We'll be using the typical Q & A format! Join the conversation! First question in 2 min! Don't forget to include all answers with #CreateEdu
  • AdobeEdu - Moderator Jan 17 @ 7:05 PM EST
Q1: Using a scale from 1-10, what do you think is the average impact technology has on achievement and why? Extra credit if you use John Hattie's size scale. #CreateEdu
  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:05 PM EST
A0 Hello and welcome! My name is @SonnyMagana. I’m a teacher, researcher, and author. I developed the #T3Framework for #Innovation. #createedu
  • spirrison - Moderator Jan 17 @ 7:08 PM EST
A1: I think we are at a 4, personally. There is a lot of investment and attention towards technology investments. However, my fear is that not enough consideration is made to how to use the tools to truly transcend. #createedu
  • cinehead Jan 17 @ 7:10 PM EST
A1 #CreateEdu Impact of #edtech depends on access & school culture. If both are 100%, then impact can be huge.

  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:10 PM EST
    A1: This is a loaded question—by design! #createedu
  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:11 PM EST
Hello and welcome, Michael! Given the variables you mentioned, what do you think is the average impact of #edtech on #achievement? #createedu
    In reply to @cinehead
  • AdobeEdu - Moderator Jan 17 @ 7:12 PM EST
Q2: What are some of the reasons why you think the average impact of technology on achievement is at that level? #CreateEdu
  • cinehead Jan 17 @ 7:12 PM EST
A1 #CreateEdu What are your metrics for student achievement? If its the ability to take multiple choice tests, then #edtech has low impact. If your metric is to transform learning with #PBL, authentic authoring and student voice, then impact is high. #edchat #medialiteracy

  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:14 PM EST
Okay, so low on standardized measures of achievement, but high when students authentically express their learning. Got it. Thanks! #createedu

Love this answer, Michael. So true. We cannot use the old metrics to evaluate new things. #CreateEdu

  • aiaddysonzhang Jan 17 @ 7:15 PM EST
Hello everyone. Sorry I am late! Love this topic. it is something so close to my heart. #CreateEdu
  • cinehead Jan 17 @ 7:15 PM EST
A2 #CreateEdu Most educators lack training, time and resources to integrate #edtech, or more often, are evaluated based on student test scores and traditional learning methods. That inhibits #innovation. #edchat #edtechchat
  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:15 PM EST
Using a scale from 1-10, the preponderance of research evidence compiled by @john_hattie shows the average impact of technology on student achievement is a measly 3. And this hasn’t changed in over 50 years. #createedu
  • aiaddysonzhang Jan 17 @ 7:17 PM EST
A1. - I teach social media & personal branding classes. In my classes, the impact is at least 8 - It's a myth to assume that our students, digital "natives", know how to use tech. they have to be trained and taught like all of us - i can see big changes over time #CreateEdu

Not an expert on this study or metrics. But I've always felt it was important to put learning objectives first, then find the right tool for the job. #CreateEdu

Amen! Cannot agree more with you! Changes in the classroom cannot happen without leadership buy-in & support Teachers are already bombarded with so many things #CreateEdu
    In reply to @cinehead
  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:18 PM EST
Granted there are numerous challenges with achievement tests: bias, error, validity, reliability. However, would you agree that we need some consistent measure of student achievement in order to gain some idea of impact? #createedu
    In reply to @aiaddysonzhang, @cinehead
  • AdobeEdu - Moderator Jan 17 @ 7:19 PM EST
Q3: What digital tools do you and your students use to help represent learning and express thinking? #CreateEdu
  • aiaddysonzhang Jan 17 @ 7:19 PM EST
A2. - No incentives to learn new things & grow - Lack of leadership support in terms of training, resources, & recognition - tech changes all the time. it is HARD work to learn how to integrate it well into teaching #CreateEdu
  • teacherslens Jan 17 @ 7:19 PM EST
a1: 1-10 this depends on a wide array of factors in a learning system - peer relations and collaborative goal structures, agency of learner, understanding of tool and constructivism (or Papert constructionism), culture, distributed learning, authentic audience, etc… #CreateEdu
    In reply to @AdobeEdu
  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:20 PM EST
YES!!! I completely agree with you on the myth of the #digitalnative. The research evidence simply doesn’t support that characterization. When left to their own devices, student use of #edtech is banal and trivial. #createedu
    In reply to @aiaddysonzhang
  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:21 PM EST
YES!!! That is one of many significant impediments to high impact use of #edtech. Stated another way, the variables you describe add to the #epidemic of #lowimpact #edtech use! #createedu

