Hello, #122edchat! Ryan in MI, 6th Grade Social Studies
Check out The Middle Level Mind Podcast with this week’s guest, @Beyond_the_Desk! On iTunes and now on Spotify.
Vanessa Heller from Southern CA a bit late (grading papers): #inquiry#pbl and #GiftedEd trainer, middle school humanities teacher, ELA Dept. Chair, Tech Innovator, Peer Coach. #122edchat
A1: I encourage others through unflinching support and modeling of growth through any setbacks.
@ERobbPrincipal constantly encourages and pushes me to grow.
#122edchat
A1 I just had a private chat with a student today about his anxiety, so I spoke to him honestly, plainly, yet supportively and offered help anytime. @JessieAGreen & @MicheleWagg are two women who amaze me and encourage me by modeling excellence in teaching & learning! #122edchat
A1 - Positivity and a willingness to always listen. Also, provide simple techniques that make huge differences. I’ll tag @ChristineBemis2 who is a constant inspiration. #122edchat
A1: Specific praise! I want to do more than say "Hey, you're awesome." I want them to know about the good things I see in them. Consistently thankful for the encouragement from @ERobbPrincipal@HistoryislifeDC@ToddRisser and @WDoerwaldt at school! #122edchat
A1: I encourage by being a listening ear. I invite colleagues in just to talk and if they want support I give it. If they want to vent, then I let them go. #122edchat
A1: There is quiet and bored looking vs quiet and wide-eyed with excitement. As a MS teacher my Ss are pretty vocal about being bored/unengaged too. If I take a second to listen, look around the room, & check in I can figure it out #122edchat
A2: I work to first listen with kindness and empathy, then to understand. Doing this really helps me to extend both kindness and know to check in w/ others who are struggling. Sometimes what Ts really need is just someone to listen and say "I know." #122edchat
Hi #122edchat! Yesterday was horrid day. Didn’t have lunch or prep due to meetings & faculty meeting. I fell 3 times and almost a 4th. Today was the opposite. Celebrated #GSDP2019 and had probably the best pt session. So thankful for tomorrow’s. I teach 6th grade sci in PA.
A1 - There are a million excuses NOT to do something. There is always something else to do.
Start making excuses TO do something. Or give students those excuses. #122edchat
A1: The "oooohhh's & aahhhh's" We did pixel art this morning from @ericcurts. The Ss started and were upset when I said it was time for them to go. When Ss don't want to leave your class, they're engaged. #122edchat
A1: Always walking around, listening to issues, asking if help is needed. Saying positive things as I walk around. @_on11 is a very encouraging person. Always positive... #122edchat
A1b - As for students, it’s about loving your job and building those connections where students want to be more than just a person sitting in a desk. #122edchat
A1 Listening to others really helps. Knowing when to offer support. Trust has to be built and you have to be authentic. @LisaMFaria1 has always been a great sounding board and collaborator #122edchat
A2: At school, a quick hallway chat or smile and wave does wonders - especially because my position separates me from so many in the building. #122edchat
#122edchat A1: Engaged students are asking questions and getting work done. Often, it is part of a collaborative experience for the students. Compliant students are getting work done, but not necessarily getting things out of the work.
A1: By trying to be the best I can be and modeling that for my Ss. @talie10@dytreboe is a colleague that constantly inspires me on my personal and educational journey to be the best me. #122EdChat
Shakespearean puns of course! We spent today playing a game called punderdome. Tomorrow, we review and go on the hunt for puns in Romeo and Juliet. Laffy taffy to reinforce. #122edchat
Oh my gosh. @Stella_Pollard is a gem. Such a wonderful human being. Hopefully things are taking a turn for the better in your neck of the woods, Stephen? #122edchat
In reply to
@TheStephenKeys, @Stella_Pollard, @Stella_Pollard
#122edchat a1 Playing Devil's Advocate I don't know you can inclass but if your students talk or practice or share work outside of class, you've nailed it. Getting in a group chat is a gift of learning big time.
A2: We cannot be fearful of lavishing praise on people for the good that we see them accomplishing. If we see good, we need to share it and thank people. The world does it's job of breaking people down...why can't we be the ones that build them back up? #122edchat
A2: I do my best to share kindness through empathizing with where Ts and Ss are and how I can help. I also believe in little acts of kindness that can end up being huge!
