  • jpotterx May 30 @ 3:07 PM EDT
Hi all! Haven't used SPG yet but that's due to our hardware limitations. Looks a v good package tho. #adechat
  • aramski May 30 @ 3:07 PM EDT
A1: still in 'computer-club' stage; it's a PYPX Coding Club, so starting small. K-5 has 1:1 iPads, for this we use 3 iPads #ADEchat
  • TeachMeGG May 30 @ 3:07 PM EDT
@Joe_Moretti Gerard here from Madrid. I've used SPG and @gotynker with Y6, so far so good! Very good, structured resources! #adechat

  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:08 PM EDT
Q1: pupils reflected on their own work and said they used code thinking in other classes, like breaking up a difficult task #ADEchat
  • MirCWalsh May 30 @ 3:08 PM EDT
A1. SPG is the great intro to Swift and shows that Everyone Can Code. No one has yet failed to complete the initial challenges. #ADEchat
  • TeachMeGG May 30 @ 3:09 PM EDT
the quick repeat after making a silly mistake has gotten us all though! #adechat
    In reply to @MirCWalsh
  • ThatEdTechGuy May 30 @ 3:09 PM EDT

    In reply to @Joe_Moretti
  • Joe_Moretti May 30 @ 3:09 PM EDT
Can we use the A1 A2 format #adechat on the replies for those that read through the thread later… many thanks. (teacher hat on).
  • aramski May 30 @ 3:09 PM EDT
A1: block coding is good for LS, but SPG makes coding fun and accessible #ADEchat
  • MirCWalsh May 30 @ 3:10 PM EDT
Yep. I find portal practice is the one that gets newbies right away. #ADEchat
    In reply to @TeachMeGG
  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:10 PM EDT
A1: difficult thing: everything's in English, that was challenging for my pupils, so I've translated every challenge #ADEchat
  • aDesignEdu May 30 @ 3:11 PM EDT
Hi everyone, Anders Randler #ADE2015 sending you Q2 in this amazing #ADEchat .
  • MrTullock May 30 @ 3:11 PM EDT
Hi, Paul from Newcastle class of #ADE2017 sorry I'm late #adechat
  • Joe_Moretti May 30 @ 3:11 PM EDT
#adechat Absolutely, you have to integrate your ‘normal’(?) classroom elements with the SPG..
    In reply to @liesbeth080180
  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:12 PM EDT
A2: no, just worked through the first module. Am now busy with building a coding curriculum for @DeStapsteen will use it! #ADEchat
  • marienkoen May 30 @ 3:12 PM EDT
Ed with @liesbeth080180. Our students don't struggle with the code being in English, but with the instruction. Hail to the teacher! #ADEchat

    In reply to @liesbeth080180
  • MrTullock May 30 @ 3:12 PM EDT
A1: Introduced to my class last half term. ❤️ed it. Found it the next step on from block coding & were fascinated to see it written #adechat
  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:13 PM EDT
#adechat basically every language we learn is coding. So I use coding through history as well for my lessons. To give a different view
    In reply to @Joe_Moretti
  • BronwynWrites May 30 @ 3:13 PM EDT
A2: I've only had girls work through Swift Playground on their own up to now. #ADEchat
  • Joe_Moretti May 30 @ 3:13 PM EDT
Yeah, I think people underestimate the ‘extra’ put in to make things work in class. Well done! #adechat
    In reply to @liesbeth080180
  • ThatEdTechGuy May 30 @ 3:13 PM EDT
thanks. It’s a great tool for building confidence with those with little or no coding experience. So simple to use. #ADEChat

  • LyndseyBalfe May 30 @ 3:15 PM EDT
I have been using SPG with 2nd years and they love it, ive been surprised by how quick they have picked up the basics #ADEchat
  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:15 PM EDT
I kept the coding language in English though as to not to confuse them later #adechat
    In reply to @aDesignEdu
  • marienkoen May 30 @ 3:15 PM EDT
What programming language is @LanttoSari using? #ADEchat
  • LadyWesner May 30 @ 3:15 PM EDT
#ADEChat A1&2: Haven't tried it w students but for me, coding always seemed so inaccessible & daunting before @SwiftCodePG now I can code!
  • MrTullock May 30 @ 3:15 PM EDT
A1: We used @BookCreatorApp to document our SPG journey. The video capture & screen shots of code really helped us to understand #adechat
  • BronwynWrites May 30 @ 3:16 PM EDT
Byte is so cool. Kids love 'it'! #ADEchat
  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:16 PM EDT

    In reply to @aDesignEdu
  • Joe_Moretti May 30 @ 3:16 PM EDT
Q2 - something @aDesignEdu and I are particularly interested in, would really like to see a central ‘swopping’ of work in progress #adechat
  • TeachMeGG May 30 @ 3:16 PM EDT
So true, even for teachers with no coding experience.. with the iTunes U course and iBooks.. the learning is so structured! #adechat