  • aiaddysonzhang Jan 17 @ 7:21 PM EST
A3 - i am an advocate of using what we have & go deeper - My favorite is @AdobeSpark that my students use to create articles, blogs, videos, graphics, etc - i also use Facebook Group to build communities & have discussions - And livestreaming to break class walls #CreateEdu
  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:22 PM EST
YES!!!! We must always begin with clear learning intentions and success criteria. Make the intentions clear and student creativity will help them navigate a path towards mastery! That is a fundamental principle! #createedu

  • aiaddysonzhang Jan 17 @ 7:23 PM EST
Amen, Sonny! I hear that from my students every single day! For example, many of my students have never @AdobeSpark before i tell them in fall 18, i still have several students who have never heard of LinkedIn #CreateEdu

  • teacherslens Jan 17 @ 7:23 PM EST
a2: understanding of multimodality in literacy development, the long goals of product/project learning that accounts for a broader cognitive architecture, designing for distributed teaching/learning spaces, leveraging of “tool” in extending the reach of learners (ZPD) #createEdu

  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:23 PM EST
In fact, there is 0.0 evidence underpinning the #DigitalNative myth. It is opinion, and, according to @john_hattie, is basically incorrect. #TeachersMatter! #createedu

A3 #CreateEdu In my high school Media Arts classes, we use @googledocs for writing and collaborating, Final Cut Pro and iMovie to edit video stories, Wordpress to publish text, and @instagram and @twitter to share socially #FCPX #edchat #medialiteracy
  • aiaddysonzhang Jan 17 @ 7:24 PM EST
Agree! I also think that we need to move away from measuring students' ability to remember information and facts...but focus more on measuring characters, critical thinking, creativity, etc #CreateEdu

  • cinehead Jan 17 @ 7:25 PM EST
A3 #CreateEdu For social media posts, my students love using @AdobeSpark Check out @miracostanews on Twitter and @mustangmorningnews on @instagram for examples. #edtechchat #medialiteracy #design
  • aiaddysonzhang Jan 17 @ 7:25 PM EST
Yes. I LOVE using platforms that allow students to share their work publicly. it helps see the impact of their work speaking of google doc, last year, i had a few students who had never used google doc before... #CreateEdu

yeah, and I think it also important to realize Hattie’s megastudy is based on historical data, meaning reports on what has happened up until now with little accounting for “New Liberal Arts Technologies” (aka #DesignThinking) accounting for constant change #createEdu

  • sonnymagana Jan 17 @ 7:26 PM EST
All great #edtech tools. The key variable is not that #edtech tools are used, but HOW #edtech tools are used, and by whom! With proper guidance and scaffolding, student creativity flourishes as does their achievement! #createedu
    In reply to @aiaddysonzhang, @AdobeSpark
  • aiaddysonzhang Jan 17 @ 7:27 PM EST
And follow YOU, Michael! My students absolutely love @AdobeSpark. i took quite a few screenshots of my students expressing their excitement for this amazing tool. haha #CreateEdu

A4. I’d look for new opportunities and what has been done already that’s worked and then some new opportunities. Biggest thing to give students is to empower them w/ real world experiences that allow them to showcase their creativity and stories. #CreateEDU

Hello and welcome, Chris! Thank you for your contribution to this chat! You are correct that there are many variables, and indeed a variance in impact, but the average impact of #edtech on #achievement is a 3 out of 10. #createedu