#122edchat
A1 I try to build relationships first to find out what they are passionate about. Then I motivate them or support them in any way I can. @Heather_R_Fonte encourages me every day. I am thankful for her words of encouragement and inspiration. #122edchat
A1. I encourage others by listening to what they have to say, sharing experiences with them both good and bad, and encouraging them to try something new and take risks. CF. #122edchat
A1: I answered a different Q1.. but I'll do this one too lol! Words go a long ways to encourage others "I know you can do this!" "You've already done ___, you can do this too!" "Why don't you try ___". Recognizing and appreciating what others do. #122edchat
A2 I’ll help and share anything anytime. Need something? If I don’t have it, I’ll make it or find it for you. I prefer to be nice on the down low…. Being too nice in public (at work) always ends up biting me in the butt somehow. #122edchat#SharingIsCaring
#122edchat A1 Compliant kids are in a class QUIETLY working, fear of breaking a rule dominates. #engaged kids are INTERACTIVELY working TOGETHER. You can HEAR the learning occur.
A1
Recognition goes a long way
Tweet about their accomplishments Write about them in a blog
Celebrate them with a donut a cookie a chocolate bar a cup of coffee whatever makes them happy simply because they make you happy :-)
#122edchat
A1: A couple years back I adopted a motto from the wonderful @LouiseHay. One of her affirmations says, "I am a joyful breeze entering a room". I try to be that for people. No one needs a tornado! I encourage others by being positive and pleasant when possible. #122edchat
A1: You encourage others to be the best they can be by lifting up the awesome things you already see them doing and by modeling, modeling, modeling. What are you doing to be the best you can be? Finally, it's vital that we honor their agency. https://t.co/7eSewMQuOp#122edchat
#122edchat Q2: Sharing kindness helps us all to be better in our respective posititions. How do you share kindness with those in your lives? #122edchat
I love how you said, "the journey to be the best me." Too often we try to achieve someone else's level of success and get frustrated when we fall short. Focusing on how we can be better versions of ourselves? YUP! #122edchat
I LOVE this. Sometimes I envy those that can come in like a tornado, but I much prefer being a joyful breeze. It's more effective for me and for my students! #122edchat
A1: A couple years back I adopted a motto from the wonderful @LouiseHay. One of her affirmations says, "I am a joyful breeze entering a room". I try to be that for people. No one needs a tornado! I encourage others by being positive and pleasant when possible. #122edchat
#122edchat Q2: Sharing kindness helps us all to be better in our respective posititions. How do you share kindness with those in your lives? #122edchat. Who would you like to tag who shares kindness ??
A1: I acknowledge everyone's efforts and thank them for doing what they do for their Ss and colleagues. @RobinMaya13 is always encouraging me when ever I take on a new task. I am so thankful for her ❤️. #122edchat
A1: When I go into classrooms, I look to see if Ss are working and collaborating or if they are just doing what’s asked. I also look at how the Ss acts when I do a brief walk by compared to a sit in. #122edchat
A1: Be real with people. Look for opportunities to brag on them. I walked by a Ss today that did not want to do the lesson that much, but did a really good job. I told her so. We have to be vocal. Our encouragement might be the only good word they hear. #122edchat
A2 Games with prizes, fun video clips they would normally watch - but put a science twist on it, anything with glassware and lab materials. ##WillWorkForFood#122edchat
Letting people vent without judging what they're complaining about is so helpful! Almost everyone I work with comes to me with problems because they know that it won't leave my hearing and that I won't think ill of them for needing to vent. #122edchat
A1. Take the time to tell your team, your friends, your family, and your followers that you believe in their abilities and that you are confident that they will succeed. #122edchat
A2: I'm always in the halls greeting everyone. Ss walk into the classroom everyday with a greeting. I stop a few just to have them look back at me when I greet them. I feel I need to connect to them everyday in a positive way. #122edchat
#122edchat Q2: Sharing kindness helps us all to be better in our respective posititions. How do you share kindness with those in your lives? #122edchat
A2: I just try to stay present and not be too swayed when things are going great or when things aren't. By being present I am able to more effectively be kind to others because I'm not emotionally reacting to the day around me. #122edchat
A2: We did the Great Kindness Challenge at our school- participated in checklist w/ Ss. I write thank you cards. say please/thank you. smile & try to greet everyone I pass. I stand at the door and greet all of my Ss with a high-five & a smile every period of every day. #122edchat
A2 - As in Q1, this is all about building meaningful, lasting relationships. Students and colleagues must know you have their back and want to make a positive difference in their lives. If you are truly about helping to make schools a better place, people follow. #122edchat
A3: Provide opportunities for them to bring their real lives into the classroom. The more students can learn about each other, the better they will be able to understand and empathize. #122edchat
