A1: Haven't had an absurd day yet as an , but as a T, thought class was patient 0 for the zombie apocalypse
A1.The day I brought red jello & baggies for a lesson comparing animal/plant cell & DIDN’T say “please don’t fling these baggies.”

Hi Amy. The party’s just getting started.
A1: in one day I chased a student down the street, caught him, and still made it back in time to teach reading and writing!
oooo....gahhhhh....you poor thing!!!
A1 Being very pregnant and forgetting everything. "Wait, why did I open the closet?" "To get the glue sticks, Mrs. M!"
Thanks Joe, always ❤️ a !!
Thank you all. Her loss was the worlds loss no doubt but she loved school & even when getting chemo she went above & beyond
Q1 - when a parent refused to leave when the bell rang. difficult to diffuse the situation with a class watching you.
That’s hilarious. How high did it get up to?
Oh wow...that is rough. It is wrong, just wrong, when this happens
A1. Worst day was first year teaching. Kids totally out of control, jumping up turning on the radio (to 94.9 of course) & dancing.
A1: Wowwww! Too many to choose from!
A1: One time a S insulted another student so perfectly, I couldn't stop laughing for 5 minutes.
I have NEVER seen maintenance appear that fast or work that quick to fix something
The pundits on are equally entertaining right now.
A1: Is it a good thing or bad that I can't thing of anything devastating. Blocked it out? Or have perspective. We'll never know.
She is who we create for- Our Ss change the world- in big and small ways & their reach is as far as our own
I hope you gave them lot of chocolate ;)
Oh my. That must have been a crazy moment.
Pregnancy + teaching is sometimes very hard! https://t.co/ptKLaeRaq9
A1 Being very pregnant and forgetting everything. "Wait, why did I open the closet?" "To get the glue sticks, Mrs. M!"
A1 Presenting at AGHS...they were BLOCKED!! I told them they were really cool though...
A1 This year I have a P who sends off the wall emails to me, admin, & school board. She trapped me in my office last year. Scary.
A1a:i slipped on ice in a parking lot leaving a site. hit my head & had to go to hospital bc i was prego & having contractions
Nice. Why was he running in the first place?
The password is...spicy!!
HA HA HA YES! That's a great one Rocky https://t.co/RHaxRdUtS9
A1 Presenting at AGHS...they were BLOCKED!! I told them they were really cool though...
A1: Worst day ever, having stomach issues when assistant principal walks in and blame it on prek diapers 😳😱
I can say that I disliked field trips for a loooooong time!
Cream cheese blob on my shirt for like 1 hour.
It's so true! I miss my kid-made tea/coffee. *sigh*
Ooooh, you can have all my black licorice if I can have an extra mint ;)
Love when we have all our little learners there to keep us on track. :)
A1: Was sick (should have stayed home) early in first year as T, principal came in to obs. last class & "had concerns."
A1 But I figured it out!!
I once had 4th graders start a "yo mama" joke fest- so hard to be serious about how not funny their funny really was
A1:Tried to present a bunch of stuff at a site in another district. Most of it blocked on PD day. why?!
Totally. My forgetfulness became their new normal. :)
A1: It was tough guiding the district thru the math adoption and being accused of being unethical.
Broke my ankle slipping on slush while walking kindergarteners across the playground
A1) My sister calling in the middle of a math lesson to tell me she was getting married at city hall in 45 min. I missed it.
Oh man. That’s happened to me many times. Once w a big argument and my Ss were all staring
Dang...not sure if you win, but you should be awarded a cake.
YES! Nothing's harder than ignoring a really nicely crafted "yo mama"...my burden to bear
teaching in real winter conditions is rough!
Absolutely! They run the show. :)
WOW! This might win. https://t.co/tjdncI1e5L
A1a:i slipped on ice in a parking lot leaving a site. hit my head & had to go to hospital bc i was prego & having contractions
A1: I've had so many bad days, I think I blocked them out of my mind... yr1 was pretty rough tho. Kinders gone wild :(
i got a baby eventually so that's enough of a prize. talk about a crappy day!
Never too late Mia. Great to have you with us
A1: My 2nd yr teaching was so hard- I used to go outside my classroom door to try to stop crying. (They were throwing desks!)
A1 a funny one. 7th grader in an 8th Math class referred to the vertex as the point of cervix... hard to hold in the laughter.
LOLing at all of the A1 stories.
Glad to have you! Better late than never.
WHAT????!!! That is CRAZY! OK You and are tied. https://t.co/5shvocuYf2
A1) My sister calling in the middle of a math lesson to tell me she was getting married at city hall in 45 min. I missed it.
