Always good to see my Twitter friends @WinkelerD and others. It’s also great to see some new people here as well. Looking forward to learning from all of you tonight! #IDedchat
Hey #IDedchat leaders! Greg- K, MD. Checking in for a few minutes tonight. Seeing some familiar PLN faces. Hope all are well. Not sure if this is my first time on this chat, but ready to grow and share!
A1: I say students and I are learning at the same time. They learn the curriculum and real world examples and they teach me unique things along the way as well. #idedchat
A1- Ss, Ts, As, and Ps are learning. It takes a village, and all stakeholders have to be involved and engaged in the learning process. From curriculum to community partnerships. #IDedchat
R1: I would say that both Ss and Ts are learning in my room. I have been learning from my Ss this week as they learned how to use a new tech tool. #IDedchat
A1: I’m learning everyday, no question. I’m hoping the Ss are learning too 😊 Ts should always be learning. When I feel like I’m done learning i know it’s time to retire. #idedchat
R1: any time I see something that is great from my Ss or something that I didn’t know, I try to share out and tag on Twitter for various #PLNs. I also have shared videos for my Ss on @YouTube#IDedchat
A1: I see a lot of teachers learning...learning how to cope. Too much going on, too many changes, and expected to keep up with all the latest and greatest. #IDedchat
YES! I have the philosophy that being a "tech savvy" teacher is more than knowing it all - it being flexible to know who to learn from - especially students! #IDedchat
R1: I shared with our school eLearning Coordinator about @Flipgrid, who shared with a foreign language T, who shared with her Ss. It’s a network of learners. #IDedchat
Depends on how they're talking though. I learned plenty from pros out there by listening. But it required them to be engaging and me finding importance in what they shared. #IDedchat

A2: I know that I want students to own their learning - to do that they need to be cognitively involved - having a voice in how they demonstrate learning. #IDedchat
This happened with me two days ago where a S taught me a trick with @WeVideo. Use two videos together to blend animations and text together. Really slick trick. #IDedchat

A2 it should be kids-we work to get #PBL that students care about & speak to their interests-but also balance standards-why you need to make it relevant! this can be hard but we need to start by asking kids #IDedchat
A2: ideally the Ss own their learning. I often ask myself if I’m giving opportunities for them to own their learning. Am I empowering their learning? #idedchat
A2: The constructivist in me knows we each own our own learning. The determinedist in me thinks she can just push through things...sigh...the ugly truth. #IDedchat
Absolutely agreed. Key to keep in mind is that Ts are the professionals. Objectives and steps to learning need to be rote so we know when those learning opportunities arise. #IDedchat
R3: my biology class today was talking about how some classes expect them to know facts that they regurgitate. One S said to me, I want to know how to grow food. I want to know how to do taxes. I want to know how to keep a checkbook. Time to make some happen. #IDedchat
R3: another S said they would rather do a project of some sort instead of taking a test. I can help make that happen. It’s their leaning style that I should focus on and how they present the information for fluency. #IDedchat
It’s creating a “safe” place where Ss feel comfortable and transparent. This helps lead to better rapport and buy in to my education environment. #IDedchat
A3: In my sessions, we explored ways to structure student talk to get all involved in sharing their thinking - to involve even those who are reluctant at first. #IDedchat
A3: Often time I ask them how they want to approach the learning. They are often asked what topics they would like to cover. Real world examples help as well. #idedchat
A4: Technology is all students have equal access offers so many options. I guess I would leverage it by letting students run with it. Theater really are the natives! #IDedchat
Agreed. Bridging the link between secondary and tertiary schooling, especially for the most neediest students, is a nut that’s been hard to crack. I’m optimistic they can offer some solutions. #IDedchat
A4: She had her students create video book recommendations...and then invited other 3rd grade classes to add to their grid with their own @Flipgrid book recommendations! #IDedchat
A4: For my students it gives a voice to the shy. It gives students the ability to articulate if they have nerves speaking in front of crowds. #idedchat
A4: I do full inclusion. For my former Ss who are nonverbal AAC is the obvious example of voice & not just communication but their participation in community. For others slide shows display their knowledge. This helps their typical peers to connect with them. #idedchat
Q5: Here is another #sketchnote from #APDX18 inspired by @jutecht When we think about learning goals - how can we encourage students CREATE content to demonstrate learning? #IDedchat
My frustration with blended learning right now is the blended programs that are little more than a book in a LMS and a teacher as tutor. This model has got to go! #IDedchat
Definitely. We need to get out of the isolation of departments and focusing entirely on our individual content and look at co-teaching opportunities across content areas focusing on those Ss desires for learning. #IDedchat
A5: So... instead of writing a persuasive essay for an audience of one (the teachers) or maybe 3 - (two peer editors) What if we had students create blog posts that broadened the audience for specific feedback? #IDedchat
Absolutely agreed! I've been trying to rebrand as personalized learning being the focus more than just blended. I'm not going to call it Pencil Learning because you wrote with a yellow #2. #IDedchat
A5: Goes back to choice and recognizing that students learn as they produce/create. We have to ask them to do more than fill in digital worksheets! #IDedchat
Some blended learning is nothing more than a book from the dreaded textbook companies online. It takes time to create true #BlendedLearning opportunities that are meaningful, Ss driven, and provide opportunities for authentic learning. #IDedchat
3rd grade just created a google presentation on the challenges Olympians face. Every Ss found interest and owned their learning. Perfect inclusion for my EL Ss. #idedchat
YES! And we need to be sure we aren't just having students do worksheets electronically - it needs to be their learning they are demonstrating while creating. #IDedchat
Create a movie that is based on the same kind of concept of Romeo and Juliet/West Side Story. They can do drawings, take pictures, narrate, and upload to the world. #IDedchat
Exactly. Should and needs to be revisited to meet the needs of our Ss each year, but it isn’t reinventing the wheel. Tweeks to meet their needs and desires for learning. #IDedchat
A6) Whybis this sticky? Learning should happen before, during, and after. For me, grading would be during and after. If I where grading this as a stand alone unit. #idedchat
A6: I assess the process? The 'how' is in the 'why' for me. Why? Unless they are mindlessly sitting doing something they are learning. How do you not value the effort of someone who found out how not to do something? #IDedchat
A7: learning happens prior, during, and after production. If you are asking how do we assign a grade...well you have to change mindsets about grades. Simple answer you track mastery not points. #IDedchat
A6: such a good Q. I found myself grading the process more than the finished product, the presentation. Several Ss were doing more than I anticipated they could do. The finished product wasn’t perfect but the process was awesome to observe❤️ #idedchat
R6: Here’s the $.10 ? At what point is something perfect? My Ss know that things might meet all criteria, but nothing is perfect. If nothing is perfect, then there is room to continue to improve and learn. It’s the mindset and culture established in the classroom. #IDedchat
R6: I also think that learning takes pace day 1-180. When the child leaves at the end of the semester or year, that’s when things are locked in. Let Ss fix things in their learning until that time comes. Why lock in grades until that point. @Dave_Nagel1#IDedchat
R7: I am so glad I have found a group of educators that have similar thoughts on how education needs to change to meet our Ss needs. Thank you so much for a great discussion tonight. Thanks @averyteach for the great questions and discussion forum. Have a great week #IDedchat
A7: https://t.co/IFuIVTs3L3 is something new to me... Think game maker/block coding/mario brothers. Ss learning it now. We create academic models, stories, and assess next. #idedchat
I look forward to this. It’s the extra inspiration I need to be a better Teacher! PD is a favorite hobby #I’m weird and this is like a weekly PD! #idedchat
