A1: Formative assessment is the eyes, ears & the understanding we have of our kids. Without it, we have no map to guide us toward their every day needs. #TXed
A1 to make sure Learning is on track! Are the Ss understanding, do we need to slow down, speed up? Gauge the progress (or lack thereof) as you go #txed
A1: Formative instruction helps guide you in real-time to make the greatest impact on student learning. If you don't know where you are, where will you go? #TXED
Because it provides instant feedback for the teacher to make their teaching better. Which in turn, should help the learner learn better. Afterall, its always about the learning, not the teaching. #txed
A1. I am going to UT Tyler studying music ed. Even in music education I believe a formative test can tell you what the students understand about the music and make sure they are playing the music correctly

Unfortunately, my attention is divided trying to organize for my staff to attend the funeral of one of our students who tragically passed away on Thanksgiving Day. Its been a rough few days. #TXED
A2: Not in class but recently learned a new one...pinch cards! Simple, easy, love! Exit tickets are a classic and wonderful! Show me understanding w/fingers (1-none - 5-expert) #TXed
A2. Exit slip questions like what was something you learned today that you didn’t already know? What’s something you aren’t sure about from today’s lesson?#txed
A1: without formative assessment, you really don't know if the hour you just spent teaching anconcept dis anything at all. Not doing formative assessments is a sure way to know you will probably end up re-teaching a concept. #TXED
A2: Formative assessments can be as easy as thumbs up or thumbs down. I’ve been seeing an increase in using this strategy on my campus! Exciting!! #txed
A2 I’ve done low tech and with tech exit tickets, 3-2-1 for what Ss learned/still have ? Over, parking lot for stickies, kahoot, show me what you know, and just an open ended question on paper. #TXed
I love integrating technology for this. So many quick, easy, and engaging tools. Pluckers, Kahoots, exit tickets, quick writes, quick write summaries, turn and talks, think-pair-shares, and the lists go on. #txed

A2 exit ticket and quick writes/ quick write summaries, turn and talks are almost a daily thing in my classroom, excited to try out the new pinch card idea #txed
A3-Saw a teacher once give the students a notecard to answer a question. Collected notecards, looked over and pulled students into a small group that needed extra attention #TXed
So for example we did Fact vs Myth about dyslexia facts in a workshop. Fold paper vertically, on top write “fact” bottom write “myth” do that on both sides of fold. Questions were asked, hold paper in air and pinch your response. #txed
Got this total response signal idea from Sheltered Instruction training:
1 finger - I am only beginning
2 fingers - I could use more practice
3 fingers - I need some help.
4 fingers - I can do it alone.
5 fingers - I know it so well I could explain it to anyone
#TXED@Seidlitz_Ed
Easy to implement in so many ways and you know top of card is one answer bottom is the other - quick sweep shows you answers. So many ways to incorporate in so many areas! #txed
A3- Obviously the first time didn’t work. Change my approach, change the intensity, change the questioning, keep scaffolding until there’s a bridge for the gap. #TXed

Create questions/ticket out on label stickers to easily place into Ss notebook. Easy to keep Ss working at their own pace & use time efficiently! #DitchWG#smallgroupisthebestgroup@WEinKaty
A2. In music ed. it is really common for band directors to test their students by giving them playing tests where the students play the music and the directors judge them on how well they played. #TXed#ed4338

A4: This is a tough question for me. It will depend on the subject/content to determine where you go from there. Math can be creating Qs, etc. Try to dig deeper into it. #txed
A3: Yes!!! Blended learning is a great way to differentiate. Also intentionally crafted choice boards and #hyperdocs are useful for differentiation. Lots of work upfront but very useful (especially for next year!😀) #txed
A3 #TXED. I fear this is where the largest problems are... we have many ways to formatively assess but we struggle to ensure ALL students are supported in their learning ... it takes being very intentional in your classroom
Everyone must get better at this with the new proposed accountability system. Every child has to move. Even those who master content and concepts. #TxEd
A4 independent learning stations; apply higher order thinking skills beyond the base skill; provide application of the skills if appropriate, especially real world #TXed
A4. With a project or something where the students have to produce or make something, they can have the opportunity to add more fun, frills, or embellishments to their work. These students also like to teach their peers these little extras, too. It adds some incentive. #txed
A4 this is something that I am working on, I let those sts choose how they want to their extend learning. Many of my students are in to vlogging” and share what they are working on using seesaw #txed