It is as bad as not laughing when my children do something bad but funny- can't turn head fast enough
Mine was pregnancy woes, too. That sounds HORRIFYING!
A colleague once said you can’t control crazy; you can only try to contain crazy.
I believe “...wit yo big a$$ fo’ head” was in the mix.
I shoulda talked to to make a dislike button for tonight...
Hi Veronica. Great to have you with us. The party’s just getting started
A1) My student's hamster escaped overnight - it was there as our pet for a week! Found it 3 weeks later - alive! Thank God!
I feel you! Those first couple years are rough!
I ended up 1/2 way under my car. Luckily hubby was home 2 go 2 hospital with me.All was ok.
Oh, that is awful, Kelly! Definitely a risk of living in Tahoe! https://t.co/eVaHUGA0Bb
A1a:i slipped on ice in a parking lot leaving a site. hit my head & had to go to hospital bc i was prego & having contractions
I Valerie. Didn’t see when you joined us. Great to have you with us on
. I hung out with one of my good buddies this weekend. His last name is Golliher. So close.
the one question twitter chat- we could go all night with Q1!
Wait, let me tell you MY pregnancy story. Oh, wait...
It was 4 years ago - but my last day as a classroom teacher - I was hired as a TOSA over that summer!! … https://t.co/LKXp2OTNMU
That's terrible! Hope you have a speedy recovery!!
Seriously! I went through a long time of reflecting, regretting, and more
A1:1st formal obs as a T -stung by a bee as I walked in & then accidentally kicked a bookshelf, making my toe bleed just b4 lesson
I used to LOVE "your mom" punchlines, but kids set me up ALL OF THE TIME..."this math is easy"
A2-Ok chat friends- how did you know our wiring was stolen and I worked w/no electricity and wifi 2day! I
A2: As a teacher I always turned to reading or writing. Haven't had things go completely haywire for an entire PD. knock knock
Ouch! That might be the win!
let's do that another day for sure!
Yikes! How did you get through that?
and I COULDN'T....I just...*sigh* opportunities lost.
A2: It's time for a good old fashioned scary story!
A2: I have a tote in the closet w/assorted Brown Bag STEM activities
A2: A game of NIM! Or Pico, Fermi, Bagel!! When it all fails...play a math game!
Ohhhhh I have another A1. We drove from Concord to Sonora (about a 3 hour drive) with three 4th grade classes, no ac, on June 5th.
A2- I love switching to reading or physical activity - reboot the mental
A2: We had plenty of lockdowns, so impromptu storytelling had 2B great!
Blue tape is a life saver!
You are such an amazing educator. AND you now can help those 1st years :)
"...and the Bouncer is a jacked IT guy who won't stop throwing "
Awwwwww Happy Birthday!!!
A2.My backup plans usually come to me in the moment. When the power went out, we got flashlights & told ghost stories.
A1: bristle bots w/TKers. Did you know they can't manipulate a rubber band like an adult? But can all ask for help ... in unison!
A2 Coding on paper. Paper Jeopardy. Have we lost our ability to teach sans tech? I think not.
A2: We rolled out 1:1 with Chromebooks last year, so there were occasional issues. Whiteboards, activities, always another way.
A2: Time to read! Build forts in the classroom and read w flashlights!
A2: go outside and read/write! So fun to do a writing project on natural environment esp when you're surrounded by beauty!
It was rough...but I have moved forward!
Yes! Love the creativity and innovative nature of the maker movement. https://t.co/ID7Y1eQwuo
A2: Making simple machines with whatever is around, maker spaces rule!
Yes, those are TOUGH days! (Doing a certain 'activity' every free moment as well. Don't miss that!)
A2: Backup is always having students talk to each other - interview and ask/answer questions. It takes ZERO tools!
Good one. Although today was one 100 again. Might not have been too fun. Is it fall yet?
ouch Duane. Been there although nothing overt. Adoptions are rough.
Hey Wish I could stay up and chat tonight but I am worn out. This east coast girl is off to bed. Hope to… https://t.co/21bDXjbLbD
A2 as a consultant if the building is crazy I can step in to help as needed. If I am with Ss, we can have conversations! Share!
A2 I assumed we were talking about PD. In class I would grab a good book. Nothing like a good read aloud. Or GO OUTSIDE =)
A2: Love to have a fantastic story or poem to pull out, Socratic Seminar = no electricity, need to get some sketchnote lessons!
