Q1 According to Carol Dwerk, “growth mindset” is the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems. What IS growth mindset & what is NOT growth mindset? #moedchat
A1 I'd say having empathy, trying to see things from another viewpoint or paradigm, we all have our biases and filters that cloud our thoughts, step outside them #moedchat
Growth mindset is grit. A can do attitude. A desire for constant improvement and a willingness to fail trying. It is not...your comfort zone. #MOedchat
Growth mindset is grit. A can do attitude. A desire for constant improvement and a willingness to fail trying. It is not...your comfort zone. #MOedchat
A1 stretching yourself trying new things and MAKING opportunities to learn, reflect demonstrate and collaborate. Take risks to get out of your comfort zone. Or having a growth mindset is being stagnate never taking risks or stretching yourself #moedchat
A1 A growth mindset requires a definitive belief that you don't have to accept your current skills & knowledge as permanent. It is NOT accepting failure nor letting others hinder your success #moedchat
#moedchat Growth mindset IS believing in and demonstrating your ability to expand your capabilities. It is NOT just praising effort with no change in results.
A1. A Fixed Mindset is where, no matter where you are, you may not believe in pushing yourself further or to a higher level. Afraid to go “beyond” where you are right now. #MOedchat
A1 It is the ability to understand that we can always do more, do better, and keep raising the bar for ourselves. It’s not being content with mediocracy. #MOedchat
A1: Growth mindset focuses on the ability for growth. It is the power of yet. The focus is on the learning process, thinking, feedback, and conceptualizing. #moedchat
A1: Growth of knowledge/intelligence can occur without force based on desire, if a T doesn't hit a S's "pleasure points" of learning, growth will not happen. Ts have to locate strengths above vulnerabilities. #moedchat
Growth mindset is grit. A can do attitude. A desire for constant improvement and a willingness to fail trying. It is not...your comfort zone. #MOedchat
#moedchat A1 Growth mindset is learning focused. Every task and all feedback is about the learning, not the grade. Growth mindset is NOT simply positive self talk.
Q2 Growth mindset is more about the process than just a final goal. What are some strategies you use to help help Ss focus on the process as well as the final goal? #moedchat
A1 It is the ability to understand that we can always do more, do better, and keep raising the bar for ourselves. It’s not being content with mediocracy. #MOedchat
A2 I've always found it important to talk with Ss about their thought process. The more self-awareness we can create in kids, the more they will understand about their own capacity to learn #moedchat
A2. Using the “Failure is an option“ practice. This helps students see that there is life (and growth) after making mistakes or a failed attempt. #moedchat
A2 - I see my teachers ask questions that cause students to be reflective and that awaken metacognition during activities and projects. This shifts the focus from the end to where they are. #MOedchat
A2 I think it is focusing on the positives of how much we learn as we go. We might not get to the final answer/product, however look at what we have learned, and how far you have come. #MOedchat
#moedchat A1 Foster growth mindset through student goal setting, frequent reflection, lots of immediate feedback without a grade getting in the way, and students tracking their own progress.
Q1 According to Carol Dwerk, “growth mindset” is the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems. What IS growth mindset & what is NOT growth mindset? #moedchat
A2 Reflection and debrief sessions. Allowing time for discussions of what went right and what did the Ss learn is just as important as reaching the goal. #MOedchat#growthmindset
Q2 Growth mindset is more about the process than just a final goal. What are some strategies you use to help help Ss focus on the process as well as the final goal? #moedchat
#moedchat "Mathacognition" and constant re-assessment are how I help Ss develop a growth mindset. SBG allows Ss to earn credit quickly or slowly...but for the same value. Acquisition and retention are rewarded, not just speed. Mathacognition develops reflection and ownership.
