Q1: What degree of Math loss do you notice in students when they return in Sept.?
Hi! Susan Mattingly-9th grade algebra 1
Math facts and stamina to stay working on a tough problem.
A1 Studies show that Ss lose between 1-3 months of math over the summer! So important to keep skills fresh
A1 Also so important to keep math fun or else Ss can burn out!
A1: usually the loss in 5ths is with specific rules for things like fractions and with math vocab - less this year though
Yes! That stamina is hard to build back up in Sept
A1: lol! Mine tell me they learned nothing the year before. Seems like they lose a good year so maybe they're correct.
Varies greatly based on indiv. ss + successes from the year before but there is always a need for refreshing skills
Keeping things fresh in their minds over summer. Planning on using TenMarks over summer.
Vocabulary loss is tough! Something for me to think about this summer heading into next year
A1: We use MAP as a screener and take it three times/year. Particularly in my struggling Ss, I notice a percentile loss of 4-8.
Mindset and remembering that mistakes are good and that's how we learn.
I agree...getting it back early will be helpful!
Q2: How can we get PARENTS on board to keep students learning over the summer?
A1: Truly saw less loss this year than previous b/c Ss had summer program - really helped
I anticipate an easier time this year thanks to
A2 Communication with parents is key. My Ss parents were eager to help over the summer but they needed guidance and ideas
Measures of Academic Progress. It's an adaptive, nationally normed assessment.
Planning on sending home a letter about using TenMarks at lest 3 times a weeks. Using SeeSaw to push out reminders to parent.
A2: Keep them in the loop. Send out newsletters and/or have a parent night to communicate the significance of the summer slide.
A2: By keeping communication open over the summer. I plan on using and email
I agree, the parents need ideas and support
Planning on using WithMathICan the first day of school in August. Really helped this year.
A2: Making them aware of all the fun, FREE options. , Prodigy, ReflexMath. Practicing facts = easier than ever!
My name is Kim, I am an instructional coach for Beaumont USD and an Amazon Educator Fellow.
yes end of year parent night! Not just back to school!
Letting ss know we are "watching" will be motivating to many of our kids!
A2 My Summer page has Weekends of Exploration & Entertainment for parents to do with children https://t.co/9BQVAER0dC
HEllo joining late, but was sitting down to read and saw the chat was on
Thanks. I will check it out
Q3: What sites/resources/incentives do you share with students over the summer?
we also use MAP for data and i saw loss after summer
Last day of school breakfast and math discussion with Ps and Ss to talk about math loss.
Q3 is posted https://t.co/9ZDtvkDzKS
Q3: What sites/resources/incentives do you share with students over the summer?
A3 Get the whole school on board in a contest - great way to incentivize summer work and hit the ground running next year
A3 Ts can continue to create TenMarks assignments for Ss until their archive date.
A3 Also a great way to build community over the summer
S who compete their assignments on TenMarks will get a movie after school in the fall.
A3: , , Reflex math as well as challenges I post on
It would be cool to have some kind of parent and student math day or night over the summer!
A3 Good idea to let parents know that TenMarks assignments and ways they can help their Ss during work (ie hints, videos etc)
A3: we are raffling tablets, baseball tickets and food gift cards. Ss earn a ticket for each week of TenMarks Summer done.
A3: Outings in the area to promote math. A museum and some serious baseball rivalry are great family math fun.
Good idea! I will also be putting a summer podcast out as well.
Use EOY of TenMarks assessment and see what skills will will need to be reinforced/reviewed.
Does anyone know if student Tenmarks accts remain active over the summer? Can we assign personal work?
A3 Also great resources on site! Help parents guide Ss to have when completing summer work
yes! Until your district's archive date students will have access to personalized work!
Q4: What partnerships can teachers form with community/companies to help curb summer loss?
Yes! That is so sad to me as well
We run a math camp for our Ss with some coding, experiments, engineering projects and games. No for loss Ss who participated.
Q4 has been posted https://t.co/rOzcivpSIY
Q4: What partnerships can teachers form with community/companies to help curb summer loss?
A5 Super important to work with Ts in grades below/above you to coordinate summer work and prepare Ss for the next year
WithMathICan resources are awesome. Really helps kids understand growth mindset. Made a big difference in my class this year.
love this school wide challenge!
first year trying it so hopefully it's a success
A4: We have done things in past with 7-11 and pizza places for incentives. Partnership with local library is key too
A4: Partner with a local library and promote math activities. Drop off copies of things kids can do during the summer months.
Run a math camp. Did that a few years ago and it helped with struggling Ss.
A4 I want to communicate more with business owners to share how Math is important to their job
great idea for a blog post ;)
Need to head out early for Thanks! Hope to see you all there! and Will we be continuing next week?
Partner with local library. Jo Boaler courses over summer.
Too bad we can't get in with local banks...
A4: I created WMIC signs for staff to share how they use math. Might be fun to distribute to local businesses.
Q5: What is one take away from tonight you may try to use this summer?
is every other week over the summer! I'll make sure to remind you! Have a great chat with
A5 will be looking for ways to provide more resources to Ps to help w/ summer learning
A5: Going to create a summer math challenge and leave it at the local libraries!
do you have a sample you can share?
Set up a class summer challenge in math for my S.
I like the idea of leaving it at the library
A5 as a 1st year T this was an area i didn't feel i had much to share on w/ Ps. Next year will be better
Then we all hung them outside our rooms to show students that ALL their Ts use math, both at school and outside.
