I'll be guest moderating for @DougRobertson, who was called away on a highly classified mission that we can't talk about, but if you wake up safe in your beds tomorrow, you know who to thank. #WeirdEd
I'm Rebecca, I teach Englishy things and instigate literacy in the Dominican Republic. I'm the Absorbaloff because people become a part of me... #WeirdEd
Steph, Instructional Tech from IL. I'm a Dalek 'cause you can't stop me. But I'm also really a little goofy and I don't know what to do with my arms. #WeirdEd
Have you ever joined #weirded chat? It's one I stuck with forever because @TheWeirdTeacher is radical like that (or at least that's who came to mind when I read your tweet).

A1: at home! It's going to be my third year in the school, Ss and Ts know who i am and what I do. I'll be welcoming lots of newcomers to my department on the district level #weirded
A1: I am a “damned yankee” I came to SC from Midwest and I stayed. But I have been at my school for so long people think I’m a native. I feel both #WeirdEd
A1: I'm an immigrant. Moving from a math classroom where I slayed forb14 years to a coaching role at another school. Pumped and a bit apprehensive. #WeirdEd
A1: I am so old school at my school, it's ridiculous. Grew up in the neighborhood.
But feeling a bit of an outsider as I want to push the envelope with new pedagogy/tech/classroom design.

A1
Our school gets kids from 22 districts who have EBD issues. Some are rural, others very urban. Some are very privileged. Others not so much
So I'm a melter of groups. Overall I'm an immigrant and am working on code switching as I teach kids to do the same
A2: a very experienced staff... we have little turnover year to year so the culture and norms are pretty well established among kids and adults. #weirded
This is an interesting concept living in the South. I think I'm pretty "out there" in progressive la la land, but as hard as we try to decide what's normal, the culture outside the school has decided and poured concrete around it. #WeirdEd
A2: The staff cliques and grade level groups really decide the borders.
It seems like 'normal' at my site means NOT making waves. And I make waves, thus, not normal. I'll take extraordinary any day.
#WeirdEd
A2: I suppose the borders are drawn top down for the big stuff. But it’s the little barriers that I like to cross. Kids like it when we break the rules about what school is “supposed” to look like. #morefun#weirded

A2
Each class has it own feel. It's kinda odd but the teachers set the tone for thier room. My class is known for writing thank you notes, academics, and music (para and I keep music on all day
Another class does lots of sports
Another class is gangster
A3: I've noticed a lot of Ss new to the school seem to take awhile to really be comfortable as part of the school community - they're included from day 1, but sometimes aren't used to how we do things #weirded
In other words, who has to adjust to a new set of expectiations about "normal" in order to be part of the life of your school? Who on staff? Which students? What families? #WeirdEd
A3: I think our transfer students have to do this. Many of our kids have gone to school together since K. If you're coming in as a 10th, 11th or 12th grader, it can be overwhelming and probably lonely. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd
A3
All our kids. We have them come and go throughout the year. Last year I only had ten at most at one time but I had 19 different kids in my room last year.
Many come from a situation where they has their own para
Many have to learn to work with diverse classmates
A3: Any and all are welcome to cross the border into our community. But It means stepping out of your comfort zone, letting kids lead, doing what you know is good for kids. It's def harder, but our small community is SO supportive. #WeirdEd@kvanfm@Jyoung1219

I might add that many moons ago I taught English in Taiwan for eight years. I know how it is to be in situation where I could only say thank you and ice cream. So I do have empathy for kids starting in a new situation
This past year I was at a school with over 150 teachers on staff, 24 of them new to the school, 15 of those first-year teachers. And they all had six weeks more than I had to learn how things do. (I was a permanent sub arriving around Election Day) #WeirdEd
A3: This is where our metaphor starts to get real. Immigrant kids have to cross a border to join the culture of our school. Many have come to my schools with loads of trauma. We need to support them! #WeirdEd Check out great books on this topic by ME author Anne Sibley O’Brien.
A3 I reckon that would be SpEd kids like our Kid O. The problem with our severely disabled Kid O is that a lot of people don't have patience for her. #weirded
#WeirdEd
We do have many kids who are from the urban core and I've learned more in the past year or so from #ClearTheAir#EduColor@ValeriaBrownEdu than I have in any class or professional development
A3 Everybody, school culture doesn't represent anything outside of school. Not sure that it is any different than any other 'work' place though. #weirded
A flip side to this is that twice this past semester, I had to sub in a Science class that had a co-teacher and I sat around looking pretty because the entire class was taught in Chinese. Unlike Spanish classes, I didn’t know a word,
#WeirdEd
What directions are the borders being crossed in that case? In what ways are they coming into your world? In what ways are you moving into theirs? #WeirdEd
Now’s the time to climb on board. New cast, new show runner. Basically a new series with a legacy. Seems like they’ll be holding off on re-using old villains and plot lines for a while. #WeirdEd#DoctorWho
Q4: What borders (expectations) might need to be redrawn to make students, teachers, and families feel at home, not outsiders, in your school? #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd
That's where the code switching for both them and I come in
This book is cementing some thoughts about making sure we don't make kids miss learning opportunities due to not always following school codes that many be a huge border for them to pass
#WeirdEd Rogue1. Just like any immigrant, new teachers bring with them fresh ideas, ways of doing things, and attitudes. Positive school and community culture allows these new aspects of culture to flourish.
A1 When I accepted the fact that I was a nonconformist, I still struggled but overall I was more at peace with myself. (I hope that makes sense.) . #weirded
We are so happy you stumbled in the night and found #saskedchat. I mean it’s not #weirded but we do consistently have chocolate discussions and talk about snacks.

Took one of my kiddos to a Frank Turner concert this summer.
He learned about queuing up for doors, saving your pit seats, and concert etiquette. He was excited due to daily exposure to my music. Probably not what you meant....

A4: I truly love about our school is that the students are all so inclusive. I would like to see the out-of-district voluntary transfer parents (brown ones) included more in activities outside of school hours. They literally have to cross the freeway. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd every year my principal has new thing she wants us to focus on so I'm not sure what I'm getting myself into either
Besides she'll be coming in weekly to make sure my desk is clean
You know what, I don’t think so. Everyone knew their names, teachers asked for my students to join the class and facilitated playing with their peers. They had friends outside my class. Mayyyyybe if we had more art time, but that was parent volunteers per class anyway. #weirded
People down the street from us express such hostility towards our Kid O and our Kid Q that it's mind blowing. People can be really judgmental. #weirded
Great question. Tight knit community, not very transient, hidden gem of a school, a lot of teachers on staff who grew up in town. There are just no pretenses. Also we're not one of the famous schools in town, and I think that helps.#WeirdEd
