#Edtechchat focuses on Education Technology. Co-founder Tom Murray says #edtechchat "connects us professionally with inspiring educators from all over the world, all of who encourage us to be better every day for the children and families we serve.”
Hello #EdTechChat! Matt from Seattle, full time software dev, part time volunteer CS teacher/teacher trainer. Always enjoy learning from the teachers here :)
Thanks - full disclosure - I have to right our holiday gift guide blog, and I have a great list, but want to make sure I don't miss anything #edtechchat
Tonight is a special night at #edtechchat b/c we’re giving away an Amazon Echo Dot which would be perfect for your random classroom dance parties. All you have to do is...
1-Follow us
2-ReTweet
3- check out our YouTube channel https://t.co/nRG5ZJXlyl
Giveaway ends on Friday
A2: I like both.
Sometimes its better to check things out in person, especially technology. Shopping in your PJ's is pretty great though! #edt5334#edtechchat
A2 - this is a trend that I *hate* has started to take over in Canada too. Friday is not a holiday here... Boxing day. :P But nowadays, online as I hate crowds. #edtechchat
A2 Cyber unless I get to go out shopping with @DrKatrinaKeene#thedream#edtechchat so about the how I met your mother gif. I know but it says that’s the dream.
A2 I like comparison pricing and reading online reviews, so I'd go with Cyber Monday. However, some great online deals start before Thanksgiving! #edtechchat
A2 CyberMonday all the way. I like the mull over my purchases and I just can't do that in a crowd. The elbows to the face are sorta distracting. #edtechchat
They killed Black Friday when they opened stores on Thanksgiving. I used to love the challenge of it. The planning, the plotting. It was extensive #edtechchat

A2: I hate crowds, so Cyber Monday is my favorite, but I do love the atmosphere of people on Black Friday, and getting breakfast with friends after shopping. #tradition#edtechchat
A3 Good #edtech toys have high replayability. That usually means Ss can use many different strategies to lead to multiple outcomes for success. #edtechchat
#edtechchat#edt5334 A good edtech toy should be priced affordably, but also fun. I was at #paxunplugged over the weekend. One panel discussed this. One common failure of ed games is focusing purely on the ed, rather than the "game."
A3 offers a diff way to help Ss learn/practice/create/explore, accessible and has diff choices that meet diverse learner interests and needs #edtechchat
have to run as I have a work phone call coming in soon! #HappyThanksgiving to all my American peeps and anyone else celebrating! See you next week #edtechchat
I am always amazed at the number of edtech "games" that don't allow for failure. If there's no penalty - what's the motivation to get it right? #edtechchat
#edt5334#edtechchat A3: I played #MathBlaster and #ReaderRabbit as a kid. These walked the line very well. Made the games genuinely fun and enjoyable in their own right. Spent a lot of time playing them.
Yes. I'm a huge believer that failure is an essential part of learning. Failure should just not be seen as the end - just part of the process of getting to success. #edtechchat
One of the draws of video games was the failure. Learning from past "mistakes" earned you entry to the next level. We need more of that. #edtechchat#BringBackPitfall
#edtechchat but unfortunately we don't allow kids to fail in life right now in many cases everybody gets a trophy look at the schools that are cancelling valedictorians and salutatorians because it makes the other students feel bad about themselves

Yes. But even worse in some games, they just let you drag things around until you finally manage to drag the "right" one and then congratulate you on your success and update T dashboards to say the S has "mastered" the content. AHHHH #edtechchat
It's official! EVERYONE can restart their Pro+ trial! Try our new Pro+ time-saving features: bookmarking & comment playback. With just the click of a button you can save time. Never search through a video again. #edchat#edtech#k12#teachertips#TeacherPD#ProfDev#edtechchat
I think those middle schoolers realize the second day after when they are going through candy withdrawal...give me the middle schoolers any day #edtechchat
My blog post from last week with my suggestion Tech Toys for Christmas based on interactions I see in our STEAM program https://t.co/z6eWoj4IAp#edtechchat
My friends who struggled the most with uni/grad school, were those who were always told how smart they were, and everything was easy. Once they finally came up against "real life" they didn't know how to cope/deal. #edtechchat

