#miched Archive
The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

Q1: According to https://t.co/d28LorU3aV, 15.6% of Ss in MI were chronically absent (2016-17), which equates to over 230,000 Ss. What do you find to be the most common reasons for student absence?
-
Q2: What should a teacher’s role be in the attendance intervention process?
-
-
Q2: In the goal of education for all, schools need to take an active role in encouraging attendance and engaging parents. Every so often school is the balance to a child’s health and safety, unfortunately.
-
Q3: Does your school have a specific attendance intervention program? If so, what does it involve?
-
A3: Our school has awards for monthly attendance, classroom awards for whole class attendance and recognition of perfect attendance at the end of the year. The principal also posts monthly attendance rates.

One more reason MI needs accountability reforms. Opening & shutting schools wks into the yr is irresponsible, disruptive to learning, & falls on the board, Mgmt co & authorizer. This world of willy-nilly opening & closing has to stop. https://t.co/m5QThagtkz

Q4: What do you feel are some key aspects of an effective attendance intervention program?
-
Jumping in late! A4: I think a proactive approach would be to get families involved in more school activities. If families feel apart of the school community attendance would increase
-
Q4: Open and honest communication with parents, family supports when needed, and a focus on the positive
-
A4: the student knowing that they are a part of a community and that someone cares and notices when they are not there
-
C'mon people, this is an important one! Q5: When should the attendance intervention process be started?
-
A5: The first day a student is absent - our school communicate with class dojo, makes for a quick message “hope you’re feeling better - get well soon!”
-
A5: Attendance intervention should start with the first absence; good relationships with the teacher should help in approaching students.
-
A5 I don’t have a set number of absences for this but when it starts to have a negative effect on student learning.
-
A5: Students and families need to know that attendance is important from day one.
-
Q6: Ok, last one. What can schools and/or teachers provide to ensure students with attendance struggles don’t get too far behind?
-
A6: Our Schools all went 1:1 this year, and the students can keep up through the learning management system we use. Still not a replacement for regular attendance, but great for an occasional illness
-
A6: Show your students the love!
