise of KKK, fear Bolshevism all tied together. #worldgeochat
A5: The War (and possible the flu but I haven't read your book yet- so I'm guessing) caused the US to isolate itself, to resist being drawn in to dangerous alliances. It makes sense that if a deadly disease is spreading, they would put themselves in quarantine. #worldgeochat
It's been a long time since I read an FDR biography. Did his bout with the flu impact his immune system to the point where polio devastated him? #worldgeochat
All correct. On the other hand- women had been placed in the world in ways that would not change- factory jobs & especially nursing opened up to them; they weren’t going back, One reason suffrage passed #worldgeochat

Thanks Kenneth! It's one of the things I've never really understood from our country's history. And it's a path I fear we are on again... #worldgeochat
Ken also argues that the fact that Wilson contracted the flu during the Versailles peace conference, may have led to a more punitive treaty, and to a Wilson being less able to secure ratification on his return. #worldgeochat

Haven’t read it. But I do recommend Katherine A Porter’s story Pale Horse, Pale Rider -one of the only pieces of fiction to depict the flu and very accurately. She also was a survivor. Curiously, little art came out of flu-it was too terrible. #worldgeochat
That has been suggested. Another historical tidbit- It was during convalescence that Eleanor found FDR’s love letters when she unpack his suitcases. #worldgeochat Another story.

How can Maryland be full of such seemingly reasonable people?!?! My sister, who lives in Maryland, would remind me of their western portion that tried to secede when they legalized marriage equality a few years ago.
#worldgeochat
Thank you so much for hosting tonight @kennethcdavis This was incredible. I learned so much! What topic are you addressing in your next book? #worldgeochat
None taken. There seems to be little in the way of economics though. Not sure how they'd support themselves. #worldgeochat Interesting idea... Secede and become part of WVA?
