How and why do you use video in the classroom? K-12 educators are finding that video is a powerful tool to illustrate learning. Join us for #SchoolTubeChat to offer ideas, ask questions, and find out how others are leveraging the power of video.
Hello and welcome to the first ever #SchoolTubeChat! I'm excited to host the chat tonight.
We will follow the Q and A format and ask 3 questions, along with a last word to offer student examples. @SchoolTube#SchoolTubeChat
I'm Don from St. Louis. I teach Broadcast Technology, multimedia journalism, and filmmaking. But I'm also a HUGE #medialiteracy advocate for ALL K-12 students and teachers. You can find me at https://t.co/iukF5TudGR.
Please introduce yourself! #SchoolTubeChat@SchoolTube
Just a lowly yearbooking rep from the woods of PA who spent 17 prior years as a broadcaster and journalist. Wants to see what new tips I can pick up here. #SchoolTubeChat
Students document and share their learning through video. Creating videos to showcase knowledge serves as a powerful tool to show students that their thinking matters and they can share it with the world! #SchoolTubeChat
A1: My students & I have published video on @SchoolTube for over 10 years now! I have found students are much more responsible, accountable, & motivated when they know their work will be seen by the masses. https://t.co/T00SrakH3i#SchoolTubeChat
A1: I flipped my classroom when I taught history, then moved students to making their own instructional videos. Had so much impact in school, it became a film class. #schooltubechat@schooltube
A1: I have completed replaced all my lectures with self made videos. The model has allowed me to develop a self paced course that is graded through mastery as opposed to completion #schooltubechat
A1: Cont’d—Taught film for three years. Love of creating and spreading ideas caught the school on fire. Green screens popped up in every hallway. We started a local film festival in the community. #SCHOOLTUBECHAT@schooltube
A1 #SchoolTubechat Students in my cinema classes create fiction and non-fiction visual stories, including documentaries we’ve produced in countries like Cuba and Vietnam
A1 #SchoolTubechat As a teacher, I use video screencasts to flip my classroom: students have access to content at their own speed and I can use class time for more important things like collaboration and feedback. #edchat#innovation
And here is a video made with students! The students started telling historical fictions with me using research to inform their scripts...so fun! And cheesey! But wiling to make a fool out of myself for students :) #schooltubechathttps://t.co/i8kP98l4E2
A1: We also consume video as we don't have enough money for field trips to the eastern hemisphere. :) It's a way to engage more senses, build background knowledge, and to understand. #SchoolTubeChat
A1: in my own way I flip the classroom with the schools I work with, pushing yearbook learning via video and then lead later instead of lecturing. https://t.co/WjHTE7yegt, video series in left column. #schooltubechat
A2 #SchoolTubechat#Medialiteracy should be the number one priority for educators right now. The best way to teach that is to have students create video stories so they’re better able to understand the language and grammar of visual #literacy@ILA@newsela
It is important and very stressed in terms of instructional design. Also, how many times do you scroll on facebook when you can't have volume up and read captions in videos? #schooltubechat

A1- we use student created video for our daily newscasts. We create PSAs, school updates, weather reports, this day in histories, sports updates, music videos, etc. I use video everyday! #powerofvideo#SchoolTubeChat
A2: I believe it's really important to bypass the 4 walls in which our students learn & open up the world to them. @JenWilliamsEdu & I collaborated on this article which talks about connecting our students around the world. https://t.co/AzSNatPHBx#SchoolTubeChat@SchoolTube
A2 #SchoolTubechat Letting students tell their own stories through video says that we care about their perspective and creates a culture of mutual respect—something our world desperately needs these days.
A2: sometimes the videos we find as teachers are good. Sometimes they aren’t. When kids say they aren’t good I use video as an opportunity for the kids to make something better. “You didn’t like my video? Well, step up kids!” #schooltubechat
A2: Once students started following suit and making videos it was a game changer! They become more involved and my turn rate was 100%! We learned video skills with history and literacy.#schooltubechat
A2: Student created video offers your students an easy but impactful learning experience. But you must publish! @SchoolTube has offered us Public & Private options to cover all of our grade levels. Read more here https://t.co/ykibQu74bP. #SchoolTubeChat@SchoolTube
A2 I started having the students create videos because I saw they got excited when I showed #edtech videos to them and thought thy'd love creating their own! #schooltubechat
I did have filtering issues with Youtube. Used a link to block all ads. At one point the school also blocked all youtube video...I found a loop hole :) #schooltubechat
Q2: Yesterday I had videos turned in for most of the evening, and even a couple early in the morning before I even woke up. This is a different engagement level than a worksheet or a more traditional approach to learning. #SchoolTubeChat
A3: Intro designer, iMovie, WeVideo, PortalFX, Comicbook camera to make title pages, ToonCamera, Veescope, DoInk, Stop Motion Studio, Adobe Spark, etc. #schooltubechat
So true. Watch how students react when you tell them they're making a video. I’ve never seen a student get that excited about filling out a worksheet. #SchoolTubeChat#PowerOfVideo
A3: It's not an app but @SchoolTube has been our mainstay to host all of our student & educator videos. We easily embed in other sites & it's NOT BLOCKED in schools! No filter needed. https://t.co/xYs85fPeAg#SchoolTubeChat
A2-because my vision or goal for this yeR is to #CreateOverConsume. Meaning that kids who create learn more from those who just consume. #SchoolTubeChat
Here is a video of film CR....lots of videos of students. Man i miss teaching this, I miss the school, but I don't miss the kids! You know why? BcI still talk to all of them!!!!! Film connects. They will be my students 4ever #schooltubechathttps://t.co/yEBnS9s4NN#schooltubechat
A3: Clips, iMovie and my new personal favorite is Keynote and it’s magic move feature. Join the #MagicMoveChallenge and see what amazing things your kids can make in Keynote! #schooltubechat
Wow! So many enthusiastic and innovative educators here in #SchoolTubeChat! Thanks for all you do! Agreed, apple clips is an amazing tool for making video.
Last words: I had 100 students spend the night to do a horror film festival. 100! On a Friday! It was so epic. The whole school became a set. They filmed from 10pm-10am. #schooltubechathttps://t.co/Ftbhsj0aA1
#SchoolTubechat Some of my best student visual storytelling has come from out international documentary trips to Vietnam, Cuba & Cambodia https://t.co/3nMUqsGdet
"iAm" iMovie Trailers has also been one of my more effective student video lessons. Great for getting to know students & it's a transferrable project for book trailers, reflections, character analysis, etc. Find the lesson here: https://t.co/1qKm0gFwIp#SchoolTubeChat@SchoolTube
My former student @Ian_Weather was a reluctant video student UNTIL I asked what HE wanted to create. He said he wanted to be a Weather man. Done! Never saw a student work much harder after that. Here’s some of his work https://t.co/FPMbAGVUAb. #SchoolTubeChat#powerofvideo
Have you seen our Global Student News Network https://t.co/1yWFrgcpLv? 87 countries have registered & we invite YOU to submit your student videos. Tweet @GlobalSNN#GSNN w/a link & we may feature it on our site! ANY student media is welcome. #SchoolTubeChat@SchoolTube
Last word: I've done many huge vid projects with students that I am proud of. Don't underestimate the power of the small daily activities that make learning come alive. Video doesn't have to be reserved for something special at the end of a unit! #SchoolTubeChat
I totally borrowed this lesson from Don and used it with 6th graders. It is a great opportunity to teach angles and film skills while getting to know your students. #schooltubechat
