#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
I'm Alicia from NC, Lead Digital Learning & Media Innovation Facilitator at an incredible STEM magnet middle school! I'm beyond excited to be here! #LearnLAP
I'm Paul Solarz, a 4th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois and author of #LearnLAP ("Learn Like a PIRATE").
Excited to talk EdTech with everyone tonight! Thankful to have @iluveducating
moderating tonight!
Hi #learnlap! Kristen here from PA! Not to brag or anyhint, but I bribed someone into bringing me chocolate cake for breakfast. I know you’re al jealous... I teach 6th grade physical science!
Hi #learnlap! Marisa Thompson, HS ELA, Carlsbad CA #unlimitedteacher Just got done with a weekend of learning at #FallCUE and keeping the learning going with you!
A1: Very fortunate that thanks to great planning by @DrCBishop we went 1:1 this year with Chromebook! It has been an incredible opportunity! I used some of my department money to buy 2 dragonfly tablets as well. Ss also have their phones. #learnlap
A1- we are 1-to-1 with Chromebooks. @GoogleForEdu school incorporating classroom daily. We also dabble in a little robotics with dash and company #learnlap
A1: in my classroom we have 6 chrome books all the time, a few tablets, and we share a chrome book cart of 32 computers with another 5th grade class #LearnLAP
Jimi Grover, HS Math Teacher from Long Island. My students now (1st year) have chromebooks. This has hugely enhanced my instruction. We use IXL, desmos, euclidea for geometry. Smartboards flat panels for presentation. Occasionally flipgrids and plickers. #learnlap
A1: We have been 1:1 for the past four years in my grade and district wide for at least two years. K-6. In addition the Ss have the opportunity to use iPads, I have an Elmo and a projector that the kids also can utilize when they present work. We are fortunate. #LearnLAP
A1: My middle school has been 1:1 Chromebooks for 3 years now. I have beel exploring more apps to utilize this technology usage that is different than what "every other classroom uses" #learnlap
Our District is 1:1 grades 3-12 are chromebooks K-2 is iPads. We also have four computer labs two that are open for teacher use that have desk tops #LearnLAP
They can take them home. It has been incredible to create tasks on a regular basis that will help our students for THEIR futures! :) #learnlap@ERobbPrincipal
In reply to
@iluveducating, @DrCBishop, @ERobbPrincipal
I struggled to get a computer lab reserved at my school so I explained to Boeing how I integrate STEM within HS math content and they funded a class set of Chromebooks. #learnlap
A1: A LOT-what counts as tech?-iPads, laptops, cameras, interactive display, augmentative communication devices, accessible vision & switches, VR goggles-that’s just hardware, lots of software…and my bionic attitude #LearnLAP
A1: We are 1:1 with chromebooks but we have a ton of tech. Virtual reality, ipads, @GoogleForEdu, document cameras, green screens, 3d printers, lego mindstorms, digital breakouts....apps galore. Really awesome opportunity for our students. #learnlap
A1 Most classrooms have 2 computers and 5 iPads. We also have a class set of iPads that can be signed out as needed. This year a chrome cart was added and is shared among two grades (12 classes) Moving in the right direction, but I'd love to be 1:1 in my classroom! #learnlap
A2: Using @Flipgrid & #BookSnaps have proven to be great ways to allow me to connect individually with students. I also love using Google forms to get feedback from all 400 of our Ss! #LearnLAP
A1: We are in year 4 of being 1:1, and year 6 of being a G-Suite school. The possibilities of connection are endless. The landscape of instruction has been transformed immensely through the years. #LearnLAP
My 1st gr. reading group can do their reading homework on @flipgrid and share their reading on @classdojo (I also communicate w/ parents on behavior, class goings on, general notes, etc. via Dojo) #learnlap
We have some of those and got a grant for a few @oculus and Vive headsets & computers for work on life skills and computer science training for students with physical disabilities #LearnLAP
In reply to
@DanKos3, @iluveducating, @pascoscientific, @MergeVR, @oculus
