Our topic for #asechat this evening is British Science Week (@ScienceWeekUK) This runs from 9-18 March 2018 and is organised by @BritSciAssoc
  • TFScientist Feb 26 @ 3:00 PM EST
And we're off! Don't forget to use the #asechat hashtag
  • TFScientist Feb 26 @ 3:01 PM EST
Q1: How do you promote British Science Week in your school? #asechat
  • CazGerrard Feb 26 @ 3:03 PM EST
Last year we did a different experiment every day either up in the labs or out in the quad - went down a storm with the students #asechat
    In reply to @TFScientist
  • TFScientist Feb 26 @ 3:03 PM EST
#asechat At my current school, for example, Science Week hasn't been mentioned for the two years I have been there! :( Very difficult to fit into our tight curriculum time
  • TeacherChemist Feb 26 @ 3:04 PM EST
Post a Pringle with Year 7, Balloon Buggy challenge with Year 8, Visiting demonstration lecture for other years etc... #asechat
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Feb 26 @ 3:04 PM EST
This is an #asechat for everyone Science week starts 9th March https://t.co/YRn8hKsEKj How is your primary school joining in?
  • TFScientist Feb 26 @ 3:05 PM EST
A new Experiment every day - like advent but with thermite! What suggestions do people have for promoting British science week (@ScienceWeekUK) #asechat
    • CazGerrard Feb 26 @ 3:03 PM EST

  • BritSciAssoc Feb 26 @ 3:06 PM EST
That's a shame :( we hope resources like the activity packs (on the BSW website) can help make things easier - or things like https://t.co/vDEqmcbpfB which you can incorporate into other subjects, like P.E! #asechat
    In reply to @TFScientist
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Feb 26 @ 3:06 PM EST
Lots of support on the web site https://t.co/YRn8hKsEKj this years theme is exploration and discovery and there are resources linked #asechat
  • TeacherChemist Feb 26 @ 3:06 PM EST
This year we have booked Andrew Szydlo again. He always gets things off with a bang! #asechat
  • oboelizzy Feb 26 @ 3:06 PM EST
    #primary rocks #asechat
  • cleverfiend Feb 26 @ 3:07 PM EST
I fell out with Science week when I was turned down for funding for the first time in years of applying. Every week was science week in my lab so no loss to the students! (controversial!๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€) #ASEchat
    In reply to @TFScientist
  • TFScientist Feb 26 @ 3:07 PM EST
@TeacherChemist And what is a balloon buggy!? #asechat
  • oboelizzy Feb 26 @ 3:07 PM EST
#primaryrocks #asechat - see if I can get the hashtags right this time!
  • TeacherChemist Feb 26 @ 3:07 PM EST
And for the first time this year we are going to try and get all year 9s a Bronze Crest Award during Science Week #asechat
  • TeacherChemist Feb 26 @ 3:08 PM EST
Build a buggy powered by a single balloon and race them off at the end of the week...great fun #asechat
    In reply to @TFScientist
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Feb 26 @ 3:08 PM EST
Maybe it was time to give another school a chance? ;) #asechat Thats a great proposition though "every week is science weekโ€™ could catch on

What a shame. Teachers tell us they have their enrichment day during science week so they can use our STEM challenges and pupils can gain a Discovery @CRESTAwards
      In reply to @TFScientist, @CRESTAwards
  • TFScientist Feb 26 @ 3:09 PM EST
@BritishScienceWeek The resources look excellent. I am looking to run a few with my Year 8s, but not enough curriculum time for GCSE I don't think Don't think we are important enough for the assembly rota either! #asechat
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Feb 26 @ 3:09 PM EST
Outrageous, make sure you claim slot early next year science week #assembly #asechat

    In reply to @Glazgow
  • cleverfiend Feb 26 @ 3:11 PM EST
I really wanted to do something with parents but was quite hard to get them into school for any reason - especially having a PAN of 70 meant not many parents to choose from! How many schools get parents involved? #ASEchat
    In reply to @NeedhamL56
  • Glazgow Feb 26 @ 3:12 PM EST
Balloon buggies look very cool - are they easy enough to make? Are there instructions or is a complete design & build project? #asechat

  • PA_Schools Feb 26 @ 3:12 PM EST
There are grants available from @BritSciAssoc for certain schools doing @CRESTAwards which you could do during science week. Also worth trying @royalsociety #asechat
    In reply to @NeedhamL56, @BritSciAssoc, @CRESTAwards, @royalsociety
  • TFScientist Feb 26 @ 3:12 PM EST
Unfortunately not @MaryUYSEG, Assembly topics are handed down by SLT and are of vital importance to the PSHE programme #asechat
  • TeacherChemist Feb 26 @ 3:13 PM EST
Part of the skill is designing the buggy, but we made some ourselves before Science Week so they had some idea of design #asechat

This is spot on - the stereotype of science can often be "big explosions", whereas it's a lot about creativity, trial & error, philosophy, problem-solving etc. too. A good activity can be: kids put a Q in a hat, pick one, & then solve it as a group however they wish #asechat
