awesome! glad you're here tonight! If the chat slows down tonight, that's when you tell stories
-
-
-
there is no perfect "drill". I believe in training the fundamentals I want to see when I turn on the team / game film.
-
Thank you to everybody checking in! I am so glad you all took time to be here! Enjoy and take advantage of this opportunity!
-

-
Yes! Don't just do drills because you've "always done it that way." Have a purpose for everything
-
Sam Spencer OC/QB/WR (NC)
-
so you'll just rotate through the ones you like and the ones you feel your group responds too the best?
-
I believe in a 2 prong progression of training.
1. The Skill being trained
2. The amount of people in the "drill"
-
Any Wing-T coaches who I;m not following??? LET ME KNOW!
-
My take on drills if you are going to do a drill make sure it correlates to something on field https://t.co/yi7kogrqB2
-

-
-
Wakley Bergner. Passing game coordinator/QB Coach. Marlow, Ok.
-
Your drills should come from game film. Make it realistic to game. Hate hitting objects that don't move as OL!
-
In agreement with my buddy I don't like drills for the sake of drills. Every drill in my drill bank has a purpose
-
what fundamentals do you spend the most time correcting for kids transitioning from HS to college?
-
Each drill should have importance to that day's install https://t.co/q7kU31CFE1

In agreement with my buddy I don't like drills for the sake of drills. Every drill in my drill bank has a purpose
-
-
19 states and 2 countries on right now - NorthEast we're behind!
-
How do you design your drills with the number of people involved? I will have about 30 OL (all levels) this fall
-
you're telling me things I already know haha
-
after you have your skill list work them 1 vs 1
V air
V sled (if applies)
V hand shield
V static body
V moving body
-
first, make a full list of all the blocks that your offense uses. Not every offense uses every block.
-
-
that is one side of the progression. The other side is
Man vs man
Pods or half line
Full line
-
how much contact do you like to have at practice with your linemen? Do they hit each other or just dummies?
-
Drilling my QBs, focus building muscle memory- throwing, reading option, carrying out fakes, all at game speed
-
I also like combining drills for the sake of specificity and efficiency. Pulls worked with down block drills and etc
-
Jeff Leonard, DC somewhere in Ohio. Just here to spy on O-line tactics!
-
if I don't see the skills in team, there is a disconnect from vs air to live bullets. I need to reevaluate the link in the chain
-
I love this. This has been added to my planning https://t.co/VSWdB6yHgY

-
Practice with a purpose. Drills should correct a problem or correlate with the gameplan.
-
Make them COMMUNICATE!!! NOT A GAME FOR THE DEAF up front.Create a enviornment that allows them 2 do this evry period
-
DC at Oaks Christian HS in Southern California
-
btw, it sounds like a fire alarm right now on my phone hahah
-
Can't agree more. Talk/Talk/Talk!
-
-
John Mitchell TE/H-Backs Midwest City HS Midwest City Ok. Sorry I am late fellas.
-
My wife "Are you blowing up? What the hell are you doing? Oh, that's right, twitter chat."
-
Gap away w/kick and Man v Man
-
A question, on IZ, are do you teach a double under and lift or two handed strike and run feet?
-
so I will take 30 steps backwards in order to move forward in terms of skill acquisition I always reset to the basics
-
personally I would want my linemen to hit each other. I feel like dummies can be useful but you're not hitting dummies in games
-
I try to mimic game type situations in drills i.e blitz pickups and pin and pull blocks in our scheme
-
One of my favorite drills is lining up my OL and working run step progression. Drill lead, angle, lateral, drop, pop-it steps.
-
Jeff berk Dayton Ohio. Oline trainer.
-
This is what I've done this past week actually. Now cataloging drills that work those skills
-
so if I have a bunch of guys to train I'll have 2 or 3 guys going rapid fire.
-
If you don't see the skills you practice on film and in games...go back to basics https://t.co/tUGOe9tDUs