    Way to go Lindsay!!! #ADEchat
    In reply to @LadyWesner, @SwiftCodePG

A2: not tried it yet, but will hopefully next term #adechat
  • Joe_Moretti May 30 @ 3:18 PM EDT
The portfolio is something I've seen ignored in some schools with students left totally without guidance. #adechat Simple to introduce.
    In reply to @MrTullock, @BookCreatorApp
  • LadyWesner May 30 @ 3:18 PM EDT
Hey hey! Finally not travelling or sleeping during #ADEchat time. Hope all is good in Jozi!
    In reply to @BronwynWrites, @SwiftCodePG
  • BronwynWrites May 30 @ 3:18 PM EDT
There really is no excuse now, actually. We're relooking at curriculum to integrate coding. #ADEchat
    • TeachMeGG May 30 @ 3:16 PM EDT

    In reply to @MrTullock
  • BronwynWrites May 30 @ 3:20 PM EDT
A2: old Design & Tech subject is being transformed (& renamed?) to incorporate @SwiftCodePG #ADEchat
  • jimmclean1 May 30 @ 3:21 PM EDT
A portfolio is essential imho as it would allow learners to try out code e.g. On Lgo we do or mindstorms #ADEchat
  • ajegbers May 30 @ 3:21 PM EDT
Read an article yesterday about how coding should be a tough process. With obstacles and tough decisions. Should we glorify it? #ADEChat
    In reply to @LadyWesner, @SwiftCodePG
  • Joe_Moretti May 30 @ 3:22 PM EDT
So, on to Q3. Whenever a new SPG has arrived a lot of interest is generated.. So… #adechat What would you like to see developed?
  • MirCWalsh May 30 @ 3:22 PM EDT
There's still got obstacles but we should celebrate it's being so accessible #ADEchat
    In reply to @ajegbers, @LadyWesner, @SwiftCodePG
  • BronwynWrites May 30 @ 3:23 PM EDT
    A2: Bought my son an iMac this w/kend. He's doing a @udemy #xcode course on it. #ADEchat
  • LadyWesner May 30 @ 3:23 PM EDT
Ah, more of team 🇿🇦in the house! Please share the article link. My feeling is that vital competencies should never be inaccessible #ADEchat
    In reply to @ajegbers, @SwiftCodePG
  • aDesignEdu May 30 @ 3:23 PM EDT
Completely depends on how you go about the process of teaching coding… with SPG it’s an amazing inspiring activity! #adechat
    In reply to @ajegbers, @LadyWesner, @SwiftCodePG
  • mevr_verstappen May 30 @ 3:24 PM EDT
Time for #ADEchat, finished my 2nd correction. Just have to catch up with the questions
  • BronwynWrites May 30 @ 3:24 PM EDT
    #portfolios allow for #reflection - an essential #learning discipline #ADEchat
    • jimmclean1 May 30 @ 3:21 PM EDT
A portfolio is essential imho as it would allow learners to try out code e.g. On Lgo we do or mindstorms #ADEchat
  • ajegbers May 30 @ 3:24 PM EDT
Accessible, yes but we also need to temper with reality. Block coding if any sort simplifies a process that, in reality, is tough. #ADEchat
    In reply to @MirCWalsh, @LadyWesner, @SwiftCodePG
  • mevr_verstappen May 30 @ 3:24 PM EDT
Hi, Vivian here, from the Netherlands. Ready to implement coding at @UrsulaHorn next year #adechat
  • LyndseyBalfe May 30 @ 3:25 PM EDT
I havent gotten to xcode yet, i was nervous about using it but Swift has made me more confident about coding #ADEchat
  • LadyWesner May 30 @ 3:25 PM EDT
Which is why @SwiftCodePG is different - learning a #coding language & not just playing w blocks - more realistic & transferrable #ADEChat
    In reply to @ajegbers, @MirCWalsh, @SwiftCodePG, @SwiftCodePG
  • BronwynWrites May 30 @ 3:25 PM EDT
Problem solving and opportunities for failure are part and parcel of #coding and essential life skills #ADEchat
    • MirCWalsh May 30 @ 3:22 PM EDT

  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:26 PM EDT
A3 How much is really necessary? Good to diversify but at some point we have to do research on how it changes / helps our pupils #adechat
  • Joe_Moretti May 30 @ 3:27 PM EDT
A3. I’m getting the feeling that few have taken the steps into SPG creation. @aDesignEdu this may be something we should include #adechat
  • ajegbers May 30 @ 3:27 PM EDT
    Looking for it #ADEchat
    In reply to @LadyWesner, @SwiftCodePG
  • mevr_verstappen May 30 @ 3:27 PM EDT

