  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Nov 27 @ 10:07 PM EST
A1-I really think it is because of the power cell phones. A small device that can do so much. We must teach students importance and value...and that anything is possible with #technology. #Coding #CSEdWeek #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 27 @ 10:07 PM EST
R1: everything revolves around coding. There are no jobs that will not need this from this point forward. Honestly not sure how much any of us do this. #NVedchat

  • AndersonEdTech Nov 27 @ 10:11 PM EST
Just mentioned this to @LCHS_Bio a bit, but relate it to everyday tasks like cooking, you have to follow steps to get a recipe right, much like you do when #coding an app or something #nvedchat
  • MsHaughs Nov 27 @ 10:11 PM EST
A1: As Papert said, important to understand how comps work so we control the computers, instead of computers controlling us #NVedchat
  • MsHaughs Nov 27 @ 10:12 PM EST

  • Jenn_Garner Nov 27 @ 10:17 PM EST
A1: coding gets the students thinking about problem solving in general. Something kids are lacking these days #NVedchat
  • MsHaughs Nov 27 @ 10:17 PM EST
A2: Computational Thinking is topic most Ts can relate to, not tech-dependent & easy to integrate into all subject areas Good intro to CS! #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech Nov 27 @ 10:18 PM EST
I've never done anything for #HourOfCode offered to assist my school's science teacher in it this year and I found some really cool nontech #coding activities for my 6 year old for Christmas #nvedchat
  • rpencetech Nov 27 @ 10:18 PM EST
A1: Benefits endless: communicate across countries & cultures, be innovative, solve problems more efficiently, no barriers to impede your success, develop important life skills (i.e. collaboration, communication), & even more when integrated with subject learning. #nvedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 27 @ 10:18 PM EST
R3: I have done zero. My daughter is part of her school’s robotics team and she does a little coding. I want and need to do more of it. #NVedchat
  • SJteaches Nov 27 @ 10:18 PM EST
A3: can't say I've done it lately, but used Scratch with my @SNWPEducators youth campers. Ss used Scrath to animate stories they wrote. #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Nov 27 @ 10:18 PM EST
A3-Helped organize a school-wide #pbl day focused on #coding @WestCareerTech. It was awesome! Next year we outreached to middle/elementary school with video chats. #NVedchat #CSEdWeek
  • BonanzaFire Nov 27 @ 10:18 PM EST
A3: having my Ss take Tuesday and make it "Your Computer Time" day. Where S get to explore anything they want online if it has to do with learning BUT they must tweet or email me why they picked what they did #NVedchat #CSedWeek
  • Jenn_Garner Nov 27 @ 10:19 PM EST
A2: I think if people could see how easy and fun it is, they wouldn’t be so scared. #NVEdChat
  • KierstenBasch Nov 27 @ 10:19 PM EST
A3: @PLTWorg coding the testbeds has been fun. I love that the kids are coding the joystick controllers for competition on Dec. 16 #NVedchat
  • SuprTekTalk Nov 27 @ 10:19 PM EST
That’s an interesting take on it. But now that you mention it, does make sense! #NVedchat

    A3 interesting Q since I teach #coding to all Ss as a specialist. Everyday is #HourofCode at @MarzanoAcademy ! #NVedchat
  • thedullguy Nov 27 @ 10:21 PM EST
R3: (snuck in late) Ss in PLTW Principles of Engineering select a task from a list of varying difficulty of both physical build & code, such as an elevator, track timer, soccer goal indicator, or sunlight follower. #nvedchat
  • AndersonEdTech Nov 27 @ 10:21 PM EST

A3 I’ve done a payload to space, lego robotics, but usually with others support w/ equipment & expertise #NVedchat
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator Nov 27 @ 10:23 PM EST
Q4(Final Question) Should #coding or computational thinking be taught all year long in every grade level? Why or why not? #NVedchat
  • carr_8 Nov 27 @ 10:23 PM EST
A3: I usually sign us up for #hourofcode but this year @SuprTekTalk is doing this for us this year! Excited to see what he has planned for all of us #NVedchat
  • MsHaughs Nov 27 @ 10:23 PM EST
    A3: Use @codeorg #HourOfCode resources, Intro to Dash & Beebot lessons & Intro to Scratch tutorials https://t.co/v04WExUFEN & @KarlyMoura HOC hyperdocs! #nvedchat
  • BaynesHeidi Nov 27 @ 10:24 PM EST
A3: We encourage participation district-wide and in the past have combined live "unplugged" coding activities with the HoC provided activities. This year we've got plans to include robots and @Raspberry_Pi as part of the fun during #CSedWeek #NVedchat
  • alihalsey Nov 27 @ 10:24 PM EST
A3 - we’ve been partnering our middle school computer science kids with our kinders. They been using beebots and other unplugged activities to teach basic coding skills and algorithmic thinking #NVedchat
  • MaggieJCox Nov 27 @ 10:25 PM EST
A2 not sure, I’m interested even though it is not my area but I find many feel it’s not their responsibility for same reason. Still trying to find ways to add to my course, until #CS #code is taught to everyone like typing was I think we all have responsibility #cs4all #nvedchat
  • AndersonEdTech Nov 27 @ 10:25 PM EST
A4: It definitely should be taught in the earlier grades to start planting the seeds of critical thinking, not sure it should be "forced" on HS students #nvedchat
  • KarlyMoura Nov 27 @ 10:25 PM EST
    Thanks Amanda! =) More resources here #nvedchat =) https://t.co/04GWsleVes

