Thanks to Jo, I'm becoming a more effective educator in my 16th year.
Hi Rachael! gets international :)
Welcome! Great to have UK Math teachers as part of this Looking forward to your ideas!
Thanks Maureen! I'm excited to learn & take back info to our math teachers
live seeing you here Dave
You'll love it Rocheal, what level do you teach?
Kindly welcome {} to tonight on .
Feeling great, the maths revolution is really spreading :)
Please welcome Lisa {} to our on with
leaders like yourself r now helping to make maths more about thinking than computing; it's alive
Today we had Michael LaFosse teach fractions w/origami--very exciting maker math! lots of fun and colorful!
Q1 - In what ways do you encourage students' growth mindset with regard to math learning and teaching?
Yes can't forget that mathematical thinking and mindsets is at the center of all this.
Math can be fun, engaging and great learning experience with from ! https://t.co/GZ8ZLazn9f
leaders like yourself r now helping to make maths more about thinking than computing; it's alive
thank you all for welcome its pleasure to be involved Jo Boaler is inspirational
A1 - We're sharing with our Learners that learning math is an iterative process with collaborative questioning and fun!
A1 Everyday I say, "Everyone is capable of learning math!" I see Ss look up w/positivity when I say that :)
interesting - using YET frequently. kids actually wrote on pretest- "I don't know this yet"
Start by teaching students that math has a "why" to it in addition to a how and a what. It's a whole new side
Welcome Nat. Looking forward to your participation tonight on talk!
A1 - We encourage all Learners to Practice, Think, Collaborate and work through Challenges until the Learning happens! Yes!
Mary, pleased to see you in tonight on with
David, do you have an example of that--how you do that, I'd like to know.
The "why" is HUGE in Math! https://t.co/keweTaWl2r
Start by teaching students that math has a "why" to it in addition to a how and a what. It's a whole new side
can we get those Ss to start and try problems...then say I can't finish it yet
happy to be here! Saw Jo speak in IL last Oct.
A1. Never give up attitude. Ss are allowed to go back & redo problems. Explain why it wasn't right. Serve as resources to peers
Mary, I need to start adding that to our work and writing. Great idea!
Building in opportunity for "productive struggle" -giving Ss times to figure things out.
I don't have an issue w kids not finishing - let them partner to help that
Always tell my students it is not that you can't understand the math it is that you have not found a teacher who can explain right
Our Learners are writing about the math to explain the connections.
Helping my daughter (5th) understand how a variable helps me think about situations b4 showing her what one is
A1 We also have a lot of motivational signs up w/regard to learning math.
We call in "Strategic Confusion" in our class. https://t.co/KCTIVCsd1S
Building in opportunity for "productive struggle" -giving Ss times to figure things out.
A1 contd. Know there's more than 1 strategy for solving problem. Ss work together, give peer feedback based on success criteria
Great Idea! We have a Math bulletin board too!
A1. Embrace your mistakes and learn by them!
Having many ways to reach the understanding is vital for ALL Learners. https://t.co/brHRh8sHpK
A1 contd. Know there's more than 1 strategy for solving problem. Ss work together, give peer feedback based on success criteria
"Dont yet understand" as opposed to "cant understand"
I like to give Ss the chance to think about, write algorithms --want to do that more.
when students don't know the solution they deploy their Yeti
I'd love to see a pic of that if you ever have the chance to share it.
We're now offering the solution(s) are asking what the question could be.
Q2 - How will you bring Boaler's research to life in your math class to promote a more successful learning/teaching environment?
Wish I didn't feel so rushed to fit it all in--want to slow it down so there's more time for talk, multiple solutions
What do you think about the time factor--the rush to get it all in, wish we had more time for better teaching.
Helping all kids learn to mastery is more productive than rushing and finding only some have gotten there.
We integrate, relate or connect daily to accomplish more and deepen understanding https://t.co/VPFN2vO8AH
Wish I didn't feel so rushed to fit it all in--want to slow it down so there's more time for talk, multiple solutions
A2 - We started more thinking, questioning and engagement on the part of our Learners. They drive our Learning!
A2 I've started using a lot of the problems in the book, Mathematical Mindsets--Ss love them.