A2: It’s important to be supportive in all elements to of classroom life. I praise Ss for taking risks and make a big deal about it for those kids who truly need it. Ss actually don’t mind being wrong at this point in the school year. #122edchat
A2 Share kindness by being available and willing to help with whatever. Also, I take the time to notice the small things they are doing and make sure I make a positive impact on them-not be a stressor. #122EdChat
A1. When you give someone responsibility, you are not only trusting them with the expectation of success, but you allow them to make mistakes. When you micromanage, it is discouraging & demotivating. Give responsibility, trust the person, & get out of the way. #122edchat
Hi! Erin from RI, first time on #122edchat
A1. My students show their engagement by choosing how they want to demonstrate mastery of the content to me. Art project, cookbook, annotated music playlist... they get to connect my class to their lives/passions #studentvoice
A3: The difference: Coming alongside of VS. Bearing another's burdens. When I empathize, I make space for ppl to talk. I don't try to answer or fix their problems. Sometimes, ppl just need you to receive what they're sharing & carry it for a bit to give them a break. #122edchat
A3: Ts and admins can help build a culture of empathy through constant modeling and focus on building/maintaining relationships.
Start w/ relationships, then move to content... never the reverse.
#122edchat
A2. It depends what were learning and doing. Playdough, objects in a bag which are hidden that they have to feel and draw with their senses, makerspace act, tech, experiment, making something creating, designing, learning game, etc. #122edchat
A2: We have a YouTube channel at our school that is run a lot like a television network. We have several different shows. We try to use as many different students as we can for anchors, writers, hosts, and actors. Kindness is a driving force for our network. #122edchat
A2: This year my focus has been to be intentional in my positivity. I am sending more letters and notes home to my Ss and I compliment my coworkers when they are amazing because they often are and it isn't always noticed in the busy environment we work in every day #122edchat
A1. When you show that you care, tell others that you believe in them, talk positively about them to others, trust them with important things, and help them succeed, you encourage them to believe in themselves and accomplish more than they thought possible. #122edchat
A2: I love being kind to others, sometimes with just little things like complimenting their hair or outfit, picking up something they dropped, or just sharing a smile. Other times it's deeper, like being patient, being forgiving, or being available to help. #122edchat
#122edchat Q3: How can we build a culture of empathy with our students? What strategies do you use to accomplish empathy? #122edchat who would you like to tag that models empathy ??
A2b: So many people have been so awesome to me this year as I teach like a peg legged pirate. I need to do a better job for others that others have done for me lately. #122edchat
#122edchat a2 I think I show kindness by making my translation exercises that are quick so that noone feels stressy or targeted. e.g one says a noun in spanish second person decodes in english, we travel lightly across rough ground #mfl#language
A3: I think that the best strategy is active listening. You don't have to solve their problems, you just have to be present and let them know that you care. #122edchat
A3: Lead by example. I am extremely empathetic so I talk about this w/ my Ss, what I feel, how it impacts my life. We address this in our Advisory time- video clips & discussion w/ small groups of Ss. Find authentic examples. #122edchat
#122edchat A2 When you have the time... Watch this 7 minute video "The Story of Always Believe" made by a student at my school. My goal is for my Ss to describe me with the #FruitsoftheSpirit This video shows the power of doing this. https://t.co/QyCVXGNNqe
A2~
~giving heartfelt words, small little actions that make a world of difference ~ our awesome ELL support teacher ~ I try to step back, help her shine in the newness of her journey with the littles
#122edchat
When I think "Tornado" I more think a whirlwind of negativity than a fun energy level. I am a pretty high-energy and opinionated person (Kind of an oversharer...), but it's a happy kind of energy! I am thinking you're the same way, Michael. #122edchat
A2: Individual white boards and markers for whole group lessons. It requires all students to respond. Students hold up their boards for an easy formative assessment. #122edchat
A2: Tech resources such as iReady, Khan Academy, NewsELA, etc. Weeklu feedback, notes of encouragement, celebrate successes. Curriculum resources. Support aides. Coaching moments #122edchat
#122edchat a3 I used @responsiveclass and @RJLAUSD in high school ....morning meetings and class circles make a great set up for empathy scenerious and developing a culture of caring
A2: I love being kind to others, sometimes with just little things like complimenting their hair or outfit, picking up something they dropped, or just sharing a smile. Other times it's deeper, like being patient, being forgiving, or being available to help. #122edchat
A2
Increase engagement and share kindness at the same time:
Be supportive with your actions and your words
Be friendy...smile!