A4: I’ve never tried them. I see 200+ kids and couldn’t figure out how to make it work. However, Amazon prime music unlimited is the best thing I pay for for my classroom! Lol! #edtechchat#welovetodanceandsing
Good or bad I will say this... that this is what we will be seeing in the future. The days of "buying" software and owning if forever was a business model of the past #edtechchat
A4: We pay for some of our teachers who utilize Quizlet extensively. Don't pay for all Ts b/c they don't/won't all use it. Pay for anyone who requests it though. #edtechchat
Durability; ability to create, re-create, and re-create again; price is reasonable; I like buying things for my future engineer that come with the ability to collaborate. My mother-in-law works for Northrop Grumman and always mention how little "people skills" engineers have.
A4 I've advised Ts to put their classroom money into ed subscriptions such as #BrainPop, #IXL, #Kidblog, #Flipgrid, and others rather than workbooks or bulletin board sets. I used these in my classroom and the money was well spent! #edtechchat
I agree about Myst... I had a love / hate relationship with it. I wanted to do well but didn't want to "cheat" by finding the clues from someone else. #edtechchat

A4) I am about to do a class subscription to @WeVideo after the winter break. I was hesitant about a web based video platform, but it really is pretty slick #edtechchat
#edt5334#edtechchat A few of my grad classes have used it. Mostly as a way of producing short summaries of thoughts and content after units, lessons, or chapters.
I liked Powtoon, I used it to create the videos for @Tweechmeapp. A couple of the teachers at my last school used GoAnimate with their students and liked it. #edtechchat
A5: I want an @Ozobot (or two, or five) SO BAD!!!!! I also like the @SpheroEdu star wars bots I just got my hubby a BB-9E for Christmas (yes he's a big kid, lol) #edtechchat
A5 - A bit of a cop-out answer, but really - it's a toy a kid (or you) will play with for more than 2 hours. Preferably one that lasts days/weeks. #edtechchat
#edtechchat#edt5334 I'm not sure completely. But one toy I've got recently and have been raving about lately is this. https://t.co/B2NEM3PBuz
Will be using it to make our wedding invitations. T_T
A5: I am asking for the Star Wars @bloxelsbuilder kit for myself! Ha! I think the Raspberry Pi’s will be on a lot of my students’ lists. They are hooked!! #edtechchat
It is a challenge because I wanted to highlight problem solving and "grit" while not suggesting families spend a lot. Still need to add an intro. #edtechchat
A5.5: I also want a typewriter for my classroom, I know it's super old school but I have some kiddos with OT issues who are learning to type and I would like for them to be able to type while not being on the computer. #edtechchat
A5 I read a few articles on this and I'm intrigued by the robots/dogs/dolls that kids can "code" to move around. I would have loved the Belle doll that you can code to dance. #edtechchathttps://t.co/cYW5JecQXO
A6 Twitter - I am grateful that I can connect with thoughtful edus.
Minecraft - A terrific venue for my Ss to showcase creativity and document learning.
#edtechchat#PLN
#edtechchat#edt5334 Just the general state of communication really. I have a small channel on Youtube where I post some videos up for anyone who might find them useful. Have people from all over the planet tuning in.
Funny with all the sophisticated tech ready for purchasing, yet totally understandable. What's not fun about building something cool that does stuff, too? #edtechchat
A6 Thankful for all the tools that allow my ELLs to contribute their ideas, share their voices, and participate in activities. @MicrosoftEDU Learning Tools @Flipgrid#edtechchat
Thanks, all! I've been looking for a good video creation / editing tool - for a long time, actually. (That's the power of procrastination...) I'll give it a shot. 📽️😀

#edt5334#edtechchat No problem. I've mentioned him in class a few times with a disclaimer, but don't usually don't play videos in class. He's this old grizzled Canadian miner guy. Swears like a sailor, tears things apart and discusses their quality.
A6 I'm thankful for the #edtech and #maker cultures that have been embraced by the education community. Finally letting new, interesting things into our otherwise stoic academic environment! #edtechchat
#edt5334#edtechchat I don't really mind. I post videos of my own lectures to youtube. But I'm not sure about other students' opinions. It's an online class, so I haven't been able to really talk much with them in detail on it.
I'm thankful for all of the classroom teachers who make a difference in their students' lives every single day, with or without technology! #edtechchat
Not a fan of touchbar. And seems like they are getting even *more* expensive vs what you get. But... still prefer Macs to other options so... hoping this one holds out a bit longer ('13) . #edtechchat
I have a 15inch, and with programming and @unity3d word, really don't want a smaller screen. So pushed immediately into most expensive set. #edtechchat
