Hello there!
I am Alberto Herraez. 6th grade teacher at Canyon Creek Elementary (Davis School District)
I am reading "The Behaviour Code" by Jessica Minahan & Nancy Rappaport.
#UTedchat
I’m Michelle. I am an LMETS (Library Media Educational Technology Specialist) in Granite. Currently I am reading Ridley Pearson - just starting Lock and Key. #utedchat
Hi #utedchat, I'm Kiera Beddes ELA in Jordan district and I am currently reading Twain's Feast with @Nick_Offerman I'm only a little into it but I'm LOVING it.
Deborah, Social Studies teacher in Granite school district. I read AP student essays. All. The. Time. Might find a quick fun book for the long weekend though - books are good for the soul. #UTEdchat
When anyone asks for book recommendation, I always start with "What is the last book that you read that you loved?" It gives me something to go on because usually I can find something in the same vibe that they may like. #UTedchat
I loved Schooled by Gordon Korman. I taught it my very first year as an intern and it always have a special place in my heart. Along the same lines, The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt is also very good. #utedchat
Arriving late because of parent teacher conferences! I just finished The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg and a fantastic sci-fi Scarlet Pimpernel retelling called Across A Star-Swept Sea! #UTedchat
I will have to add that one to my list. I would have to say Make it Stick by Peter C. Brown or The Talent Code by Daniel Code really made me revaluate how learning happens in our brains and how I can recreate optimal learning environments in my own classroom #UTedchat
A1: I've been to this great conference called BYU Books for Young Readers in Provo. Every author lays themselves open to tell you how they became an author. Some I loved are Dan Santat and Matt de la Pena! #UTedchat
OMG I LOVE HIM. We read Long Way Down for faculty book club in Sept and it was FASCINATING. He also gave the commencement speech for Lesley University and it's one of my favs. You shoud check it out. https://t.co/6sSQuCmeYh LOVE HIM. #UTedchat

A1 I would love to meet Malcolm Gladwell. I have read all his books, I loved each one. Listening to his podcast makes me feel as though we’ve already met. Not sure if he feels the same way. #utedchat
A1: I've had the chance to meet a lot of my favorite authors at conferences, but if I could sit down and chat with one, it would be Ally Carter. I adore her writing and she is so honest on social media about what a struggle it can be to write. #utedchat
A Star-Swept Sea is so good! The author has another book (For Darkness Shows the Stars) which is a fantastic retelling of Persuasion (which is totally Jane Austen's finest, don't @ me) #UTedchat
A1: Do they have to be living? Because in my perfect world, I'd love to speak with Dr. Suess! I mean, people forget about hiss political cartoons prior to and during WW II and he's just fascinating. I loved hearing from Ray Bradbury back in the day too... #UTEdchat
You can! Either via by sharing videos (students love Jason Reynolds) or live video chat! We've had Marissa Meyer, Obert Skye, and others live via Skype! #UTedchat

But then I assume you do mean living people... So it would be neat to hear from @kate_germano who wrote Fight Like a Girl, which I quite liked. Or @LynnSherr who wrote the biography of #SallyRide I just read recently. I need more fiction in my life too though. #UTEdchat
A1: My favorite authors are @neilhimself and @terryandrob (RIP). I've seen Neil Gaiman twice when he's come to UT. But I would love to sit down to dinner with him and discuss EVERYTHING with him. *happy sigh* #UTedchat

He would be fascinating too, though I must admit I have to take issue with some of his conclusions. That would make for an interesting conversation. #UTEdchat
Obert Skye came to my sixth grade class right before the first Leven Thumps was released. It was almost 14 years ago but still one of my favorite memories. #utedchat

Have you listened to his podcast Revisionist History? I've only listened to one episode but it completely changed my view of Winston Churchill. #fascinating#UTedchat
Wow! Time is flying! On a different note: Q2: National School Library Standards @aasl#SharedFoundations with @ISTE. One is collaboration. What collaboration do you value? #UTedchat
What's the genre and the gist? I'm looking for something light and fast over the long weekend. You know, to take the edge off when I need a break from working on my taxes... #UTEdchat

A2: I love collaborating with teachers who are as passionate as me about problem-solving and student learning. I don't have energy for whining, but I always have time for problem solving. Often times that's cross-discipline (how can we help them write?) but not always. #UTEdchat

A1: #UTedchat Sharon Draper author of Out of my mind. I loved that book. It changed my perspective on our students with IEPs and 504s. She gave a voice to so many and illustrated the importance of technology for our non verbal students

