Hey guys how’s it hanging?
Hey , is on break, but I want to know what you think about DT anyway. How about this image! https://t.co/dTY4iqyRKp
Hey guys how’s it hanging? is on summer holiday yet convos happen
So let's discuss with since the regularly scheduled chat isn't occurring. Let's start with a question... coming up.
is homework tonight... so let's throw something together impromptu style!
anytime what r your thoughts on the squiggly line?
Q1:Hey MERIT - what do you like about design thinking in the classroom?
Okay, great!@@TahiraEdu and I were writing up some questions in a Google Doc, but we'll pause.
Chandra & Imani - GO FOR IT! :) You both get the next Qs to ask.
A1 Everything can B applied in curriculum, culture, environment, social, assessment, space, systems etc
A1: I like that it gives students more of a voice and that they are the ones who drive the direction.
A1: I love the concept of DT and how open-ended it is. But that's also what makes it so difficult to implement.
Awesome U R aware of right? DT Guru
A1: Although I'm new to it, I'm excited about how closely it ties classroom and "real world"
A1: I love how encourages Ss to creatively & collaboratively solve problems... Not just 1 way!
yes and it abt & allows for possibilities Focus & Flare Ebbs & Flows https://t.co/LeEeqI23bz
A1: I love the concept of DT and how open-ended it is. But that's also what makes it so difficult to implement.
A1: DT changes the dynamic of the classroom. Teachers coach, students lead and learning deepens. IMHO
I love how it goes along with quote ask kids "What problem do you want to solve? https://t.co/u49yGcH83C
A1 Everything can B applied in curriculum, culture, environment, social, assessment, space, systems etc
Q1 Students solve real world problems with empathy
And does DT with Kindergartners! https://t.co/GaCGm3VEOX
A1: I love how encourages Ss to creatively & collaboratively solve problems... Not just 1 way!
Another similar Q via "we will be known by the problems we solve"
A1 Hi all! Just jumping in now. I love that it encourages collaboration!
A1: I love the process of design thinking! DT is a process & a mindset - opens kids to thinking anything is possible
welcome to tonight’s chat is brought 2 U by Peeps & We thank U
- What challenges do you see for DT in your classroom? https://t.co/toGWdYjgbo
A1: I love the concept of DT and how open-ended it is. But that's also what makes it so difficult to implement.
YES! So much how the real world functions-an ideal "boss" guides & facilitates their staff https://t.co/UKIBblgJ1r
A1: DT changes the dynamic of the classroom. Teachers coach, students lead and learning deepens. IMHO
A1: I love how has Ss thinking in a way that prepares them for real world. No multiple choice answers!
YES! Love this And real world makes it meaningful to most. https://t.co/3KBAdMMOvb
A1: Although I'm new to it, I'm excited about how closely it ties classroom and "real world"
A1: I love how DT begins with empathy and emphasizes the process of problem solving
Children getting creative confidence.... problem solving#MeritKCI
Q1 I can't wait to implement d.thinking into lessons this year. Kids feel so empowered when solving real problems
AND no worksheets! :) https://t.co/aR1cGqQAIM
A1: I love how has Ss thinking in a way that prepares them for real world. No multiple choice answers!
A1 Students solve real world problems with empathy
Q2 (if allowed): how do you/can you imagine implementing DT in HS English classroom? KCI
DT opens classrooms to the multiple talents of Ss. Iterations honor creativity. Collaboration blds connections outside of school
So true! Last year my kinders did a challenge focusing on making our school a better place!
I'm excited to use it in my classroom; I do a car design project with Audi designers.
Love the impromptu 2nite! Thx in action!! https://t.co/Sl1zH5TW2j
welcome to tonight’s chat is brought 2 U by Peeps & We thank U
With middle school, trying to find a DT idea that focuses on my subject & keeping the mindset open
A2: I used to ask my HS students to solve problems from stories we read, while in character. https://t.co/zKyjtpk86S
Q2 (if allowed): how do you/can you imagine implementing DT in HS English classroom? KCI
Yes to hands on learning!!
