#NVedchat is dedicated to increasing communication and collaboration of education related topics in the State of Nevada. Originally, created by Mr. Snehal Bhakta.
Let’s start by giving a shoutout to another educator(s) using their twitter handle & the hashtag #NVedchat to join us tonight! Bonus points if you can do it in 0's and 1's
Fitting conversation, my bank account was hacked today. Told my Ss that one of them needs to major in computer science to be one step ahead of the hackers & to be ethical #NVedchat
Let’s start by giving a shoutout to another educator(s) using their twitter handle & the hashtag #NVedchat to join us tonight! Bonus points if you can do it in 0's and 1's
A1: It is all about being innovative. If you dont learn what the world currently needs then you will be left behind. S need to learn this skill to better prepare them for an internet world. #NVedchat
A1-I really think it is because of the power cell phones. A small device that can do so much. We must teach students importance and value...and that anything is possible with #technology. #Coding#CSEdWeek#NVedchat
R1: everything revolves around coding. There are no jobs that will not need this from this point forward. Honestly not sure how much any of us do this. #NVedchat
Just mentioned this to @LCHS_Bio a bit, but relate it to everyday tasks like cooking, you have to follow steps to get a recipe right, much like you do when #coding an app or something #nvedchat
R2: we need to show both Ss and Ts that this is applicable. Next is to educate Ts to feel comfortable in showing Ss how to do this. Honest, I have ZERO clue how to do this. Want to know. Good opportunity to learn w/ Ss. #NVedchat
A2- Learning & Education has to be where the students are...and use they are into #technology and will be into #coding as that is where all the opps will be in all careers. #NVedchat#CSEdWeek
A2: Baby steps and low pressure. Make it accessible and fun. Show real-world applications and how computer science permeates every nearly every industry. #NVedchat
Q3: Sharing time....What are some #HourOfCode or #Coding activities you have planned or done in the past in your classroom or at your school, district, or even at home? #NVedchat#CSedWeek
A2 - I love giving teachers the Hour of Code lesson plans and having them have fun with the activities! It’s a great and super engaging intro for kids and teachers! #NVedchat
The 3rd quarter of the PLTW Principles of Engineering course is all machine control & mobile robotics. So now they are coding with a task in mind. #NVEdChat
I've never done anything for #HourOfCode offered to assist my school's science teacher in it this year and I found some really cool nontech #coding activities for my 6 year old for Christmas #nvedchat
Q3: Sharing time....What are some #HourOfCode or #Coding activities you have planned or done in the past in your classroom or at your school, district, or even at home? #NVedchat#CSedWeek
A1: Benefits endless: communicate across countries & cultures, be innovative, solve problems more efficiently, no barriers to impede your success, develop important life skills (i.e. collaboration, communication), & even more when integrated with subject learning. #nvedchat
A3-Helped organize a school-wide #pbl day focused on #coding@WestCareerTech. It was awesome! Next year we outreached to middle/elementary school with video chats. #NVedchat#CSEdWeek
A3: having my Ss take Tuesday and make it "Your Computer Time" day. Where S get to explore anything they want online if it has to do with learning BUT they must tweet or email me why they picked what they did #NVedchat#CSedWeek
Q3: Sharing time....What are some #HourOfCode or #Coding activities you have planned or done in the past in your classroom or at your school, district, or even at home? #NVedchat#CSedWeek
R3: (snuck in late) Ss in PLTW Principles of Engineering select a task from a list of varying difficulty of both physical build & code, such as an elevator, track timer, soccer goal indicator, or sunlight follower. #nvedchat
A3: I usually sign us up for #hourofcode but this year @SuprTekTalk is doing this for us this year! Excited to see what he has planned for all of us #NVedchat
Q3: Sharing time....What are some #HourOfCode or #Coding activities you have planned or done in the past in your classroom or at your school, district, or even at home? #NVedchat#CSedWeek
A3: We encourage participation district-wide and in the past have combined live "unplugged" coding activities with the HoC provided activities. This year we've got plans to include robots and @Raspberry_Pi as part of the fun during #CSedWeek#NVedchat
Q3: Sharing time....What are some #HourOfCode or #Coding activities you have planned or done in the past in your classroom or at your school, district, or even at home? #NVedchat#CSedWeek