A2: I tell the kids, if you know can do better then do better. I like to suggest with questioning, and admit that what we do new has a relatively unknown outcome, so grading techniques creates themselves with the process. #moedchat
A2: I think being open and honest about failures and struggles for success are big. I try to do that with students and staff. No one is perfect but we can always be better. #moedchat#GrowthMindset
A2 Its already been mentioned but using the Power of Yet. "I can't do that, yet." Being their cheerleader. Not grading everything. Not focusing on grades. Collaboration. Team work. #moedchat
A2 - Helping Ss to find purpose in something helps greatly when working towards a growth mindset. It’s very hard to talk grit and growth when the work is something that they don’t see purpose in. Show them a why let them find the how..chase a goal. #problemsolving#MOedchat

A2: Setting goals, reflection opportunities, and meet-ups involving students explaining and sharing what they are thinking. The most powerful thing you can do is get them talking about their thinking. #MOedchat
What our kids are doing - total join effort here! Debbie - Andy is teaching my kids how to make gifs in addition to static photos for future snaps. #somuchfun#moedchat
Kids ask me if I like what they've done, I say "No, but do you like it?" At first they give me a confused look, but eventually they get the point (that I'm pretty sarcastic) that it is about them being proud of what they make. #moedchat
A2 goals are important but students must learn the importance of creating a plan to achieve the goal. Many of our teachers use journals to set goals, create plans, and track progress. It’s also necessary to model risk taking and have convo about success being messy #MOedchat

I will totally admit for now, I have not done anything in the realm of creative instruction/learning. My groove is off to a slow start! Next year, I know exactly how I want to start the first day. #moedchat
#moedchat We wouldn't trust a shoe designer that doesn't understand how the foot works. As Ts, we ARE brain changers. And yet....many of us know so little about the brain. Imagine what we could do if we learned more about how the brain learns!!
Nope. You're taking it to the next level with gifs. Really helps to create these and save in Drive to use all year long! What are you using for the gifs? #moedchat
Oh, Wow! That sounds great. I would love to hear more about how the Ss react to this when you start vs once seasoned. Do you use a Socratic Seminar or another format? #MOedchat#growthmindset
A3 gives them hope to know they can do hard things where they may have been lacking belief. Told my class just this week that every mistake they make causes their brains to grow. Must read #mathematicalmindsets by @joboaler#MOedchat
A3: @EricJensenBrain’s work is so critical for understanding how we can use brain enriched strategies. “How we feel is what’s real. It’s the link to what we think.” #moedchat
A3 - The brain & the body. Wellness, stress management, sleep. Relief from the grind...it all impacts learning & for the better. Growth mindset includes taking time for yourself. You can’t be your best you when you are stretched too thin to stressed to the max. Ss too! #MOedchat
#moedchat A3 My Ss hear people say, “I was just never any good at math,” and “I’m not a math person.” That misconception can be clarified with brain research.
Yes! A thousand times yes!! I am so thankful I was able to get a masters that was all about brain research and the science of learning. Can’t imagine not knowing it and always thirsty for more. #lifelonglearner#moedchat
A3 I think this is an example of why moving/exploration/play is so important. I'll admit, I am not always aware of this and get caught up in trying to get things done #moedchat
A3 - Having an understanding of how something works gives more insight into how to mold it and address inadequacies. Much like a mechanic can help someone diagnose a car issue without actually seeing or experiencing the issue. #MOedchat
#moedchat And so frustrating that you'd never hear anyone admit with almost glee that "I'm not a good speller" or "I'm not very good at reading and writing." But math...it's like they are in a special VIP club!
#moedchat A3 My Ss hear people say, “I was just never any good at math,” and “I’m not a math person.” That misconception can be clarified with brain research.
A3 OH OH OH...the brain! 🧠 I love growing dendrites! ;-)
Start slow and be strategic and meticulous about reaching the goal. It's not about how fast you reach it. Remember, the tortoise & the hare story? 🐢🏆
#MOedchat#growthmindset
I recommend attending the @TheCTTL in the summer. A great place to learn about the brain, the latest in education research, and connecting with incredible leaders and peers passionate about the science of learning! #moedchat
A3- Our Ts and Ss, especially those that work with or come from traumatic backgrounds, need to know how we can help our students get to a calm place where they can be productive. #moedchat
A4 - my best teachers model risk-taking and failure for their students. This year, I have given teachers my blessing for FAILure. I am also trying to model this in faculty meetings. #MOedchat
A4 students need to see us struggle and persevere, we also need to share stories of others who have grown from struggle. Challenge students and when they fail teach them how to problem solve #moedchat
A4 Ummmm, chocolate and pizza! 😜
Wellness, teach them about taking a break, disconnecting, reflecting by getting fresh air, taking a walk, swinging, playing...then discuss and try, try again!
#MOedchat#growthmindset
A4: Ss hate it but on certain assignments I refuse to help them. Fourth graders hate it at the BoY because they’ve always been given help as needed. It’s hard for me to watch them struggle but so necessary in the long run. #moedchat
A4 - Celebrate failures and getting the win when something has been kickin your butt for a while! That’s a great feeling. Lead by example try and fail and overcome in front of Ss. #MOedchat
A4- It’s important to have classrooms set up to where students are comfortable in taking risks. They have to know a caring adult is there to help them along the way. #moedchat
A4 They see me struggle, a lot. I guess just giving them the experience and helping them work through it. There is no giving up in #innovationclass only moving on #moedchat
#moedchat Providing an answer never helps Ss overcome a struggle. Helping them identify where a breakdown is occurring, how to overcome....and empowering Ss to help each other generously and kindly....that's where I see the real growth mindset develop in all Ss.
