    In reply to @wendymairclark

A1- Ss, Ts, As, and Ps are learning. It takes a village, and all stakeholders have to be involved and engaged in the learning process. From curriculum to community partnerships. #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:08 PM EST
R1: I would say that both Ss and Ts are learning in my room. I have been learning from my Ss this week as they learned how to use a new tech tool. #IDedchat
  • BDicksonNV Feb 28 @ 10:08 PM EST
A1 all of us! we learn along with students as part of a community & we learn from our students & families #IDedchat

A1- In my classroom, my Ss and I learn from one another all the time. Reinforces the importance of relationship building from day 1. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Feb 28 @ 10:09 PM EST

  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:10 PM EST
    Absolutely! #IDedchat
    In reply to @jazzmeister2013
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:10 PM EST
R1: any time I see something that is great from my Ss or something that I didn’t know, I try to share out and tag on Twitter for various #PLNs. I also have shared videos for my Ss on @YouTube #IDedchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Feb 28 @ 10:10 PM EST
I love encouraging Ts that are tech-weary to invite their Ss to take the lead as they often know a lot about the technology in use. #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @averyteach
  • hiccupc Feb 28 @ 10:10 PM EST
A1: I see a lot of teachers learning...learning how to cope. Too much going on, too many changes, and expected to keep up with all the latest and greatest. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:11 PM EST
YES! I have the philosophy that being a "tech savvy" teacher is more than knowing it all - it being flexible to know who to learn from - especially students! #IDedchat

Who is doing the talking? Am important question for all educators #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Feb 28 @ 10:12 PM EST
The Ss are often the ones that know how to troubleshoot the problems that arise when using new technology in the classroom. #idedchat
    In reply to @averyteach, @jazzmeister2013
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:12 PM EST
R1: I shared with our school eLearning Coordinator about @Flipgrid, who shared with a foreign language T, who shared with her Ss. It’s a network of learners. #IDedchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Feb 28 @ 10:13 PM EST
Absolutely right! I consider myself tech savvy, but I have had many experiences where my Ss have taught me new things. Fun! #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach, @WinkelerD
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:13 PM EST
Q2: Who "owns" the learning in your classroom? Check out this video from Alan November: https://t.co/ipyUvnreL4 #IDedchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Feb 28 @ 10:13 PM EST
    Yes indeed, Dan! #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @averyteach
  • hiccupc Feb 28 @ 10:14 PM EST
Depends on how they're talking though. I learned plenty from pros out there by listening. But it required them to be engaging and me finding importance in what they shared. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach, @alicekeeler, @DavidGeurin
  • tracyscottkelly Feb 28 @ 10:14 PM EST
    A1) Everyone should be learning. T to S. S to T. Principal to T and Ss. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:14 PM EST
A2: I know that I want students to own their learning - to do that they need to be cognitively involved - having a voice in how they demonstrate learning. #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:14 PM EST
This happened with me two days ago where a S taught me a trick with @WeVideo. Use two videos together to blend animations and text together. Really slick trick. #IDedchat
    In reply to @jazzmeister2013, @averyteach, @WinkelerD, @WeVideo
  • WinkelerD Feb 28 @ 10:15 PM EST
A2: Again I would say it is joint. Ss own their own learning, and I mine. #idedchat
  • BDicksonNV Feb 28 @ 10:15 PM EST
A2 it should be kids-we work to get #PBL that students care about & speak to their interests-but also balance standards-why you need to make it relevant! this can be hard but we need to start by asking kids #IDedchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Feb 28 @ 10:15 PM EST
They love to help, and you are building Ss leaders in the process. Inspiring #FutureLeaders daily! #IDedchat
    In reply to @tanamschroeder3, @WinkelerD, @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:15 PM EST
YES! To build a culture of learning in a school - we need lead learners - model learning - including the messy parts! :-) #IDedchat
    In reply to @tracyscottkelly
  • tanamschroeder3 Feb 28 @ 10:16 PM EST
A2: ideally the Ss own their learning. I often ask myself if I’m giving opportunities for them to own their learning. Am I empowering their learning? #idedchat
  • wendymairclark Feb 28 @ 10:16 PM EST
A2: The constructivist in me knows we each own our own learning. The determinedist in me thinks she can just push through things...sigh...the ugly truth. #IDedchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Feb 28 @ 10:16 PM EST
    Very cool! #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio, @averyteach, @WinkelerD, @WeVideo
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:17 PM EST
Those are great questions to reflect on! #IDedchat Tell us a little more what you "look for" in your students to reflect...
    In reply to @tanamschroeder3
  • tracyscottkelly Feb 28 @ 10:17 PM EST
A2) All stakeholders own the leaning. We all have a story to share. Own it! #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:18 PM EST
    Yes! #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • BDicksonNV Feb 28 @ 10:18 PM EST
key is students having a voice-learning should not be something we do to kids but something we do WITH them #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach

