GOING to put attending an #AFCA conference on my bucket list, but uber-grateful for the #hogfbchat fraternity

Ben Palmer. Co-OC at Calvary (Shreveport, LA). Just got moved from WRs to coach OL for 2018 (dream come true) I’m officially the world’s scrawniest OL coach now. #hogfbchat
A1: Love it! Shows how a team of guys had to work together to reach a common goal. Shows the epitome of OL play. The OL is the team, draped in anonymity.. #hogfbchat
A1) Love it. The OL is the ultimate team within the greatest team game & the whole unit should be rewarded. Plus, the OL wouldn’t have it any other way. #hogfbchat
A1: I think any award that recognizes the OL as a unit and looks like an OL kind of award is good. We don’t need awards but they are well deserved and well earned
#hogfbchat
a1 #hogfbchat think it's awesome and that people like @BigDuke50 & @AaronTaylorCFB do a tremendous job honoring the top unit. We preach the necessity of the unit, this award totally underlines the fact
A1: I love it! Finally awards the unit instead of an individual. It’s gotten to be the Heisman for fat dudes. Plus @BigDuke50 is involved and he’s a good dude! #hogfbchat
Sorry I’m late, Gents! Feeling under the weather and watching game. Coach Kevin Sabo. Owner/Operator of the best damn line company is Illinois. #FISTfootball#hogfbchat
A1. It's a great award. I coached with him for a few years at the end of his career at a local HS. Got his start in our city as a coach. Still has family here, son coached with us as well. Always good stories when I see him. #hogfbchat
a1 #hogfbchat think it's awesome and that people like @BigDuke50 & @AaronTaylorCFB do a tremendous job honoring the top unit. We preach the necessity of the unit, this award totally underlines the fact
A1: I feel like any award that recognizes an entire unit of OL is a great thing. And it’s clearly voted on and looked after by people that know what they are talking about. #hogfbchat
A1: I think it’s awesome that more people are recognizing what it takes to be successful in football. This award proves it. Plus the first time given went to the Iowa oline. Go Hawks! #hogfbchat
A1: My favorite award, love it! As coaches we always stress the importance of being ONE unit. It’s great to see the best group in the nation be recognized! #hogfbchat
A1 - Definitely appreciate any award that recognizes a unit over the individual. Individual accolades can be a byproduct of team success, but it’s team success that should be the goal #hogfbchat
A1: Fantastic Unit award! No other group on a team like the offensive line! The best players don’t always make the best Unit! Need all the pieces to fit together perfectly to win... #hogfbchat
A1: You are kidding yourself if you don’t think OL is the best unit in football. Teams offensive success is based on how well their OL plays! #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat Q1 A1 I think it’s perfect. Its great to recognize a unit and not just an individual. Especially with OL play where the group effort outweighs a star effort. The browns and Joe Thomas are a good example of one all time great doesn’t outweigh a sound unit.
A1: I love it! Finally awards the unit instead of an individual. It’s gotten to be the Heisman for fat dudes. Plus @BigDuke50 is involved and he’s a good dude! #hogfbchat
A1: 5 (sometimes more) dudes have to be on the SAME page upfront in order for a play to work. I feel like the best way to show love to the OL is by recognizing all of them. Great award. #hogfbchat
A1. Cont when I say coached with was more like stood there petrified to say anything out if fear for my life and took copious mental notes on everything he said. #hogfbchat
A1: great recognition of the most under appreciated position. Even the size of the trophy is a perfect fit. Draws attention and takes up space. Just like any big guy walking into a room. #hogfbchat
A1: Love it! ".. recognizes the toughest, most physical offensive line in the country.." Rewards - brings recognition to the entire unit!