A2: Google classroom provides amazing opportunities for collaboration and conferencing. Also a huge fan of @Flipgrid for Ss to express themselves with confidence. #LearnLap
A2: My goal is to make tech in the classroom more than a glorified keyboard. I want to find innovative ways to bring content and technology together so Ss can leave my room with both content knowledge and tech skills to catapult them into a future of success! #learnlap@DrCBishop
Not really. Ss can manage their own extensions and our filter is pretty open. It gives so many opportunities for our Ss and Ts to take risks, and creates a lot of teachable moments. #LearnLAP
A2 devices allow us to amplify student VOICE with apps like @Flipgrid , @padlet, docs, and slides. With these apps, we can make our thinking visible 24/7 from the classroom or at home. #learnlap
A2 Well today I tried @peardeck for the 2nd time with the Chromebooks. It's a great way to give every student a voice and I got some great feedback on their learning. I plan to explore this and @Flipgrid this year with my Ss. #learnLAP
A2 we use google classroom, email and google docs as a group but several teachers are starting to branch out and explore other avenues on their own #LearnLAP
A2: We use @flipgrid, @GoogleForEdu to connect with students. We also are starting student blogs and creating a Social Media Intern Team to work on promoting out to the community. #learnlap
A2: Having a variety of tools available allows Ss to express themselves in a manner that they are most comfortable. We have web designers, movie producers, bloggers, coders, future YouTubers...the list can go on for days. #LearnLAP
Hey #LearnLAP crew and especially @iluveducating! I’m Greg, an elementary school principal from Northern California, and I’m sorry to be joining late! It’s been a busy (but awesome) Monday!
A2: Tech helps students grasp concepts bc they're seeing it from different perspectives. Not just me delivering lecture followed by examples on a worksheet. They can now visualize it, explore it, manipulate it, experiment it, play with it, discuss it, own it. #learnlap
A2 When students collaborate on something creative and digital, I get to see what they’re working on, stop by to discuss and nudge, and they are proud of their creations! These were made by groups in one class. Essay Feedback is fast & actually used because of ProKeys! #learnlap
A2 Basics, like sharing info or encouragement via Edmodo, but as “admin” on Edmodo or Seesaw I can see/comment on lots of student work- last year as elem admin I especially liked to surprise kids by commenting on their items #LearnLAP
That sounds great! I wish our district didn't have a strong filter or multiple hoops to jump through in order to introduce a new app or extension. #LearnLAP
A2 Building relationships starts with sharing about self. When we intro a tool I will model functionality by sharing bits about my life. Tellagami Explain Everything appsmash about my favorite local bookshops. #LearnLAP
A2: As principal, I don't have a class of students, but I have connected with kids in various ways - @Flipgrid , @googleclassroom, @seesaw Whenever I can I jump into learning that kids are doing on apps and to give feedback and applaud their learning #learnlap
A2 I like to use google classroom as a way to have ss access many of their materials. I also love being able to collaborate on writing projects using docs. I love the ability to add feedback right into their work to help them improve #LearnLAP
A2:They send me messages all the time through @Schoology or as an email. I always get back to them or follow up with them later that day or that next morning. #learnlap
A2: I use Google forms to quickly get info from my students. I also check in with my kiddos on @Kidblog and try to comment weekly on their blog posts #LearnLAP
Q2: i’ve been turning assignments into Google forms. Students get feedback on what they got incorrect and are allowed to submit the assignment for a second time. #LearnLAP
#learnlap
We use the technology to complete assessments and individualized assessments on several different websites. Students are also able to take pictures of their work and post to ClassDojo for their parents to see as well.