That was TODAY in our classes! https://t.co/WTHuQs8DPy
that's so powerful to let them ask the Qs. changes the focus and let's them think! MA
This is why I try to push Math Practice Stds. Thinking skills that transcend units and year
Of course they do! https://t.co/dtNGxRlNW9
A2 I've started using a lot of the problems in the book, Mathematical Mindsets--Ss love them.
A2 I'm also working to more explicitly employ and teach collaboration skills, give opp for collab. learning.
Stunning! https://t.co/3paSJol0Tj
A2 I'm also working to more explicitly employ and teach collaboration skills, give opp for collab. learning.
Ss actually love the process when you empower them to think
Welcome to tonight on with
Thanks for the remind Rik. Sorry Iate
I thought I had a pic on my phone, but... I'll try to get another one and send it to you.
Yes. I wish more teachers would feel that just once...it's contagious after that
Grace, pleased to see you in for with
A2. Always looking for the "why" and asking for representations as well as encouraging mathematical discourse
I want to build in more work with relevant data too--authentic problem solving, math work.
A2. Boaler's research is on my "to read" list. Confession is good, right?
so true. many Ts are so anxious about trying new things in math
Deepens understanding! https://t.co/U9t9GbGwvh
I want to build in more work with relevant data too--authentic problem solving, math work.
Thanks Rik. happy to be here
I really like this--thanks for sharing.
so how do we change that? - how do we improve the reach of your work?
Welcoming our and Crew to join us NOW in on with
Mary, why do you think this happens?
Thanks Mauren. Happy to be here. Good to see you
When our Learners are engaged in the Driver's Seat, that's a great beginning! https://t.co/dn3NMPO2SI
so how do we change that? - how do we improve the reach of your work?
Thanks. I may replicate it in my school.
The DESE data page for schools has good data for elem. school infographic work.
generalized math anxiety! many elem Ts are not math people
Teachers finding success can't b shy. Need vertical opportunities 2 shout out new successes
And many Ts teach the way they've learned.
I've spoken with many elem Ts who say they are afraid of math.
Q3 - How will you foster and encourage positive, successful student collaboration in the math classroom?
T's in my school really embracing math--PLC/RTI has helped.
A2 open ended questions that have several solutions. Students try and find one that nobody else has thought of. Needs deep thought
Wow! We talk a lot about math at PLC--I think that's helped.
Math is still underserved in most places. Fewer math than literacy coaches.
A3 - With , we're seeing risk-taking and struggles as worthwhile steps on our Learning Journey!
If only we all had a Maureen in our districts :)
So true and it doesn't need to be that way..
to the rescue! https://t.co/eQtsKpTgiB
Math is still underserved in most places. Fewer math than literacy coaches.
There are so many resources online that can model good teaching, problems, process for T's
You should recommend that they take my teacher course, it takes away fear!
I encourage Ss to help each other when they can. Both Ss grow in knowledge and confidence
Thanks :) Actually our new model of shared teaching has given me much more time to dig into math.
Jo, how is your teacher course structured?
Is there a link where they can find your PD offering(s)
A3 even if students go in the wrong direction look for what is "right" in their thinking and go from there. All voices validated
Ss LOVE puzzles! Want to use more often. I love the puzzles too.
and value every Learner! https://t.co/4wegMmpimW
A3 even if students go in the wrong direction look for what is "right" in their thinking and go from there. All voices validated
Love that idea, Lisa--can imagine asking, "What's right about this?" - great conversation starter.
Our Learners really liked in !!
SolveME is fabulous - immed. feedback w entry point for every kid
A3 I also think it's important to work w/Ss when it comes to grouping--let them help w/this.
A3. Set Ss up for success. Listen to Ss math conversations. Teach Ss to question each other and the process & to THINK
I like to ask my Ss to explain why answer makes sense. Good way to check for math sense. Makes Ss think
The more immediate the specific feedback is, the greater the growth. https://t.co/qD8yd96IOM
A3 I also think it's important to work w/Ss when it comes to grouping--let them help w/this.
What patterns, types of responses help w/this--I'm always looking for ways to provide more feedback.
Q4 - How do you support, embed, and make visible a multidimensional approach to math teaching, learning, assessment & success?
A1 Asking good questions (not giving answers) 2 build independence. https://t.co/95SuSup7tp
Q1 - In what ways do you encourage students' growth mindset with regard to math learning and teaching?
How do you fit in time for all the Ss voices with big classes?
All Our Learners wrote their initials on the board today and we crossed them off when they spoke.
