#EdTechAfterDark Archive
"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com

So are you the history teacher?
A1: The Reformation. In the same way humanism took hold, the digital age has reinvigorated everyone's individual voice.
Running late, Sean in St. Augustine, 3rd Grade, either Rushmore or Jackie Brown.
Soare you the history teacher?
Welcome, Sean! Good to see you.
it's like Disney, you can't pick a favorite character! Lol
A1: reminds me of industrial revolution, everything is changing & don't know what future jobs will be! Robot everything?!
My fav. '90s movie was an incredibly directed and scored Pulp Fiction...
I am sure we can find connections to many periods. History does seem to repeat itself.
I only ever taught world history the middle ages and Ren So the Renaissance because so many new things are being discovered
plus the Joker & Robin in the same movie
Always good to see you in our midst Sean!
Trying tchat.io after being referred to it last time!
A1 Ren. 'cuz science and Christians are still clashing
A1: Rate of quick change/innovation, Industrial Revolution perhaps
I agree. The digital age does represent a renaissance of thought and innovation.
searching for Groundhog Day to DVR tomorrow
A1) The dot com boom of the 90's but for EdTech in the classroom.
A1) for me it would be the Wild West at least in terms of the digital world, lots of anarchy with pockets of law and order
A1 Seriously, every era with any kind of expansion. Lotsa growth, lotsa fear.
A1: with the turmoil in society today I'd say 60's. ISIS (Vietnam), racial tensions, popularity of country music...
haven't seen it? (Not that it matters. You can see it over and over.)
A1: Lots of periods marked by great intellectual change! Any time that made info more accessible. Reformation? Space Race?
A1: I wonder though...at times there seems to be less empathy and compassion https://t.co/cdNLX2HwxG
A1: The Reformation. In the same way humanism took hold, the digital age has reinvigorated everyone's individual voice.
I love this answer. Lots of buzz, buy buy buy! Sometimes the bubble can burst without proper planning!
Interesting connection! Certainly a constantly evolving job market in terms of needed skills.
Yeah, they're all analogous in their own way.
A1: Colonial Era-building relationships and putting down roots
All the more reason to share digital space w Ss to model digital citizenship, including empathy.
With a hashtag this long, it's always good to keep it copied so you can just ctrl-p and have
I'm going with Industrial Revolution for $100, Alex!
Or use a Twitter Chat client! :)
Awesome! A student in our midst at ! Although you should be getting rest, I look 4ward 2 ur insight😄 https://t.co/O4KFz9ccPL
Call me Mr. AOL. or better yet Apple's eWorld... Yes I had an account from 94 until 96 then it died.
what's up Con Man!! Welcome
A1) late '40s-early '50s (TV revolution) & the Gutenberg era (first primitive mass communication). https://t.co/qdtTb0hvxg
Fair enough! Tweetdeck makes a lot of sense for moderating, but maybe not following...
Yup. I think this comes from ’s mindset-the wild west, tech as anarchy, can have some negativity.
that's it. Bubble burst last week when we were told we couldn't use iPads for testing. .
A1: If only all the adults and leaders could model it https://t.co/oqN8POsHyP
All the more reason to share digital space w Ss to model digital citizenship, including empathy.
In many ways we are right now 😉 don't lose hope...
A2 It is TREMENDOUSLY easier to communicate and grow with people from anywhere. I have friends all over the world now.
great points worried at some point we will forget how to do stuff build create etc
A2: Obvi tech has changed how we operate- identities are hidden, yet passions run high- easy to be rude and hurtful.
A2: being online means you're a global citizen & can interact w/ anyone anywhere anytime! Cool but a lot of responsibility
A2: We can instantly connect and be sitting and discussing things. We can collaborate on projects. It is amazing.
A2: The world is shrinking. It's much easier to communicate cross-continents now, and we need to be culturally sensitive.
A2: All have more responsibility to consume and produce knowledge
A2- Tech has certainly opened world to anyone w/ click of a button. Skyping w/ a class across the ocean. Connectivity.
A2:You're no longer confined by space and time. You can literally be anywhere at anytime instantly. https://t.co/ORCWZKLQJz
A2) We spoke of global integration, but never did it, now it happens instantly many times without our initiation
A2) Instant connection w/ experts and students around the world leaning can remain continuous and the world is now flat
A2: You can collaborate and learn from anybody around the world! And develop insomnia because of time differences 😜
a2 its like going from the classroom to admin. Your whole perspective opens up & changes how we view everything
A2: As eds we model how to interact with each other responsibly face-to-face- we also need to model digital responsiblity
Agreed, makes so important
A2: Instant communication to billions...but NO DELETE KEY!