A2: Most of my work is with adults these days that my backs are still tech. I need to model not giving up the
, have a song&dance number, couple of good jokes,& stuff loaded on a pin drive and back up generator for th… https://t.co/RVUJ51B58F
Even with the magic of 2 columns it's hard to keep up!!
Pretty much anything for me. :)
A2: as 4th grade Teacher- writing...sensory, power, expository, narrative, poetry- so lo-fi it's a crime!
Such a good plan! I really need to build a presenter kit.
A2 I run a STEM Lab, so K'NEX are my go to when the wifi is out.
Label things w blue tape & a Sharpie
G'nite, Margaret from Virginia!
in winter we've had snowman building contests. So fun!
Been working since middle of last yr to perfect it... still don't have the right traveling cart!
Good choice! Happy Birthday to the boy!
A2 A little extra read-aloud, and readers/writers workshop time!
OOOH yes! another good one
I assumed PD too. You know...cuz we're working w/ Ts & all. See my answer.
That's the best series ever!
Can't go wrong there! And storytelling!
Very true. We need to have the temperature go down & also do some rain dances. Come on rain.
The BEST place to be! Happy bday to that cutie!!
A2: campfire read aloud of scary stories with flashlights...
Problem 4 me is, I like to be minimalist. Hard to think of toting things around the district! But it may bite me one day
Yes! My Ss always loved the shared storytelling. Add a sentence or two, on to the next S. Fun!
and this is your solution for when this happens in a PD?
If not, what is?
A2: In classroom, when all else failed, it was time for a good read aloud
agreed! I need a hot spot. Working on that 1. Jelly of my co-worker who kept working when power went down.
Students love those student-staff games. Those were often at the end of our noon sports leagues
Yes! Our lego wall, pegboard wall, and magnatiles are fabulous!
My garage has boxes w blue tape labels.
A2b: & really, when was the last time you had such massive network failure, but STILL had electricity that you have to ditch tech?
Ok...come on Question 3...I forgot what I wrote...
I'm all about a circle If there's no wifi, no tech tools, go face to face, it will always be a meaningful way to connect
Wimp. Joe once moderated two chats while he was undergoing surgery. Or something like that. https://t.co/T2YdaaxIIy
Even with the magic of 2 columns it's hard to keep up!!
Sharpie Flip Chart markers are my go-to!
A2: A Tale Dark and Grimm is the perfect read aloud when the lights go out...
Grown-ups do well with outdoor brain/movement breaks, too!! Get them talking to each other!
Good Point-My worst PD days were different story-no kickball We went to F2F conversations around Pedagogy
I actually have done that before. Go outside, walk and talk, … (while another team member checks w IT)
A3 Does this not happen often for others?? LOL since I have experience I regroup, reflect and retry! =)
I'm about to lose my FF game...
A3. In the moment, I’d turn to my audience&say “hey, this is flopping, what’s going on?” I did a TON of times as a clsrm tr.
A3: Improvise! Read the room, even ask for input. Don't trudge ahead with a plan that is failing.
Sounds like a good PD to me!
A3: look to your feedback. What did ts say? How can you modify, adjust or throw out?
My teammates & I do our best brainstorming on our walk & talks.
Great minds Joe... great minds =)
No cart yet Amanda?! That Costco one sounded pretty sweet. :)
A3b: Hope for an honest friend in the audience to debrief with. I'm often my own worst critic.
A3 even a failed experiment tells you something
I think I just haven't prioritized it :)
A3: ask the audience, "where are we not connecting?" try and shift gears mid-preso
I totally believe in this!!!! https://t.co/xqkwUrFdv8
A3: ask the audience, "where are we not connecting?" try and shift gears mid-preso
A3: teachable moment- grace in the face of failure- how do you react when it doesn't go perfect? Failure is learning!
A3: I try not to wait until the end - modify as needed, dump if complete fail. After I figure out what went wrong & fix.
Yep. Can't be afraid to realign to meet the needs of the room.
A3 Pick the brain of every person you can who was there. Listen. Listen. Listen.
So smart to have your non-tech toolkit ready to go. I need to build mine, too, Debbie!
Definitely important to look at feedback. It’s a must for everyone.
A3: Totally agree! Stay flexible and improvise. It's ok to admit when something isn't working. https://t.co/4bqgNr6sIc
A3: Improvise! Read the room, even ask for input. Don't trudge ahead with a plan that is failing.
Yup...the games I'd play with Ss would work with Ts, too.
A3: Why did it flop? misread a crowd, no feedback gathered, hostile crowd.
