The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
It's time for another great addition of #bfc330 that I could have started at 1:30!! Anyway, today should be our last day of PARCC testing, so that's a good thing. #bfc530
Without even thinking, math manipulatives. I have been using them for 30 years. Cannot teach math without them. #bfc530 And books..lots of books. If I had plenty of those two items, I could teach my whole curriculum #bfc530
Definitely trying to incorporate a Math Interactive Notebook. It's so tough to get students to learn how to use them at Middle School level but looking forward to using it at HS for first time next Fall #bfc530
I love activities that get students up and moving. My favorite is probably a Scavenger Hunt. Students work around room, hall, etc to find answers to questions. #bfc530
Isn't it nice to get a written note once in a while? There are studies that say students retain more by taking notes by hand. My Note Taking page https://t.co/8KNS1Cr3WO#bfc530
BOOKS- BOOKS-BOOKS! I am grateful that Ss have access to so many sites that have a variety of digital texts . . . BUT, we can’t forget about using good old fashioned books. There’s something about the feel of turning each page & closing the book when you’re done. #bfc530
Yes..and the amount of books I have downloaded to read or have bought is getting out of hand..I am breaking my own rule of not buying until I finish! #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530 - old school tool we couldn't live without? Definitely our small individual whiteboards- we pull them out multiple times a day- much less taxing to write on then paper/pencil for many of my students
My fave "old school tool" I can't do without is a deck of cards for daily visibly random grouping.
As Ss enter, they get a card, telling them which group to sit at that day. #bfc530
I like sticky notes. Good for to-do items, good for capturing and organizing ideas, good way to have students record their thoughts and then post for the class. #bfc530
I will admit I still have my old Rolodex with names, numbers, email addresses, and business cards in it. Even with the technology and having everything at my fingertips on my phone, I still hang on to it. #oldschool#bfc530
#bfc530 A favorite old and new-school tool is the library. For research try hardbound books and indexes as well as digital books and database articles.
Non-tech tools.. books, of course...but I’d be LOST without my easel and paper! Group sharing, kids writing, anchor chart creation. Portable, always available, colorful #bfc530
I have a set in my classroom library ... great for when a student goes “off task” when using the computer or when the power goes out but still needs to research. #bfc530
I love how the answer doesn’t pop up for the kids. Teaches letter by letter alpha order, scanning for bold, etc. sometimes I’ll have some kids on the dbase and some in the book. The kids in the book often get more info bc they are more invested. #bfc530
Most of the stuff doesn’t change, right? Tangrams, base10 blocks, color tiles, it is the same. Although we have recently gotten fraction tiles which are new! #bfc530
Yes! Every single day. And then we start by sharing our names - even if we think our partners might know them - & discussing the getting to know you question of the day:

I've hated pencils since I was a kid, never could see what I wrote unless I flexed the little muscles I had. Always pen, even when I keep the baseball scorecard when coaching. I can live with cross outs when I can see them #bfc530
I am starting to move back to a paper planner/calendar. I find it easier to get a larger glance and handwriting increases my memory of events because of the brain-action connection. #bfc530
Yes! @WenzelChapman sketchnotes with her favorite old school tool @Sharpie using them. 😁 I also love the giant chart paper and want to try these..#bfc530
Thanks for sharing! I bookmarked to read later. I am definitely intrigued, as I continue to hone my math teaching skills.. hmm... thanks again! #bfc530
Oh, and bookstores. I buy on Amazon, when I know what I want. But when I travel I love to go to book stores and browse (we don't have bookstores here) #bfc530
There are still times when to teach something, the best technology is pen, paper and maybe a calculator. Think teaching perspective in Visual Arts or doing Calculus in Maths. In terms of new tools, the ability to do virtual tours without leaving the classroom-Awesome! #bfc530
@DrCSJones My dad yelled at me for my form (but then told me I was a super star for doing this) #bfc530 Never put your head down when you have something on your neck.. lol.. thought you would appreciate that.. 51 and still getting scolded.
Today:

