A1: To me, SEL means recognizing and understanding the varying emotions and necessary skills needed in order to navigate through school and through life. It is important because many of these skills and attributes are key contributors to our students success. #WeAreWayne
A1: Social Emotional Learning is a game changer for our scholars. It gives them a voice and words to articulate their feelings. It creates a supportive environment for vulnerability and a path to meaningful and lasting connections to ALL school family members. #wearewayne
There were many hugs and tears today in Rm. 14 @RobeyRockets on the last day of student teaching for @MsBrooklynCohen. We'll miss you and much success in your teaching career. Come back and visit soon! #wearewayne

A1. I think of helping our kiddos understand and manage their emotions as they grow into adulthood. It is important because these skills are expected to be present throughout the lifespan. #wearewayne
A2: There are students with mental health conditions that do not have SEL deficits, as well as students with specific SEL deficits that do not have mental health needs.#WeAreWayne
#wearewayne A2: The key focus of SEL is to develop and foster growth in social and emotional wellness as a way to prevent the development of mental health disorders among youth. SEL instruction is a Tier I support for all scholars.
A2: SEL is the functional application of being mentally healthy: what skills do we need to teach to make a difference in everyday situations? #wearewayne
A2.SEL plays a critical role in the promotion of positive mental health and the prevention of mental health disorders. Mental health is not a static state and is influenced by the interactions with our environment. #wearewayne
SEL is a pathway to healthy mentality. It creates conditions to discuss feelings and how to express them in productive and healthy ways. It also helps build empathy and listening skills. #wearewayne

A2: SEL is all for everyone, while mental health services are utilized for our scholars struggling with more intense, specialized needs - tier I to tier III #WeAreWayne
A2: SEL is all for everyone, while mental health services are utilized for our scholars struggling with more intense, specialized needs - tier I to tier III #WeAreWayne
A2. SEL is an important part of maintaining good mental health- learning to regulate and balance natural emotions. Mental health challenges may be more intensive and need specific interventions. #wearewayne
A3: We meet every child where they are everyday and remember everyday is a NEW day...@McClelland_ES (Jenn Nichols) does this well and of course our SEL coaches!#wearewayne
A3. While we must adapt and adjust as we help students work through trauma, it does not lessen the expectations we have for them and they have for themselves. We just navigate different pathways to get there. I see this happening every day I the classrooms cross #wearewayne!
A3: EMPATHY! “In my view, the best of humanity is in our exercise of empathy and compassion. It's when we challenge ourselves to walk in the shoes of someone whose pain or plight might seem so different than yours that it's almost incomprehensible.” - Sarah McBride #WeAreWayne
A3 By paying attention to the emotional and regulatory state of our preschoolers before making a request, and helping them if there is an emotional need BEFORE putting on more@demands. I see this everywhere at WTP. #wearewayne
A3. I think by building a support system and knowing when your student needs a break vs when your student needs a push. We live and breathe this at Sanders. #wearewayne
A3: To have anything less than high expectations can shortchange what our Ss can do! I am reminded of some Newcomer Ss who face daily hurdles and yet....wow! Their grit and determination, combined with the right tools=success! #wearewayne
A2. Social emotional learning can promote mental health. SEL allows schools to focus on addressing children's skill development and creating a safe and caring school climate regardless of any said “label” #wearewayne
Im Cara Schaffer and after two years you'd think I'd have this Twitter chat down! Ah! #wearewayne. My trait is empathy. I truly care for my students, build relationships and see them as more than just a student.
A3: I see the maintaining of highest expectations along with genuine care and concern throughout McClelland. The commitment to SEL by ALL adults at our schoolhouse has taken a great culture and made it even better! It facilitates emotional learning that lasts.#wearewayne
A3: being able to provide our students with appropriate outlets, strategies, and resources to express & persevere! Our SEL coaches are doing a great job leading the way: @TeamWey10@Erwin13Alicia#wearewayne
A4: That's easy! I measure #SEL by the culture of the school. We all know that as soon as you walk inside a building you can immediately feel the culture, energy of the building. #wearewayne
A4: It is a great challenge. Certainly more qualitative than quantitative when measuring SEL skills. However, it is evident in the climate of a classroom, school, and district when SEL skills are being developed. The SEL work NEVER ends and the continuum is endless #wearewayne
A4: Student and staff surveys, student reflection, project based learning, focus on SEL traits and taking steps to incorporate them into daily activities.#WeAreWayne
Q4: #wearewayne We see a change in ADULT behaviors along with child behaviors. (Adults first...) Decline in referrals, suspensions, expulsions, eventually!
A4. From my perspective, seeing emotional growth in a student is such a huge victory! Ex when they handle a situation in an entirely different way than they would have x months ago, etc. We love to celebrate these moments at Sanders! #wearewayne
A4: I think this is a tough question, because I’m not sure that I want to apply a matrix to such individualized work. If I had to choose something, I would say discipline referrals?!#wearewayne
I agree. It is almost like PBIS. As soon as I walk inside a building I can tell if it is a PBIS school or if the school has a positive culture. #wearewayne
A4: Classrooms with a focus on SEL have a family feeling and atmosphere, where all members are valued and heard. You feel “at home” when you enter. For a more objective, data-driven measure, look at the number of write-ups abs suspensions #WeAreWayne
Last question for the chat #wearewayne Q5: What do you see as your specific role in impacting Social Emotional Learning and students experiencing trauma? As an Individual, School, Community?
A5: Building capacity amongst our teachers/staff and empowering them with the necessary resources, skills, and mindset to forever change the way our students think about themselves and others. Time to change the narrative!!!#WeAreWayne
A3: #wearewayne I have personally watched @dantedebrown practice this beautifully! He is caring yet firm! His actions communicate: I know it’s rough but I love you too much to let you fail!
A5: My role is to support administrators and teachers by providing ongoing tools and resources. Of course... my role also is to LEAD by example. #WeAreWayne
A5. As a social worker, I want to be able to model and process emotional regulation with our students, assess when more intensive intervention is needed, and be a resource to classroom staff who are working to support our students. #wearewayne
That is so true re:individual work! I also think the rater could have bias based on their own values... but I have witnessed growth in laughter, problem solving, perspective taking, etc reflected in day to day situations where I once saw frustration and anger.
A5: Model, continue to learn, expand teacher and scholar knowledge around all things SEL, support implementation and growth, and most importantly, extend more grace than necessary!! #WeAreWayne
A5: building a sense of belonging, safety, community, and positive relationship building, empathy is key in building these healthy relationships #wearewayne
A5: As an individual, to be aware of my Ss and to be responsive to their needs. As a school, to contribute to an inviting climate. And as a community, to take care of each other...Ss, Ts, families, everyone deserves to be SEEN. #wearewayne
A5: My role is not only leading, but modeling, a humble approach where we truly listen to understand and then give scholars access to resources that empower them. The magnitude of our responsibility requires a total investment in SEL to make our world a kinder place. #wearewayne
