fundamentally changing schools to make them places of learning is not easy. You need to practice it every single day. In real schools, public schools preferably, liberating real children #hacklearning
Hello from SWMO. I taught 8th grade. Have been admin in PK-8 for the last 3 years and next year I will be admin at 7-12 school. Working on my curriculum specialist degree. I love learning and I love kids. #hacklearning
A1 I don’t have specifics, but I know the future will be different. As educators, we need to focus on the human attributes of our learners and foster their resilience, adaptability, and curiosity. If we develop true learners, they can handle the future world! #HackLearning
. @ASCD#Empower18 Conference in Boston is about one month away. #HackLearning will be there w/ cool giveaways for our friends.

A1 My The Future page https://t.co/Y4PBo646u5 “When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen,
those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.” #HackLearning#FutureReady
so more focus on essential learning for life competencies which are more fluid, open, and capable of evolving over time than crystallized skills #hacklearning
A1: I know it won’t be like it is today! Education is constantly evolving so I know that as educators we should be evolving too. By then it’s almost time to start preparing Ss for 22nd Century Skills. 😱 #HackLearning
A1 jobs that are needed in 2050 may not have been even conceived yet, BUT the skills that sts will need for ANY job can be taught today through our standards for literacy & problem-solving ☺️ #HackLearning
A1 I cannot imagine what 2050 will bring but people will need tech skills, ability to collaborate with others, problem solving skills for sure #hacklearning
A1: I know that we can’t even predict what it will be like in 2050. That means we must prepare our Ss for anything. Problem solving beginning with a strong literacy foundation is a must. #hacklearning
A1: I know that in 2050, students will still be more important than robots. Creativity, relationships, and humor will still be important. #hacklearning
A1: So many great points to think about in this article! We need to make sure we’re teaching our children problem solving & human skills. #HackLearninghttps://t.co/jenFhEfMZn
Deep Learning along with a deep understanding of tools. While we can't predict that future, we have a pretty good idea of how it will be built #HackLearning
A1 I don’t have specifics, but I know the future will be different. As educators, we need to focus on the human attributes of our learners and foster their resilience, adaptability, and curiosity. If we develop true learners, they can handle the future world! #HackLearning
A1 I don’t know Anything about what the world will look like but I imagine humans will be the same thinking and learning beings as per always. #HackLearning
A1 I Think first off we have 2 be honest n humble and say we dont know a lot!Content is a great unknown. What we do know is we need innovators, thinkers, n collaborators. Problem seekers will never go out of style. Problem seekers that r equipped problem solving. #hacklearning
In 2050, collaboration will be key, no individual classes but all integrated, no walls in the tradional sense and way more freedom to learn the things that you want to learn #hacklearning
A1: Though we don’t have specifics, some things never change. Kids need skills. Discovery, innovation, problem-solving. Addressing those needs are far great than covering content. #HackLearning
A1: Nobody has a crystal ball to predict what the world will be like in 2050. If we focus on learning and helping everyone in the org to learn how to learn, we will have done good work. Easier said than done #HackLearning
A1: The world in 2050 will be require learners to be flexible, collaborative, informed, connected and digitalized in many ways. Our schools need to be spaces that facilitate V&C in how, where and the best way to learn! Student centered! #HackLearning
A1: In order to prepare for the world of the future, even 2050, we need to focus on our practices today. Sustainable change takes time. Of course, to prepare for the world of the future our schools should at least mirror the world of today- start there. #HackLearning
Are you an educator & ready to shift the narrative about public ed? My new book Burned Out, Beaten Up, Fighting Back: A Call To Action For America’s Public Educators is available in paperback: https://t.co/BodQc4FTqt… & on Kindle Monday February 19. #call2action4ed#HackLearning
A1: It's more about what I don't know that leads me to focus more on MINDSETS than SKILLS. Students will need to problem-solve, communicate, empathize, explore, and take risks. These = college/career readiness in all areas. #hacklearning
A1. I know that we need to #HackLearning so our students’ knowledge can be relevant during that time. Wow. 2050. So I think how times have changed in the last 29 years (my life) and all I know that life is changing rapidly and we need to show our Ss how to THINK and COMMUNICATE.
