Welcome to #scitlap, the chat for science enthusiasts and many who love to TEACH LIKE A PIRATE in our labs and classrooms! Please introduce yourself and mention what signs of spring are evident where you live. #tlap
I'm Lori, part of the #scitlap coordinating crew from ATL. However, tonight I'm in Boston, where there seem to be NO signs of spring. HA! At home, everything is covered with pollen! #scitlap
A1. I teach an online astronomy course and using @pascoscientific light sensors and temperature probes, my students investigate seasons based on tilt. It’s about as spring as I get. #scitlap
Hey #scitlap....Tweeting from the gas station, on my way home from dinner in Boston with the amazing @SciTeach7Davis . My favorite spring lesson is Chestnut Ecology.
On the road again, hopefully be home before the end of chat!
It's a blast. They're always amazed by the guy who breeds clovers and got 50 something leaves. Then we talk polydactyl kittens and more. #mutants#scitlap
A2: Break in April, testing in May, Grad in mid June. Where does the time go. Spring is when I begin to synthesize topics. Plants, water, systems, food sources, etc. Probably build another aquaponic system in our fishtank. #scitlap
Q4) How/Why is it beneficial to bring nature to students...and students to nature (regardless of grade/content)? How does this work logistically? #scitlap
A4: There is so much research that demonstrates how good it is for their brain in general let alpine helping to make sense of content in a practical way. You just have to find your resources. For me it's convincing teachers to give up tine to me. #scitlap
Our back fence is on the dry portion of the SF Bay(lands). I don't utilize it enough. I think because it looks so dry. I have to study it and build a walking lesson. Last yr we went to a Marine center on the Bay. I missed it this yr. I need to think more regionally #scitlap

A3 Earth Day is always on our spring brrak, but I always try and promote kids to get involved in their comunity. I always join a group that does a town clean-up.#scitlap
A4 Once while outside a kid said "it smells like air freshener out here"!
I said "Really? Like the fresh air scent one"
I crack myself up, but perfect example of why kids need to go outside more!
#scitlap#TrueStory
I was looking for that. I don't teach seasons anymore, but when I did I liked to show this and tell the kids they will be smarter than Harvard graduates. #scitlap
Q7) Quick brainstorm: How can a day of “seasonal learning” fit in to various science disciplines (earth, life, physical, engineering, math, computer science)? #scitlap
I don't know if it will work, but I am trying to get examples of what the earth looks like beyond our area. If any #scitlap peeps could have your kids share images they have about the earth to this flipgrid I would appreciate it. https://t.co/h36zDx4o6T
Brainstorming here.
Life: do a bioblitze and share out to iNaturalist app,
Physical: go outside and do time motion graphing or calculate average speed (run off extra energy)
Space: make a model to scale of the planets. Extra kids can be the asteroid belt or moons. #scitlap
It wasn’t excellent, but one day we had they kids go out and write their Earth Day pledges with sidewalk chalk on the school’s sidewalk. They had fun doing it and the images were there for quite awhile. #scitlap
Ahhh, last year we started an American chestnut orchard in which we are working to restore the functionally extinct tree to the ecosystem. #scitlaphttps://t.co/oZKUpwRqhP