A1 I appreciate the use of tech; but, especially for SPED, always give choice of chromebooks or paper resources/graphic organizers. Some students just like to hold paper... #learnlap
A1: My middle school has been 1:1 Chromebooks for 3 years now. I have beel exploring more apps to utilize this technology usage that is different than what "every other classroom uses" #learnlap
A2: The tech doesn’t build relationships, but it can facilitate better & #accessible options for communication. For example, some of my students are non-verbal and only ‘talk’ with their tech. Empowering their voices is key to our relationships #LearnLAP
A2: My goal is to make tech in the classroom more than a glorified keyboard. I want to find innovative ways to bring content and technology together so Ss can leave my room with both content knowledge and tech skills to catapult them into a future of success! #learnlap@DrCBishop
A2 Our students have access to iPads and laptops. They will use the functionality of these tools to create presentations for class that we then flip onto the blog to share with a wider community. #LearnLAP
A2 When students collaborate on something creative and digital, I get to see what they’re working on, stop by to discuss and nudge, and they are proud of their creations! These were made by groups in one class. Essay Feedback is fast & actually used because of ProKeys! #learnlap
A2 also in the works of trying to implement more student curation with apps like @wakelet . Now more than ever, curriculum is replaced with the opportunity for tech. Teaching curation helps the Ss be the owners of their curriculum #learnlap
What would they be doing on the Chromebook? The same graphic organizers or does it give them another means to share (video, speech to text, etc.)? #LearnLAP
I have been using VR for 3 years. My Ss and I love it! Having a comp between classes uses bracketology for the next two days to put skeletons together - going to be epic! #learnlap
A2: Being a SPED teacher, technology is used 1st for accommodating my Ss. I like using it to collaborate with them instead of having to "hover" It places more ownership on their writing while offerring support from a distance #learnlap
We all do an introduction @flipgrid first and have to watch each other’s. Mine usually has the most views. I think they try to pause and screenshot any awkward face I make. #LearnLAP
A2 The tech helps to facilitate conversations beyond the classroom, I have seen Ss become more comfortable and confident, we use @RemindHQ and @voxer also through @Kidblog#learnlap
In reply to
@iluveducating, @RemindHQ, @voxer, @Kidblog
A3: We frequently email and text one another throughout the day with questions. If a class is released late, Ts will send out an email to the staff. I use Twitter and blogging to connect with my #PLN regularly! #LearnLAP
Using backchannels helps our elem Ss continue conversations from lit discussions. They also use that platform to capture notes while they are reading. #LearnLAP
In reply to
@Rdene915, @iluveducating, @RemindHQ, @voxer, @Kidblog
A3 of course the Twitterverse is amazing for an instant PLC but honestly the most fun we have locally is sometimes gettin crazy on GroupMe 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ #LearnLAP
A3- I have been using Google Classroom to facilitate PD challenges and build a district-wide PLN. Classroom allows me to provide feedback and converse with teachers anytime, anywhere. #LearnLAP
It might seem trite, but I do a lot of personal emailing. My HS Ss are so unaccustomed to reaching out for help that teaching them to ask Qs in an email is a first step. #learnlap
A3: I text or email a few of my colleagues throughout the day as ideas/questions come to mind. I connect with my #PLN on Instagram and Twitter. I’m also dipping my feet into the blogging world #LearnLAP
A3 we have so many shared drives and docs at work it’s great. We can all see the same things and this adds clarity and makes sure that all students across the district have access to the same materials #LearnLAP
A3: I use @voxer, @Twitter, @instagram and podcasts. Lots of folks I connect with regularly are like family and I have never met many of them. Talkin' about you #4OCFPLN ❤️ BTW, I also co-host a podcast, @BetweentheJohns, give us a listen #learnlap
A3 Well I have definitely grown my PLFamily through my #tlap discovery and expansion with #learnlap#xplap and more. I also connect with my work colleagues via twitter, google, Facebook etc #LearnLAP
A2: The use of Google Classroom has transformed our upper elementary grade classrooms and our primary grade teachers are finding more and more Google Apps to support students. Our students and staff are able to collaborate and learn from each other. #LearnLAP
A3 Twitter and blogs are useful tools for staying connected with a broad #PLN. With my peers in school we will use Diigo and our PLC time to focus on craft and/or share ideas. #LearnLAP#CollaborativePD
A2: Anything that includes S's recording themselves thinking, reflecting and sharing, usually with @flipgrid. I record myself, even though I don't love it! ;) S's love seeing their T's do things they aren't comfortable with, especially if they're required to do it. #learnlap