  • LCHS_Bio Nov 27 @ 10:26 PM EST
R4: coding needs to be incorporated into every class IMO. My thoughts: we have to show Ss how this all interrelated instead of being taught in an individual silo #NVedchat
  • rpencetech Nov 27 @ 10:26 PM EST
A2: Give Ts opportunities to learn coding hands-on, small steps, start w/great resources from @codeorg, @AppleEDU, @GoogleEDU to help walk through lessons & new experiences. Help Ts make connections between subject learning & coding, & get excited about learning! #nvedchat
  • KierstenBasch Nov 27 @ 10:26 PM EST
A4: I think everything needs to be taught in context and in moderation. However, Problem-solving and Perseverance need to be taught all year long. #NVedchat

A4: It shld be taught in ES to expose Ss into CS and if it is something they want to continue then yes they shld be able to take CS every yr. #NVedchat
  • SJteaches Nov 27 @ 10:27 PM EST
A4: I like the idea of "systems thinking" and technology integration and application but allowing kids to choose to enter more detailed/advanced levels as they get older. #NVedchat
  • thedullguy Nov 27 @ 10:27 PM EST
Definitely helps to have a teacher willing to face up to the fact that some of his students are way better at coding than he is. Takes away the fear factor a little bit. :) #NVedchat
    In reply to @Jenn_Garner
  • EducatorSanchez Nov 27 @ 10:28 PM EST
A4 Yes, but we should start to vertically align it, Ss have been coding for some years now w/ limited exploration outside of a website, so Ss lose interest if we don’t build on it every year w/ real equipment #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech Nov 27 @ 10:28 PM EST
My biggest thing as a teacher is how it can be incorporated into my curriculum, learning it "as is" or "in a silo" doesn't do much #nvedchat

R4: Excel makes an excellent lowkey point of entry to coding concepts. Output of one cell becomes input to another, creating a display intentionally, working out formula syntax. #nvedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 27 @ 10:30 PM EST
Thanks to all of you for giving me something to think about to improve what I do with my Ss. Have a great week! #NVedchat

  • BaynesHeidi Nov 27 @ 10:31 PM EST
A4: I struggle with this one because my immediate answer is "of course!" but it's so much easier said than done. Definitely should be introduced early so that students have the opportunity to pursue it further if they choose. #NVedchat
  • EducatorSanchez Nov 27 @ 10:31 PM EST

Take what works, get rid of what doesn’t, and embrace the unknown! This should be the teacher motto as we begin to transform our educational system for our students, for our future. #nvedchat
  • thedullguy Nov 27 @ 10:34 PM EST
Thanks #nvedchat! I appreciate the chance to hang out on Mondays and learn with you and from you. Have a great week!
  • rpencetech Nov 27 @ 10:34 PM EST
A3: We hosted #HourofCode nights for families to come in & code w/Ss, Design & Dine events for Ts to learn to code an app for classroom use, we partnered w/other schools to learn code together, we have made it a part of our curriculum & learning experiences year-round! #nvedchat
  • MaggieJCox Nov 27 @ 10:35 PM EST
Yes “unplugged” activities are really the best idea to start because we all have directions to teach, make it activity game, then explain directions through process as #code #nvedchat

  • MaggieJCox Nov 27 @ 10:44 PM EST
A4 Need to move towards computer science in all subject areas & in more grade levels. Why did we required computer/typing classes & now most schools have no computer requirement? Yes Typing is less important but #code should have replaced it #nvedchat #weneedmore
  • rpencetech Nov 27 @ 10:44 PM EST
A4: I believe that coding is for life, it is a part of what powers the world around us, no matter what path you may choose, learning code helps us learn how to think, helps us problem solve, and can help us to imagine & build a new and better world. #nvedchat
  • MaggieJCox Nov 27 @ 10:58 PM EST
This is one of my concerns, we have ES students doing #code is a 1:1 environment at some schools then they progress to MS & HS & Skills are not built or applied #NVEdChat