A3 happened a bit with my last but they got more out of it than I thought...just not what I planned
I don't think I have ever had a presentation/lesson that hasn't "failed" in some way. Always something to learn from & reflect on
A3 For next time? Reflect on why it was a flop. Honest reflection is difficult. Be brave enough to ask for honest feedback too.
A3- ask the Ss what I could have done to make it more interesting, immediate feedback- maybe I sucked, maybe it sucked, who knows
I definitely ask for, review, and revise based on feedback!
Definitely! New ways to every day! https://t.co/lzRj2ZSo6J
I don't think I have ever had a presentation/lesson that hasn't "failed" in some way. Always something to learn from & reflect on
Definitely. We are all learners who love games - no matter what age.
A3: If you can tell it's flopping in real time, start getting right then. Ask participants to fix it with you!
I am always trying to get better 4 next time. Last PD got 2 debrief w/ Such a valuable part of the process.
YES! Shouldn't we always be looking to improve?! No sesh is every perfect. Always room to grow. https://t.co/3oZ7tXThvB
I don't think I have ever had a presentation/lesson that hasn't "failed" in some way. Always something to learn from & reflect on
The A1s in the middle of the A3s are hilarious.
Were you super impressed?? Fell asleep?? Need more to this story!
A3:Thinking on your feet is key when all goes wrong-know your topic/objectives-turn to good clssrm pedagogy-Ts are yur students
THIS! YES!
Why wait until the end to adjust. Do it right then with the collective efforts of everyone https://t.co/Ei15l6xEQE
A3: If you can tell it's flopping in real time, start getting right then. Ask participants to fix it with you!
I've learned to get input on the front end by sending out to inform my PD, also I try to pol… https://t.co/udb9EE3sTt
And even acknowledging that just because it doesn't go as planned, doesn't mean it was an absolute failure!
A good kickball game can turn everything around. :)
Well said. We’re always in the state of beta.
. Right!? Becuz why guess about what wasn’t working…ask! Get real data, Not the story in your head.
I need a sticker for my laptop. :)
Yup. Need to get real feedback so you can adjust and make it even better.
Bc if no, you mind as well be talking in front of a mirror. Know your audience, read your audience, engage them
was sitting @ desk gluing something while he played for Ss, I dropped glue stick, reached down & fell out of my chair
And Gregor the Overlander.
I need a coffee mug that reads "fueled by feedback"
i carry a sharpie and a pair of scissors in my car. just in case.
& remember, it's the session/materials that aren't working...not you as a person//professional
A3: This is in the classroom- remember to be flexible and prepare for variability in learners
I LOVE GREGOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bet could make one ;) She's a clever gal!
Sounds like we need another Red Bubble item.
I'm still here sorry my FF team just won my 0.5 points!!!
Nice. Definite essentials! I have blue tape rolling around my car floor.
And so many Ts need to learn the mindset. It's too bad so many have been punished for taking risks.
(Along with kids' socks, hair ties, wrappers, cheerios...) :)
can it say Fueled By Feedback on 1 line. then&coffee-in a smaller font below?
A4 Rule 1 breath and count to 10
Yup...as soon as possible I try to redirect. I ask "What would you need us to do to have your needs met?" https://t.co/OH0rO8Srmr
A3: I try not to wait until the end - modify as needed, dump if complete fail. After I figure out what went wrong & fix.
A4: I try to set things up ahead of time. Troubleshooting during - give them something to work on/with/ponder while I fix.
Sharpie in my front pocket, scissors (in multi-tool) on my belt. https://t.co/eGDejygEuU
i carry a sharpie and a pair of scissors in my car. just in case.
A4. humor, honesty, and the ability to laugh at yourself goes a loooong way
actually my supt stole my car scissors. need to get those bad boys back.
A4 Is it plugged in? Is it turned on?
Girl, I could go ON about books for a whole other hour!! ;)
Get it, get it! Your Ss will adore it!!
A4: I know theyre watching how I react-most import.role model time! How to just 'deal' when tech fails-teaches them to do the same
A4 rule 3 see answers for Q3
Check out Ready Player One
oh yes. several scents of hand sanitizer. lol!
I agree. I try to be transparent about risk taking in tech PD. Let them know I am still learning too.
A4a: Good Q. I think I use think-aloud so often that I do it when troubleshooting in front of adults. If it's a common problem...
A4: Show them what calm, cool, collected and a great sense of humor looks like!
A4: it wont happen if you teach the tech. Develop a mindset and Ts will be willing to press buttons or let Ss press them.
