I'm very pleased to introduce our special guests for tonight - "The Purposeful Principals" (Julie Hasson and Missy Lennard). Take it away @PPrincipals! #P12Leaders
The first question is coming up. Please use the #P12Leaders hashtag throughout the chat. We will be giving a book away to one lucky participant tonight.
A1: That we must build equitable models of funding for schools derived from student needs. That this will be difficult because we must admit some require more to have a real shot at a level chance to launch.
#P12Leaders
Q1. My big bold belief is that we can and WILL achieve our vision of forging reasoned minds and educated hearts in all @mybrownschool students. #P12Leaders
A1. My big bold belief is that we can and WILL achieve our vision of forging reasoned minds and educated hearts in all @mybrownschool students. #P12Leaders
A1.2-
That we must stop bowing to the altar of assessment. Embrace the culture and climate of our schools. That students and their schools are not defined by a once a year test. That we must build accountability models that showcase the whole child and growth.
#P12Leaders
A1 doing the same things over and over and expecting different results is insanity! Therefore we constantly discuss best practices ;) and adjust!!#P12Leaders
A1: Every student has a finish line to cross, they're all in different types of races. So we have to training them differently to reach their goals. Regardless of the distance they run, they each have victories to worth celebrating. #P12Leaders
A1: That school should work for students. Not the other way around. And as such we as LEADERs are obligated to continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the name of CREATING together. #P12Leaders
A1: Every student should have the opportunity to be empowered in their learning. Schools must be places where students embrace curiosity, feel free to take risks, learn from failure and grow with a purpose. #p12leaders
A1.3-
That all students deserve several adults who will push them, believe in them, hold them to a high standard, and celebrate them for their success. We must have passion surrounding our students.
#P12Leaders
A1: I love❤️this question. One Big, Bold Belief guides my work is finding balance and joy in my work-knowing when to disconnect to really "connect" to it & making sure I love doing it everyday (joy) #P12Leaders#VBHasJoy🌻
Oops.. sorry for the typos!! A1: Every student has a finish line to cross, they're all in different types of races. So we have to train them differently to reach their goals. Regardless of the distance they run, they each have victories worth celebrating. #P12Leaders#fixed
#P12Leaders: My name is Chasity Strawder. I'm a certified elementary teacher, and I'm also a certified K12 administrator. Not currently working but will be in the future 😏
A1: We must focus on the whole child. Social and emotional issues exist and must be addressed before students can reach their full potential. If students are consistently experiencing trauma, how can we expect them to be successful at school?#P12Leaders
Question 1 - That we can make a difference each and every day. Some of our students have been dealt a tough hand - we can be the light in their day! #Relationships#P12Leaders
A2 We try to communicate the message consistently in everything we do. You have to over communicate the vision. And you have to provide experiences that support the vision. #P12Leaders
A2: Aligning all goals with students at the heart. Asking questions like “How does this impact Ss?” “What will students gain from this goal?” #P12Leaders
A2: As Principal, I need to model what is expected. I empower my teachers to take risks, embrace failure, try new things and grow in their learning. When you empower your teachers you will see true learning happen in the classroom with their students. #P12Leaders
A2. I have learned that I’m not communicating our vision enough because some are not understanding the “why?” Now, I communicate it at every meeting, when I answer questions, and when I’m shooting down negativity. #P12Leaders
A2. Our school uses our vision statement to brand this belief with all stakeholders. We place our vision statement on everything from social media to letterhead. #P12Leaders
A2. With “All students can learn” we choose to focus on the growth aspect of the student. We realize that all students may not be proficient, but all students can be better and smarter than they were before. It is up to the school to convey this message. #P12Leaders
A2: Create an environment that rewards taking risks. We must have the courage to shake things up and create schools that work for kids. Never defend the status quo! #P12Leaders
I absolutely agree! I hope to instill those experiences in both Ss and Ts. We need to communicate the vision throughout the entire school from the Ss on up! #P12Leaders
A2 We try to communicate the message consistently in everything we do. You have to over communicate the vision. And you have to provide experiences that support the vision. #P12Leaders
A1: I try to be willing to meet each student where they are. It's difficult not to be frustrated when students are in different places especially when you are trying to hit all of your content but I try to construct a plan unique to fit for each student. #P12Leaders
Yes!!! If you want to be a difference maker you have to be a risk taker! The status quo will not prepare our students for the future! #P12Leaders#futuredriven
A2: Create an environment that rewards taking risks. We must have the courage to shake things up and create schools that work for kids. Never defend the status quo! #P12Leaders
I believe that when we have high expectations for our students and the adults that work with them, everyone in the building will rise up to exceed our highest expectations! #P12Leaders
A2.2. As a leader you must:
- support risk
- celebrate success and failure
- motivate, encourage, cheerlead
- be relentless in your pursuit of where you want to be
- advocate loudly for those at your school, employees, students, community
- be visible
- be positive

#P12Leaders
Q1: The one big bold belief that drives my work is that I believe that ALL kids can learn. Without that solid belief, I have already failed as an educator to my students. It's my job to find out HOW they learn and then go from there.#P12Leaders
A2b: I communicate my Big, Bold Beliefs of #Joy & #Balance in all we do by helping design a #VBJoyFair2018🎪-it's an intentional way to help educators with....#joy and #balance of course! It's coming to so amazing! #P12Leaders
A3: All of them should reveal what I believe and what my vision is. Since it’s a deep seated part of me I want Everything I do to point people back towards the “why” #P12Leaders
A3-
How you act in the hallways.
