#musedchat Archive

Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. It’s a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.

Hi Kristin, how are you tonight? #musedchat
    In reply to @KZimMMMusic
  • KZimMMMusic Dec 17 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1: musical theatre soundtracks. To me it’s like listening to a musical audiobook. #musedchat
  • AndreaMakarchuk Dec 17 @ 8:14 PM EST
The music I listen to is all over the place ... 80’s pop, wind band music, big band, current pop music, musical theatre. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:14 PM EST
Got a favorite musical? Have to admit that musical theatre is pretty far outside my area of expertise. #musedchat

  • GregClarkMusic Dec 17 @ 8:16 PM EST
A1: Music that is about creativity. In the concert band world we praise precision, which is valuable, but not about individual expression. I need that. Right now it’s @vulfpeck for modern things and Clifford Brown for more trad-ish jazz #MusEdChat
    In reply to @jguarr, @vulfpeck

Gotta check out some Vulfpeck...where would you recommend starting? #musedchat

A1: Lots and lots of progressive rock. Yes, Rush, Devin Townsend Project, and Dream Theater (seeing them for the 9th time in March!) #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:20 PM EST
Been dipping my toes into Snarky Puppy as well. This grooves HARD https://t.co/Bk7bRuY8j9 #musedchat
  • LStaniszewski1 Dec 17 @ 8:25 PM EST
A1: Big mix. I like to listen to some modern artists/keep up with the kids, but have my classics to fall back on too; everything from Motown, Classic Rock, Classical, Pop, EDM, etc. Love Hybrid groups like @yMusicNYC and @PMJofficial that blend genres/crossover too! #MusEdChat
  • jguarr - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:25 PM EST
Q2: What are some of your favorite critical listening questions to ask your students? #musedchat
  • GrubersOrch Dec 17 @ 8:25 PM EST
R1: Simon and Garfunkel, always #musedchat
  • GregClarkMusic Dec 17 @ 8:28 PM EST
#MusEdChat Introducing myself... Hi everyone! I teach 4th and 5th grade band, as well as 6-8 jazz band in upstate NY. Very into music learning theory. Amateur composer. Low brass. Looking forward to a lively and productive discussion!

Always a classic. We did a *gorgeous* arrangement of their Scarborough Fair in our college trombone choir. #musedchat

R2: “What can we do differently to sound like/look like/play like THAT?” #musedchat
  • LStaniszewski1 Dec 17 @ 8:30 PM EST
A2: Its all about how deep they are listening/how much are the my aware of while playing. “How did that sound?” “What did you think of____?” “Did you like what you heard?” Playing “band mad libs” and asking them to complete “That sounded _______” is another go-to. #musedchat
  • LStaniszewski1 Dec 17 @ 8:32 PM EST
A2: Its all about how deep they are listening/getting them to form opinions about their playing. “How did that sound?” “What did you think of____?” “Did you like what you heard?” Playing “band mad libs” & asking them to complete “That sounded _______” is another go-to. #musedchat
  • KZimMMMusic Dec 17 @ 8:35 PM EST
A2: I start each lesson with listening as they come in and have two q’s about the song on the board. Most popular are timbre & tempo; sometimes mood, genre, dynamics. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:35 PM EST
A2: On the first really nice day of spring, I like taking my kids outside for a few minutes, asking for total silence, and then having them write down *everything* they hear. Leads to a discussion on just how much we tune out each day #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:40 PM EST
Trying to remember who I took that activity from...I know we did it during my undergrad years, just can't remember the specifics. #musedchat

Q3: What activities do you do to develop aural skills with your students? #musedchat
  • LStaniszewski1 Dec 17 @ 8:47 PM EST
A3: Love asking sections that aren’t being worked w/to listen and give feedback to those playing/pick a section to listen for other than their own. Mixing parts to create duets/trios is fun too. Also composing/chord progressions to better hear harmonic relationships. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:49 PM EST
A3: I try to incorporate a lot of singing into fundamentals time. Could be singing a single pitch, a chord, or an entire short chorale. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:50 PM EST
We use the Aaron M. Cole 36 Chorales packet...love to do chorale 5, singing fermatas but playing everything else. Ss have to audiate what comes next. #musedchat
  • StevesMusicRoom Dec 17 @ 8:50 PM EST
A3: We do by-ear learning projects where we pick a song, learn it by-ear, and rearrange it for a performance. I also do a lot of solfege with my younger groups along with transcriptions of easy 3 to 5-note melodies! I will be glad to share some material if you like! #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:52 PM EST
It definitely helps but yeah, it's easy to let the singing fall by the wayside, too. #musedchat

  • KZimMMMusic Dec 17 @ 8:57 PM EST
A3: we do a lot of timbre identification... solfege... pitch matching. Probably could do more but feels like there’s never time to cover everything #musedchat