holding dummies is like anything else. You have to teach them the proper way to hold a dummy. Dummy holding 101 lol
-
Zach Schneider BGA Franklin Tn - Washington Mo
-
each practice work on run and pass progression. Get it to where they can do it in their sleep.
-
i typically use dummies during the first 3 days of 2 a days or later in the season when we are pretty beat up
-
will you change the drills that works the basics if you don't see them performing in games?
-
A good way to get more efficiency with your skills is to start practice with them. Low speed drills are pre practice.
-
what keys/technique do you work with a reach on stretch/OZ when their man slants inside and he's 1 on 1?
-
Travis Smith, AHC/OC Douglas Co., GA
-
Older kids hate it but it's better to make sure than assume even they get it. Basics win games!
-
We focus on hitting small with OL, We use medicine balls or rice bags instead of shields / dummies so have to hit small target.
-
hopefully that helps, I'm going to try and go back and answer all the ?s
-
I'd rather go slower and teach than train a bad rep. Muscles remember the bad just like the good.
-
we have "limited contact" rules. We define contact as no predetermined winner/loser. So drill time isn't "contact"
-
Make sure you are tagging your questions and comments with We are all learning from each other!

-
teaching guys to hold bags/give scout look must be taught. Helps guys understand what the D is doing
-
gotta walk the fine line... Practicing bad habits a bunch is far worse than slowing down for correction.
-
kids have no idea how important a good scout team is
-
Just like scheme you don't need a ton of blocks. We drill base, reach, zone/gap double, hinge, down, and cut blocks.
-
Matt Caldwell HFC/AD George County HS (MS)
-
nah man they have no clue until they are taught
-
that's great. You are ahead of the curve.
-
I'm going to take two hands and try to lift you to unlock your hips/knees/ankles as I drive https://t.co/fZYZONNrsj
-
-
A question, on IZ, are do you teach a double under and lift or two handed strike and run feet?
-
outside breast to armpit. Strong inside hand to prevent slant or slant call to bring the line over https://t.co/BHfF0ah5mM
-
-
what keys/technique do you work with a reach on stretch/OZ when their man slants inside and he's 1 on 1?
-
During camp I take details notes and determine most pressing thing to work on and find ways to fix it. check for improvement
-
If you arrived late or want to read back through the chat, the archive will be posted later this week! https://t.co/f5lk6qYuf8
-
we gave helmet stickers for scout team player of the week to try and fight that
-
I think we are all in agreement on the importance of knowing how to hold dummies and how much a good look means haha
-
Talk about how you plan practice for the OL each week. How do you develop your plan and each day?
-

-
For sure. It drives what I do that next practice and allows me to say, "Joe, you're steps on zone are off" try this
-
if ur power producing angles are unchained, I can be not as strong & move u. It's manufactured leverage https://t.co/hEitXcNW5C
-
any advice for someone who wants to coach in college. I graduate from A&M in May and love any advice I can get
-
I won't man anything on OZ. I want to be able to collect all movement on the run with the next OL behind https://t.co/M9T5KtldVe
-
-
what keys/technique do you work with a reach on stretch/OZ when their man slants inside and he's 1 on 1?
-
I won't. I'll just reverse the progression. All the way back to v air if need be. https://t.co/RAonQiK5uO
-
-
will you change the drills that works the basics if you don't see them performing in games?
-
Every drill I do is game related or it's something the opponent will do against us on Friday night.
-
yea can I piggyback on that question also haha
-
I call that the "reset" button https://t.co/RAonQiK5uO
-
-
will you change the drills that works the basics if you don't see them performing in games?
-
And that's where we can help with both!
-
especially if it's something that is a glaring issue!
-
do y'all check to make sure that your guy won't be on an island?
-
Vs a slant on zone OL looses some ground, breaks ribs of DL by placing his outside hand just under the pads of the DL.
-
This is great! Go back one step at a time! https://t.co/00wzh5kVGW

-
Do you do EDD's? Regardless of film results, the daily must do drills, boards, fit re-fit, etc...
-
That's perfect. I wish we had hudl when we played. What an awesome piece of tech!
-
I train just like a series. Run, pass, run, pass, screen, etc. I don't spend large blocks on 1 thing https://t.co/JoDSnKTE0G
-
-
Talk about how you plan practice for the OL each week. How do you develop your plan and each day?

