Reach out to local colleges and tell them that your classroom is always open to observe. Then you can start building relationships with the new candidates. #bfc530

We can let folks know how great it is to work with kids but ultimately the best way to recruit new educators is if the profession is given the respect it deserves by all who currently don’t get it. #bfc530
If there is a shortage than teacher prep needs to be more realistic in the supply-chain in preparing preservice Ts and schools need to support new Ts throughout those first few years more completely. #BFC530
For most- they leave bcs of need for better pay & benefits that will continue. I know connections, relationships, support are critical part of continuing but studies show the key reasons are these. #bfc530

I was with a beginning T on Friday. One of her biggest fears; being accepted by her team, she was afraid of her youth. that completely saddened me. #bfc530
The problem is a shortage in lower SEC areas. There is no pro filling positions here-no shortage-but at those poorer school in Atlanta, different story. I know they’ve tried bonus systems, debt pay-off, and of course TFA. A lot more cd be done to encourage 2d career #bfc530

GM #bfc530! Had an inspiring weekend in the midst of sadness in Texas w past & current Ss & my own kids. Ran a Dream Run to support our undocumented Ss in their goal of college & celebrated w my former Ss as they raised $80,000 for the organization I sit on the Board for!
Honestly, I stopped being a mentor bc I had over half of my student teachers not ready to meet the demands. The other half were amazing. I just couldn’t take it any more. #bfc530
Just as relationships with students are important, relationships with Ts are important. We have to reach out and support Ts. No one should feel like he/she is on an island. Strong mentoring programs are needed to support and set new Ts up for success in the classroom. #bfc530

Very few people have a realistic idea of how hard Ts work. In our schedule Ts teach12 classes & have 11 planning periods. And still they take work home. If we want to meet our Ss needs, we work hard! #bfc530

The best way to train and retain good student teachers and new teachers is to responsibly pair them with good, strong teachers. Not just plopping them in and feeding them to the sharks. #bfc530

Good Morning all from CT. States need to make it easier for those in other professions or other certifications to become certified in a shortage area. I am an instructor in an Alternate Route for Library Media Certification here - it’s a shortage area. #bfc530

I agree. In being honest let's them know what to expect. Many don't understand what it takes and thinks it easy to teach. Know many in business that tried teaching and left because it was too hard. #bfc530
I told my hubby, we used to joke about moving to New Zealand (one of those dreams...), but I’m beginning to consider it as a true option if this continues. There’s a teacher need there - and my British passport helps the process. It’s sad that I have to think that way.
Teaching needs to be seen as a respected profession; as the one that trains all the future generations. Schools need to be well funded and equitable for all teachers and kids. #bfc530
But not sugarcoating it either. I’d hate to have people leave programs in $$ debt to go into a low paying, grueling field without understanding the scope of the work. It’s important work, but there is little glory here, it’s rewarding but difficult. #bfc530

I received a voucher for college classes for taking on student teachers. And I’ve two interns the last two years and there was no compensation for that (though they were great and helpful). #bfc530

Many new teachers are shocked by the hrs rqd and patience needed. Hate to sound like an old saw, but as life gets easier and entitlement becomes the norm, the graft and hard moments become tougher for those moments of success. So worth it, but hrd wrk and patience are key #bfc530
It is our job to advocate for our profession whether it is advocating for higher pay in our unions, taking on student teachers or speaking up to our alma mater about influencing the next gen of colleagues. #bfc530

The trick that I've noticed is that many districts are raising entry level pay to attract people but after five years the increases stagnate, especially if local economy is down. The larger increases need to be in the middle years #bfc530 .....

One might be able to live by oneself on a teacher salary but it gets real tight once you are married with a house (if lucky) and kids. Some places are so expensive to live people have to commute long distance bc they can't afford to live where they work. #bfc530