A3: I founded #waledchat (Thurs @ 9pm) to be a place for educators to reflect together and also host #Edusations (Youtube) to help collaborate on ways to grow as educators! #learnlap
A3: Using Twitter Chats has given me so much support, encouragement, strength, and beliefs in what I do! In one Twitter Chat, I receive more support than I do in 1 week in my building. Tech has helped me connect to others with similar passions!! #learnlap
It really helps students narrow down what they don’t understand and they have an opportunity to ask questions of me or each other to fix it before it is “final“. #learnLAP
A3: We use a school hashtag to promote what we are doing on Twitter. We also use a google site for all of our PLC work. Our admin team did an entire books study on Google Classroom. Twitter chats are an addiction of mine.... #learnlap
I have a tech tools YouTube channel geared toward my district’s needs. I just have to put together the how to get updates video for some of them. I also set up a pineapple chart but it has been slow to get off the ground. This one is low tech. #LearnLAP
A3: Twitter. I feel like I have become a stronger, more diverse educator thanks to the platforms of #champforkids, #122edchat, and #waledchat, amongst others. I have quickly realized that I am not alone. #LearnLAP
A2: As principal, I don't have a class of students, but I have connected with kids in various ways - @Flipgrid , @googleclassroom, @seesaw Whenever I can I jump into learning that kids are doing on apps and to give feedback and applaud their learning #learnlap
A3: There are the @microsoftedu Teams, Slack chats, Twitter discussions-depends on the relationship. Sometimes texting, video conferences, or email. Maybe liking Facebook photos of their kids. I like sharing info on tools for their class through various means to help #LearnLAP
A3: Twitter! Hooray! I feel so fortunate to have found so many likeminded colleagues via Twitter, and always leave chats like this feeling reenergized. #learnLAP
Twitter is an unbelievable professional library open 24/7/365. It is no wonder there is a Twitter session at most edcamps and conferences. #LearnLAP#EduWin
A3- I have been using Google Classroom to facilitate PD challenges and build a district-wide PLN. Classroom allows me to provide feedback and converse with teachers anytime, anywhere. #LearnLAP
A3. I’m going to put my entire book, The Superstar Curriculum, on google classroom so teaches can access it and use each chapter as mini lessons in classes. #LearnLAP
I love using Flipgrid too! It’s great for presentations and commercials for student council! I’m trying out the portfolio feature this year on @ClassDojo too! So much amazing tech so little time! #learnlap
A3 To communicate with colleagues, I use email, text, shared google calendars but when it comes to sharing genius ideas with colleagues, nothing beats face to face conversations. I love tech but this is one area where old fashion still rules imo. #learnlap
Emailing is a terrific way to reach Ss! Just received two emails from a student about clubs just a second ago! It's a skill our Ss need to learn. #LearnLAP
A3. Twitter, of course! I love that I have so many people on here to grow and learn with. This is a tribe ❤️. Also, I love using Facebook groups to have a deeper discussion without text limits. I also enjoy Instagram. #learnlap
As a middle school team, we have shared a Google slide presentation with each other. It’s published to the web and embedded on our website as an easy way to put all the homework up for students and parents. #LearnLAP
At the start of the year we explore the functionality of many and individual lit groups pick one they want to use. Todays Meet use to a favorite but now many choose @padlet. I shared some thinking here: https://t.co/CkBJmRotcL#LearnLAP
In reply to
@iluveducating, @Rdene915, @RemindHQ, @voxer, @Kidblog, @padlet
A4: We are starting a student blog this year and are so excited to share student voices with our parents! We also update our learning management system weekly with grades and lesson plans for parents and Ss who are absent. This also allows Ss to work at their own pace. #LearnLAP
A4: I email parents to show them the wonderful things their kids are doing at school. My colleague uses @seesaw to do this so need to check that out. #LearnLAP
I’m leading our first pd on using twitter as an educator! My focus will be connecting with and learning from fellow learners around the world! #learnLap
A3) I have grown so much by connecting &learning from my Twitter PLN. They challenge me and give me ideas to bring back to my school &colleagues. I also love sharing &supporting classrooms in our district by seeing their twitter posts and following my classroom Alums! #learnlap
A4 we have a school FB and Twitter page as well as do a district newsletter that is electronic and we send out weekly Glimpse to parents in each grade and use our SIS to contact parents electronically for communication and announcements #LearnLAP