A2- Google Maps/Earth to explore an area of world. Never been to London, but get visuals, walk down streets all from PC.
To quote , the smartest person in the room is now..the room. Access to info, but most of all..each other
A2 (cont.): We can learn and grow to work together to make our world better. Positive role models & postitive change!
Tech has given T and Ss the ability to collaborate in ways that would never be possible without it
A2- Individual voice. Everyone can be published independently. Blogging, tweeting, social media in general.
I call that "Keyboard Cowboy[ing]"
Better yet, culturally intelligent 😄 Embrace cultures and let yourself be in awe of differences. https://t.co/6sVy8l1gQY
A2: The world is shrinking. It's much easier to communicate cross-continents now, and we need to be culturally sensitive.
A2: Everything is accessible because of tech- news, information, and answers- but we need to model respectful communication
. I love that! Much better than culturally sensitive. Culturally intelligent.
A2; In fact there is little we CAN"T do.
the emphasis on Producing or innovating instructional practices
Raise generation of leaders understand what means to be global citizen & care 4 each other https://t.co/FPGQvWbDXK
In many ways we are right now 😉 don't lose hope...
Enjoying the conversation tonight, but the yawns have set in. Better get some rest. Have a great week on purpose!
A2 Gobally nothing can be hidden. Anyone can find out anything Instant info makes it hard to know who to believe.
Experts like you! https://t.co/5NOrgFkwDj
A2) Instant connection w/ experts and students around the world leaning can remain continuous and the world is now flat
Glad you could join us Greg!
Love it! Culturally Intelligent! Awe is a great world! https://t.co/KptIw8E4dz
Better yet, culturally intelligent 😄 Embrace cultures and let yourself be in awe of differences. https://t.co/6sVy8l1gQY
A2: The world is shrinking. It's much easier to communicate cross-continents now, and we need to be culturally sensitive.
Hello and thank you Sandra queen. .
We have to help Ss see the humanity behind the screens. It's our generations biggest challenge https://t.co/CadvSFFHNk
on this note: it's easier (unfortunately)to be rude and hurtful when there is no relationship w/ the screens
As such, we can cultivate faster than ever before. We need to leverage this. https://t.co/DENAZhNqxe
Raise generation of leaders understand what means to be global citizen & care 4 each other https://t.co/FPGQvWbDXK
In many ways we are right now 😉 don't lose hope...
A3: Don't give up if it didn't work the way you wanted the first time. Read, understand, and try again.
A2: Power of social media to mobilize people too into action, amazing to show Ss that power https://t.co/xRieDruVrt
A2 Gobally nothing can be hidden. Anyone can find out anything Instant info makes it hard to know who to believe.
A3 Look to your future. Don't say or post anything online your grandma wouldn't like. It might cost you your future job.
We talk a lot about respecting other peoples' online property. Create your own content, or check for license!
A3) Not a digital skill but the ability to Prototype and fail often, and yet learn while it is taking place.
Great point! News fly faster... https://t.co/Js3iwfMJQb
A2 Gobally nothing can be hidden. Anyone can find out anything Instant info makes it hard to know who to believe.
A3 (cont): I find so many kids just skipping the directions in online tools because they're so rushed to get it done.
staff has to know the dig world is real, and that kids need new skills to interact and be safe
A3: I try to help them leverage digital tools to create something concrete. For instance... https://t.co/WDX7szXxx9
A3: Communicating, problem solving, collaborating, design, acceptance, and
A3 teaching them to create not just consume with screencasts & blogging cook not just eat
A3: how to collaborate with one another to create
Too many Ss are tech-literate but info-illiterate; I aim to teach them to leverage tech 2 go 2 the next level.
A3; Tech is not just for entertainment, it has purpose.
create, publish, empower.
A3: it's okay to try & fail & try again. What you put online may last FOREVER so it's important to be thoughtful.
A3: Responsibility to act professionally, what do they want their digital profile to say about them
A3: being mean online is the same as being mean in person---actually worse bc more people see it & it sticks around longer
Great thought! https://t.co/2ttFs6AnMW
A3: Don't give up if it didn't work the way you wanted the first time. Read, understand, and try again.