A1 - the 2050 world ... hard to say except that it will be an evolved version of where we are now ... we need create learning environments/activities that will create the next generation of visionaries ... #hacklearning
A1 #hacklearning We don't really know, do we, but we must teach "how" to think.
Just read this OpEd... Henry Adams didn't know either. https://t.co/lzikDABf3D
A1: We can't predict the jobs but what ever they are students will need to think critically to do them. So our job is to teach our students HOW think, not WHAT to think #hacklearning
agree Sylvia- and know that skills of home, community, and work will be closer together than ever in terms of the essence of what humans have always done well- create, engineer, build, make, collaborate, empathize #hacklearning
Kristen, the problem is that, all too often, education is not evolving. It is still stuck in 1920 with mass instruction, arbitrary time limits, awful spaces #HackLearning
A1: I know it won’t be like it is today! Education is constantly evolving so I know that as educators we should be evolving too. By then it’s almost time to start preparing Ss for 22nd Century Skills. 😱 #HackLearning
A1 Here's one consultancy's view of 2050: https://t.co/5kdL4k0Sza. As for me, I choose to place blind trust in idea that literacy will never go out of style. #hacklearning
A1. I know that our Ss have a far better understanding of 2050 than I do. I am constantly learning from them. Education Isa two way street! #HackLearning
A1. What was that meme making the rounds last week? Instead of preparing them for something, help them prepare themselves for anything. That. #hacklearning
What I know about 2050 is that I don't know much about 2050. So to prepare students to be successful for the future, I need to teach them to be learners and be hacky. #HackLearning
A1: By 2050, we will have cycled through numerous fads and shifts and in pedagogy, but what will remain are the constant skills needed for success => Collaboration, Comunnication, Creation and Citizenship #HackLearning
It may not be evolving as quickly as we would like, but I would say that it is slowly changing. Our goal is to continue to help push that trend in the right direction. #hacklearning
A1:It’s hard to imagine what 2050 will be like. As much as some things have remained stagnant since I started in 1994, I’m amazed at how much really has changed. I did college w/o the internet and my 2nd grade Ss have their own chromebooks. #hacklearning
We have to get Technology in their hands to be learners of 2018. Really empowering students to think and create. Plus teaching them to be good citizens of the world. #hacklearning
A1: Preparing for the unknown means doing what we can to prepare for everything while sticking with what is neccessary. Students need the solid foundation integrated with collaborative skills, understanding of ever evolving tech and "grit"!! #HackLearning
A1 2050 is a mystery! I can be sure it will be incredibly different - as a child in the 60's I couldn't imagine the world I live in now: pure sci-fi! The only thing we can be sure of is that they'll need to be flexible, critical thinkers #HackLearning
I think the definition of "literacy" needs to evolve ... literate in what? Not every kid needs to learn to write a college essay nor does every kid need to learn to code. #hacklearning
A1. We must give our Ss the ability to think creatively, to see problems as opportunity, to ask ?s to find problems we can’t easily see & get after a solution. We need to build up men & women who can see a greater purpose than just meeting their needs. #HackLearning
A1: Nobody has a crystal ball to predict what the world will be like in 2050. If we focus on learning and helping everyone in the org to learn how to learn, we will have done good work. Easier said than done #HackLearning
A2: Rows of desks, no communication, teacher talks at students, students do worksheets, students take a test. No inquiry, no questions, no enjoying of learning.Change that. #hacklearning
A2 Bell schedules, delineated subject areas, grades - all make it easier to manage school, but are they developing life-long learners? We should evaluate each decision to determine if it advances our learners or advances the system. #HackLearning