A3: The chemicals that direct the emotions of the brain to be reactive is challenging. The angry ones are challenging, but man, are they smart! They adapt better than others. Ts just have to KNOW the triggers. #moedchat
Q5 How can our words or actions switch focus to the power of "yet?" How do you introduce the power of "yet" to your Ss? Resources? Please share! #moedchat
A4: Start with small opportunities I struggle and then grow from there. Model struggle and failure on a real level. Celebrate growth and success! #moedchat
A5 I think this were Pre-Test/Post-Test show the students. When you show them the power of yet. Pre-test you don’t know/understand it yet... Post-test look what you now know, and what yet still don’t know yet. #moedchat
A5: When I try a new app, I tell the kids honestly that I don't know what I'm doing no more than they do. "Let's see what happens if . . ." is what I like to say. #moedchat
A5- I used a student-led conference script as a teacher. Having students chart out their progress and then share it out loud with their parents allowed them to take some ownership. #moedchat
#saskedchat#moedchat Before we get to the end, make sure to follow the great educators here who have affirmed, challenged, and/or inspired you! Staying connected is a great way to keep growing yourself!
A4 If you ask enough good questions, they can usually work their way through the struggle. It’s easy to get busy and want to answer immediately, but their is value in the struggle!🌟 #moedchat
Q5 How can our words or actions switch focus to the power of "yet?" How do you introduce the power of "yet" to your Ss? Resources? Please share! #moedchat
A6 I've learned that being tenacious can be rewarding. I believe that the harder you work, the better you get. So, when something is hard, I rarely give up. #moedchat
It's so easy to fall into old habits. I have to be intentional and justify to myself why I do things sometimes. I know it's best to slow down a bit, but it's hard. #moedchat
A5 #moedchat The power of yet can be seen in celebrating the fruits of struggle. Repeated opportunity to demonstrate mastery of skills instead of the traditional finality of a test grade helps students overcome anxiousness and focus on learning.
#moedchat I play a new song on piano each year. I play the song exactly once a day. At first, it takes me 30 min to play it. By the end of the year, I can play it without looking at music. Pathetique, Moonlight Sonata were last 2 years. This year? Fur Elise or Clair de Lune.
A6 My personal mission statement is to learn everything about everything so I can cut the edge and not just be on it, I let kids know that and I make it a point to do that. The HVAC guy that came to my house recently was not as enthused about it... #moedchat
A4 encourage them to take risk in the classroom no matter the outcome. Model innovation and get up after a fall. Speak taking daily and make it the norm #moedchat
A6 - READ..or in my case listen! To and from work every day. Also trying very hard to take care of body and de-stress this year. Always looking inside for growth opportunities. Also working hard to push the boundaries of technology in a small rural school district! #MOedchat
Trying to keep learning to be a better husband, dad, educator. Taking a note from my wife to not let everyday be status quo. Push to make life what I want it to be. #moedchat
A6 Personal growth doesn’t just happen. You have to actively seek it and be willing to shift your mindset at times! Stepping out of my comfort zone, protects against complacency!🌟 #moedchat
A6: I'm always striving to learn more! I am open and real with my struggle and over-the-top excited when I learn something new or finally have a breakthrough. It is important to #bereal#MOedchat
There have been times when I tell that to my students. "You know - I did this because...but I didn't like it. So I'm starting again this way." Kids have been really receptive to it. #moedchat
A6 #moedchat Building a PLN that shares ideas and asks questions. Spending more time learning, discussing, and reflecting and less time marking math problems right or wrong and recording a grade. What was I thinking?! #knowbetterdobetter
A6: I like to build things. I get projects going, and I try new things a lot. This summer, I raised some turkeys for the first time. I may never roast another turkey again! #moedchat
That was the "Who's your main man? Who's my main man? Get it done" mantra. We have a few different ones depending on the situation :) #lovethatkid#hedrivesmenuts#moedchat
A6 Personal growth doesn’t just happen. You have to actively seek it and be willing to shift your mindset at times! Stepping out of my comfort zone, protects against complacency!🌟 #moedchat
A6 I am always trying to learn more. I have started surrounding myself with people who are different from me; people with different backgrounds, beliefs, educational experiences, so I can learn from them and be a better person. #moedchat
A6- As an instructional coach, we have to model instructional strategies. We’re not perfect! We have to be vulnerable and reflect on our practice with our teachers too. #moedchat