A4 - We aim to by connecting, relating and integrating concepts to better understand the relationships.
Sheila--how does this work in your classroom, tell me more.
Seen success by giving groups time to work some of it out, then only a few need to speak full class.
Hands were up all over the room for 90 minutes!!
I am a special Ed T. Teach small groups of Ss so it is easy for me
A4 - We aim to use individual dry erase boards for our Learners to as often as possible.
How have your high schoolers responded to this language, mindset, Rik?
small groups help all find voice; share out; padlet or quick writes; exit slip
A4 encourage flexible thing. So important. Number Talks are a great way to encourage this at all grade levels. Builds number sense
I loved the example in the book of the two students solving a problem--related well to my Ss.
Only been at this for a week based on by https://t.co/uuZQbvOHZ2
How have your high schoolers responded to this language, mindset, Rik?
Can anyone recommend a good set of discussion guide Qs for the book, e.g. for book study by teachers? Thx
the children understand it too!
A4 We explicitly talk and try out multiple ways to learn, study math--discuss which ones we like best, find most useful.
have you tried ? outstanding for number talks and number sense
Great question in tonite's ! Kind of what we talked about today w/ list of good questions! https://t.co/95SuSup7tp
Q1 - In what ways do you encourage students' growth mindset with regard to math learning and teaching?
I'll be interested, let me know as you try more.
This is to ! https://t.co/baH32kmpXX
A4 We explicitly talk and try out multiple ways to learn, study math--discuss which ones we like best, find most useful.
Have groups of Ts read sections, come together to placeinto context of their Ss needs. How would this help?
MyMS Ss love They make their own and share out. Helps all study
Q3 Using - Collaboration Space. Some students can help the others like small teachers
my Ss love it too - use it every Wed and do 3 estimations.
I need to write that for you!
Developing our using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) with IGNITE our Learners!
I agree that we need good collaboration spaces and spaces for lots of accessible supplies.
Wanted to join tonight to talk math, but looks like I'm an hour off! We don't do daylight savings time here! I'm all thrown off!
Jump in NOW since we have 20 minutes left!
I try to teach a lot about how the brain works-what helps us learn and that we are all capable of learning math.
Q5 - How might you change the math learning/teaching physical environment to better support, inquiry based learning & teaching?
No problem, Talia. Join us for the next 20 minutes.
Panama is in the H-O-U-S-E tonight! https://t.co/oBdHTQhQcM
Wanted to join tonight to talk math, but looks like I'm an hour off! We don't do daylight savings time here! I'm all thrown off!
A5 - Our Learners sit in Collaborative Groups so they can communicate readily about our .
areas for collaboration; supplies to encourage concrete examples;
Please share if you do. That would be terrific!
Every child that visits my class has a math supply drawer--a place for lots of learning tools.
Thank you for joining us--I have these posters hung up outside my classroom too.
We use and in our https://t.co/215VefNnbi
Every child that visits my class has a math supply drawer--a place for lots of learning tools.
I'm really thinking about "maker math" these days--learning math in 3D, multiple paths, lots of hands-on.
I've never tried , but will look for them. Just got some grid white boards that are nice.
A5. We absolutely must use manipulatives when teaching the abstract.
Agree--we really need time to set up our math classrooms or studios or labs w/care, sets stage for good yr.
I'd love to see Math and ELA "labs" get the same love as science labs do
My Ss organize our tools in the first weeks of school the way they want them. Ownership!
Q6 - Will Boaler's research change the way you view and assign homework? If so, how?
Hoping to intersect math and science more w/STEAM as we move forward.
Nice idea Talia--I like that!
A6 - Still reading 's chapter on homework. We offer optional "Extra Practice" or "Extended Learning", but never HW.
I think manipulatives are more than just a tool to get an answer...
Should be seen as ways to test ideas, reason & communicate!
Need to share research with admin so our school makes changes-I have to follow policy, although stretch it as much as possible!
Keep us informed! Would love to hear how you're doing it
What does Boler say about HW? I have a very strong opinion against it...
Join us for the last 10 minutes on NOW on with
A6 I really like 's idea about have homework that focuses on reflection.
the world is full of "manipulatives." Shame anyone has to learn without them.
I bought grid white board slates last year. Love them. Also what whiteboard table top. Great for math
We've just recently reorganized when Ss said it wasn't organized enough for them!