I also feel we have an epidemic with real confidence in kids. If we start addressing real confidence we can ignite some great experiences. #hacklearning
A1 I also suppose that humans will still want their autonomyto think and be as they want. That they would like to use their personal freedom vs be controlled and mandated. Kids and adults. #HackLearning
As proactive futurists, creating space to engage greater awareness allows for forecasting and assumptions to provide a flair and focus approach forward. #hacklearning
A2: The idea that classrooms have four walls-and all kids stay inside them-we have to allow for flexible learning, use our spaces to nurture Ss academically, emotionally and socially :) figuratively-break down the walls! (Literally if you can!) #HackLearning
A1:It’s hard to imagine what 2050 will be like. As much as some things have remained stagnant since I started in 1994, I’m amazed at how much really has changed. I did college w/o the internet and my 2nd grade Ss have their own chromebooks. #hacklearning
So. Much. EOY assessment focus for these standardized tests! It's one way to show what you know! And one point in time! We need portfolios and reflection journals and physical projects to demonstrate learning over time! #HackLearning
A2 Bell schedules, delineated subject areas, grades - all make it easier to manage school, but are they developing life-long learners? We should evaluate each decision to determine if it advances our learners or advances the system. #HackLearning
A1: Don’t worry too much about 2050. When I left school, nobody anticipated the internet....but I’ve done just fine with a solid foundation, the ability to keep learning, and an open mind.
#HackLearning
A2 the focus on test scores has killed creativity ... it is all about progress monitoring and collecting data ... where is the joy of learning? No matter how many "pep rallies" you have the kids know at the end of the day it is all about that test score. #hacklearning
A2: Schools may need to think more of how to create individual pathways for students. Choice, Creativity, and Authentic Learning for all. #HackLearning
The industrial mindset. We us antiquated methods in antiquated buildings for jobs that either don’t exist or are declining. We need to prepare Ss for what is coming and not what has passed. #HackLearning
#HackLearning Learn the real truth about whats been going on in this country to us. Sickness and the government and FBI knew this ughh https://t.co/ZNcTpcKRy5
A2. We need to start by following our hearts and listening to our student's needs. It is time to get out of the box and get in touch with the world. Give space for critical thinking and innovation #HackLearning
A2: The focus on high stakes tests that drive the curriculum & instruction are one of the biggest barriers! These tests lead our society to reduce students & educators to a singular data point (number) & that is misleading & stifling! #HackLearning
A2 Paradoxically, I'd consider breaking idea that edu system's broken & must be rebuilt from scratch. (This notion freaks people out, puts 'em on defensive, paralyzes prospects for change.) Instead, explore hacks that nudge incrementally, judo flipping constraints. #hacklearning
A2: The more I think about our greatest constraint, the more I think it’s MINDSET. We all have mental models, conscious and sub-conscious, we operate on. Our mental models of education are school-centered. Those need to change to learner-centered Hard work! #HackLearning
A2 sitting in rows listening to an expert ... we need to accept that we, as teachers, are not the “owners” of knowledge but that we too can learn from others — esp our students #HackLearning
A2: That the only thing that matters is the test! You don’t have to take a test when you have a job or work on that test by yourself! Collaboration, communication and course of study that doesn’t work anymore! #hacklearning
A1: Don’t worry too much about 2050. When I left school, nobody anticipated the internet....but I’ve done just fine with a solid foundation, the ability to keep learning, and an open mind.