I ask Ss..”What did you like when u were 7? Still like it? No? Maybe think b4 tattooing it on urself…or tattooing it online
A3: to use tech purposefully, to create, to problem solve, to use responsibly, and to respect others
A3: That actions equal consequences- & that everything online leaves a trail that will follow you for many, many years.
each person has their own Brand or story either we tell it or it gets told without us
And it becomes part of your digital shadow.
A3: Too slow down is important lesson in digital world, wait to hit send, publish, review, revise https://t.co/DVOJ0erIkg
A3 (cont): I find so many kids just skipping the directions in online tools because they're so rushed to get it done.
Headed out early tonight...can't seem to hang with the big boys and girls tonight. : ) enjoy!
A2: Be aware of Stuff beyond your school+ District. Like how ppl date in the dark.
(different blog)
the real audience is a big deal to my 9 year old
How awesome would it be to have a S blog from when we were young?!
Network issues and sleep needs are ruining me! Good night, kids!
Worksheets on iPads r still worksheets!Anyone can consume content. Use tech tools to CREATE content
https://t.co/RSQ5IWTrIk
have a great night thanks for stopping by
A4: shouldn't teach the way you were taught; world has changed! Tech looks different from yr 2 yr & so should your teaching
and I spent the entire weekend preaching that to future educators at !
😐Bc only my mom calls me by my first name? It's only Q4.
A3: the slow disappearance of textbooks & evolving towards a 1:1 environment that allows access to all info not selective
always start with why. Why are you teaching students how to cite in MLA format? “because we always have.”
A4: It's important to keep learning and growing. What works now may have a better solution in the future.
A4: always trying new things & adding new tech. But doesn't mean giving up what's successful bc it's not NEW & SHIIIIIINY!
A4:It looks like a crap ton of unknowns! It looks like Ts givin the keys to Ss more often & letting them drive instruction😄
That is great! I like the way you guys think. ;-)
A4: "Because we've always done it this way" is a dangerous answer to any question.
A4) I think it looks like SAMR , but that needs to include the idea that there is power in creating https://t.co/E0OuAF0knt
Q4: matching the right tool for the audience/purpose, having bank of tools to consume/create knowledge
Ss could be used to thinking intuitively after playing so many🎮games.
it's crazy the device you're using is the oldest device you will ever use (most likely)
Great point about the relationship of the digital citizen & tech from https://t.co/BGe0vLabOQ
We have to help Ss see the humanity behind the screens. It's our generations biggest challenge https://t.co/CadvSFFHNk
on this note: it's easier (unfortunately)to be rude and hurtful when there is no relationship w/ the screens
Very true; games often have a tip/clue if you take the wrong path. Learning tools don’t always have that.
A4 It's a place where kids are talking creating & sharing content with each other
Screen time doesn’t have to be wasteful, superfluous time. Tech connects us and unites us. Not just $500 Netflix machines
A4: Practicing Good Digital Citizenship! Do you have a reference for image? I'd like to use it. https://t.co/97dRcIYQxI
A4) I think it looks like SAMR , but that needs to include the idea that there is power in creating https://t.co/E0OuAF0knt
a4 a room where the teachers feet hurt more than their throat at the end of the day
A4) Technology in the classroom is as pervasive as a pen and paper.
DigitalEvolution is how Ts collaborate w/Ss to incorporate EdTech. As Ts + Ss use Tech ➡️ different uses+value.
A4: Ss are continually full of new amazing ideas-tech is always evolving; marrying the two through evolving as a T
A4: that empower students to follow their passions and innovate
Have to go, thanks for the great chat tweeple
::ahem:: Q5 coming up in 40 seconds!
Through story. Through example. When we come to it, it is a very human thing to be connected 😄 https://t.co/amCSL6yG2k
But how do we teach students to empathize with the people they hurt with their words online?
Yes; let Ss come to you or ask them what tech they are currently invested in. Go to them https://t.co/YRv10d6X6e
A4: shouldn't teach the way you were taught; world has changed! Tech looks different from yr 2 yr & so should your teaching
A4- where students are taking ownership to work collaboratively, creatively, and focusing on process instead of prod.
thanks Greg! See you next time
authenticity is key. Tell the victim’s story. Ask the Ss theirs. Every1 is fighting a battle. .
A4) Ideally, it would mean all kids having access to mobile devices, without arbitrary restriction. https://t.co/ccSk3ORJBI
It would require a different pedagogical approach. Esp when Ss are already used to using Tech a certain way.
