At my current school, for example, Science Week hasn't been mentioned for the two years I have been there! :( Very difficult to fit into our tight curriculum time
A new Experiment every day - like advent but with thermite!
What suggestions do people have for promoting British science week (@ScienceWeekUK)
#asechat
That's a shame :( we hope resources like the activity packs (on the BSW website) can help make things easier - or things like https://t.co/vDEqmcbpfB which you can incorporate into other subjects, like P.E! #asechat
I fell out with Science week when I was turned down for funding for the first time in years of applying. Every week was science week in my lab so no loss to the students! (controversial!๐๐) #ASEchat

What a shame. Teachers tell us they have their enrichment day during science week so they can use our STEM challenges and pupils can gain a Discovery @CRESTAwards
@BritishScienceWeek
The resources look excellent. I am looking to run a few with my Year 8s, but not enough curriculum time for GCSE I don't think
Don't think we are important enough for the assembly rota either! #asechat

We're doing a STEM fortnight this year with a big evening showcase event for families towards the end. We've got lots of visitors & parents coming in to speak about their jobs + lots of different activities for every stage to do #asechat

I really wanted to do something with parents but was quite hard to get them into school for any reason - especially having a PAN of 70 meant not many parents to choose from! How many schools get parents involved? #ASEchat
We've had a real focus on engeging parents this year and developing #sciencecapital of our families - we've got a database of 50 parnts with STEM jobs who are willing to come in during the year and talk to classes or do workshops. #asechat
I'd like to organise a competition between our feeder primary schools ... maybe water rockets ... bring everyone together for some science fun :) #asechat
It was SO hard to choose - but on the plus side, amazing that so many people applied. It shows how much demand there is for science enrichment! #asechat
Anyone doing any special things just for the sci teachers for sci week? Often feel teachers get left out so much - would help enthusiasm and retention perhaps? #asechat

Friday 19th March, I am hosting a live twitter Q and A on Epigenetics aimed at A level Biologist with some world experts ready to answer and explain beyond the syllabus #asechat

Sorted by age groups there's something for everyone - and good for year round #STEM clubs too https://t.co/ObfhFpn107

Ooooh, is that based on our wind power challenge or our power for the world? If not then lease donโt take a look... They put a wind turbine challenge in a global context #ASEChat
If (like me) you have a habit of leaving things too late, you could always use some of the great @ScienceWeekUK resources for STEM clubs or end of year celebration investigations

Q2: What advice would you give people running activities for the first time for British Science Week?
Q2b: Do you use the resources available at https://t.co/W0so5rwMCK ?
#asechat
Plan your activities ahead of time, check there are no clashes with school calendar and if you are trying something new, try it out ahead of time #obvious#asechat
If you are not doing anything else you could get children to enter the poster competition https://t.co/sC6IEBe5Yr by 6th April up to age14 5 entries per school #asechat

Do sci week activities have to be practical? so much of what we know today about our world came about because of creative thought -sometimes long after empirical observations-
just wondering #asechat
We have also got science shows from @gsc1 , a mobile planetarium visiting, meteorites from @RoyalObs , VR experience, microscopy workshops, IR camera and each class will do a whole day technology project and a sport science activity!
#asechat
A call for more thought and (slightly) less action for @ScienceWeekUK
What sort of creative activities can you think of that do not require practical equipment or fancy demonstrations?
Perhaps reading groundbreaking research papers...maybe in character? #asechat

in fact all you people lets have some science week photos on twitter to inspire us #asechat ters for s different week (every week is science week) LOL!