Be kind, ask questions, show interest
Help those around you reach greatness
Build people up, don't tear them down
Be involved
#122edchat
A2: Take the time to notice model behavior. I sent a note to a student today because she comes into class every day, does what she is supposed to, and never causes any trouble. I told her she makes my job so much easier. She lit up. #122edchat
A3 - List below.
1. Make sure they know it’s meaning
2. Show and give examples
3. Promote a class that is kind
4. Allow for questions and mistakes
5. Avoid negativity at all costs
6. Listen intently
7. Have small individual and group chats. #122edchat
A3 Not sure this is empathic but I start the year with new middle schoolers by making sure everyone has someone to hang with. I open my room before school & host 2 lunch clubs for kids hang out, get work done, get help, etc. This is a safe & fun way to be a part of 6th #122edchat
A3 I have 6-7 year olds. So a lot of modeling and role play. Empathy is tough for many of them. We work a lot on how to be kind and treat others. #122edchat
A3: Morning meetings to share what Ss did over the weekend. We have a Social Emotional curriculum that helps us teach empathy. Role playing situations, emphasizing strengths of others, understanding that everyone is different. #122edchat
A3: Diverse texts really help. I make Ss "steelman" the other side of arguments often. Steelmanning means to give the most generous, strongest, and most charitable interpretation of their opponents views to consider whether or not the other side has a point! #122edchat
A3: I think that the best strategy is active listening. You don't have to solve their problems, you just have to be present and let them know that you care. #122edchat
A2a. Lending a listening ear. Helping others when they need it. Say hello and welcome Ss and thank them for coming. Wave good-bye to our Ss. #122edchat
This is my favorite part of the day! Being out in the hallway. So many opportunities to have contact with our kids. Those conversations have the power to change the course of the day. #122edchat
A2: Kindness can come in a form of a smile, a pat on the back, a small thank you gift, your presence + construction support+ your guidance and advice. The most important way to show kindness is to value the people around you with a genuine 💓and unconditional love.#122edchat
#122edchat Q2: Sharing kindness helps us all to be better in our respective posititions. How do you share kindness with those in your lives? #122edchat. Who would you like to tag who shares kindness ??
A3 We can build a culture of empathy with our Ss by modeling, by sharing picture books that demonstrate empathy, and having candidate discussions about it. #122EdChat
A3: By modeling it in the classroom with the Ss and co-teachers. Explaining level of expectation from the first day - we are a family, we respect and care for each other. I will give you all I have and I want it back :) We have team meetings and we talk a lot! #122edchat
A3 - List below.