A4 My Kids love choice boards for extension activities- I give a list of things to choose from (google slides, helping a friend, creating new questions, etc) and they get the choice! #TXed
I also fear that sometimes we get so engrossed in the assessments we leave no time for instruction or re-teach. Make sure these assessments are quick hitting. No need for lenghty tests all the time. #txed

A4: Lt the students take charge of extensions, they will find ways to share that you may not have ever guessed were possible, especially if they can incorporate there own interests into it. #txed

Choice boards can also work well here. Give them options on what they can create, but don't let them choose the same option each time. Growth and experience. #txed
Before you decide this, you need to know what caused the mistake in the first place. Bad teaching? Was delivery? Wrong concept? How it was tested? Was it presented to the depth and complexity it was tested in? So many questions to answer before you can tackle it. #txed

A5. No, I do not think so because assessments are tools for teachers to see how they are doing, it is not to be used against the student’s grade. #txed
Only works if the problem is just a little more practice. What if there is another cause for the misconception or misunderstanding? #txed. #ilovehowwecanchallengeeachother
A5. Common assessments can count for a grade, but they shouldn't kill an average just with that one assessment. Students shouldn't have to recover for the rest of the grading period over 1 poor common assessment. #txed
Or student reflection. Conferencing with kids about why they made mistakes helps them avoid them in the future. "Remember when you missed that one and how you fixed it?" #txed
I also fear that sometimes we get so engrossed in the assessments we leave no time for instruction or re-teach. Make sure these assessments are quick hitting. No need for lenghty tests all the time. #txed
A5 A tough question. I ask what the purpose is of the assessment. If it’s a final, yes. If it’s a process and a check in, no. Feedback is more valuable. #TXED
If your assessment can tell you where the problem lies, small groups can still be successful. Pair Ss who are faltering at the same location so your reteach is more effective. #txed
Grade level decision. But you have to ask yourself what are you after? And does this assessment really give me the info I need to know about how my kids learned the concept. Assessments can measure both the teaching and the learning. Be Careful!!! #txed
A5 we have to grade things. It is what it is. BUT if you are checking understanding to see how well you taught something that day and how much more they need, don’t hold that against THEM. #TXed
A5: Depends on the way you define a common assessment. Our district assessments are not grades but our campus common assessments are grades. How closely are the teachers planning and working together? #txed
A5: No. Common assessments should be a tool used for pacing, teacher feedback, and providing targeted interventions. Also, the assessment cycle should not be dictated by when "grades are due" or some other arbitrary preset date.
#TXED
A6: Start small and limit what you are assessing. Pick one topic. If you try to assess multiple things then you can get lost as to where the real issue lies. #txed
A6 Be creative. Keep it simple but gritty. Have fun with them. Use the data! If you take the time to do one, take the time to use it to guide your instructional gaps. #TXed
A6 Start Small. If you want to try a tech based one, try it a few times before giving up. See other teachers in action and what works with their class. #txed
A6: Jump in, there is no better way to start than to just give it a go. Start with a question or two along the way and add options as you learn more. #txed
A6 just do it! They should be short and simple to implement while providing you useful and purposeful feedback! Pick a few to start and once you’re comfortable add in another and build your toolkit! If one doesn’t work for you chunk it and try something different #TXED
Know what your hunting after? Improvements for you or improvements for your students. One can grow students. The other can grow you to grow your students. #Txed
USE THE DATA!!!! YES!!! Too many times I hear of taking the assessment and then looking at the data 2 weeks later in a meeting. What good does that do? #toolate#txed

A6 start your assessments small, with a couple go-to old school options. Add in a couple favorite tech tools. Then sprinkle in more for variety as you go! Your teacher tool kit will get better over time! #txed
A5: Formative assessments should be more valuable for Ts to make adjustments so that summative results are better. Worth more than a punitive grade. #txed

A6 Use formative assessments to drive your instruction and help identify individual student understanding.. take time to individualize, differentiate, etc according to what your assessments tell you.. put student learning first #TXED