Then there's the Ron Swanson view... #hogfbchat
Love it! Especially knowing how much analysis & dissection teeny into it. Plus, OL is so much about unit production vs. individual dominance. Love the best UNIT acknowledgement. Really wish it was replicable in HS for our league. Or at least our section #CIFLACS#hogfbchat
A2: loaded question, all 4 run some version of IZ which I love. I love the Q runs Bama uses almost like a single wing team. UGA runs OZ zone or “stretch” zone as good as anybody. I’m a homer so I love Clemson’s gap schemes as well, particularly belly weak with the Q #hogfbchat
A2: Alabama knows they have better players than everyone. They are simple and let their players abilities do the work. Line up and impose your will. #hogfbchat
A2: I really enjoyed what Oklahoma did, I like good RPOs, screen game from spread looks all while having the ability to run the ball effectively #hogfbchat
A2: If I can’t say Wisconsin, I gotta go with the Sooners. Those guys DOMINATED dudes all year long. @CoachGrayvold has some great all-22 film on them! #hogfbchat
Q2 - I’ve always been a big Mumme/Leach supporter, and @LincolnRiley runs the closest thing to a true Air Raid our of the four. That being said, hard to stop a true pro style offense run well like UGA #hogfbchat
A2) Love watching UGA run their zone scheme but I also thought how OU was packaging counter trey with various looks on the backside was a great concept #hogfbchat
Q2 - I’ve always been a big Mumme/Leach supporter, and @LincolnRiley runs the closest thing to a true Air Raid out of the four. That being said, hard to stop a true pro style offense run well like UGA #hogfbchat
A2 - I’ve always been a big Mumme/Leach supporter, and @LincolnRiley runs the closest thing to a true Air Raid our of the four. That being said, hard to stop a true pro style offense run well like UGA #hogfbchat
A2: really love teams that utilize an H-back, as well as run a lot of power/counter (Q). Would have to say Oklahoma and Clemson (pre Bama annihilation) are who I like to watch. #hogfbchat
A2: Clemson’s RPO game is incredible. The way they use motion to pit teams in conflict with their dual threats is fun to watch. The stuff they did with Watson last year is a coaches dream. #Hogfbchat
A1: #hogfbchat Love the award. I especially love that they honor an entire unit vs individual players. As much as the studs deserve to be noticed, the group success is critical to overall team success.
I’ve loved watching Bama because of all the things they do with their quarterback and all the motions really creates some great schemes upfront #hogfbchat
A2: I’m rescinding my answer and answering again. I love Bama’s power. I love Georgia’s zone. We run something similar, and we mix a GT Counter in with it. I like OU’s pace. #hogfbchat
A2: I love the PA pass game the Sooners run. Also a huge fan of the ctr variations they run. Love QB run game so that aspect of Bama & Clemson is awesome! #hogfbchat
All four teams do a great job of playing to the strengths of their personnel. They execute at a high level because they put guys in a position to be successful. #hogfbchat
All four teams do a great job of playing to the strengths of their personnel. They execute at a high level because they put guys in a position to be successful. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat This is a tough one. So few of them work to aid the program & program goals. In addition I have seen plenty of players go to outside help in poor shape in comparison to peers who work within the program
A3: for every one really legit trainer trying to help your student athletes, there are at least 5 who just want money, recognition or claiming work of others. #hogfbchat
Q3: I love when my players go to trainers. There are some great ones out there. Good for the kids to hear other voices and great to learn from these trainers. #hogfbchat
A3: As long as the "trainer" is in it for the right reasons and not scamming 💰💰💰. If they are good people and love to coach, and develop young men, I'm all for it! #hogfbchat
A3: Well, I’m kind of biased, but I like them. The nice thing about training O/D line is that most of our technique is universal. But I always try to figure out what technique the kids’ coaches teach and stick with it. And I will NEVER bash something I don’t agree with #hogfbchat
A3: We're a low-income school but I think we could do better to outreach & bring in qualified professionals. Ultimately, you have to be helping our athletes at all times (physically/mentally/emotionally) to provide value to our program. If not, no thanks. #hogfbchat
A3: I personally don't have a huge problem with them as long as it is supplemental to our own program. If u only work during ath period, then ur avg. I love when guys want to do more on their own time. #hogfbchat
A3) such a tough question b/c I’m that guy. But I think everything depends on the “who.” Who is that person training the athlete & why are they training them. #hogfbchat
A4) Love this question. I’m all for kids getting extra work in if they can afford it. Can’t let your ego as there coach get in the way of the player being the best they can be. As long as the trainer is knowledgeable and works w/ players schedule #hogfbchat
A3 - will never fault a student-athlete for wanting to get better, but hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. Honestly I’d rather them be in our off-season program or play a complimentary second sport #hogfbchat
A3. Gotta be careful of outside voices but if people are working to get better and u aren’t fulfilling their needs they will find someone that does #hogfbchat
A3 - One of the biggest advantages of off season workouts is the bond / trust formed through competition and hard work with one another. Extremely important to be with team. #hogfbchat
A3) Very few I trust. I want to meet or know someone who knows them before my guys work with them.