A2 DT is relevant in many ways 1 ex designing for others & removing Self from solution, Ss + Empathy= helps me design
A2: DT is relevant with my work because watching Ss take ownership of the problem and solution is incredibly powerful.
So looking at real world probs and also thinking about perspective/characterization?
Q1: What do you like about in the classroom? takeover
It's hard to let go and watch kids go into what calls "the suck" https://t.co/J8sUSoKqb1
With middle school, trying to find a DT idea that focuses on my subject & keeping the mindset open
A2 I think empathy is going to be created unlike ever before.
A3 No gremlins From day 1 always felt sure DT was the W2G w/ my Ss & teaching style.
A2: The ideate stage - I love that Ss are encouraged to come up with multiple solutions - the 1st answer is usually not the best.
A1: My students can be active participants. PLUS DT is helping me figure out the pieces for project based learning.
DT makes learning fun, engaging, and relevant. Students are steering the ship.
A2: DT can be used as a prompt for a persuasive essay/advertisement/call to action in a HS English classroom
I agree - it will be a learning curve, for sure - but the end result will be worth it! Many "woo-hoo" moments!
Its amazing 2 see brainstorm on paper vs whiteboard
just followed you. also gr8 resource in this area!
A2 My friend shows video clips of movies and has students Rewrite the endings.
A2: in HS ELA, consider how words impact the world. Go from there. Not every DT lesson ends with tech.
Yes - exactly - It is interesting to see how Scout from TKAM would solve today's issues.
I find MS to be “ripe” for DT esp w/ empathy & curricular topics
Which method do you prefer & why?
A2: Ss learn by doing and interacting with others DT allows for both social and academic curriculum
Paper causes brain freeze Whiteboard endless possibilities
A2 One need not use DT steps completely but use one or two as it suits the purpose...
DT could bring creativity to science subjects Like Biology! Like dreaming up new future biotech possiblities?
Still stuck on paper... thoughts on how to transition?
maybe Im misunderstanding “not every DT lesson ends w/ tech” what does that mean?
one of my DT challenges this year was using DT to solve problems in TKAM
I agree. I think my focus will be social issues. Take advantage of the empathy part.
Not a Q, just a thought - how much better would the whole world be if we all started every idea process with empathy?
I agree! I also love that I can see my student solving real world problems! https://t.co/Fqfws91720
A1: I love the process of design thinking! DT is a process & a mindset - opens kids to thinking anything is possible
Q2 What aspect of DT is most relevant to your classroom? takeover
why are you stuck? (gathering need finding b4 solution :)
Have you tried Padlet or another similar app that allows for unlimited brainstorming?
I did my MERIT13 project on social justice issues https://t.co/5xKowXWKLf
I agree. I think my focus will be social issues. Take advantage of the empathy part.
Thanks! How do I get a hold of these?
Yes! As a teacher coach, I see using certain parts of DT to get teachers to collaborate. https://t.co/M8qyIiCBGW
A2 One need not use DT steps completely but use one or two as it suits the purpose...
Yes Gr8 space 2 explore History & Novels R also spaces 2explore Plus MATH esp
It sure can! DT can be applied to any problem solving, composition or construction context https://t.co/FeSpsJR0a3
A2: DT can be used as a prompt for a persuasive essay/advertisement/call to action in a HS English classroom
A2: My Ss always wait for ME to give them questions. I like how DT allows the Ss to come up with questions.
A2: Think of real world problem that your Ss are interested in... Have them develop interview Qs to build empathy, etc.
As an (specifically ) it is second nature to incorporate DT into the creative process
Just wrote a reflection of my first official introduction to DT. Shared some ideas. Feedback? https://t.co/77uHUaHJfZ
hmm… I might be old school yet tech tends to rarely enter into the fray Keep it Low-Res 4 as long as possible
DT is about the possibilities, not the answer. The process is empowering to Ss.