I'm also thinking deeply about the research she cites related to homework--are we wasting our time worrying about it.
Not sure yet, but I'm about to start that chapter. Our "Extra Practice" is optional and always ungraded.
What's the policy you have to follow?
Question for on - What role do you see for applied cognitive principles of learning such as desirable difficulties?
woah huge coincidence - just tweeted a question to Jo as you tweeted that!
Boom! Because gets it and his Ss flourish. https://t.co/hDbqvdly8O
Not sure yet, but I'm about to start that chapter. Our "Extra Practice" is optional and always ungraded.
I'm always reorganizing--my room is full of so many materials.
jumping in way late. A5 teach Ss academic talk &stress multiple approaches. Stations work from els brought up 2 MS&HS
I think we fret way too much about HW - missed recess if not complete! ouch! what's the point?
A6 I facilitate a math PLC for many area districts and asked teachers to use the reflection sheet with their classes from book
LOVE IT! Hope you allowed the Ss to organize it. Ss ownership & accountability
Play is so much more important than HW! https://t.co/fRPUNO72kF
I think we fret way too much about HW - missed recess if not complete! ouch! what's the point?
In a small way, we try to use data related to science units, but I want to go much deeper.
A6 I like sending kids home with a math concept to talk about/share with their parents
Of course! They did everything, including labeling it! It's all their work!
agreed - I think we dwell on the craziest things and miss what's really important.
How did that work out, Lisa? Great idea
Thank you! https://t.co/0m11dpZGuQ
agreed - I think we dwell on the craziest things and miss what's really important.
ugh... Homework... I have some opinions
How do you teach the academic talk? Resources? Thanks for joining, Chris.
I don't know "desirable difficulties" but all difficulty leads to brain growth! struggle & mistakes are the best
HUGE! https://t.co/5xkYBezHUS
I have my kids teach their algorethims to their parents. Makes for interesting conversations!
I quit assigning HW - kids who can do it,don't need it. kids who can't do it, shouldn't do it w/out help
Profoundly true! https://t.co/cyhM07UihF
I quit assigning HW - kids who can do it,don't need it. kids who can't do it, shouldn't do it w/out help
I am a fan of releasing all teachers and students from the burden of homework!
Q7 - Going forward, how will you inspire and model a as soon as tomorrow?”
Seems that research supports this.
Don't forget the kids who have no help but get in trouble for not doing it.
You heard it here in from https://t.co/HNpK3Q2r66
I am a fan of releasing all teachers and students from the burden of homework!
A7 - TODAY our Learners commented on and appreciated our new thanks to .
A6
Thinking about homework???
Have you checked out Talking Math With Your Kids? Great ideas for sure!!!
that's the part I really don't get. then Ts punish the kids for not doing it https://t.co/c5HMjBbzcu
Don't forget the kids who have no help but get in trouble for not doing it.
Jumping in late but we got rid of hw this year except for 20 min of read. My math scores have skyrocketed and this was low class
A7. I'm going to read Boaler's research and share some things from tonight's with my math teachers!
Really missed you in tonight with and
Tomorrow we're working on some open explorations with fraction models, problem solving.
You have all been awesome tonight. Thanks for the inspiration
I've heard that reading at home is the only HW that correlates to success. worksheets don't
to add to A6 no HW meant that Ps didnt teach old method and Ss stay confused. Went to standards based grades and I know my Ss best
Thanks to everyone who came out tonight for and "math mindsets." Be sure to follow ppl you meet. Lots of new voices tonight!
Incredible appreciation for for sharing her with us in tonight!
thanks for letting me join tonight. You all are very inspiring. Do you always talk math?
Q7 encourage dialog which leads to engagement. Look for small successes. Many teachers need more work on their own mindsets too!
Next month. Our is the 4th Tuesday of each month.
So grateful to my partner , tonight's guest mod and resident rockstar for another great
So grateful to my partner , tonight's guest mod and resident rockstar for another great
Thanks for a great conversation tonight
Awesome job facilitating
share my love of learning and math with Ss. I will take risks in my teaching & learning.
loved the new article for parents. Can't wait to share it with my PLC!
Merri, we appreciate your wisdom, support and presence in for with https://t.co/WGYAukSHvT
Thanks for a great conversation tonight
Awesome job facilitating
Thanks for this happen!!!! Helps to make shifts w/your support!