I have the same kids all day and they have desks. But we do switch it up quite a bit, but your idea of every day intrigues me. Thanks..Can’t wait to read this..#bfc530
Digital Drawing and tools are great but I STILL love crayons, paper, scissors and glue. AND colored pens & donʻt forget sharpies! AND #bfc530#sketchnotes
Media creation is a modern skill I think we underestimate right now. We live in a world of memes, graphics, 15 second videos, and self-branding. Students will need this some day as communicated has changed dramatically and continues to evolve . #bfc530
To #bfc530 and @bohndrake I often lurk here, but rarely chime in. Not today. My wife has never liked making her lunch in the morning, could not wait to retire so she did not have too. After 32 years, mostly teaching middle school, today is the day. She cried. She's my inspiration
Hey thanks for this quote! I’ve been waiting to run across one like this for my tour at Bow Tie Tours in Philadelphia! I’ll use it today!

Tomorrow I visit Somers Middle School in Somers, NY for my 3rd consecutive yr. One of the best events I have ever participated in. Can't wait to bring Mr. Madison's msgs to the 7th graders. This yr’s topic, the difficulty we had ratifying the Constitution in NY. #edchat#bfc530
#bfc530 Maybe instead of gun violence we need to address what's causing kids to kill at all. Maybe its the Rage, violence and hate leading them to do it. But that doesn't fit your politics does it? so just keep them angry and violent and blame someone else when they kill again
#bfc530 They can use any tool they want to kill but if they use a knife, nothing is said, if they run over ppl with cars, not a big deal, b/c none of that fits their politics. so they enrage, anger, and push then the blame law abiding citizens of the NRA. This BS hate isn't new.
#bfc530 Which category does this fit into? Critical thinking? or is it not worth addressing while everyone speaks about being excited about this and that, then condemning law abiding citizens of the nra when the violence and murders happen? hell they told them to kill
#bfc530 Arent a lot of these kids killing saying they wanted to kill themselves but some just loose their nerve after they kill others? Sad how no one finds this all worth addressing while they out screaming and calling law abiding nra members murderers.
#bfc530 So agitating, enraging &approving of violence behavior, including that by educators, telling our kids to kill, they not worthy to be alive b/c of their race, is not an issue when kids go kill like they told or incited to do? And u blame a tool or the NRA? HELL NO
Sticky notes for sure! I’ve been using them for 17 years and no technology will replace them😁 Also butcher paper for some group work, as well as an easel & chart paper to capture students’ thinking during whole group discussions & co-create anchor charts. #bfc530
#bfc530 have u ever seen REAL educators get on a bus 2 stop the killings being promoted by other educators? haven't heard a peep out of them.R they all so political they don't give a crap? is this part of the enrage plan by the Democrats to attack law abiding citizens of NRA?
#bfc530 Time to start holding them accountable. Enraging our youth, to go kill and then blame the NRA and law abiding citizens for the very actions they promote. HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.START SUING THE SCHOOLS, AND THE EDUCATORS for suicides, killings and violence. SHUT THEM DOWN
Old school...chalk & a chalkboard. Love the feel & drag, great tool for learning how to write. I will use chalk on a sentence strip, not quite the same, but pretty close second. #BFC530
It never occurs to men like @GlobeMcGrory (see text) that maybe we actually *are* looking for advice about WRITING, that maybe we don't want to be asked what we are wearing while we write, that maybe we want to work, to be journalists.
We asked @GlobeMcGrory to come on the show tonight to talk about the allegations made against him by a former Globe reporter. Crickets. I guess he's saving himself for WGBH tomorrow? https://t.co/HUqKbg1x5A
Sorry I missed the chat this morning. Just reading over everyone's tweets. Everyone loves Post-it's & Books. But how about:
Stickers! Even my High School kids LOVE stickers! LOL

Question for all educators out there! I need your help!
When using blended learning, what methods/platforms are effective for capturing/documenting learning that takes place outside the classroom?
Hours completed, tasks & assessments,etc