Design thinking allows students to feel their their thoughts matter- increases student buy-in.
yet I do see your point where others wld think like that
Oh man - can you share that with me at some point in the next two weeks? Would love to get ideas!!
DT elevated my project based learning classroom to intention driven learning environment https://t.co/qZQd2LtYtu
A1: My students can be active participants. PLUS DT is helping me figure out the pieces for project based learning.
I agree! DT is a cool way to help Ss realize that there isn't always one right way, especially in English.
I think most DT lessons have the tech if it's necessary. DT does not equal automatic tech use https://t.co/US12tuOktu
maybe Im misunderstanding “not every DT lesson ends w/ tech” what does that mean?
I believe giving skills to S is more imp then the content itself.content ll b forgotten but skills ll remain for life.. DT helps
Yes! Power in process! https://t.co/rczKa0JEti
DT is about the possibilities, not the answer. The process is empowering to Ss.
A1 I like the ownership students feel to their own learning with DT and how it empowers them.
Makes sense. We do a "community awareness" research project at EOY; would love to reframe it as DT prob https://t.co/QyevRUHHQx
It sure can! DT can be applied to any problem solving, composition or construction context https://t.co/FeSpsJR0a3
A2: DT can be used as a prompt for a persuasive essay/advertisement/call to action in a HS English classroom
yes Ive used it as a Coach (teacher) of DT & as a DTer it scratches the surface yet the 1D aspect of it limits IMO
A3: Gremlin says, "You teach ELA; too hard." Self-compassion says, "It'll be hard, but I can take an aspect of DT & start there."
Holy katzenjamer kids! That's what I did w my ninth graders this year https://t.co/rxngP8BcKb
A2: I used to ask my HS students to solve problems from stories we read, while in character. https://t.co/zKyjtpk86S
Q2 (if allowed): how do you/can you imagine implementing DT in HS English classroom? KCI
My gremlin loves to tell me that I will fail and embarrass myself. Thank goodness I'm at a Growth Mindset school
Dan, ur ears must have been ringing!!
Remind me tomorrow - I can give you the site and more info
woahhh that sounds rad; tell me more?
love anything that increases student buy-in
Absolutely. The content is the vehicle to teach the skill.
My gremlin was screaming in my ear all day today. Shut up, Gremlin!
This is so https://t.co/UUUtRbowK0
A2: in HS ELA, consider how words impact the world. Go from there. Not every DT lesson ends with tech.
Yes! It shows Ss that their ideas matter & they can make a difference.
I made friends with my gremlin He keeps me from striving for perfection
Q2: I think empathy & reflection are the 2 most important steps - E is the WHY and R is the can we make it better?
As would say, YOU are stronger than your gremlin. https://t.co/pp8U0N6J7R
My gremlin loves to tell me that I will fail and embarrass myself. Thank goodness I'm at a Growth Mindset school
Q3: How do you connect DT with your curriculum or standards in a meaningful way?
Empathy as part of DT makes kids think outside their immediate world. Can't wait for first graders to practice this
A2 Empathy:having students think from another persons point of view helps them get outside themselves.
Q3 In what ways does your gremlin (inner critic) hinder you from approaching DT in your classroom?
yes! Though if people are at the center and you are using DT as your process, you may not have to Reframe much
A3: In , instead of a 1st semester final/assessment, I had students create a 5 minute video about one of their passions
A2 Thinking from the other persons perspective to understand and define the problem to solve is essential
I'm always battling my little gremlins!
Gave my S,DT based PBL.. where they had to find correlation bet'n temp, evaporation...They had 2 device a toy model for it.. 1/2
We haven't been using DT, but I think it would make things so much more clear for kids!