A2: My teachers...I love supporting them by teaching their students research for a specific project they are working on. Just today I was with a modern history class that is going to be filming documentaries, show them where to find primary sources! #UTedchat
A2: Collaboration with the T's at my school is critical to the library- I see the library as an extension of what is happening in the classroom and need that collaboration for it to successful #utedchat
Foot soldier of Birmingham and Mrs Buchanan's period of adjustment are extremely thought provoking. Will get you thinking. Both worthy of their own #UTedchat
Yes! And I did think the dystopian setting worked really well for it and Eliot's situation. I almost wish I'd read it second, because I think Stars laid out the world a bit better. #utedchat
Yes! I love meeting with my other high school librarians in Alpine...we're lucky that we get to meet almost every Monday. I steal all my best ideas from them! :) #utedchat
A2: Collaboration within the classroom is important but also we need to provide our students with activities that give them the opportunity to collaborate globally. In this day and age, it is crucial for our students to know how to interact with people around the globe #UTEdChat
YES! I love the PLN around the world I meet in Adobe Education classes. We had a virtual meeting during school hours and so they met my Ss! #UTedchat Let's get Ss together, too!
A2: Here in West Wendover we have CFG's aka critical friends group, we meet to discuss strategies, engagement protocols, literature reviews and dilemmas #utedchat
Do you have Google Hangouts? That can be a fun way to have a virtual collaboration meeting...we've done that when we couldn't meet in person. #utedchat
@KBeddes I don't even know anymore since I hardly ever read for fun anymore. I tried to read Dandelion Wine & Martian Chronicles (Bradbury) this summer and gave up on both. Holes was good and fun. Couldn't put down Lord of the Rings a few winters ago. #UTEdchat
A2 collaboration with colleagues love my UEN PD team. Trust their opinions and ideas. They get me to see past my blind spots and challenge my thinking #utedchat
A2: I value any collaboration where I can work with passionate creative people. My PLC group at school is pretty great, my #utedchat fam is fantastic, and I've found working with other depts/staff (like librarians...) has been really helpful too. #UTedchat
A3: I love the librarian from when I was a child, Ms. Lowe. She trained me to be a library helper and when I told her I needed something challenging to read, she handed me Little Women, which was amazing! #utedchat
Have you ever read anything by Harry Harrison and his Stainless Steel Rat series? He is one of my favorite sci-fi authors and he is similar to Bradbury in his satire of human foibles. #UTedchat
A3 I think it’s a tie with all our librarians here tonight. One of my favorite librarians and people is Jo Thompson from Hunter High. She was a terrific mentor when I was a young English teacher! #utedchat
Q4: Another @aasl#SharedFoundations is inquiry. How do you develop your students' abilities to think critically and solve real world problems? #UTedchat
A3: I loved my junior high librarians. They made the library so welcoming. Something that I didn't realize was so important until I switched schools and realized that wasn't always the case. Libraries matter. Access matters. #UTedchat
A4: Maker Space! We have monthly and on-going challenges. We also have materials that students can check out at lunch and explore on their own. #utedchat
A4: One way to encourage critical thinking is to integrate multiple texts with similar themes or ideas. Literature, non-fiction, poems, songs, articles, all of it. #UTedchat
A4: For real world problems, there are so many fantastic picture book biographies to share with students- and it leads to discussions about people's lives were like, what challenges they overcame, what we can learn from their lives #utedchat
Yes! It's so magic to see students create and achieve things they didn't think they could. And if we can provide those tools/resources that students might not otherwise have access to? So important! #UTedchat
Great comment Emily. Love the role librarians play in helping students learn media literacy. We need kids to think critically and avoid ”fake news” #UTedChat
A4: Developing the critical thinking and the poblem solving skills of our students is not a one-day thing. It is a school culture, a disruptive approach that educators need to implement in their classes.
#Utedchat
A4: For real world problems, there are so many fantastic picture book biographies that I love reading with my elementary students that lead to discussions about people's lives, how they persevered, how it relates to our lives #utedchat
It’s hard to explain on Twitter but they love the robots of course! We do several challenges with Spheros and Ollies. They also love Legos and Keva planks. DIY LED Christmas cards were a hit. #utedchat
Q5: School libraries are not only the heart of the school, but the door to a global learning community. How do you connect your students to their community and the world? #UTedchat
A5: A critical way to connect students with the world is by providing diverse books for S's to read- both windows and mirrors- to other people's lives #utedchat