    In reply to @Joe_Moretti
  • aDesignEdu May 30 @ 3:27 PM EDT

A3 Part2. In the forthcoming Swift SPG book (with @danielbbudd) that we are working on… #adechat
  • TeachMeGG May 30 @ 3:28 PM EDT
A3 I feel the added on product.. (we have D&D), doesn't really add as much to the learning experience as I expected #ADEchat
  • aramski May 30 @ 3:29 PM EDT
A3: anything and everything! => Internet Of Things #ADEchat
  • Joe_Moretti May 30 @ 3:29 PM EDT

    In reply to @TeachMeGG
  • MrTullock May 30 @ 3:30 PM EDT

A3 about creating SPG-books… that’s an altogether more difficult task. Definitely possible… but start with simple PG in Xcode #adechat

See @Joe_Moretti through @mevr_verstappen I still take part in the #ADEchat 😃 Coding will be at my department @UrsulaHorn @iPadklasSSU 🤘🏻

  • ajegbers May 30 @ 3:33 PM EDT
    Sorry #ADEchat
    • ajegbers May 30 @ 3:32 PM EDT
https://t.co/8ywl3O5BfM and please, I am really into teaching coding from early on. But for me it's not about language but rather the skills
      In reply to @LadyWesner, @SwiftCodePG
  • BronwynWrites May 30 @ 3:34 PM EDT
Coding shouldn't be done 'just for the sake of it, as it's fashionable'. Must add value. Ss can find value through voice & choice. #adechat
  • Joe_Moretti May 30 @ 3:34 PM EDT
A4. @aDesignEdu are you going to say a bit about what you’ve been doing here and why you like it? #adechat
  • MirCWalsh May 30 @ 3:35 PM EDT
Just one opinion. Plenty of evidence to say otherwise! #ADEchat
    In reply to @ajegbers
  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:35 PM EDT
A4 looked at it, started it, now stopped for a while. Would like to learn though. But first our coding curriculum #adechat need some #grit 😉
  • ajegbers May 30 @ 3:36 PM EDT
Truly! That's why we introduce the process in Gr 1. I just think we need to tell students that it won't all be a cakewalk? #adechat
    In reply to @MirCWalsh
  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:36 PM EDT
But we always should look at more than one opinion, we could learn from the article en adjust our program. #adechat

    In reply to @ajegbers, @LadyWesner, @SwiftCodePG
  • MirCWalsh May 30 @ 3:36 PM EDT
I think if you start them with the basics it is easier. Skip the basics and it can go downhill fast! #ADEchat
    In reply to @ajegbers
  • mevr_verstappen May 30 @ 3:37 PM EDT
A4: looked into it, but it’s a step to far at the moment, first I would like to embed coding-skills at @UrsulaHorn #VMBOT #adechat
  • ajegbers May 30 @ 3:37 PM EDT
Ps haven't had a good twitter debate in a while. Thanks. #ADEchat 😉😀
    In reply to @MirCWalsh

  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:39 PM EDT

    In reply to @ajegbers, @MirCWalsh
  • MrTullock May 30 @ 3:39 PM EDT
A4: not ready for that yet #ADEchat

But maybe also learning by design, when they get further on in teh program and start to develop themselves. #ADEchat

And inspiring for the children who are not naturally inclined to computer coding. Gives them a sense of why. #ADEchat

A5 use a lot of paper as well to draw out the possibilities to solving the problem. Love using pseudocode! #ADEchat
  • BronwynWrites May 30 @ 3:51 PM EDT
Yes! This is great. Poor kids. #ADEchat Frustration, thinking, resolution, reflection. All those emotions! #lovecoding #makesnosense

#ADEChat A5 Yessss... not that exact video but that concept when I have taught coding offline to youth groups. It's a good one!

I think this is the basics. Let kids experience the do coding all the time en than take the step to coding language #ADEchat
  • aDesignEdu May 30 @ 3:52 PM EDT
And the last one, Q6. What do we want from our creators…:) #adechat
  • aramski May 30 @ 3:52 PM EDT
How is this any different from solving at Math problem or learning grammar of a foreign (to you) language?? 😌 🙂 #ADEchat

I think a lot of people would find coding more accessible if they experienced pseudo code early on. I use it all the time. #adechat

Somehow it always already slipped in my teaching method. Just never knew I used it 😂 #ADEchat

The key is to take fear out. Ts don't all know coding. They fear it. E.g. Can't ask German teacher to teach French.Just let Ss code #ADEchat
  • aDesignEdu May 30 @ 3:54 PM EDT
Actually when you think about how to solve a problem, you think in a logical sequence…Pseudo Code. So yes, it’s great! #adechat

  • liesbeth080180 May 30 @ 3:55 PM EDT
But maybe let teachers who have an apt for it, teach it. We don't all have to be generalists. Just like your example. #ADEchat