    BOOM! #IDedchat
    • BDicksonNV Feb 28 @ 10:18 PM EST

      In reply to @averyteach
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:18 PM EST
R2: every stakeholder should be responsible for their learning AND hold others accountable as well. #IDedchat
  • BDicksonNV Feb 28 @ 10:18 PM EST
sorry gotta roll out early-dinner time! be awesome my #idedchat friends
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:19 PM EST
Thanks for stopping by Ben! I am going to try and make your "olympic" chat tomorrow! #IDedchat
    In reply to @BDicksonNV
  • hiccupc Feb 28 @ 10:19 PM EST
Absolutely agreed. Key to keep in mind is that Ts are the professionals. Objectives and steps to learning need to be rote so we know when those learning opportunities arise. #IDedchat
    In reply to @BDicksonNV, @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:20 PM EST
Q3: Going to shift a little. How do you make sure students have a voice in their learning? #IDedchat
  • wendymairclark Feb 28 @ 10:20 PM EST
Yes...voice and choice! And learning alongside. ##IDedchat
    • BDicksonNV Feb 28 @ 10:18 PM EST
key is students having a voice-learning should not be something we do to kids but something we do WITH them #IDedchat
      In reply to @averyteach
  • wendymairclark Feb 28 @ 10:21 PM EST
A4: Offer choice within the curriculum. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:22 PM EST
    A3: So....this is a #sketchnote I made in response to a couple sessions at #IPDX18 - one of them led by @hmarrs24 #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:22 PM EST
R3: my biology class today was talking about how some classes expect them to know facts that they regurgitate. One S said to me, I want to know how to grow food. I want to know how to do taxes. I want to know how to keep a checkbook. Time to make some happen. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:23 PM EST
Great observations! What scaffolds do you give to students that may sit back and not engage in the struggle? #IDedchat
    In reply to @tanamschroeder3
  • Dale_Chu Feb 28 @ 10:23 PM EST
A3: One way is to have students involved in setting their own schedule. #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:23 PM EST
R3: another S said they would rather do a project of some sort instead of taking a test. I can help make that happen. It’s their leaning style that I should focus on and how they present the information for fluency. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:23 PM EST
I love that they tell you what they "want" to learn - and that you listen and try to make it happen! #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:24 PM EST
This is an intriguing idea - what might that look like Dale? #IDedchat
    In reply to @Dale_Chu
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:25 PM EST
It’s creating a “safe” place where Ss feel comfortable and transparent. This helps lead to better rapport and buy in to my education environment. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:25 PM EST
A3: In my sessions, we explored ways to structure student talk to get all involved in sharing their thinking - to involve even those who are reluctant at first. #IDedchat
  • Dale_Chu Feb 28 @ 10:25 PM EST
    Here's one example: https://t.co/WME7sWXRog #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • hiccupc Feb 28 @ 10:26 PM EST
Love that. Major changes at the school level, but no bells and Ss realizing their own needs and learning opportunities. #IDedchat
    In reply to @Dale_Chu
  • tracyscottkelly Feb 28 @ 10:27 PM EST
A3) I try and relate the instruction to them and their likes. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:27 PM EST
WOW! Love this. It fits right in with mastery education pilots that are currently happening around Idaho.. #IDedchat
    In reply to @Dale_Chu
  • wendymairclark Feb 28 @ 10:27 PM EST
Low threshold high ceiling tasks really help engage all students and invite dialogue. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • WinkelerD Feb 28 @ 10:27 PM EST
A3: Often time I ask them how they want to approach the learning. They are often asked what topics they would like to cover. Real world examples help as well. #idedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:28 PM EST
This is about 15 minutes from where I live. The concept has taken a while to get started. The mission for this school has great potential #IDedchat
    In reply to @Dale_Chu, @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:28 PM EST
Q4: How can you leverage technology to amplify student voice in your classroom? #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:28 PM EST
    Love this Dan! #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • hiccupc Feb 28 @ 10:30 PM EST
Hundreds of apps and sites, but I love that tech can bring out the quiet Ss that don't normally have a mountaintop experience. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • wendymairclark Feb 28 @ 10:30 PM EST
A4: Technology is all students have equal access offers so many options. I guess I would leverage it by letting students run with it. Theater really are the natives! #IDedchat
  • tracyscottkelly Feb 28 @ 10:30 PM EST
A4) Use the technology to allow them to investiage their interests and then tie it back to the lesson or topic. #idedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:30 PM EST
R4: Ss have mutliple ways of presenting knowledge they learn. I use @Flipgrid for demonstration verbally, @google stuff for others, @CanvasLMS for formative and summative assessments. @WeVideo, @voicethread, hope to use @explainevrythng more next year. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:31 PM EST
A4: I think many of you have heard of @Flipgrid at #IPDX18, @hmarrs24 shared how she broadened the audience for her 3rd graders..... #IDedchat
  • Dale_Chu Feb 28 @ 10:31 PM EST
Agreed. Bridging the link between secondary and tertiary schooling, especially for the most neediest students, is a nut that’s been hard to crack. I’m optimistic they can offer some solutions. #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio, @averyteach