Brainstorming for multiple ideas and iterations of solutions applies to all subjects
A4 you cant call it if there is not a User + Empathy DT is abt others not self Its NOT a Blanket either
Q4: Empathy plays a role because good designs are built on a solid understanding of people, their beliefs, and their values.
A3-1: Creating a DT that my Ss can connect with. Something they have personal experience with or have observed.
. Absolutely. In a language classroom, this is an awesome excuse to interview someone in the TL
Remember to follow all these awesome peeps who came together 4 this chat tonight!!
A3The Gremlins are whispering, "this is going to be loud."
I found PBL to feel more project mgmt than elevating thinking or solving problems; DT amped it up for me
A4 so an equation to represent the correlation, finding temp, location, windspeed, plant cover etc. so a multidisciplinary PBL..
A3: So fun to incorporate challenges revolving around fairy tales... Story structure, problem/solution!
DT puts users & needs square in the focus; it has forced my Ss to be so much more intentional & purpose driven
A3: Gremlin: Everyone else is learning all of this so much faster than you. Me: I may not be first, but I'll get there.
design and improv! Yes and!!
A3: My inner critic tells me there isn't enough time to do design thinking well & cover the standards - lying gremlin
Time to kick some Gremlin behind! Mine keeps peeking at me from around every corner!
Yes and! https://t.co/sDQy5N0Hqs
A3: So fun to incorporate challenges revolving around fairy tales... Story structure, problem/solution!
A3: My gremlin says DT doesn't align with RtI Intervention. My creativity is going to show Mr. G!
that best describes my classroom now; we do very little without intention
Q2 topic of Global warming Central theme in bio - effects on animals, plants, people - DT ideas on what Ss might do KCL
DT can be playful & solve sticky big problems! https://t.co/sDQy5N0Hqs
A3: So fun to incorporate challenges revolving around fairy tales... Story structure, problem/solution!
it isn't that PBL is wrong; I was just caught up in the paper trails & organizers rather than meaning
Also, I think DT more real world lang. Not just langof school. Adults & Ss can be using same language 2. https://t.co/OlpKNIgeWL
I found PBL to feel more project mgmt than elevating thinking or solving problems; DT amped it up for me
I think THIS is exactly why human connection is SO important. https://t.co/Avllm1xRMC
I think that's what makes DT so powerful: Tech is just a tool to free up brain cells!
Exciting realization about DT. Once it gets started, there is no stopping. No going back! The students won't allow it.
Ya that's what was the purpose of my PBL. So kids come up with solutions to increase water capacity of the state.
Why can’t “global Warming” b the DT Challenge?
A3: My gremlin says sure, you'll try and then give up and revert back to your old ways when you're tired and stressed.
very true.. the more laps, the deeper the Ss dig into the process & shift their mindsets https://t.co/82tfpb9wCl
Exciting realization about DT. Once it gets started, there is no stopping. No going back! The students won't allow it.
Oh gremlin you get outta here: hmw get Mike's math up to speed & Kelly's reading on track via empathy? https://t.co/U4EeezkI60
A3: My gremlin says DT doesn't align with RtI Intervention. My creativity is going to show Mr. G!
. great point! And if ss are comfortable= laughing, fun, huge drive to put up more sticky notes
Getting students to focus on something easily erased
I say thee nay gremlin! Ss can get up to reading speed by reading w problem solving purpose
Yes! The power of post-it's!