My old program is very close to a speed trainer, and a private kicking coach, so I cannot say they aren't a great resource if properly vetted
#hogfbchat
A3: I feel a similar way about football trainers to local gyms especially ones who make players believe that they don’t need to participate in team activities because they workout with a trainer. To create a culture and chemistry with teammates you have to be around #hogfbchat
A3: mixed feelings there can be benefits if they are in line with our program and truly are for the athletes best interest but would much rather keep it all in house #hogfbchat
A3) such a tough question b/c I’m that guy. But I think everything depends on the “who.” Who is that person training the athlete & why are they training them. #hogfbchat
A3 Bonus: I will also tell a kid to leave my session if he hasn’t been in the weight room with his team, and I will tell them to leave if they are failing classes. Their schoolwork and team are number one, we are number 2. #hogfbchat
A3: Credibility is a must in my opinion! @Just_JD38 does a great job in Central Oklahoma! He’s played at Oklahoma and in the NFL. I trust him fully! #hogfbchat
A3) Obviously there are some knowledgeable and great guys and organizations out there that can provide supplemental training for your athletes. As long as it doesn’t go against what you’re teaching your kids it could be good #hogfbchat
A3) Got to be honest. Not a fan. Most trainers I know will work with a kid for one day then claim responsibility for the kid's success while giving none of the credit to the kid's coaches. #hogfbchat
A3: Hasn't been a real issue for my kids, but I'm generally sceptical a) about cost, b) credentials, & c) intentions of "gurus" & experts. Having said that, I still have a lot to learn & certainly am interested in anything that can offer development that I can't. #hogfbchat
A3: we have our weight room after school, @CoachSPDef does a great job running it. Over the last few years guys have really done a great job of buying in! No need for “football specialist trainers.” #hogfbchat
A3. The S&C guy with plenty of experience and credentials and building a team culture in the offseason I am not a huge fan. I always want to learn, so I will talk, but do what your team is doing if it’s a legit program. #hogfbchat
A3. If it's a supplement to team stuff in off season sure why not. If they are full time with them and not participating in team stuff then it gets dicey. No idea what they are being told or what ideas are put into their heads. #hogfbchat
A3pt2: #hogfbchat I get frustrated when trainers inflate kids view of themselves. Not fair to the kid who is DII-DIII yet the guy he's paying says he's DI.
A3: I know players are going to use them. I want my guys to work with the team, be coachable and perform the task at the position we feel best helps the team. If you're going to use them in the summer, show up ready to go in the fall. #hogfbchat
A3: If I (or another coach on staff) know them and they're willing to work w/us, augmenting the athlete's skills great! If they're working IN PLACE of the Team's off season program, not so great. #hogfbchat
I think there are some good ones who genuinely care about the kids, just like there are some bad ones. My thing is,if a kid wants to work extra, but his coach won’t work extra on wkends and nights, what’s he suppose to do? Yet that coach will complain about the trainers #hogfbchat
Any coach worth their weight is developing functional athleticism throughout the season regardless of sport. May not be traditional "strength" that is emphasized in FB, but the additional value outweighs what strength gains might be made otherwise. #hogfbchat
A3: I have zero problem with kids getting extra work... That being said, these “trainers” that are SELLING D1 dreams to JV C teamers are the guys I have issues with. Headaches from parents / locker room problems from the kids. #hogfbchat
A3: I am against it, I believe it can create division and mistrust within the program. I believe in working out with your teammates and coaches.. if you want extra, ask me and I'll give it to you! #hogfbchat
However those places that teach technique should also be supplemental to what you are teaching your players. You’re gonna be the one with the kid on Friday nights so he must be able to take coaching from you #hogfbchat
a4 #hogfbchat Continuing the #SKAQ work we already started. I also enjoy going to other sports/events, but from a strictly football perspective it's spending time with my OL crew & continuing our work
A2: I like Georgia’s distribution of touches with 3 very talented backs. I also really like the way they have handled a freshman qb and not overloaded him with overly complex schemes (looking at you Jimbo) #hogfbchat
A4 Continuing to build relationships with fellow coaches, help out as many coaches as I can, speaking at dry ridge clinic, finding a great opportunity #hogfbchat
A4: Clinic Season! Meeting coaches and expanding my knowledge for the game! Always learning can’t stress that enough along with self evaluation. Never get complacent, always mastering the craft! #hogfbchat
A4: Love clinic season. Also love just sitting with coaches and talking about what we want to change/install/fix for the upcoming season and hearing their whys and hows #hogfbchat
A4: relationship building hands down. Love making connections with kids outside of FB. Also, love seeing the pride the kids take in making growth. #hogfbchat
A4: Looking forward to continue to reflect/develop as a program, organizationally and as overall athletes, to see improvements from anyone involved in our program. #hogfbchat
A3) Not all are bad, but I hate seeing kids Twitter bios with Explode 7on7 #8 and then his high school listed 2nd. Some of these guys try to make the kids support them first. #hogfbchat
A3: Supplemental to Team workouts but can be beneficial in many ways. One area would be better facilities, another could involve knowledge of training regimen, not always a bad thing.