  • HCraigPritchard Feb 28 @ 10:31 PM EST
Q4: tech can help provide multiple access points for students, support different learning styles, but should be a support, not the focus. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:32 PM EST
A4: She had her students create video book recommendations...and then invited other 3rd grade classes to add to their grid with their own @Flipgrid book recommendations! #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:32 PM EST
R4: remember that it’s not the tool for learning, but the skills exhibited that show #NowReady and #FutureReady skills. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Feb 28 @ 10:32 PM EST
A4: Technology is how students communicate currently with each other...why not use it? #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:32 PM EST
YES! What is the learning target first....what will you assess...I would assess the process over the product! #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • WinkelerD Feb 28 @ 10:33 PM EST
A4: For my students it gives a voice to the shy. It gives students the ability to articulate if they have nerves speaking in front of crowds. #idedchat
  • Dale_Chu Feb 28 @ 10:34 PM EST
    Well said https://t.co/2oJDo9oErx #IDedchat
    In reply to @HCraigPritchard
  • HowardKiyuna Feb 28 @ 10:35 PM EST
A4: I do full inclusion. For my former Ss who are nonverbal AAC is the obvious example of voice & not just communication but their participation in community. For others slide shows display their knowledge. This helps their typical peers to connect with them. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:35 PM EST
Correct - you shouldn't use tech for the purpose of tech - it should amplify the learning goals for the lesson - not overshadow. #IDedchat
    In reply to @HCraigPritchard
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:36 PM EST
That being said - tech can allow you to enhance learning in different ways. #IDedchat
    In reply to @HCraigPritchard
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:36 PM EST
    R4: think about how powerful #PBL can be with #BlendedLearning, #5Cs, #TechTools, and #StudentVoice. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:38 PM EST
Q5: Here is another #sketchnote from #APDX18 inspired by @jutecht When we think about learning goals - how can we encourage students CREATE content to demonstrate learning? #IDedchat
  • hiccupc Feb 28 @ 10:38 PM EST
And how can we also introduce more #InterestBasedLearning. #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • wendymairclark Feb 28 @ 10:39 PM EST
My frustration with blended learning right now is the blended programs that are little more than a book in a LMS and a teacher as tutor. This model has got to go! #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • WinkelerD Feb 28 @ 10:39 PM EST
A5: My business management students are creating all the time. From products to sell and market, to spreadsheets and google slides. #idedchat
  • tracyscottkelly Feb 28 @ 10:40 PM EST
A5) Mastery is the goal of learning. We should be open and willung to allow Ss to prove or show mastery in the way that works for them. #idedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:41 PM EST
Definitely. We need to get out of the isolation of departments and focusing entirely on our individual content and look at co-teaching opportunities across content areas focusing on those Ss desires for learning. #IDedchat
    In reply to @hiccupc
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:41 PM EST
A5: So... instead of writing a persuasive essay for an audience of one (the teachers) or maybe 3 - (two peer editors) What if we had students create blog posts that broadened the audience for specific feedback? #IDedchat
  • HCraigPritchard Feb 28 @ 10:41 PM EST
A5: I think this is an area where technology can be very useful in allowing/helping Ss to create. Do more than just "worksheets" #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:41 PM EST
    AMEN! #IDedchat
    In reply to @tracyscottkelly
  • hiccupc Feb 28 @ 10:42 PM EST
Absolutely agreed! I've been trying to rebrand as personalized learning being the focus more than just blended. I'm not going to call it Pencil Learning because you wrote with a yellow #2. #IDedchat
    In reply to @wendymairclark, @LCHS_Bio
  • wendymairclark Feb 28 @ 10:43 PM EST
A5: Goes back to choice and recognizing that students learn as they produce/create. We have to ask them to do more than fill in digital worksheets! #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:43 PM EST
Some blended learning is nothing more than a book from the dreaded textbook companies online. It takes time to create true #BlendedLearning opportunities that are meaningful, Ss driven, and provide opportunities for authentic learning. #IDedchat
    In reply to @wendymairclark
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:43 PM EST
    Allowed - yes - as a choice.... :-) #IDedchat
    In reply to @tracyscottkelly
  • tanamschroeder3 Feb 28 @ 10:43 PM EST
3rd grade just created a google presentation on the challenges Olympians face. Every Ss found interest and owned their learning. Perfect inclusion for my EL Ss. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:43 PM EST
YES! And we need to be sure we aren't just having students do worksheets electronically - it needs to be their learning they are demonstrating while creating. #IDedchat
    In reply to @HCraigPritchard
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:45 PM EST
Create a movie that is based on the same kind of concept of Romeo and Juliet/West Side Story. They can do drawings, take pictures, narrate, and upload to the world. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:46 PM EST
Q6: Sticky question.... Does the learning happen with the finished product...or in the process of creating? Which you do assess? Why? :-) #IDedchat
  • wendymairclark Feb 28 @ 10:46 PM EST