A4 @seesaw is a great tool for communicating with parents and sharing student work. I wish I could say all of my parents signed up, but I have only about 70%. I use blogger for communication, but it's time to look for a new platform for that. #learnlap
I send lots of emails from our online grade book to keep them updated on things. Also invite them to the class remind code so they can get the text updates. If they provide their s’s name with theirs, anything I send specifically to the S I send to them too. #LearnLAP
A4: Teachers in my building use @classdojo (though I'm not a fan of the points) @BloomzApp and @Seesaw. Our staff also does quite a bit of Tweeting to highlight student learning and school wide goals.#learnlap
A3: The ideas I’ve stolen from Twitter have changed my school. They’ve change me. And the people I’ve met have inspired & encouraged & energized me to be a better educator. Because of a simple hashtag, I feel connected to some of the most incredible educators out there! #LearnLAP
A4- It is important to use technology to be as transparent as possible. LMS's like Classroom or @Seesaw allow us to share the learning happening in our classroom with others. @Flipgrid allow parents to see their student's thinking in action. #learnlap
A4: when I was in the classroom, I used Instagram to give the guardians a window into our learning. I also used Google Sites, Remind, and Google Classroom parent updates. This year, I’m using YouTube (@screencastify) videos and doing on site trainings for parents. #learnlap
Our Ss have been blogging for years! It has been amazing on so many levels from personal growth to writing growth to connecting with others. So much possibility! #LearnLAP
A4) @ClassDojo is everything! I love using it to post school wide announcements and keep parents in the loop about things in our classroom. I love how much easier it makes communication especially now that we are departmentalizing #learnlap
A4: Weused @Flipgrid 4 a get to know you video of the team of teachers and put it on our website in the summer, we use remind, we created a class FB page, a team classroom on Google, and our students will be creating a newsletter this year. We also use Twitter daily #LearnLap
It’s a challenge in my district, but the most powerful is parent tech training nights where they learn about how to use their phone and about the tools their kids are using too. #LearnLAP
A4: I use @RemindHQ to connect with my families. I send messages about homework and school events. I also send messages about what we’re doing, share pictures, and encourage families to reach out to me if needed. I’m also inviting them to check out our Kidblog page #LearnLAP
A4: This year I have created a digital newsletter as well as my own website for up-to-date school/district information. I also use the newsletter to send reminders. I share what their child will be learning that week & upcoming tests #learnlap
A4b some teachers also use remind 101 and web pages. We also have an assignment tracking program that notify spare ya when students don’t turn in assignments on time #LearnLAP
A4 Student managed Twitter account (@45Flyers) and blog keep families informed. Tweets share quick updates and blog captures more long form. Teacher messages and updates are shared on the school LMS. #LearnLAP
Make positive @screencastify videos about your students (shout it out!) and send a link to the video to the parents. It takes you only a couple of minutes but has such a great response. #learnlap
I put the same stuff on both but only the district one is live and public. The other is just in case and has different things one it that pertain to my #flipclass. That one is so old, docs and sheets had individual sign ins. #LearnLAP
A4: I email parents to show them the wonderful things their kids are doing at school. My colleague uses @seesaw to do this so need to check that out. #LearnLAP
A4: I send weekly updates of school reminders out to our Ps via our school FB page, for my Ss again - use @classdojo since it's all encompassing & this week made a "Share About You" grid for Ss/Ps on @flipgrid#learnlap
A3 I agree! I think Twitter is enormously helpful for all of us; but, especially for our new teachers. There's a certain risk with asking for help when one is just starting out. But, on Twitter, we truly are one big PLN!! #learnlap
A4 we have a school FB and Twitter page as well as do a district newsletter that is electronic and we send out weekly Glimpse to parents in each grade and use our SIS to contact parents electronically for communication and announcements #LearnLAP
A4: Come up with a class hashtag and share pictures and messages on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to keep them involved. Young ones can use @ClassDojo for the same purpose. #LearnLAP
A4 Connecting w/ parents:Currently using google classroom, email, REMIND and creating a google site that is designed to be useful on a regular basis. This site will have custom-made updated video support series for parents to access when students are struggling at home. #learnlap