#hogfbchat
A4: I also am our head track coach. Seeing a lot of our players in a different scenario allows me to learn better ways on how to get the most out of them. #hogfbchat
A4 clinics, meeting new coaches, going to talk ball with some guys at their schools, as a coach you tell your players you win in the offseason, have to believe it yourself in your craft as well #hogfbchat
A4: After a very painful bowl loss and taking 4 weeks off, I'm looking forward most to getting back in the weight room and working w/my dudes. The family-brotherhood aspect of coaching is what I enjoy cultivating in the off season #hogfbchat
A4) Spending as much time with my wife and daughter as I can until the next season comes around. What can I say? I love my family. #hogfbchat#ihopemywifereadsthis
A4: going to clinics and learning as much as I can for any coach I can. As well as preparing for my wife and I's first child! #hogfbchat#HowdoIGameplanForThat
A4) excited to see my guys grow and lead in offseason! Also looking forward to learning and talking football. Offseason is a great time for me to get to sit back a little, learn and grow as a coach. #hogfbchat
Honestly, having some time to get back in the gym myself. Spending more time with my wife. Building better relationships with everyone in our program - top down. Then obviously clinics / talking ball with anyone who also has a grease pen handy. #hogfbchat
A4: With being my 2nd year at this school continue developing the athletes that were freshmen and sophomores when I atrived to see how much progress they've made. Also continue building relationships with the athletes #hogfbchat#mtzmade#mtzpower
A4: retooling and fixing some of the things that plagued us up front this past season. Looking forward to working with the younger guys to help them become better players. #hogfbchat
A4: Looking forward to spreading my love for football on our kids on a daily basis, getting them to believing hard work is "cool", getting them to buy in to the process. Year one is over so we are sharpening the tools now.. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat Clinic time is excellent but it has to have a good line up of speakers who are willing to share. Too often guys see an opponent in the front row & say next to nothing
A4: “Words of wisdom if you don’t have a desire to continuously learn in this ever evolving game, go sell insurance! Retire!” Old coach told me that! #hogfbchat
A4: Honestly, having some time to get back in the gym myself. Spending more time with my wife. Building better relationships with everyone in our program - top down. Then obviously clinics / talking ball with anyone who also has a grease pen handy. #hogfbchat
Any coaches in the Atlanta area give this guy a look, @CoachRJLuke Great coach. Great trainer. Has major NCAA and NFL experience. Plus the man knows Football! #hogfbchat
A4: getting back w/the players and coaches to prepare for the 2018 season. Love meeting w/coaches & seeing what new ideas we could add or a better way of doing things #hogfbchat
A4: clinic season and spring ball. Sean Lewis bringing the Briles Offense to Kent state is great with it only being 4 hours away. Great chance to learn. Our Coaches association clinic is next week which I can’t wait for. Great time and incredible networking opportunity #hogfbchat
A4 - we opened a brand new school this year. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do after a full year of off-season, summer and fall camps, etc #hogfbchat
Q3/A3: I’ve coached HS 🏈 for over 20 years now, & unfortunately (even though there ARE some very qualified/high character individuals), I think the market is becoming saturated w/ people looking to make quick 💵, not caring about anyone’s future, other than their own!
