#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Call me dedicated. Tuning in to chat tonight AFTER my 2nd art show. Love this topic! Great time of year to spice things up with a new GREAT challenge! #K12ArtChat
Preface: When designing creative challenges you need to think about the learning outcome that you want your students to get from the challenge. They are great for introducing new skills or even just to help boosts your students creativity. #k12artchat
A1 We often reflect in my art studio but doing art shares with the class and table discussion in which I pose questions like, “how did you think critically during today’s challenge/lesson” or “How did you problem solve today?” #k12artchat
Problem Solving (Critical Thinking), Developing Creativity, Embracing Culture, Working in Collaboration, Utilizing Creativity and Clear Communication have been the hallmarks of my Science Classrooms for ten years now.
#K12ArtChat
A1: I started creating reflection questions for each project, with my Sculpture classes; students have to respond to after each lesson. It helps me understand where they had trouble and what they learned and like. #k12artchat@GrundlerArt
#K12ArtChat A.1. I used to think of my own essential questions. Looking at the new curriculum today I see the essential questions are already there. Can't wait for next year.
A2 art challenges are great because you can use lots of items you have! I often use things I can find at dollar tree like pipe cleaners, styrofoam goods, google eyes, cardboard, etc along with scraps and odds and ends from our class #k12artchat
A1 - With my El artists, sketching multiple ideas before drawing or painting is new to them. Even though it draws out a project timeline, I think this is so important. #k12ArtChat
A2: Okay, this from the *brilliant* art teacher Lauren LaFontaine - her challenge ideas are amazing! Kinetic Wind Sculptures: https://t.co/qfIMcBaUNJ#k12artchat
A1: so many of what we do in our studio has to do with problem solving! My 1st gr learning abt artist Reggie Laurent abstract, organic shapes & patterns. #K12ArtChat
A2: Also, teaching artist Jeff Mather uses a "lost and found tinker table" for challenges. Random bolts, leftover parts, even paper scraps are left out and students design with them. Incredible creativity happens! #k12artchat
A2 I like for my Ss to use paper because their are so many things you can do with it. So simple. For example making a cellphone speaker out of paper and tape. Sounds easier than done. We would then vote on how well it amplified the sound. #k12artchat
A2: Especially at end of year STEAM challenges! Here’s our 1st graders beng engineers. All engaged and wanting MORE! They reflected on what they could have done better and congratulated the winners! @k12artchat
A2 - At this point in the year, I have so many scraps left. I love using paper scraps for texture challenges. Roll, tear, crumple, cut, fold, twist! Find a way to manipulate the texture to create your art. #K12ArtChat
A2: I like to use lots of different kinds of materials (even digital). bc it only leads to more problems to be solved. #K12ArtChat@IDEOU#designthinking
A3: As a firm believe in choice and TAB, I feel that students need the change to explore so they can build their creative capacity. It helps them develop skills to be a better artist and when they try and fail often they get better at taking risks. #k12artchat
A1: In addition to engaging students in conversations about their work, I ask students to complete self-evaluations which includes a reflection about their projects. Often students will share in writing things they have difficulty verbalizing. #k12artchat
Ss will always stay with what's comfortable. Our job is to guide them out of being comfortable into something new. Taking risks can lead into new ideas and new ways of thinking. #k12ArtChat
A3: It is always fun to 'switch it up' so Ss don't get stuck in a rut. It makes them problem solvers in a world of being spoon fed all the time. #K12ArtChat
A3: Here's the thing: the best indicator for success is the amount and types of opportunities our students have (Gladwell's Outliers shared this). This is naturally baked into any design challenge and risk. It's our responsibility to offer it.. #k12artchat
A3: Challenges I believe allow students not to not feel afraid; some students just freeze or are afraid to even start a lesson/project. A challenge somehow makes it fun; yet still important. #K12ArtChat@Artguy76@GrundlerArt
A4 Many times the challenges I present to my students are presented and not necessarily meant to be collaborative. In some cases I do team challenges. But many times natural collaboration happens and S’s want to work together or help each other #k12ArtChat
A4: Hmm....this is a good question. I tend to embed and cultivate a culture of collaboration. But sometimes, that can be difficult with some students. That's when I purposefully use a collaborative challenge - to help build those skills. #k12artchat
A4: I tend to do more collaborative challenges. I think it provides students a way to socialize and get to really know each other. They begin to build bonds even if just for my class, especially when the class is grades 9-12 #K12ArtChat@GrundlerArt@Artguy76
A4 I try to balance both. If the Ss are working independently then we can create more ideas, but sometimes collaborations happen and that's how you get Ss teaching students. #k12ArtChat
A2 I also do a “ Chopped” app cercise where their supplies are a surprise! They pick the bag and have 30 mins to explore, experiment then share! #K12artchat
I always love these - personally, it fuels my competitive tendencies. Even if I'm the one running it, I still get that adrenaline. Super fun. #K12ArtChat
A3 - Helping Ss take chances in safe subjects like art (where leaps and falls are encouraged and celebrated) helps them scaffold for taking chances in more high stakes subjects. #K12ArtChat
A5 Erin and I often throw ideas around together or share ideas of what we have done in our classroom. I have seen a few on The Teaching Artistic behavior page on FB or exploring ideas that help promote skills I want my students to learn. #k12ArtChat
A4: love love love collaborating...planned and spontaneous! We have 2 third grade girls workng on one painting this week! All on their own! Another kinder ffriend went and worked with another who was stressed. Fills my ❤️ #K12ArtChat
A5 I like to look at art on Instagram, museum trips, talk with other art teachers, and @Colossal art has great art to get inspiration from. #k12artchat
A5: share any links you have to awesome challenges! What a fun night...Great ideas and sharing everyone! I’m glad you joined @RoweInArtand I! Check out these challenges if you get a chance https://t.co/AlDw5eaQnT#k12artchat
A4 - I’ve been thinking over a couple of challenges... 1. playground/amusement ride challenge- design a 3D idea with paper and 2. game board challenge - design a game to play that is based on an idea you’ve learned this year in art. These could work for teams. #K12ArtChat
A4: We do a little of both. Some students hate working with others, but occasionally collaboration and comprise is good for them. Others would never work on their own if they could pick. I often ask students to develop a few ideas on their own before collaborating. #k12artchat
I've been buried in writing and course creation for a MONTH. 500 pages and counting. It's so good to connect with the world again and get a little break! #k12artchat