1. Make sure they know it’s meaning
2. Show and give examples
3. Promote a class that is kind
4. Allow for questions and mistakes
5. Avoid negativity at all costs
6. Listen intently
7. Have small individual and group chats. #122edchat
A3. The ultimate goal is to create the atmosphere that enables teachers to meet the needs of all students. If teachers don’t take time to know students, how can we expect to reach them? #122edchat
A4: Was just having this conversation! We are 2/3 through the year, but we are constantly tweaking our Lab environment to make it a better experience for our incoming Ss. From modified expectations to new engagements; #studentvoice drives what we offer to our groups. #122edchat
A3
Differentiation allows for students to have a choice
to succeed on their level
to master concepts and skills and to feel successful and confident in the classroom
#122edchat
A3: At times, we have to tell Ss. I told my class one time that they have no idea what their classmates go home to. A lot of Ss nodded in agreement and it started a conversation. We got a lot closer as a class that day. We as Ts have to model that empathy as well. #122edchat
A3: Years ago I learned from a seasoned colleague to ask Ss lots of questions to see what they are thinking, and then ask more questions that guide them toward analyzing their own behavior. When they see that they negatively impact others, it helps them gain empathy. #122edchat
A3: Try ti stick up for someone when others speak poorly. “You don’t know what they are going through or the whole story.” There are always more than one perspective and somewhere in between - well, that’s where the absolute truth is- blame it in miscomm. #122edchat
A3: Model what empathy looks like. If a student expresses they are having a bad day, don't be afraid to say in front of others, "I'm so sorry you are having a bad day. Is there anything I can do to help? Is there anything you need that will make your day better?" #122edchat
A3. In our educational roles, it is vital that we model how empathy has power to influence a variety of contexts & interactions. Investing in the well-being of both our Ss & colleagues promotes a positive, empathic culture that makes classrooms & school a safe haven. #122edchat
A4: Thankful for the educational partnership that @PHausEDU and I have formed! Also thankful for the professional network of the #waledchat fam. #122edchat
A3: I have used discussion techniques coupled with texts that challenge common beliefs and integrate topics around perspective. We all need our beliefs challenged and we all need to see things from other’s perspectives. #122edchat
A3 Diff. shouldn’t look like differentiation, kids should be able to work at different paces and depths - problem is often it looks like learned helplessness to me. Giving access to curriculum and activities will increase engagement, but balance is difficult. #122edchat
#122edchat a3 Empathy is so much easier if you've been taught how to actively listen, reflect but not jump in to fix them or their problems. Some of it is practicing sentences like I hear what you're saying. Also we do need to teach body lang, esp. across cultures
#122edchat Q4: What professional relationships that I am grateful for? How do these colleagues help me be a better teacher/leader? Who would like to tag that you are grateful for?
A3b - Many skills that we want students to learn have nothing to do with grades. Empathy, kindness, problem solving, risk taking, positivity, confidence, etc. relate directly to our class atmosphere and attitudes. They also connect greatly to improved academics. #122edchat
A3:
We can build a culture of empathy by:
Modeling, modeling, modeling
Reading and sharing diverse texts
Creating and sharing diverse texts
Providing opportunities for students to practice empathy
Modeling, modeling, modeling
#122edchat
I had a 19 year old former student visit me after school today - we know each other as people. I had her as a 6th grader.... relationships matter. #122edchat
A4. Not sure if it's a "personal" relationship, but my Twitter PLN's have been such a blessing. I am fortunate to have a few T's in my school and district who push me to try to be better. #122edchat
A4: My #edfellows at @SCORE4Schools. There are not enough characters to describe what they mean to me. By the way, deadline to apply for next year's Fellowship is quickly approaching #TennesseeEducators. #122edchat
A3. In our educational roles, it is vital that we model how empathy has power to influence a variety of contexts & interactions. Investing in the well-being of both our Ss & colleagues promotes a positive, empathic culture that makes classrooms & school a safe haven. #122edchat
We all have something of value to give, even the burnt out cynical teacher who is retiring in three months. Recognizing people’s values and insight is key to growing in this job #122EdChat
A4: Very grateful for my MYP and DP coordinator (not on Twitter). They both are excellent educators, very patient and have my utmost respect. #122edchat
And then taking time to listen to the answers. Too often I find myself ready to bounce to the next person, but I have to condition myself to stick around to hear that story that might be delivered a little more slowly. #122edchat
Twitter family.....do yourself a favor and watch this video. Just took an unintentional 7 minute break from #122edchat because I could not stop. Makes me want to go into my classroom tomorrow and set the world on fire.
