#UrbanEd chat is a twitter chat for educators. Topics relevant to the subject of urban education will be discussed, but all educators are encouraged to join the conversation. The chats will be moderated by Ben and Neil, founders of Engaging Educators and elementary school teachers in Detroit, MI.
Q1 Trauma is any assault on a childโs sense of safety, security, personhood, and general physical or social emotional experience. It has a rippling impact over the course of days/wks/years ๐ณ it can show up in so many ways both at home and school #UrbanEdChat
A2 Making that relational connection in the classroom is something we should always practice with all Ss...when trauma situations are present, a trust and foundation have already been built #UrbanEdChat
Q2 What is it that you want to accomplish at school? How can I support you? If you could do anything with no limitations, what would that be? โก๏ธSo much of the work supporting Ss who have or are experiencing trauma is relational & abt holding space for their voices #UrbanEdChat
A2.1 These are common issues in the everyday lives of Ss...I know a lot of educators feel the battle is not with the Ss but with issues they have no control or experience to address #UrbanEdChat
Q3 Class ๐๐พ room ๐๐พ meetings ๐๐พ When I worked in a contained K-2 behavior intervention classroom we met daily and discussed behavior & choices & responses. I explicitly taught children what acceptable behavior was & what to do when a Ss was out of pocket #UrbanEdChat
A3 Sometimes These life issues are driving the exhibited behaviors...Some Ss never get a chance to voice how they are feeling or what they are going through...Sometimes just getting them outside in the hall and asking them whatโs going on #UrbanEdChat
A1. Trauma is an event for any adult or child that hinders their safety or sense of self. The effect on a child is that they lose who they are and how to participate in the world around them. #UrbanEdChat
A3 If you have some established norms and discussion times, then the Ss will have a sense of when to ask questions or seek insight..takes a lot of work #UrbanEdChat
A2. My first response for students who have been in a traumatic event is to get to know them on a personal level and allow them to get to know me. It is important that they know someone cares, that there are people they can trust, and that I will keep them safe. #UrbanEdChat
A4 Take time to address any and all questions sensitively and respectfully in a forum...donโt wait for questions or anxiety to build...the longer we wait, the more anxiety builds #UrbanEdChat
A4 Ss know the โplanโ to ignore the behavior, move away from the path of the tornado, pick up headphones etc, know we will have an energy realeasing activity post behavior and meeting #UrbanEdChat
A3. I mean that depends on the situation. However, I try to prepare students regardless if it is a student or emergency. Afterwards we discuss and take a quiet minute to wind down while I explain what they will be doing next, like notes or a worksheet. #UrbanEdChat
A4) Stay calm, keep the emotion out of it, set limits that are intended to teach not punish, be supportive - not why are you doing this but what can I do to support #UrbanEdChat
A4. I am CPI certified, so first is safety. Then just speaking calmly and be understanding. Tell the class the student is obviously upset and not to stare while inviting the student to walk in the hall to talk to me about how their feeling or reflect on their own. #UrbanEdChat
A5 Share their success in a way they may not expect...send a letter to the Superintendent, post on social media, and send a letter home to parents #UrbanEdChat
A6 Just completed the @WeBreatheChange Yoga & Mindfulness training program so I could become stronger with the self-care and trauma informed practices ๐ฟ but overall taking a break, maintaining intimate relationships and remembering to laugh & play #UrbanEdChat
A5. Firstly, I always tell the students at the beginning of the year that no one is perfect and that my weakness is science. Then I always offer tutoring after school or having a student do examples on the board while I work one on one. #UrbanEdChat
A6. That is an amazing question because I suck at that. I have even had medical issues because of pushing myself too hard. Now I set time limits for myself and make sure weekends are officially my time. Plus I live in the country so I go walking in the woods. #UrbanEdChat
A6) Finding time during the actual moments - the mindup curriculum works for kids and our Ts too... take time to do something for yourself on a regular basis #UrbanEdChat