Oops... I'm a dirtbagger. No hand sani for me. :) But the lint rollers--YES.
A4: A4: I always have a conversation with students and the teacher...talking about patience!
A4: Visions of sweat rolling down my face profusely as I try to reconnect ELMO to laptop! Students make great tech troubleshtrs!
TOSA's are like teachers, who are like parents ... always prepared for the unexpected! https://t.co/ifxUJQauBQ
(Along with kids' socks, hair ties, wrappers, cheerios...) :)
A4b: ...Then I will walk them through it again after I've sorted it. Once you know a solution, that tool cannot be taken from you.
A4: I find many adults in favor of Ss learning & implementing a but w/peers ... perfectionism battles 😥
Yes...honest reflection is difficult, but super necessary! https://t.co/A4i7jxKqG5
A3 For next time? Reflect on why it was a flop. Honest reflection is difficult. Be brave enough to ask for honest feedback too.
A worthy tangent. Where the Mountain Meets the Moon?! GO!
A4 I'm genetically calm under pressure. And I'm darned grateful. T with hair on fire. Me: "It's going to be OK."
A4: like said, humor, fixing while sharing funny annecdote goes a long way
What a great thing to do for all learners. https://t.co/NvzuVa4Pun
A4: A4: I always have a conversation with students and the teacher...talking about patience!
And do my kids eat old cheerios off the seat/floor? Maaayyybbbe... :)
Sweet! You sure are fast at this.
A4 I stay calm, it's my superpower 😜
Intentional Sabotage: Model Mistakes&how 2deal w/them live!appeals 2 audience&helps them learn how 2 deal… https://t.co/ghMyR9HasE
A4: less worried about tech issues. How do we show Ts how to guide Ss to make the right decisions about online content.
Happened to me a few weeks ago. Internet sluggish for first 15min of PD. Boss called IT, and we made it work.
Much humility is needed by the tosa to ask participants to help fix it. Something for me to strive for! https://t.co/KwraEgXCbS
A3: If you can tell it's flopping in real time, start getting right then. Ask participants to fix it with you!
Oh yes! AND I download presentations ahead of time now if I'm presenting in an unfamiliar place
That is one of my all-time fav. books. Have read it several times!
A4: diversion- and now a quick team building activity...a snack...a break...think-pair-share...
A4 Rule 6 check the cables.
Haven't read it yet!!! *adds to list* Tuck Everlasting = my forever fav!
I don't know it! Will check out. Thx for rec!
but it is the same thing that we ask our Ts to do with Ss and tech.
if i'm modeling a lesson I ask kids for input. Want Ts to see Ss as tech helpers. Offer suggestions and ideas then try.
The Maze Runner series, of course!
A4: model patience & flexibility. It's an opportunity for learning, invite everyone in!
I love this thought, Josh. That's empowering. "Once you know a solution, that tool cannot be taken from you." via
Totally perfect description!
Glorious!!! The Matched Series
I did the cable thing by to myself a few days ago. T: "Is this supposed to be plugged in?" Me: (fist bumps T.)
tangent, but I find myself asking kids..."what button do you think would do ___" Most of the time they are right.
Check out "Crap Kingdom" it's...just magical.
A4 Rule 7 have a short time clock in your head don't b afraid 2 abort mission U only have a limited amnt of time til they're lost
A terrifying series...the Unwind series. >.#TOSAchat
yep. Let them participate in being fixers. Ts are often surprised.
I love involving the kids in reframing or fixing the lesson. It is easier to do this with Ss than with adults.
They have the best ideas!!
But I like it when they stare at me. ;-)
LOVE THIS! I need a longer commute and audio books.
Wonderful advice, Veronica. Positive self talk is important.
i agree with you. It's hard for ts to get our of comfort zone & offer suggestions. That's the hope though!
There is usually a "lowtech" backup, the show must go on- if it doesn't kill you...
Do you play the Mission Impossible theme song while your doing that too? :-)
THIS is why I'm gone from Voxer for weeks at a time I'm DEEP into an amazing series now
. I return to and there are like 200 tweets.
. I return to and there are like 200 tweets.
A4: Transparency. Make sure the audience knows I am now in "fake it" mode. Honesty goes a long way. https://t.co/PzWK7mBvfi
THIS!
I think many people quoted this already, but it deserves another. :)
https://t.co/zbDW4qb6iL
A4b: Make sure you let them see that broken tech doesn't mean the lesson is over- fix it on the fly or just let it… https://t.co/7MLfgeh2b8
