#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
Hey #kinderchat I am a student teacher from Auckland, New Zealand. Participating in Twitter chats is one of our assignments this semester - hope you don't mind me following along!
First time #kinderchat -ter here! Amanda from Greenfield, WI. My favorite memory of Kindergarten was my teacher's magic quiet glitter jar that she would "sprinkle" over us as we walked into the hallway - it's those little magical memories I guess! ;)
Hello! Krissy from Springfield, VA. Teacher in Alexandria. I remember being in an all day kindergarten program which was at a preschool because half day wasn't an option for my mom. This was in the mid 80s. #Kinderchat
My memory of K is when teacher asked me what to do in fire I said “run out the door as fast as you can” which I thought was perfectly logical. Nope, she said. Stunned. 😳😄#kinderchat
Amy from Independence, MO. I love all my K memories-playing with giant blocks, learning to tie shoes, learning my phone number on a giant phone, & listening to my teacher read #Kinderchat
Amy here, moderating from The Canada. My own KG class was a huge double classroom with a folding wall down the middle. We had fish AND a rabbit! #Kinderchat
Hello! My name is Hannah Mercer and I am a pre-service teacher studying elementary and special education at Grove City College! I was home schooled for kindergarten, so my favorite memories are from day trips to museums or other fun places! #Kinderchat#gccedu
Hi #kinderchat I'm Samantha from Baltimore, MD. I loved being able to lead the class in the morning meeting. I felt like a superstar getting to sit in the teacher's chair! 😀
Does anyone have a great Dr. Seuss activity they like to do with their students? Every year, my students paint a hot air balloon for "Oh, The Places You'll Go" and do a response for where they would fly to. They always turn out so cute. #kinderchat
A1: I am currently in an Ed Technology class right now and they have mentioned many helpful online tools to help be incorporated in classrooms. Some are Poll Everywhere, Boogie Boards, and Google cardboard are three of my favorite technology tools for the classroom! #kinderchat
Liane from Abbotsford BC Canada here. I have to go make dinner soon. Kinder memory was of my teacher. She was the best but her husband passed away mid year and we had a replacement. She was not Mrs. Dyck. Oddly I remember my Gr. 1 teacher better. #kinderchat
Hello #Kinderchat I am a student at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. This is my first twitter chat ever, it’s part of one of my assignments this semester! One of my fav memories from kindergarten would be my teachers snoopy dog house.
A1 In Kinder we are CONSTANTLY moving! We use Kagan and GoNoodle as well as creative transitions to hold their attention while completing tasks.

"Hooks containing the element of movement can be extremely effective." - @burgessdave
Q1: How have you used movement to engage your students?
#TLAP
✨☠️⭐✨☠️⭐✨☠️⭐✨
A1: GoNoodle is my saving grace. I do try to have the students move from the carpet to the tables or dance every 20 min. I feel that it does keep them focused better. #Kinderchat
We read and discuss Horton Hears a Who and make the little flower to go with it and remind us that a person's a person no matter how small #Kinderchat
Do you have a template for the balloon?
I had a full-day of kindergarten, but it was only because my mom made a deal with me that my siblings would go to full-day K. Sure enough, all three went to half-day K. #Kinderchat
Last year we did a word family hat for the Cat in the Hat. It was cute and they enjoyed wearing them. You can provide supports (first letter) or let them write their own words for the -at family. #kinderchat
I have seen a few students who are on this chat going for teaching, as well as me? Does anyone have advice for us as we start our blocks/student teaching? #kinderchat
Please note that #tlap is a separate chat, at the same time as #kinderchat tonight. Please use the correct hashtag for each conversation if you are multi-tasking.
I try to keep my lessons in 20 min segments. 20 min whole group, 20 min literacy centers, 20 whole group. If I go long, it's bc we're engaged and I'm sure to include movement as part of the lesson #Kinderchat
I think that's a fantastic idea to create the flower after the story! That can also be used for Dr. Seuss's birthday coming up! I think my class and I might do Green Eggs and Ham. #kinderchat
My cooperating teacher was more helpful than the field supervisor. Field supervisors come observe you a few times but your cooperating teacher is with you everyday and they can attest to your work better than the supervisor. #Kinderchat
I remember first better too. I remember eating the paste and stealing the hot wheel cars in K. That's about it. I think I was one of those kids.... #kinderchat
I don't have a template as I free drew it one year and now just run it thru the copier on construction paper. However, I've added a picture for a reference! I also take a picture of each kid for them to glue inside their balloon basket. :) #Kinderchat
To add to movement breaks, I also teach my students stretching movements and some yoga poses! It's hard for them to balance but they like the challenge and they are learning something new. 😀 #kinderchat
Our cafeteria makes green eggs and Ham for breakfast this day and we invite the whole school (I'm actually counting the RSVPs now). I will read this and a few others on Friday. #Kinderchat
A3 We practice phonics daily. Anytime I can show the students how to apply their phonics skills in another area of their day, you see the light bulb turn on. Love that AHA moment!
#IHMarchMadness#Kinderchat#TLAP
It felt really... fake? to me, and not well-suited to introverted kids. Just... very rah-rah. Not a good fit for me. Reminded me of "whole brain teaching" which is... not based in any science. #kinderchat
Question about centers- Do you do them during your math time as a blended learning station or do you have a specific time block in your schedule reserved for centers? #kinderchat
When they first came out, my G1s used to sniff before they wrote. They had "rainbow" nose tips by the end of the day! My fave is still the black licorice. #kinderchat