#HackLearning
A2. We need to redefine what success looks like for teachers. Is it simply test scores? Places n people that r doing great things know that the most valuable skill set is not on the tests and yet still make Intentional plans to address those skills. #hacklearning
In my district we have "Academies" for HS school kids where kids can go to specialize, but my concern is what about the kids who don't get into the academy. What is left for them? #HackLearning
A2: Finding it really hard to pick just one. I think that good teachers can work around many constraints, so somehow developing a future-ready vision/mindset in teachers would be my #1 "hack" & wall to tear down. How? Not sure. #hacklearning
A2: The question of relevance should be front and center at every faculty meeting, every curriculum conversation. It's not about removing elements, but rather rethinking the paradigm. #hacklearning
We need to be much more reflective and cognizant of our own mental models of school...and how much they constrain us to the past and limit future thinking and possibilities. #HackLearning
A2. We must break down the walls that divide disciplines. To build schools from scratch we need an effective interdisciplinary approach where learning happens naturally across content areas. #HackLearning
couldn’t have said it better Dennis - if creativity, critical thinking, and collab are the goal we have work to do to shift learning to that - educate for life not to pass tests #hacklearning
I don’t disagree my friend - those two types of change can be happening simultaneously... change from the surface while changing the roots too! #HackLearning
A2: we must flatten the hierarchy. We must stop thinking we know what all kids need to know. Eliminate: individual subjects, bells, curriculum, age grouping and “seat time.” #hacklearning
Agree - managing makes things easier for us but what expands opportunities for Ss is what will be needed. We need to include Ss voice - they have important things to say that just may change how we ‘do’ school. #hacklearning
A2 Bell schedules, delineated subject areas, grades - all make it easier to manage school, but are they developing life-long learners? We should evaluate each decision to determine if it advances our learners or advances the system. #HackLearning
A2: A shift in traditional assessments and accountability => if schools, teaching and learning are going to move to the future, so should grading! #HackLearning
A2: We are so siloed in education. We need to visit each other’s schools, share lessons & resources, etc. Adults from different places and schools don’t collaborate enough. #HackLearning
A2: I would like to do away with time constraints. For teaching subject matter, on IEPs, Need a better way for everything to blend together in amore natural way. #hacklearning
In most organizations, change an accepted component of the organization (health care, engineering - you can't even work at Starbucks without managing regular changes), why are we allowed to avoid change as educators? #HackLearning
If we think about tweaking, do we limit our vision? Starting from zero offers a different perspective than starting with what we already have. Scary - or not.
Went to the @amazon Go store last night, ordered my Starbucks and checked in for my flight on my phone...all amazing things but....we have to ask ourselves as educators: what does this mean for my students?? How am I going to prepare them for their futures? #tlap#OrEdChat
Brian, I strongly disagree (of course). Our system was designed to fail most students - and it does that every day. Incremental change won't get it done #HackLearning
While I can agree ... I do know that when positions without a college degree can require a certification test taken in isolation ... I believe we need to prepare sts for all situations ☺️ #HackLearning
Okay, there's my answer: Treat teachers like professionals, listen to their voices about what is best for kids, empower them to meet individuals' needs, and give them the training & growth needed to stay on top of best practice. #hacklearning
A2: Schools may need to think more of how to create individual pathways for students. Choice, Creativity, and Authentic Learning for all. #HackLearning
A2 In order for school to be relevant and meaningful for our students we have to examine issues of access and equity at a very basic level. #HackLearning
A1. We must give our Ss the ability to think creatively, to see problems as opportunity, to ask ?s to find problems we can’t easily see & get after a solution. We need to build up men & women who can see a greater purpose than just meeting their needs. #HackLearning
A2: I worry abt the misconceptions that might steer us wrong. Ex. beliefs that tech can personalize better than T’s... when even #EdTech developers now say otherwise: #hacklearning
A Confession and a Question on Personalized Learning https://t.co/jDoS6FEFJj via @educationweek