Exactly. Should and needs to be revisited to meet the needs of our Ss each year, but it isn’t reinventing the wheel. Tweeks to meet their needs and desires for learning. #IDedchat

A6) Whybis this sticky? Learning should happen before, during, and after. For me, grading would be during and after. If I where grading this as a stand alone unit. #idedchat

A6: I assess the process? The 'how' is in the 'why' for me. Why? Unless they are mindlessly sitting doing something they are learning. How do you not value the effort of someone who found out how not to do something? #IDedchat

A7: learning happens prior, during, and after production. If you are asking how do we assign a grade...well you have to change mindsets about grades. Simple answer you track mastery not points. #IDedchat

A6: such a good Q. I found myself grading the process more than the finished product, the presentation. Several Ss were doing more than I anticipated they could do. The finished product wasn’t perfect but the process was awesome to observe❤️ #idedchat

Any time I bring up grading...I call it "sticky" :-) #IDedchat

R6: Here’s the $.10 ? At what point is something perfect? My Ss know that things might meet all criteria, but nothing is perfect. If nothing is perfect, then there is room to continue to improve and learn. It’s the mindset and culture established in the classroom. #IDedchat

R6: I also think that learning takes pace day 1-180. When the child leaves at the end of the semester or year, that’s when things are locked in. Let Ss fix things in their learning until that time comes. Why lock in grades until that point. @Dave_Nagel1 #IDedchat

Q7: OK - our night is drawing to a close.... What is something you would just like to share with our #IDedchat PLN tonight?
  • wendymairclark Feb 28 @ 10:57 PM EST
    A7: fun question. I am a podcast junkie! #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 28 @ 10:58 PM EST
R7: I am so glad I have found a group of educators that have similar thoughts on how education needs to change to meet our Ss needs. Thank you so much for a great discussion tonight. Thanks @averyteach for the great questions and discussion forum. Have a great week #IDedchat

A7: https://t.co/IFuIVTs3L3 is something new to me... Think game maker/block coding/mario brothers. Ss learning it now. We create academic models, stories, and assess next. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Feb 28 @ 10:58 PM EST
A7: Thinking that continues to be confirmed with me: We must have a mindset that all of our students can be successful. #IDedchat