#122edchat A2 When you have the time... Watch this 7 minute video "The Story of Always Believe" made by a student at my school. My goal is for my Ss to describe me with the #FruitsoftheSpirit This video shows the power of doing this. https://t.co/QyCVXGNNqe
A4: I am very thankful for the admin that I work with who support me. I am also extremely thankful for my team and my lunch crew who make me laugh and allow me to vent and then refocus when needed! @MsSmith0908@MsDacchille@MrsChencharik@MrBamStafford#122edchat
A3. The more often we remain consistent in our pro-actions and reactions, the more times we are reaffirming to our students ‘this is who I am'. This creates the accepting atmosphere that embraces all our learners to flourish. #122edchat
A3. Modelling empathy to Ss is important and acting out situations may be necessary so that they can feel how others may feel in their shoes. Reading stories and discussing then with Ss. #122edchat
A5: It needs to be less of a "top down; you need this because I said so" approach. If we listen, really hear what they are saying, then and only then is when the magic happens. Our Ss know where they want to go, but they need us to help get them to their destination. #122edchat
A5: To better communication Ts and admins must provide multiple avenues to Ss. Face-to-face and virtual. Synchronous and asynchronous.
Meet them where they are and where they're comfortable.
#122edchat
A5: Clear procedures and expectations upfront result in smooth communication for the rest of the year (more or less!). Getting to know their hearts before their brains is crucial in developing mutual respect. #122edchat
#122edchat A3 I build empathy with my Ss through personal life stories I share with them. A powerful one is when I was verbally bullied every day in 5th and 6th grade. If you have #beentheredonethat with what the kids are going through, you will inspire them.
A4: I ask for my Ts to plan for misconceptions. Then they work to build extensions/ corrections in their plans. As they teach, they know lessons change, pacing changes, but they know what ext/cor to utilize. #122edchat
A4: I have two teachers who I work with who are progressive educators as well - always willing to step outside of their comfort zone and do something fun, challenging, and new. Other than them, my Twitter #PLN is by far the most inspiration I get as an educator. #122edchat
A4 allow for passion projects and allow voice and choice. Set learning targets but allow for students to choice their learning adventure #GPS approach, there is more then one way to get there #122edchat
A4: I am so grateful for my mentor and friend @ErinLiKent, my husband (also a teacher), my next-door colleagues, and my incredible Twitter PLN. Seriously, Twitter has been a game-changer for me. #122edchat
Grateful for all of you gathered here! #122edchat, thanks for keeping the conversation going tonight. Special thanks to our gracious hosts, @woodard_julie and @cwilcoxKSU for being a light for #kindness in this world. If you have not already done so, find some folks to follow. :)
One last Voting plug #122edchat. If you haven't voted yet or within the last 24 hours, please help me out. You can vote every 24 hours. https://t.co/Z1ifM1Siag
A4: The administration @westhillstigers & @MarshallCoSch allow me to try new things and be innovative. Our community is great as well. I am very grateful for them all. #122edchat
A4 My pals/edu-partners in crime are @mrsalisonstein & @slhistmcms. We ask each other for help, bounce ideas off of each other, read the same edu-books, share same pedagogical approaches to teaching. I could not maintain my school sanity without Alison and Sharon! #122edchat
A4 I am lucky and honored to have many colleagues that help me be better educator. My school colleagues are there to support & inspire me, but are not afraid to reel me in either. They give me balance. My #pln motivates and inspire me. #122EdChat
A4 I try to get rid of the weeds and the things that could get a student “hung up” - as far as activities go. Again with balance, I think you still have to show them how to organize and be prepared with materials. I don’t just do that for them. #122edchat
A4: I am grateful for @travislape . He is constantly working to learn more about education, encourages others to be connected, and pushes me try new things and be more of a leader. Plus, he is always positive & focused on kids! #122edchat
A4~
~eternally grateful for the mentorship, time, resources, sharing etc. from my colleague, friend @MatthewXJoseph ... I’m a better teacher, advocate, Friend, wife, mother, sister b/c he helped see the greatness in me when I didn’t see it in myself 😊
#122edchat
A4b:And my admin. For appreciating me - whatever me is going to show up that day- A tap dancing t-rex or the one who cries in the elevator... 😂 and for me and allowing me to be vulnerable and don’t say no to me. #122edchat
#122edchat A4:so many- The two other sci tt- one makes me laugh and can say what no ost else can. And the other is always there with a note and a check in.