Teach Model Practice is the same, but we have to share digital space with our Ss to do so
A5: Create, create, create/Problem solving/Design thinking/Not being satisfied w/ "how it is" but think "how it could be"
A5: To use the tools beyond gimmick & entertainment or distraction. Use it for learning & changing the world for the better
Q5: Not everything is immediate or right now, some things take time and hard work
A5: CREATION of CONTENT using an ever-evolving range of tech tools.
A5: When you think you done, you have just really begin. https://t.co/kEpSSKa2ZV
A5: Create, create, create/Problem solving/Design thinking/Not being satisfied w/ "how it is" but think "how it could be"
A5: Giving credit where credit is due. ’ concept of Ss being problem FINDERS instead of just prob. solvers
to quote my 11th grade computer repair T: “You’re never done.”
A5 the value of work/collaboration without technology. Somethings are better face to face instead of screen to screen
A5) Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking these skills are essential for digital evolution
EdTech: Beyond The Gimmick. What a book title! dibs.
Patience and persistence are key. Dare I say… grit? resilience? https://t.co/Odz8iWypDc
Q5: Not everything is immediate or right now, some things take time and hard work
A5: shouldn't teach basic facts anymore bc tech can remember faster & better! Teach thinking, collaboration, life skills
bells and whistles aren't enough, there has to be learning. So important!
A5: with digital natives come restless techies in the classroom at times. Guiding the "on-demand" to "on-to-discovery" and
agreed, and Ondemand generation struggles with that, maker Ed and genius hour so important
Dare to say growth mindset! Perseverance! https://t.co/ylm8LLPuJE
Patience and persistence are key. Dare I say… grit? resilience? https://t.co/Odz8iWypDc
Q5: Not everything is immediate or right now, some things take time and hard work
Agreed. Tech can level the playing field for gaps in Edu due to SocioEconomic diff.
We gotta teach Ss to become digital citizens—not digital tourists
Final Q coming up in 1 min!
This year I've seen a real mess in an extracurricular because of this. Nasty!
Citizenship of any community demands responsibility https://t.co/qUruv7ATG3
We gotta teach Ss to become digital citizens—not digital tourists
Sounds like an RFK quote?
Participants and CONTRIBUTORS vs purely consumers and spectators https://t.co/WZUPm6rivE
We gotta teach Ss to become digital citizens—not digital tourists
Um, if I stole someone’s words, I don’t know! RFK- Robert F Kennedy?
Q6: Screencasting, create, share knowledge, make thinking visible
So crucial. It’s a viable space we live in now—not a simulation.
A6: WARNING!!! HIPPY-DIPPY ABSTRACT ANSWER POSTING SHORTLY...
A6) iPad, and these three got me started, from there it was all about what Ss could create
A6: my website! https://t.co/4wZmBnhYTl can throw anything up in secs I want to share w/kids, even on the fly during class
A6: I am going to have to go back to Google Apps. That was the catalyst in starting my personal edtech renaissance.
A6:My biggest "app" reformation came in the form of my own shifting mindset. The tools are secondary when starting w "Why?"
A6: to connect Ss to TONS of expert content, for green screening, and iMovie.
"For of those to whom much is given, much is required" JFK https://t.co/q6frhIUQez
Um, if I stole someone’s words, I don’t know! RFK- Robert F Kennedy?
A6 no one tool or app can transform teaching, the teacher must change to meet the needs of stdnts living in a digital world.
A6:
I truly love Looking at trying out
A6: 3rd graders love iPads, and feeling like they are part of something bigger-
Video is powerful. Ss create their own brand of answers. Emotional connection with content.
A5) Our generations who didn't grow up w these things will no longer control the narrative. https://t.co/4F9512D73F
Truth! The game changer will NEVER be tech. Tech in the right hands…that will. https://t.co/pwHSOnfp7t
A6 no one tool or app can transform teaching, the teacher must change to meet the needs of stdnts living in a digital world.
A6 (con): It began here: If I can use to share/edit/change, how much easier will teaching be!? CC:
A6: Video is cool- I also use stop motion animation to allow Ss to create animations to show understandings.
A6: Google Apps for Ed makes collaborating even easier https://t.co/KuafuFZAjA
A6:
I truly love Looking at trying out
lol I'm🤕ill. I've been trying to😴Not working. So I'm on w/ excuse.
Thanks to the awesome and for moderating with me tonight.
Happy and I could co-moderate your proverbial pillow fight https://t.co/AEKOelqAU8
Thanks to the awesome and for moderating with me tonight.