A3: The ideas I’ve stolen from Twitter have changed my school. They’ve change me. And the people I’ve met have inspired & encouraged & energized me to be a better educator. Because of a simple hashtag, I feel connected to some of the most incredible educators out there! #LearnLAP
A4 With email initially and then we use @edmodo and @RemindHQ for connecting, planning to try some new ideas this year with either podcasting or a class blog page #learnlap
A3: The ideas I’ve stolen from Twitter have changed my school. They’ve change me. And the people I’ve met have inspired & encouraged & energized me to be a better educator. Because of a simple hashtag, I feel connected to some of the most incredible educators out there! #LearnLAP
For those of you who enjoy #LearnLAP each week, sign up for the weekly @RemindHQ email or text message - it's sent out 30 minutes before the chat every Monday! Link: https://t.co/7Ga9QqNfq9
When I worked with my skills class, many appreciated the tactile of holding a pencil, writing and being able to hold their paper. Just sayin' #learnlap
A4b I use to send newsletters but now make more videos thanks to inspiration from @_AndyJacks. Still write a little but people will watch more than read. #learnlap
A5: We use facebook, instagram, twitter, and our website to share information with our community. We will also share information through the student blog! #LearnLAP
It’s an 8 part workshop that covers different things like digital translation (many non-native speakers), creating resumes, email, social media, better photos/videos, along with stuff related to the students #LearnLAP
A5: My hope is that my presence on Twitter is one way to help tell my story. I also share photos of things we are doing in class to be posted on my school's FB and Instagram pages. I want Ps to see the awesome things their kids are creating! #learnlap
YouTube channel. I also commandeered the school twitter and send things out that way. Started the school hashtag and all the associated groups have started using it. #LearnLAP
A5 it goes back to finding a popular social media outlet with your community and reaching out and telling your story. It has to be an intentional effort to share all the things that are going on #LearnLAP
A4: We’re a rural school district & there are quite a few families w/o any connectivity. So every flyer we post on our website always go home in a weekly newsletter & is sent out via text so that everyone gets access. We also use FB to post a #GoodNewsCalloftheDay. #LearnLAP
A4: Come up with a class hashtag and share pictures and messages on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to keep them involved. Young ones can use @ClassDojo for the same purpose. #LearnLAP
If you've read "Learn Like a PIRATE" and want to connect with others at your grade level, please add your name to the #LearnLAP PLN here: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv
This is great for getting questions answered, connecting classes & comparing ideas! Hope you'll connect!
A5 Share the great things happening in your school through student-led social media to model a positive digital footprint. Partner with your local businesses and give them a shout out on twitter. Highlight the great things your community is doing as well! #LearnLAP
Our amazing librarian @wavinglibrarian records videos about what’s going on in the library every few weeks. We show the short clip to students before we come, so every student has a personal tour the library from the librarian! 📚#learnLAP
Tell your story but don't let it be just one way. Social media is intended to be social, to spark conversation. Use tools that invite feedback -- and invite feedback through any means, technological or not. #LearnLAP A5
A5: Obviously I’m inclined towards social media, but we’ve also created video-sharing platforms streamed disability advocacy events that students led #LearnLAP
A5: I share what’s happening in my room on Twitter and Instagram. I’m hoping to convince my principal to let me take over our school’s social media accounts/website to help share more of our school’s stories #LearnLAP
A5: We use Twitter a LOT! We also post Tweets to Facebook, and post info on our website. We did a survey with our community to see what social media they preferred and these were the ones that are mostly used (Instagram isn't trending yet).#LearnLAP
Sharing our thinking goes a long way. Blogging about our teaching helps inform a community and sparks conversation. #LearnLAP A post about technology and middle elem Ss: https://t.co/5swKoQ16OV
A2 - Flipgrid and Google Classroom helps them be more authentic. Flipgrid helps with relationship building between students and with me. Most of the time they must collaborate to participate. #learnlap
A5) I think it allows us to show the public how much amazing things take place behind the walls and open up our school to the community. We get to have more power framing our school in a positive light https://t.co/PYFlO7SLKT#learnlap
I decided that I need to jump on the #pottypd wagon. I think email has turned into the "Pit of Despair" and T's learned how to turn off the GC notifications. ;) #LearnLAP I need a captive audience for a few things. Lol!