A4: In my current district I am blessed to work with colleagues who really love kids, and I've had the opportunity to co-teach with a few of them. I'm also grateful for my Twitter #PLN, from whom I've learned and grown so much as a professional! #122edchat
#122edchat A4: My team is a group of amazing people and amazing teachers. @mrejkellyasd4 Special accolades to @mrstutskey since we share a classroom, share a lot of students, and share a lot of ideas!
A5: As much emphasis is placed on the classroom, recess and playtime is just as important fields for learning. I don't how many things I have learned were going on while playing all-time quarterback or HORSE with my kids. Meeting them where they are is huge. #122edchat
In a world full of critics! YES! Everyone is waiting in line to tell you that you stink...why not flip the script on someone tomorrow and tell them that they are wonderful? Love this, Matt! #122edchat
A5: Formative assessment and small chunking of instruction. This is the number 1 tool that answers whether or not students understand what we are saying. Remember just because we've said it or taught it doesn't mean Ss have learned it or understood it! #122edchat
A5 Definitely #responsiveclassroom. Taking the first 6 weeks to really build community and get to know each other. Be authentic, really listen when they share about their weekend and events. #122edchat
My students + I frequently talk about BE Oakley's idea of "radical softness" as a form of empathy, which encourages us to think about the activism that we're equipped to do depending on the privilege we have + how we can make space for alternative forms of activism. #122EdChat
A4. I am grateful for those professional relationships that push me. @Blondieloves4 has been my most instrumental to date. But me Twitter peeps, have been the most recent. #122edchat
A5: My communication with students increased & was of a higher quality when I started positively greeting every student at the door every day. I get a sense of their mood. They know I care, see that I'm ready to talk w/ them, & know each day is a new day #122edchat
A5
Talking to ss reflecting with ss meeting and collaborating with ss conferencing with ss
Everything is about the ss
What do they need from you?
They need you to be present to hear what they have to say, then they will know that their learning is important to you
#122edchat
A5: I like to keep an open line of communication with my Ss - I want them to feel comfortable talking to me. I like them to know that I am available to them academically, emotionally, or socially. #122edchat
A5: To build stronger communication with students, build stronger relationships. It's all about relationships.

Classroom Culture: It's All About Relationships - Tonya Gilchrist #122edchat
A5: For me, nothing beats a friendly one-on-one conversation about anything at all to build a positive bond and relationship. This often leads to more in-depth communications that are reciprocal, collaborative, and purposeful. #122edchat
A3: Model, model model empathy. Start conversations and discuss whenever an opportunity allows ... whether during a book chat or a recent event. My Ss love those kinds of discussions. I constantly give them scenarios to put themselves in someone else's shoes. #122edchat
#122edchat Q3: How can we build a culture of empathy with our students? What strategies do you use to accomplish empathy? #122edchat who would you like to tag that models empathy ??
A5 Would love more time to discuss restorative practice, more resources to figure out why a kid is struggling to not get stuff done during class, not just say - go to help session. We need to dig deeper to help kids figure out what they need. #122edchat
A5 Be available! If you aren’t present mentally & physically, then how can kids communicate with you? I'm free before & after school & during lunch. Kids email me at anytime w/ questions or concerns/ Some Ts will not answer “work” email after ‘contract hours’ but I do. #122edchat
A5 - List again

A4. My PLN has been invaluable! Surrounding myself with rockstar young educators through @yesriorg & connecting with awesome teachers around the country has given me so much inspiration I’ve been able to bring into my classroom! #122edchat#MasteryChat
Thank you, Craig! You are appreciated! I hate that I missed #122edchat tonight. I was trying to catch up with work after a trip to @BNBuzz this afternoon.

#122edchat a4 Again Devil's Advocate I don't think I can do it all, so I spend a lot of time making sure students are captains of activities, that they are checking who has been missed, they are also active modifiers of many of their work.
Thanks #122edchat was fun today.
A4: I’m so grateful for Ts like @drjrocks76 who I recently reconnected with. I miss her and all my old peeps @ShueMedillMS but glad we can talk strategies and share ideas. #122edchat
You are absolutely right. Some people are not aware of their impact on others around them. We should acknowledge their efforts and willingness to go above and beyond. #122edchat
