A1: Even though I speak decent Spanish, langauge can be a difficult barrier, Then we add in English and ASL. I wish I had could better facilitate parents connecting to other parents especially my DWD kiddos #DEAFED
  • mhairiforrest Apr 12 @ 7:42 PM EDT
#DeafEd A1: The challenge I have encountered is in encouraging my Latinx families to learn ASL. They usually have two concerns: they are very busy with work and they're already struggling w English.
  • LaurenMaucere Apr 12 @ 7:42 PM EDT
I echo the same. I wish there were classes locally to learn Spanish through ASL and English #DeafEd

  • wendy_palatino Apr 12 @ 7:43 PM EDT
A1: I think one of the more difficult things is not fully understanding the nuances of the oppression our students of color deal with. People with privilege (like myself) too frequently simplify a complex identity. #deafed #ddbddhhld #sped567d
  • councildemanos Apr 12 @ 7:43 PM EDT
This is very common reality for too many DDBDDHHLD Latinx students. We definitely can do more and do BETTER! #DeafEd #C5KnowYourStory #ManosEd

A1: I am a white non binary LGBT person. I think it is important that I say that first before my response. There is always a variety of families in every culture. From my outside perspective, I think Latinx families have been the most supportive of their DDBDDHHLD relatives.
  • pepping_laura Apr 12 @ 7:44 PM EDT
A1: At present my teaching experiences in the educational setting are limited. That being said, misunderstandings due to language barriers and or cultural differences are a challenge in educational settings and beyond. #deafed
  • CAponteSalcedo Apr 12 @ 7:44 PM EDT
A1: Language barriers is one of the challenges. Spanish-speaking families may not feel comfortable working with staff, who are either using English or ASL. Availabilities is another one - often families work multiple jobs. #deafed #C5KnowYourStory #ManosEd
  • AliF_Gem Apr 12 @ 7:44 PM EDT
A1: fortunately, we have a great ASL teacher in my area who supports our parents learn ASL like a bilingual education type! We teacher connect our parents with her. I’ve had parents tell me this helps them develop their English as well. Find a way to communicate! #DeafEd

#DeafEd A2: My district is new to learning about the needs of our #DDBDDHHLD students, so when I am providing information about the needs of my students, I also bring information about the needs of their Latinx families. I'd rather a parent was responsible for this information.

A2: Solo-mainstream experience here. I came from a poor school district with a lot of Teachers for America, who usually are white and inexperienced. For me as the solo deaf student in the classroom, I never really had opportunities for identity development. #deafed #manosed
  • NationalDeafCtr Apr 12 @ 7:48 PM EDT
A2 We try to recognize within-group differences in our data analyses bc not all deaf students have similar experiences & outcomes. For ex, only 67% of Latinx students complete HS in the US- an important consideration for professionals who work with Latinx deaf students. #deafed
  • AliF_Gem Apr 12 @ 7:48 PM EDT
A2: visiting with the families outside of the school setting is actually a really successful way to connect. At school, they see us as the experts but in their element - they are! Empowering the parents earns respect and support! #DeafEd
  • wendy_palatino Apr 12 @ 7:48 PM EDT
A2: I think one of the more encouraging things I witnessed was when I met hearing non-signers attend the @councildemanos conference last year! It was so encouraging to see people outside of the community reach in and try to understand. #deafed #ddbddhhld #Sped567
  • gelofernandezjr Apr 12 @ 7:48 PM EDT

A3: if u r not versed in the lang. a/o culture how can u "foster" it? Instead grab as much opp. as possible to learn about others. Ask questions, meet various people and introduce your Ss to various people and ideas. Nothing worse than continued spread of misinformation #DeafEd

A4 I think that as stakeholders, we should encourage parents of DDBDDHHLD Latinx students to attend conferences and events as well as attend them ourselves. I went to Council De Manos and met parents who recognized me and it showed them my support. @ManosdelCorazon #deafed

This is the unfortunate truth. When will those who have not lived in the communities their students come from understand that they cannot lead without us. Reminds me of @NAD1880 's motto: Nothing about us without us! #DeafEd

Q1: not enough access and understanding or represention in #deafed of Latinx communities with DDBDDHHLD children. Systemic racism, audism and biases in #deafed remain same since inception of education

A6 There are honestly not a lot of resources in our classroom. We have to be creative and invest time in bringing materials from the library and/or home to create meaningful experiences for our DDBDDHHLD Latinx students #deafed