I worry about that all the time- how does every child get a personal path for learning that builds from their curiosity and interests and learn some of what we adults believe is important for life success?#hacklearning
If we were truly inclusive, all students would be getting what they need without a legal document! All students have individual learning needs. #hacklearning
A2) Get rid of 0-100 grading system, stop averaging formative with summative, Ts quit thinking they need to be the holder of knowledge, stop moving kids by age, introduced second language much earlier #hacklearning
Great point. I think it comes down to a lack of confidence. The more we value the work of educators as a society, the more we can expect them to believe they are capable of meeting the challenges presented to them. #HackLearning
In most organizations, change an accepted component of the organization (health care, engineering - you can't even work at Starbucks without managing regular changes), why are we allowed to avoid change as educators? #HackLearning
Great point ... one I have considered also ... what if a student has a passion/talent in that area .. they are not accepted b/c of test scores in other areas or behavior issues #HackLearning
A1: I have no idea how the world is gonna be, so IMO the best plan is to prepare Ss to deal with the unknown - be creative and critical thinkers, collaborate and have empathy. #HackLearning
A3 Curiosity. If we can keep kids curious about their world - questioning, exploring, experimenting - they will continue to adapt and evolve. #HackLearning
A2 We should figure out a way to use the schedule to out advantage to help Ss grow. 45/50/80 mins at a time is not working anymore. It will be awkward, uncomfortable and odd. But, it should be tried. #HackLearning
Our schools were designed to fail 80% of children. Unless we fundamentally change our system, we cannot get where we need to go https://t.co/qVkFWOJQgX#hacklearning
A2 I think the active SM and Mainstream Media engagement of kids across the country around #DouglasStrong is a statement of their capability to use empowerment to change culture- inside and outside of schools #hacklearning
2050 will bring thousands of pedagogical changes - but what will remain is that schools will be critical in creating citizens of the world => we have to embrace our role in breeding empathy, love and respect. #HackLearning
A3: Tough question, they’d need support to understand learning, become self-motivated, self-directed learners, they’d need to be connected to the digital world, wow, tough question! #HackLearning
I think it’s because of the magnitude of responsibility we carry in the classroom every day. We’re responsible for children & change is also in $$$$ which means tax dollars #hacklearning
In reply to
@MurphysMusings5, @TallTalTeaches, @pammoran
This antiquated notion that “Learning” is somehow measured by all students knowing the same exact information on the same exact day. My iPhone gets patched and updates once or twice a week. Why must students “know it all” by (fixed date)? #hacklearning
Q3: If you woke up tomorrow and the education system was “destroyed” what would you choose to immediately change to meet contemporary needs of learners from age 4 to age 18?
A wise man once said grades are good for eggs and not much else. More importantly we must be sure we are grading what matters rather than what is easy. #hacklearning
Preparation? Look back to history. civics, rhetoric, philosophy. Getting Ss (and Ts) to know their strengths, mitigate weaknesses, & be strong in liberal arts (along with science) as innovations will happen at the intersections #hacklearning
A2: get rid of the idea that the adults Need to control the school day and think more also no the lines of interactive museums, learning libraries and all day maker spaces #HackLearning
I was cleaning out a closet and found a homework packet from my first year teaching....it was 8 double sided pages!?!?!?!!! I am saving it as a constant reminder ha. #hacklearning
Limit & simultaneously direct, perhaps? I *do* value thought experiments like today's #hacklearning chat; I also feel tug of day-to-day practicalities. Thus, I'd like to make room for both ambitious, whole-cloth experimenting & working at edges of existing realities.
A3: a clear goal, right now we don’t really know what an 18 year old should be able to do. We need to redefine what it takes to “graduate.” #hacklearning
we can’t get to 2050 and the changes that are coming from the smart machine age without radical invention IMO and investing in teachers more deeply and intentionally than ever is a must #hacklearning
Yes. I believe it is our duty as educators to expose students to new ideas/content that they may not naturally uncover on their own, but it must be driven by students current interests/understandings. #HackLearning