How you act when challenged.
How you act when you are wrong.
How you act when you are right.
What you do when confronted with real adversity. Do you placate, or lead?
#P12Leaders
A3. I publically & privately praise actions that support the vision. I work w/ committees & SBDM to budget for and plan actions that support the vision. I say “No, I’m sorry...” to initiatives and spending that do not support the vision. Decision making becomes easy. #P12Leaders
The way you treat your students and employees, the way you handle situations, the way you celebrate successes and buckle down to fix adversity, the way you empower your students to reach their goals! #P12Leaders
A3: Being present in classrooms, running PD workshops, listening, supporting, encouraging, and sometimes just smiling and cheering on my staff and students! #P12Leaders
Q2: I communicate my belief through my character of sincere patience, compassion, and a open mind. Kids aren't easily fooled. They truly know if you care. #P12Leaders
I love that, authentic! I really know that I am where I want to be each and every day and I am the instructional leader not only in academic areas but social emotional and relational, as well. #P12Leaders
@PPrincipals A3: Focus when communication, both speaking and listening. Everyone in the classroom community matters, so modeling equity of voice makes an everlasting impression #P12Leaders
Actions speak louder than words. Every move you make resembles who you are #character What is your attitude when no one is watching. It controls everything #P12Leaders
A3: A Servant Leader understands that kids make mistakes and allow each child to have a fresh start each day...no matter how many referrals, detentions or suspensions they might have. #P12Leaders
A3: I do not give up. If I believe in a cause I do not give up. When my students give up on themselves, they are amazed when I still believe in them. Stay positive! Your students and staff will follow. #P12Leaders
A3: A Servant Leader understands that kids make mistakes and allow each child to have a fresh start each day...no matter how many referrals, detentions or suspensions they might have. #P12Leaders
A3: Joining late! I believe they way in which we interact with students shows this. Sometimes people talk a good game but when in front of Ss they show a different side. #P12Leaders
A4: That's tough but I don't think you can fake it too long and get results. Demonstrating care and compassion outside of the 50-ish minutes you get with each student goes a long way. #P12Leaders
A4: I think I'm just going to say what I said for A3 again, haha: My walk talks. And my talk talks. But I need to make sure my walk talks louder than my talk talks. #P12Leaders
A4 It's important to reflect. Am I leading in such a way people see what I value? Am I inspiring and encouraging others? Am I doing all I can to support kids and teachers and staff members? #P12Leaders
A4-
I am unapologetically blunt. Be transparent. Explain in detail what is going on. Be upfront with why you think something is right, and be open to be convinced otherwise. Don’t placate to keep harmony. Be OK with making tough decisions and standing behind them
#P12Leaders
A4: I honestly do not think about authenticity. If I really have to think about being authentic, it's not authentic. I live what I believe and seek to grow as a person on a daily basis though reading and surrounding myself by wise people. #P12Leaders
I'm confident that everyone I work with understands my belief that building relationships and meeting kids where they are instructionally are key to learning. #P12Leaders
A4: Authenticity is about being real and building trust. Kids are looking to us as adults to set the rules and enforce them in a fair and consistent manner. It's all about expectations and follow through. #P12Leaders
In my opinion, inspiration derives from an observed action, event or circumstance. I try to motivate teachers in the ways I hope they would motivate their students. #P12Leaders
Q4: Consistency. Being level-headed and showing up every day and doing what you say you’re going to do. Living into your values. Praising and celebrating the work of those around you without expectation of returns. #P12Leaders
A4. As a principal, I believe it is constantly gauging where you are as it relates to the vision of the school. Include staff in the decision making of how to reach the vision; solve problems and remove obstacles together. #P12Leaders
A4: This question is one that everyone should answer as a "check-in" on a regular basis-#P12Leaders I ensure I'm staying true to my Big, Bold Beliefs of #Joy & #Balance by staying kind, humble, & #empathetic: it keeps my work pure #VBHasJoy🌻
A3: consistency in decision making is key. Not from the standpoint of making the same decision, but instead that leaders remain consistent in the beliefs that guide their decisions. #P12Leaders
A2: In my opinion, inspiration derives from an observed action, event or circumstance. I try to motivate teachers in the ways I hope they would motivate their students. #P12Leaders
A4: Think before you speak. Take a step back and consider the greater picture. The word ‘Integrity’ echoes in my head before I react and respond. #P12Leaders
A4: Be consistent, be present, be transparent. Always be willing to have the conversation that can drive thinking and learning. Challenge the status quo and always make decisions in the best interests of students. #p12leaders
Transparency is key. Especially with budgets and why we do an initiative or undertake a new process these things should be done with folks at the table and with good discussion on the why. When they are a part of the why, it’s golden. That’s when we get results.