-
No question. Kids are spoiled with the technology they have to improve themselves and help the team.
-
how many pass protections do you guys take into a season? Heard another HS coach at a clinic say they have 8
-
used to run this but off Buck Sweep, even bubbled #2 away

I remember sitting in the office w/the cowboy clicker & then having to leave bc ride/person I took home had to go.
-
and for the record, I thought at 8-9 protections he was doing way too much, but that's just my opinion though
-
Typical Wednesday night 🏈 👏🏼
-
-
our run EDD is old school. We will do every run block to the LT/RT. Some times on boards, chutes https://t.co/nrIkDkSNYL
-
-
Do you do EDD's? Regardless of film results, the daily must do drills, boards, fit re-fit, etc...
-
Zone Scenarios: Covered playside, covered backside, uncovered open gap, uncovered closed gap.
-
-
my view on equip is there isn't any of that stuff on the field Fri/Sat. Need to know how to block bodies https://t.co/nrIkDkSNYL
-
-
Do you do EDD's? Regardless of film results, the daily must do drills, boards, fit re-fit, etc...

-
We have run it for years, but we would never have our backside perimeter WR's block. We always RPO the backside

I used to do a ton of drills and I had no idea why. If you can't answer the "why" than bag it. https://t.co/YjwMyA2NxG
-
-
Sometimes as coaches we want a new drill to solve our problems. Answer is strip it down to basics. Love it.
-
there goes Coach Vint with his RPO talk again
-
He needs to come to Cincy, or close, so I can hear him talk ball
-
can also RPO the front side of this. Find frontside defenders who have dual responsibility and use rules against em
-
-
I teach rules. If you follow your rules the front shouldn't matter. I don't want mass memorization. https://t.co/nf09cMM1BM
-
-

you just justified my thinking. I felt like I needed to use the sled more this season but I agree 100%

-

I know this is HS forum, but any advice on block types for 8-10 year olds? Do you believe in rules (GOD, etc)?

Run your BF vertical & read the frontside safety. On backside run slants or stops unless you are reading 3rd level
-
as many as needed. Less is more. They all marry each other. Full slide is just IZ for us. https://t.co/rfjC0hIalU
-
-
how many pass protections do you guys take into a season? Heard another HS coach at a clinic say they have 8

it depends on how many you want in pro & if you are counting play action in it https://t.co/41kBQcMUzs

-
Thanks!was just thinking that watching some film today. With all the RPO stuff, they are becoming 1 in the same
-
We use half-slide, full slide, sprint-out, and a boot protection. All you need.
-
That's good. Stick is a great concept to include with RPO's. Puts backside LB in conflict.
-
everyone do me a favor and ask about the time he went "rogue" https://t.co/6By2rU1zSb
-
-
take it from someone who played for Coach Jones, old school is the greatest drill you could possibly do
-
it seems there's a story to tell...tell us all about the time you went "rogue"!
-

-
-
take it from someone who played for Coach Jones, old school is the greatest drill you could possibly do
-
do you still use the progression drills ? What else have y'all added?
-
MAKE it easy on the O-LINE coaches they shit their pants if the "BOX PICTURE" gets cloudy!!!
BLOCK 5, READ THE 6th or 7th
-
the best Playaction there is is RPO. It's "OL friendly" https://t.co/vS010109KY
-
-
when you play action off of your IZ game do you have your OL know they are fake blocking or have them carry out the IZ block
-
which means he had about 50% of his other passing plays with 7-8 protections but like I say, to each his own
-
No pressure there. Spill it.