A3 cross-curricular Learning ... study ENG to communicate, math to problem solve, SCI to wonder, and History to reflect ... on any & all topics #HackLearning
A3: Focus on skills over content; instruction that is student driven as opposed to just curriculum driven; literacy at the core of everything we do; assessment that is part of the journey & not the destination; and joy at the center of all learning! #HackLearning
#hacklearning A2: get rid of the idea that the adults Need to control the school day and think more along the lines of interactive museums, learning libraries and all day maker spaces #HackLearning
A1: Schools of the future MUST include these things:
Student Choice
Collaboration
Creation over Consumption
Passion-Based Learning
https://t.co/cMtCroXRtM#hacklearning
A3: Leadership, vision, collaborative culture, and effort - these interpersonal relationship traits will support learning no matter the system in place or starting over #hacklearning
A3: Interpersonal skills. Learning how to learn. Confidence to figure things out themselves AND seek out help when needed. The same things we want for kids today. #hacklearning
Definitely. I assess constantly. But I don't use tests. Assessment can be done while Ss learn in a number of different ways: conferencing with them, I learn so much about where they are & what I need to teach #hacklearning
A3: Build a curriculum for Ss solely based on real problems and constructing the knowledge to respond to those problems with compassion, intelligence, and respect. #hacklearning
that is the big question Ben ... ids will get "options", but won't have freedom to really choose. can only choose from what is made available. #HackLearning
A3-Media Lieracy. Discerning fake news from relevant information. Adults can’t even do this because we didn’t need to. Our kids need this right now. #hacklearning
Remember hacking jokes cracking
Lectures on you still chating
History lectures sleeping vectors
#HackLearning not even a single factor
Knowledge is Important Not GRADE MARKS
A3 “Our” system needs to shift to “their” system... we need to encourage curiousity in our students, self-advocacy/agency, build skills to help them process and prioritize the massive amounts of information assessable to them... community building/civics, etc. #hacklearning
A3: Focus on skills over content; instruction that is student driven as opposed to just curriculum driven; literacy at the core of everything we do; assessment that is part of the journey & not the destination; and joy at the center of all learning! #HackLearning
Nail on head Greg! Thanks for keeping that on the front burner- we have to consider how we shift curricula, assessment, instruction, resources, space to sustain all children as confident, capable, caring learners #hacklearning
It’s an AND proposition...
knowledge is vital to being creative and innovative, which will be necessary skill-sets in the Exponential Age, but so are empathy and emotional intelligence. Embrace an AND mindset. #hacklearning
A3. Intentional growth.
-Reimage our intent with education.
-Backwards plan 2 purposefully meet that reimage.
-equip all stake holders w tools and resources 2meet that plan.
-have positivity n celebration fill every school n class.
-equity becomes driving focus.
#HackLearning
A2: I would argue that structures need to be put into place to allow teachers to be supported in their own social-emotional journey & in sharing their unique cultural backgrounds. We have to honor the inside of the apple, like they are expected to honor students. #HackLearning
A3: Aw shucks.. First I'd still keep my UM students and colleagues. Love the personal relationships there. Then I'd abandon a curriculum and make learning feel like play every day. Engaged, Empowered, and Fun...Every day. #hacklearning
That is a REALLY hard question, because, honestly, I haven't seen something that works well yet. It needs to be modeled by admin/PD leaders & a culture shift (not just isolated PD), for sure. What ideas do you have? #hacklearning
Can't we do it, Lena?? Can we have more self-directed learning plans with two-week goals, and be sure we check in with each student on a regular basis on those goals?? #HackLearning I'll bet we could if we made it a priority...
Final charge - The challenge from Yoda “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” Now go build something today from scratch for your kids tomorrow. #hacklearning
Aubrey: We have 25 schools we are trying to change fundamentally. Eliminating age-based grades in elementary school, eliminating single teacher classrooms, creating cross-curricular courses #HackLearning
A3 I wouldn't make "The Test" public ed's be-all end-all. Make the test less of a priority, and the floodgates will open with great ideas and creativity from everyone on campus. #HackLearning
Thank you @pammoran & @irasocol and all the amazing #HackLearning chatters for the time re-thinking schools for the future of our learners! Have a super Sunday, and enjoy the long weekend!