#P12Leaders
A3: The specific actions that reveal what I believe are by modeling how I want all Ss to be treated with respect, valuing & respecting the dignity of all, and communicating the need to reach all learners through small group targeted instruction. #P12Leaders
A4 The only way to be authentic is to be honest...with yourself. There can be no faking it because kids see right through you if you lie. Sometimes you have to admit what you don't know and always say sorry when you are wrong...especially to your students/staff #P12Leaders
Q4: I think it's important to believe, say, and do OUTSIDE of the classroom as well. Don't badmouth your students in the teachers' lounge. Value & protect them at all times.#P12Leaders
You are the community! They see you and your attitude, you might change theres. I enter school with a smile and leave with one (even when the day is rough) dont rub negativity off to others! #smileON. #P12Leaders
A5-
Positively I hope. 😂. I think a great measure of a leader is if they attract high performing people to their organization because they know it’s an environment they can soar. That goes for employees and students.
#P12Leaders
A2: Give more specific attention to the celebration of success (adults need it too, sometimes more than the kids), than to the pitfalls and/or difficulties. #P12Leaders
A5. Although leaders are not solely responsible for the culture of a school, they are crucial to a successful culture. Should leaders fail to cultivate the vision, teachers and students are less likely to strive towards it. #P12Leaders
Just like when you were a kid you looked up to your leaders and how they portrayed themselves. You could tell the ones who believed in what they had to say vs. the ones who blew smoke. Your teachers and students are watching and they deserve an honest, caring leader!#P12Leaders
A4: I show that I am authentic by admitting I don't have all the answers, owning my mistakes, and by being not just a leader on the side but a teacher and learner myself that is in the trenches along with all Ts and Ss. #P12Leaders
There is an old maxim that the lace of the leader is the pace of the organization. I think it holds true moreso in this instance. I hope it permeates all they do and that it’s a positive interaction. #P12Leaders
A5: #P12Leaders#UnMappedEd Our energy is the fertile soil & a honest reflection of what we wish to see in our colleagues. That's why I believe in the power of #Joy & #Balance in all we do. #VBHasJoy🌻
Q3: How I speak of my students to parents and colleagues reveal what I believe. I can't show my kids one side to their faces and speak the opposite behind their backs. I need to be authentic at all times. #P12Leaders
A5 We build on each other's energy, enthusiasm, and effort. When you're around people who share your passion, it's awesome. It's unstoppable. #P12Leaders
A5: Trust! My colleagues know they can come to me anytime. I am committed to my colleagues just as I am the students. It takes a whole team to create success. #P12Leaders
A5: Leaders must have a vision that is cultivated, nurtured and communicated on a regular basis. If you aren't living your beliefs every day, how can you expect your teachers and students to buy in? We must be "all in" for kids and for our school. No excuses. #p12leaders
A5: One thing I've learned as I pursue my degree in admin is that not everyone I work with thinks like me or is passionate about the same things or even considers my priorities their priorities... and that's okay! I do hope I'm making a positive impact though! #P12Leaders
My hope is that I inspire others to take risks and hold to an entrepreneurial spirit. I strive to do so through authenticity, clarity, positivity, and coherence. You gotta praise people to success! #P12Leaders
Nope... 3! #pechat#learnlap#P12Leaders I tend to find more and more chats each week.. I then ask myself where my time went.. Haha I took 2 weeks off so I had to fire back tonight.

@lmwppeh, @TeacherRunner42, @PhysedNow, @PhysEdDepot
A5: It impacts your colleagues by impacting culture - either positively or negatively. We should all strive to contribute to a positive culture. #P12Leaders
Q6: I believe healthy bodies fuel healthy minds. So my stretch goal is to lose 100 lbs this year. I’m down 20. So 80 to go. That’s the change I’m willing to make. #P12Leaders
Q5: Back in my teaching days, my firm stand for authenticity inside & outside of my classroom made me the "odd man out" at times. However, I've never been one to fit in.😏#P12Leaders
A5: My colleagues are learning alongside me. Many have joined twitter, we are doing a book study, have planned collaboration time 2x per month. The Ts in our building know that I expect change and accept risk-taking as the norm! #P12Leaders
A5: Because I am honest and diligent, people either love me or hate me. There is usually no middle. Some I inspire, and some shy away from me and spread stupid gossip, but either way, I stay true to me #P12Leaders
A6-
Learn to pick my battles. Not ever fight is my fight.