Q4 (sorry, posted too soon before) How do you connect DT to standards and curric MEANINGFULLY?
thank you kindly for the woot woot plugs
well, I was thinking GW as the challenge seek out views/needs of others & from there opportunity for design emerges
A4: As Roni mentioned our work is human-centered, and empathy in dt is essential for creating prototypes that meet people's needs
oh that sounds a worthy endeavor
https://t.co/AzX1lw8XpD
A3: In , instead of a 1st semester final/assessment, I had students create a 5 minute video about one of their passions
Q4: Why do you think empathy plays a key role in the design thinking process?
do u mean for Ss to uncover/discover what piece of this big issue to focus their design work?
remove assumption GW 4 1 User may have different POV 4 another User The need Cld B misunderstanding EDU propaganda
Yes GW means & impacts others in many different ways
A3 With an empathetic frame no room for self doubt emphasize solving problem
A4: Many Ppl are in a "me 1st" mindset. Empathy teaches them to look past their bubble and collaborate. Win/win!
w/o Empathy its NOT design thinking W/O user its NOT DT Call it design, making, creating, doing
A4: Empathy is key. It creates an environment where the problem MATTERS. If Ss own that, then their solution will reflect that.
A4: Because w/out empathy, you're solving your own problem - not theirs. My alarm clock vs. your alarm clock
A4: Empathy plays a key role in DT b/c no solution is a success if it is unused. E is essential to understanding where to start.
Yes - easy to tell u what I want/need. Much deeper thinking needed to help solve someone else's problem. https://t.co/ZBsK53OubH
A4: Because w/out empathy, you're solving your own problem - not theirs. My alarm clock vs. your alarm clock
A4: Empathy is where it all starts... Have to gain an understanding for those that you're creating the solution for!
Preach. https://t.co/D6IHHrA0Hu
w/o Empathy its NOT design thinking W/O user its NOT DT Call it design, making, creating, doing
Yes and... w/o understanding user, not practicing DT. https://t.co/CVFG8U6st6
w/o Empathy its NOT design thinking W/O user its NOT DT Call it design, making, creating, doing
It's like cooking steak for a vegetarian. https://t.co/GDyEM7MfIy
A4: Empathy is where it all starts... Have to gain an understanding for those that you're creating the solution for!
Yes! Though I would argue Empathy more essential to know if you've arrived at a possible solution https://t.co/g4L8I7Gpu5
A4: Empathy plays a key role in DT b/c no solution is a success if it is unused. E is essential to understanding where to start.
A2 Empathy for sure is an aspect that is most relevant in my classroom it open doors to all other learning.
crush that gremlin! Use DT as a pedagogical lens, not as another thing to do
Gr Q it is an active & intentional act of gaining understanding of another w/o judgement Keeping an empathetic posture
A4 Empathy creates connection and understanding and ultimately a community where everyone is valued
Want so desperately for people to realize: standards & DT can go hand in hand when you see DT as pedagogy not project
My phone is gonna die! Thx so much 2 folks 4 jumping in & hosting 2nite! &innovate
W/O empathy one wld belittle d problem & laugh abt culture & social set up.. that blocks..
Yes! Don't just make something you think they want, but listen to them & create something they need!
Yessss. THIS! https://t.co/1WtBREivyP
Want so desperately for people to realize: standards & DT can go hand in hand when you see DT as pedagogy not project
Can u both explain a little more what you mean?
Thx for being here! https://t.co/EgSk0h7dAt
My phone is gonna die! Thx so much 2 folks 4 jumping in & hosting 2nite! &innovate
Im impressed you tweeted the little guy Growing in Confidence Little Grasshopper! Keep it Up!
you can start w playful experimentation or brainstorming, but until you empathize, you haven't solved
Hey Peeps thankU 4 bringing light laughter & experiences 2 tonight I guess there’s No Such thing as Summer Break 4 Ts
Q5: It's all about sharing! What are your favorite resources?
What you have done instead, is product-based learning :) https://t.co/EH6FFye9gY
you can start w playful experimentation or brainstorming, but until you empathize, you haven't solved
So glad this dropped tonight! https://t.co/6WGyUEQDQG
Im impressed you tweeted the little guy Growing in Confidence Little Grasshopper! Keep it Up!
. honestly not sure how you can even id a problem w/o empathy, let alone "solve" it
Thanks for joining our convo! https://t.co/XaGtKeSZNZ