#hogfbchat I LOVE that through both the Glazier site & through the awesome work @OLineWorld65 does I can still do a ton of learning if the schedule and/or lineup at the clinic isn't ideal
A4) Looking to further my knowledge and understanding about our great game. Gonna spend a little more time focusing on the defensive side of the ball this off season to be better prepared to attack different schemes in the future. Heading to Glazier in ATL Jan 19! #hogfbchat
A4: I most look forward to getting better as a football coach whether it’s listening to podcast, watching videos, or even chats on twitter😉. I also run the weight program so seeing our guys get stronger and improve mobility. #hogfbchat
A3 Part 1: What bothers me the most is the mentality of parents these days. It’s like they believe that because they are paying someone, whatever they say must be right. Therefore whatever the HS coach says must be wrong. It’s really weird. #hogfbchat
Bonus Answer @OLcoachdub Encourage them! Very few players will go on and continue, statistically. They get 1 shot at high school. Maximize it. Starting spots are earned in the weight room(culture). If they're never there and your culture stresses this.... well.....
#hogfbchat
Big thanks to @CoachDingus for always being the best cohost! And we are still looking for active sponsorships if anybody is interested. Great exposure for your product! #hogfbchat
For those who are interested! My clinic list. @Ofbca Winter Clinic 1/11-12 Flexbone Clinic 2/2-3, DFW Glazier, Red River Glazier and the #hogfbchat Clinic in March 9 in Memphis!
Still think you get the most out of a speaker when he’s from out of the state/region. If he says, “I’ll give you everything, just don’t put it on CoachHuey” then you know it’s going to be good. #hogfbchat
As always, if you have any questions or topics you want discussed on the chat, please don’t hesitate to DM myself or @CoachDingus with those ideas #hogfbchat
A3. If it's a supplement to team stuff in off season sure why not. If they are full time with them and not participating in team stuff then it gets dicey. No idea what they are being told or what ideas are put into their heads. #hogfbchat
And don’t forget to mark your calendars for the second annual #hogfbchat clinic at @RhodesFootball! March 10th in Memphis! Registration should open soon. Can’t wait to see you all there!
No question at all. I've seen it at both ends of the spectrum...out of state guys who let it fly...and in-state guys who tell you next to nothing...as if the opponent sitting there hadn't seen their schemes every year for the last 10 #hogfbchat
A3 Part 2: That being said...these damn speed ladder praising, agility hurdle touting, parachute pulling, catch phrase spamming parasites that keep selling average HS football players unrealistic D1 pipe dreams for $20 an hour can take a long walk off a short pier. #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachShiffman: And like that it’s over! Thank you all for your multi tasking participation tonight! We wouldn’t be here without you guy! #hogfbchat#fasterhouronTwitter#GoGo#AllGasNoBrakes
I’ve been your cohost Tony Shiffman. Enjoy the second half of the #CFBNationalChampionship#hogfbchat we will see you all next Monday at 8pm CST! Peace Out!
A3: Offensive Line is a special position. One that has requires a specific skill set. If you have a performance coach who is qualified for the position, has a true passion for development and understands its a supplemental session, then I approve #hogfbchat#justwaitonit
A3 Part 3: While they are it they can bring the traveling All-Star, All-American, “Nationally Ranked”, “Invitation Only” (as long as the check clears) 7on7 coaches who want an excuse to sell kids dreams of grandeur to recruit other schools best players with them.
#hogfbchat
A4: Putting the puzzle pieces together for Spring. Every year brings new challenges with personnel. Seeing kids develop/grow is an awesome thing. IMO, if you’re doing it right, the offseason is where you build the relationships you’ll need to survive the long season. #hogfbchat
A4: Developing the players/program. These are a fun 7 months of change and development for them, whether or not they play another sport. A lot of fundamentals and technique install for young and returning players. It’s time for the the 2018 season! #HOGFBCHAT
A1: great concept. Award the unit. Such an important set of people. We have a motto: “if you don’t have an O-Line, you don’t have an offense and you’ll have a hurt QB” #HOGFBCHAT
Coach I absolutely agree! I love the Trench Mafia guys! You guys do work! #hogfbchat I was referring to guys who have zero credibility! No problems with guys who are credible.