A3 - we’ve been partnering our middle school computer science kids with our kinders. They been using beebots and other unplugged activities to teach basic coding skills and algorithmic thinking #NVedchat
A2 not sure, I’m interested even though it is not my area but I find many feel it’s not their responsibility for same reason. Still trying to find ways to add to my course, until #CS#code is taught to everyone like typing was I think we all have responsibility #cs4all#nvedchat
A4: It definitely should be taught in the earlier grades to start planting the seeds of critical thinking, not sure it should be "forced" on HS students #nvedchat
R4: coding needs to be incorporated into every class IMO. My thoughts: we have to show Ss how this all interrelated instead of being taught in an individual silo #NVedchat
A2: Give Ts opportunities to learn coding hands-on, small steps, start w/great resources from @codeorg, @AppleEDU, @GoogleEDU to help walk through lessons & new experiences. Help Ts make connections between subject learning & coding, & get excited about learning! #nvedchat
A4: I think everything needs to be taught in context and in moderation. However, Problem-solving and Perseverance need to be taught all year long. #NVedchat
A4: It shld be taught in ES to expose Ss into CS and if it is something they want to continue then yes they shld be able to take CS every yr. #NVedchat
A4: I like the idea of "systems thinking" and technology integration and application but allowing kids to choose to enter more detailed/advanced levels as they get older. #NVedchat
Definitely helps to have a teacher willing to face up to the fact that some of his students are way better at coding than he is. Takes away the fear factor a little bit. :) #NVedchat
A4 Yes, but we should start to vertically align it, Ss have been coding for some years now w/ limited exploration outside of a website, so Ss lose interest if we don’t build on it every year w/ real equipment #NVedchat
Thank you for joining tonight’s #NVedchat on #Coding in the Classroom. #HourofCode#CSedWeek
Keep the conversation going all week long and don't forget to follow the awesome tweeters from tonight.
We are a 30 min Monday chat on #education.
R4: Excel makes an excellent lowkey point of entry to coding concepts. Output of one cell becomes input to another, creating a display intentionally, working out formula syntax. #nvedchat
A3 I have been doing some #Swift playground & trying to create some @sphero projects for anatomy. Nothing has transferred to class yet 😐 need more time in my day #nvedchat
Q3: Sharing time....What are some #HourOfCode or #Coding activities you have planned or done in the past in your classroom or at your school, district, or even at home? #NVedchat#CSedWeek
A4: I struggle with this one because my immediate answer is "of course!" but it's so much easier said than done. Definitely should be introduced early so that students have the opportunity to pursue it further if they choose. #NVedchat
Take what works, get rid of what doesn’t, and embrace the unknown! This should be the teacher motto as we begin to transform our educational system for our students, for our future. #nvedchat
A3: We hosted #HourofCode nights for families to come in & code w/Ss, Design & Dine events for Ts to learn to code an app for classroom use, we partnered w/other schools to learn code together, we have made it a part of our curriculum & learning experiences year-round! #nvedchat
Yes “unplugged” activities are really the best idea to start because we all have directions to teach, make it activity game, then explain directions through process as #code#nvedchat

A2 As the tech EVERYTHING at school, I always have an open door for anyone, including admin, to come in, see my students at work, and ask them and myself questions. There are always ways for everyone to learn something new.#nvedchat
A2 not sure, I’m interested even though it is not my area but I find many feel it’s not their responsibility for same reason. Still trying to find ways to add to my course, until #CS#code is taught to everyone like typing was I think we all have responsibility #cs4all#nvedchat
Thanks everyone & teach your Ss how to code & be ethical, I seriously was hacked today & I changed the name from Cyber Monday to Cyber Warfare, learn to code #nvedchat
A4 Need to move towards computer science in all subject areas & in more grade levels. Why did we required computer/typing classes & now most schools have no computer requirement? Yes Typing is less important but #code should have replaced it #nvedchat#weneedmore
A4: I believe that coding is for life, it is a part of what powers the world around us, no matter what path you may choose, learning code helps us learn how to think, helps us problem solve, and can help us to imagine & build a new and better world. #nvedchat
This is one of my concerns, we have ES students doing #code is a 1:1 environment at some schools then they progress to MS & HS & Skills are not built or applied #NVEdChat