Smile more often.
Spend less time on the minutiae that the moment says is important, but in reality are just time sucks.
#P12Leaders
A6: Change is about creating new opportunities each day. Instead of worrying about what can go wrong, let's get excited about what might go right. #KidsDeserveIt#P12Leaders
A6. I am willing to turn what others deem a highly successful (based on test scores) school on its head because it’s what is best for kids and needed for our future. We WILL close achievement and opportunity gaps. #SelfDirectedLearning#P12Leaders
Learn to share the load - Sometimes it’s hard for me to trust people with the things I care about. It is important that i spend the time to build relationships with the people around me who are in this with the same goals in mind #P12Leaders
A big shout out to my Georgetown College students who are engaged in the chat tonight. Be sure to follow some new people and continue making connections. #P12Leaders
A6: I’m open to paradigm shifts-which I think has quite a bit of irony when stated. If we are willing to give up control at times, we are better able to serve the greater good and realize the #UnmappedPotential#P12Leaders
The first tough decision was hard, but I did not waver. Still remember and stand behind it. I was serving as an interim principal and I knew that I had it in me to go forward into leadership. #P12Leaders
A7. I will walk in each classroom and compliment a teacher on what he/she is doing to help us reach our goals. I’ll even do it in front of the students. #P12Leaders
Yep. I remember mine too. Also the first "You're not coming back" conversation when I was a flightline super at UPS. Hard, but the team needed it. We can't shy from them, and no amount of roleplaying in the prep program prepares us for when it comes. #P12leaders
A7: allow them to fail. Speak kind words into our most difficult students. Ask students to teach me something they are good at. Have conversations. Spend lunch sitting with kids. #P12Leaders
A7 - It starts with a smile and a greeting at the door and translates in and out of the classroom - being visible and engaging in positive conversations helps build the relationship! #P12Leaders
Q6: I would change my tendency to be prideful in thinking I have all the answers. I'm still learning as an educator, and it's important for me to stay humble. That will make me an even better example to my students.#P12Leaders
a7- Its the doldrums of February. So yesterday in my weekly report I sent out 25 things we can all do to make this month enjoyable and keep our culture strong. For my part, i'll model as many of the 25 as I can.
#p12leaders
A7: Tomorrow signals the start of a new day...a new beginning and new opportunities to make a difference in the life of a child. Get there early tomorrow and #BeTheOne. #P12Leaders
Q7 - smile at them, give them feedback, show passion towards all they do, build a rapport, convenience them that each mistake is a stepping stone to success. You is better to try and fail than fail to try. As long as you try, you are in the right direction #P12Leaders
A7: Well, tomorrow we don't have school because it's #PancakeDay haha! So I guess on WEDNESDAY... I could intentionally seek out newer teachers and encourage them. We have some pretty awesome first-years! #P12Leaders
A7: I will continue to do what I do on a daily basis. I go to work everyday with the hope of showing others (students and staff) their potential. This is through encouragement and just being a good listener. #P12Leaders
Sean here from NC, Principal and Author, and I wanted to send a huge, quick shoutout to @PPrincipals.They have enlightened and supported me and so many others in our PLN. Truly reasons to #CelebrateMonday! #UnMappedED#P12Leaders
Q7: Tell them I believe in them and in their potential. We need to be their biggest cheerleader. If we aren't, we are in the wrong position as an educational leader! #p12leaders
It scares some teachers because still, practice, and test prep resulted in high scores, and they are afraid to #DoSomething different. That’s why communicating our vision is so important. #P12Leaders
Q7: Currently, I'm a homeschool mom. I like to point out specific ways daily that my son has impressed me through learning. The smile on his face is priceless. #P12Leaders
A1: One big, bold belief that guides my work as an educator is education means freedom. The better educated our students are, the bigger their world becomes! #P12Leaders
Q7: I’m still in the classroom currently, so I will tell the little people in my room how awesome they are and take every opportunity to complement them on their learning and their character. #P12Leaders
Woah time flies when you are intrigued. Thanks to all the facilitators in tonights chats. #P12Leaders#pechat#learnlap. I have to depart, lot to do still before the night fades away. Remember - you control the outcome #makeAdifference all she wrote for tonight. Ciao!
A BIG Thank You to our special guests tonight - @PPrincipals. Two amazing leaders that continue to push our thinking as school leaders. Great Job! #P12Leaders
Glad to be in your band and I am your fan. Thanks for being that compass on the map for leadership, support and change. #P12Leaders#CelebrateMonday#UnMappedED
A2: By challenging them to take lessons/content further and deeper rather than wider. By making sure learners truly understand the relevance behind the lesson. #P12Leaders