I have arranged for all the PGCE science specialist trainees at Warwick -EY/primary /secondary- to support a local partner primary school run a science fair. Trainees will be delivering workshops to all classes. Parents are being invited to shadow their children.
Advice: Speak to/partner with local organisations who can provide assistance or wise words and if struggling for space in the curriculum, then try to fit into existing activities (science is everywhere, after all!) #asechat
#asechat is discussing @ScienceWeekUK this evening.
Loads of great resources for all stages are available https://t.co/W0so5rfbLc
We are on Q2: What advice do you have for people running National Science Week for the first time?
SLT have been brilliant in supporting us, we have a team of 4 of us working on it so workload is shared around. Hopefully teachers will get right behind it when it all kicks off #ASEchat
How about looking at scientists whose inventions changed our world? We have a great free 3m long poster of inventions in the last 100 years linked to a creative design challenge https://t.co/WhUHdboJK9 just email schools@practicalaction.org.uk to get one #ASEChat
We're actually only having to pay for 2 or the activities, the rest are very generous contacts I have built up over many years and a few favours I have called in from people I have done work for in the past.Lots of large companies have volunteering schemes too #ASEchat
We do this too...very good for pupils to practise their scientific language skills and communication in preparation for University interviews too. #asechat

Incidentally, I'm sat watching this programme (The incredible science of temperature) on BBC4 as I multitask - record a copy off the TV to use in your teaching - it's pretty good #ASEChathttps://t.co/datMzob8sJ
The things we have had to pay for have been funded by our generous PTA and from a ring-fenced science budget which is mostly supply cover expenses from the PSTT #ASEchat

This is spot on - the stereotype of science can often be "big explosions", whereas it's a lot about creativity, trial & error, philosophy, problem-solving etc. too. A good activity can be: kids put a Q in a hat, pick one, & then solve it as a group however they wish #asechat
I am going with the (slightly) cynical - people who have never taught a lesson.
It is based on central gov funding. Top ups for certain deprivation measures. The nicer the demographic (and often geography) of your school, the less funding
#asechat

Q3a: Have you faced any challenges in running/organising/delivering British Science Week
Q3b: What have been the biggest successes you have had?

Networking is so important - once people know you are a teacher pushing the STEM agenda they are often more than happy to help out in any way they can. Helps if you can do something in return, bit of publicity, some CPD, writing etc but people are very generous #asechat

Absolutely agree with this - discovering far too late in my professional career how extremely important networking is! - it benefits everybody in some way - and the best way to network is to come to #aseconf !!! #asechat

Quite like the @CRESTAwards - Children come up with all sorts of amazing questions to explore. Real examples inc: "Is homework really necessary?" "What biscuit dunks the best?" "Which colour of nail polish dries the quickest?" "Does chewing gum help you concentrate?" #asechat

First thing to remember when networking though is "what can I do for my network?" the other way around is the cynical stuff that people dislike. Conferences, Learned societies, meetings, twitter, TeachMeets #asechat
Any advice for enthusiastic science teachers who are not in a position to make budgetary suggestions?
Particularly where existing dept is not all that into non-curriculum based frivolity...
#asechat
Sorry - just getting back to this. I think it's more than that. I think it's an unconscious bias that sets in quite early about boys preferring science/tech subjects as they can learn, and regurgitate, lots of facts - this leads to girls thinking it's not for them #ASEchat

Girls rarely choose subjects because they like them, they choose because it is going to lead to the career they want. If they get turned off STEM subjects early they often don't consider STEM careers and so don't choose those subjects later on. #ASEchat

Yes I think so - but as teachers we have to challenge the stereotype and positively discriminate in favour of girls when choosing pupils for science clubs and roles within school. #ASEchat

interesting comment - have you evidence for that? Have to say looking back at own choices as teenager they became what I thought I would get a career in not what I liked! didn't opt for my beloved music + oboe because I thought it would end up with me being a teacher!!!! #asechat

That's fascinating. As a teacher-in-training (and inquisitive individual), I am very interested in student motivations. Do you think the imbalance in genders might have something to do with tradition as well? #asechat

There's evidence in research from the IoP gender imbalance research and also the Aspires report - it's obviously a more complicated picture than that but there are definite trends showing that girls choose subjects as a means to an end #ASEchat

Q4: Why should we bother with events like @ScienceWeekUK - shouldn't exam preparation come first?

I can add that I choose my degree (History) because I liked my history prof. Not much of a practical motivation there, but my school was a classical school and didn't have a plethora of very practical degrees. Excellent education, though. #asechat