Q6 is on deck! This chat is moving so fast! Time flies when you're having fun, and I'm having a blast learning with y'all! Get ready to put your thinking caps on! #LearnLAP
Hi Sean, I just followed you. As a SPED T (I'm a SPED P), you might appreciate my book entitled, "Lessons Learned from the Special Education Classroom" (https://t.co/QirLAnwLDV) which shares ideas/suggestions/reproducibles from the lens of parent, teacher & advocate. #learnlap
Q6: Tell about a time that using tech allowed you to begin, or strengthen, a connection that may not have been possible through face-to-face interaction. #LearnLAP
A4: As an admin: We began our FB & Twitter page to reach more parents to share events, Ss & Staff celebrations, showcase what great things are happening on campus #LearnLAP
Definitely! When I ran our school's facebook page, we constantly asked for photos of Ss doing awesome things at home! Parents loved sneaking photos of their Ss and sending them to us! #LearnLAP
A5: We have incredible students and staff. They are some of the hardest working and kindest people I know. Posting the positive on social media and showing who we are as a school is such a fun part of my job as principal. #WeAreWES#LearnLAP
A6: Many of my more introverted students will email me questions throughout the week rather than connect to me face-to-face. I've also seen Ss shine in @flipgrid that are very reserved in person. #LearnLAP
AND, and: If those young ones are social-media age, they can use the hashtag in their own posts. And families with kids of any age can use the hashtags, sharing learning beyond school. Tech can be a beautiful means for schools to connect with kids' learning everywhere. #LearnLAP
A4: Come up with a class hashtag and share pictures and messages on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to keep them involved. Young ones can use @ClassDojo for the same purpose. #LearnLAP
Q6: Tell about a time that using tech allowed you to begin, or strengthen, a connection that may not have been possible through face-to-face interaction. #LearnLAP
If you're available tomorrow at this time (7pm Central), please consider joining #5thchat, no matter what grade you teach!
@JustMeghan87 will be moderating: "The value of test corrections over test retakes."
#LearnLAP
A6: So thankful for how tech brought @_on11 (Illinois) and I (Virginia) together. We have collaborated, we text, and one of us even ordered pizza for the other because of how cool tech is in 2018! #learnlap
A6 Switching to a personalized PD model on your own time via Google Classroom has allowed me to connect with Ts who'd rather learn on their own than in an after school session. #LearnLAP
I think that sharing kids work & pictures from our school day via @seesaw & Twitter helps to build relationships with parents. It helps Ps feel a part of their children's learning. And it gives us a foundation from which to build a stronger partnership. #learnLAP
Great point! Ss know the pictures are coming :-) They loved knowing that they were "caught" doing something positive - like reading, showing kindness, etc. #LearnLAP#DIgCitWeek
A6: I have several teacher friends on the West Coast that I chat back & forth with regularly. Also most of my family live in other states. And then there’s all the #accessible tech my students use. #LearnLAP
Q6: Tell about a time that using tech allowed you to begin, or strengthen, a connection that may not have been possible through face-to-face interaction. #LearnLAP
A5: We have incredible students and staff. They are some of the hardest working and kindest people I know. Posting the positive on social media and showing who we are as a school is such a fun part of my job as principal. #WeAreWES#LearnLAP
A6: Some of my students who don’t speak often in class share their thinking or talk about their lives on @Kidblog. This helps me get a window into their worlds I didn’t always have. #LearnLAP
Cool. It's an important conversation. I often run pictures by my own kids before posting, but I'm conscious of who really has control in that situation. Anyhow, I do see it more in the context of posting good things and thus modeling good digital citizenship. #DigCit#LearnLAP
A6: Last spring, I read #InnovatorsMindset. I loved it. But I didn’t do anything with it. Until @gcouros led an IG Book Study this summer. My life was forever changed because I put my ideas out there & connected with people. The tech fostered relationships & creativity. #LearnLAP
Q7: How have you used #edtech to empower your Ss to connect with other Ss, either within your own class, your school building, or building connections throughout the world? #LearnLAP
A6: One of my English teachers @JeriAsaro did a google hangout with her 8th grade students and with a 5th grade class in our district and did peer reviews of the 5th graders essays. It was an awesome experience for both groups! #learnlap
A7 Students create, refine, perfect in class together; make tutorials to help each other; and this year we’ve started a worldwide blog exchange! First blog posts go out this week! It will be interesting for my students to have an authentic global audience of their peers #learnlap
A7: We use authentic tech such as Google Suite with authentic tasks and projects to collaborate with other Ss in the building. Working on going beyond that level but it can be tough to find opportunities! #learnlap
A6: The relationships I’ve formed on Twitter with people I’ve never met face to face have changed me as an educator! My PLN supports me, encourages me, challenges me to grow, and teaches me so many amazing new things that help me be better for my students! #learnLAP