A3 a stick, some dirt, and some curiosity. technology doesn't have to be complicated. imagination can be stirred by a few quick sketches in the dirt #hacklearning
A2: I worry about the misperception that innovation needs to mean #edtech or sexy programs/supplements when actually the most proven lever for improving instruction is curriculum. #BecauseResearch#hacklearning
See:
https://t.co/Mtj8PVLlEs
A3: Every child in the U.S. is worth being funded appropriately. Aren't we trying to globalize our thinking? Shift PD to support Ts, fund resources and let's not forget making supports more of a consistent part of the landscape? ( ie. Social work and psyche) #hacklearning
A2 in 1951 Bell Labs engineers were challenged with the prompt “the nation’s phone system has been destroyed, now go build the system we need to replace it.” Just about every phone tech we have today was envisioned by them. what’s our version of that in ed today? #hacklearning
Schools of the future must make an effort to weave student voice and choice into most learning tasks. Genius Hour/Passion Projects are PERFECT for this!!
#hacklearning
A3 Just read a piece quoting John Hattie as saying that teaching teachers how to teach is a sin. The explanation included that teachers need time to collaborating, to listen, to learn from one another. #hacklearning
A3: my first answer was about leadership and this one is on student ownership in learning. It is critical to move from consumption off facts to student creation of learning. This combined with leadership and vision will support starting over https://t.co/iANEQeQy5s#HackLearning
Google 22 century learning. What pops up? Strategies to help schools prepare for a century we've been in for nearly 20 years - AND workforce resources preparing their employees already. Something is wrong with this! https://t.co/tq2Dr3ty5i#HackLearning
When you say, 'Designed to fail most students,' I gloss as, 'designed to prepare some students for times that don't quite exist now,' No doubt, newer, nimbler approaches are needed to prepare *more* students more flexibly. #hacklearning
Brian, I strongly disagree (of course). Our system was designed to fail most students - and it does that every day. Incremental change won't get it done #HackLearning
Q2 schools should not be torn down and built from scratch. They should be fully funded and pilot programs should be replicated. Tear down is sloppy and ill conceived. #hacklearning
#HackLearning early adopters will be feverishly checking our Amazon library page this week, hoping to be the first to grab our new release.
Hint: it could show up any day.
https://t.co/8fvQB7MfAa
Yes - redefine “achievement.” It’s not scoring high on a single test. It’s being prepared to be the citizens this world needs. Let’s agree what that means, then decide how to get 4yos there. Hint: part of the answer is not to quash the traits they already have. #hacklearning
A3: a clear goal, right now we don’t really know what an 18 year old should be able to do. We need to redefine what it takes to “graduate.” #hacklearning
Too many educators focus on the system and lose sight of learning. I hate the question, "How does this help our scores?" My answer is it might not help, but at least I know that students are engaged, working together and are provided with an opportunity. #hacklearning
Join #HackLearning chat Feb 25 at 8:30-9:00am EDT when Tamra Dollar @tamradollar will be guest moderator leading chat on the "hacky" topic of English Learners.
Reading comp and listening comp can be assessed indep of the other. We generally have better LC than RC. And both are dependent on background know. But yes reading comp dependent on decoding, though decoding not sufficient.
isn’t the role of education to basically ensure that the best of who we are as humans gets moved forward into the future? Inventiveness, Community care, Empathy, Narrative of Good ….. #hacklearning
#Facebook new “Protect” feature on #iOS installs #spyware on iPhone/iPad. Facebook prompts users to install Onavo Protect on iOS device for “peace of mind” / “an added layer of security.” BUT It sends data to Facebook/Russian server to collect and analyze user data. #HackLearning
A3: Student-led classrooms, where passion and curiosity are the vehicles to learning skills and concepts and assessment are used to provide feedback and instill growth, not measure the immeasurable - human potential. #hacklearning
A3: Schools rooted in a competent view of families, teachers, and students. If the education system was suddenly destroyed, who says all of the teachers would stay without the infrastructure? #HackLearning
A3: Redefine school structure away from grades and even grade levels and work from collaborative feedback btwn Ts and Ss. Let Ss choose their own journeys with guidance from mentor-As. #hacklearning
A3) Go really old school and teach kids through oral history. Involve them in decision making about what we still have around us and how they can thrive. #HackLearning
A3. Great question! A system that provides personalized learning, Ss who are self-directed & empowered to control their learning, & most importantly educators who care and are deeply invested in the success of every student. #HackLearning