Some sneetches had stars on their bellies and thought they were better. Segregation. Then guy comes w a star-off machine and they get mixed up as to who is “better” #kinderchat Brilliant. Kids get it instantly.

I observed school with this as a focus. Students were so well behaved compared to other schools I had observed. They were intone to emotions; if they were getting overwhelmed they would tell the teacher they needed a break. Once calm, they would rejoin the activities. #Kinderchat

I use these! Kids LOVE them. I actually give them dots on their hands through out the day and they work towards a happy face (if the parents are okay with me drawing on them 🤷🏻♀️) #Kinderchat

Today I tried the "little problem" or a "big problem" approach with my kids to help problem solve independently. Anyone use that on a daily basis and can share? #kinderchat
Once I was caught talking to my friend through two inch gap from the floor to the bottom of this book shelf during nap time and got separated. I was sad. Lolololol. #KinderChat
I use that language all the time with my kinders but I begin with tying it into zones lessons and also having discussions of what big problems are (emergency’s, 911 scenarios) #kinderchat
A1. There are many ways to help get kids up and out of their sits and one way is to play internet games, and invite others class in like cahoot or have a lesson outside. #Kinderchat
Here is a link to an example of science interactive notebook. If you search on my site there are more posts and examples https://t.co/sGgLQlCXxX#kinderchat
I often tell stories about my own “problems” so I can example/explain big/small problems in my own life and think aloud how I solved the problem. #kinderchat
England loves using water beads- they do so many wonderful sensory activities. I worry bc US teachers have gotten so tech heavy and not play/outdoor/sensory focused as much #kinderchat
My students are lucky if they go on the computer once a week for centers. I'm trying to focus on reading, writing and sight words for the next few months. #Kinderchat
#kinderchat trying to think of something new to put in the sensory bin already done rice, pasta, pine cones, soapy water & sponges... tried the gel orbs but kids destroyed them in a day. Thoughts/suggestions?
How long do your scavenger hunts take? If it is just a short break to clear their minds and reenergise them, so to speak? Or does it tie in with something else? #Kinderchat
I got water beads last week and was so excited.. a couple wild boys and a sub covering my classroom while I had a meeting.... they were all smashed into gooey bits when I got back. Didn’t even last an hour #kinderchat
Definitely use real-life scenarios that they can understand to help them see what constitutes as a big problem (fire) and little problem (someone took their pencil). Think aloud is a good demonstration! #kinderchat

My Internet made me want to lose my mind tonight, but after some patience and perseverance, here's a link to our blog post from today! :) https://t.co/1gAoY50NEF#kinderchat cc @john_gris

Sounds like you are doing your best in a crap situation, but your district is WRONG and harming kids. Can kids scoop/pour/measure water beads as a "science" activity? #kinderchat
We just this year got 20mins of recess back into our schedule 🤷🏻♀️ #Kinderchat you got to get creative in lesson planning to work things in when your admin comes through
Going to make a list. My colleagues will love me and welcome me with open arms when next I sub #kinderchat Just in case they’re at a loss and haven’t heard an idea from me lately 😂😂
I’ve found in past kiddos with sensory issues or just those who are really particularly do not like the fake grass cause it static clings to everything!! #kinderchat
All research points to higher learning w more recess. (My ideal: 1 hour out, 1 hour inside) unstructured play for full day K. Builds self regulation. #kinderchat
Embrace the mess lol my colleague has a water table and brings that and the supplies outside her door when she uses them... We have an open campus where our doors open to the outside vs a hallway #Kinderchat
Oh. And on sensory stuff... I didn't like doing activities around that in K. Only thing was the shaving cream on the desk. Other than that... Wanted no part of it! #KinderChat Our didn't also didn't have a sensory area or table
That's a really good point...at my school, they are much more focused on students using iPads and computers.. You're right, the play/outdoor/sensory aspects are oftentimes put on the backburner.I like to get my kids outside as much as I can when the weather is nice. #kinderchat
We use moon sand. It's a tub that one little uses in a mini sensory bin by the meeting place. It helps him listen. It's messy, but it works for us #kinderchat
OMG, when I was in preschool, my FAVOURITE art day was when we got a big squirt of shaving cream on our paper, them sprinkled on powdered tempera and finger painted. SO GREAT. #Kinderchat
