#miched Archive
The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

Excited you two are leading the conversation this evening!
Thanks! Excited to be asked :)
Q1 This August will be the Leadership Mindshare for ALL educational leaders. What are some reasons to attend summer conferences?
Steve are your tweets protected? They are not coming up in the stream.
Does learning stop for the summer? Share your thoughts
Hi ! Catherine - World History teacher from SoCal but I'll be in MI in 11 more days.
A1 Summer conferences...when you are out of your school fog and can learn new things to energize you for the new year!
I love early August conferences...perfect for generating ideas and excitement for the new school year! https://t.co/C14RNEpnbF
Q1 This August will be the Leadership Mindshare for ALL educational leaders. What are some reasons to attend summer conferences?
A1: Summer learning is about choice. I find conferences tend to be collaborative and conversational.
Great to see you and ! Thanks for joining us tonight.
Can be a great way to bridge reflection from year to planning for the next.
I personally look forward to summer learning. A time to focus on improving myself.
Sarah from Ann Arbor fresh off our grad ceremony tonight! Multitasking through tonight
Glad you are coming to MI
Tons to see & do!
Happy to be here! The Leadership Mindshare is on my list of possibilities for the summer...hopeful!
A1: Without having papers to grade & meetings to attend...summer conferences are about recharging & leaving inspired.
you should join us - it will be great!
School Fog...I hear you loud and clear! Thanks for joining in
We have property on Old Mission. Looking forward to enjoy the
agreed - so difficult to focus on conferences, etc when school continues on.
Summer is a great time to dream, feel like my mind is wide open to new ideas
A1: reflecting over the year & my mind is thinking about changes that I want 2 make. Conferences allow me 2 make these changes real!
Right?! Once the year starts you are often times just holding on while the ride zooms on!
I love this. Perfectly worded. RT Summer is a great time to dream, feel like my mind is wide open to new ideas
Would you say summer is more for dreaming or doing? Thoughts?
Can you share one change you are contemplating?
For me summer is doing what I dreamed during the school year. Although for admin that "summer" is much shorter!
A1: I work year-round, but I love summer conferences for networking, dreaming & doing!
Yes. Too often the year begins and we become very responsive.
I've never worked in a year-round school, but I wonder if it is different in those schools?
What is one conference you are looking forward to?
My "doing" is more recreational, personal. I dream, plan professionally until we start getting back in Aug https://t.co/D85SimTc4J
Would you say summer is more for dreaming or doing? Thoughts?
I've been wanting to go paperless for a couple years. Attending the conference today gave me gr8 ideas!
I think in some ways it would have to be.
Tara is amazing, I am blessed to work with her!
I stand and applaud you! PAPERLESS, YES!
their breaks are much more frequent and summer is much shorter. That would be a big change.
For me? Mostly dreaming...with a little bit of doing that couldn't get done during the school year.
In my mind, sounds fabulous ;-)
Q2: Share one aspect of yourself that you are aiming to improve in the coming school year. What will you do to grow?
Where is the aforementioned Tara?
accomplished that goal a couple of years ago. And found I had to back off a bit. Some Ss needed paper
Share one dream? Love to get a glimpse of your mindset.
Paperless isn't for everyone. I am paperless in my office but still provide paper for staff
if you have any tips for doing this in an elementary classroom let me know!
Summer gives T's a chance to recharge and therefore inevitably want to learn more!
tough call, can't go to that many this summer, bummed to miss esp. But participating virtually in a few!
A2 I would like to be more consistent with blogging abt what happens in my classroom. I use Instagram but it's not enough.
Do you have devices? If yes, it becomes about opportunity and doing. Possibly "flip" some areas for parents to see it.
Recharging is crucial when you give it EVERYTHING!
that is a great goal. Is the blog for you or parents or both?
Q2 continue to provide project based learning, combining content
A2: Learning 2 make observations more useful 4 Ts, plan innovation like maker, read 2 improve ldrshp skills https://t.co/7y9YWxdlJ9
Q2: Share one aspect of yourself that you are aiming to improve in the coming school year. What will you do to grow?
Love to have you join the Mindshare in Grand Rapids. cc
Do you share blogs with parents?
What is the best online seminar learning you will have this summer.
I know that it's going to be a huge shift for my Ss and parents. Need to take baby steps.
BRAVO! Learning through inquiry and exploration.
A2: organization/efficiency... so I can focus more time on Ss learning
absolutely. It would be amazing to have you there.
That is quite possibly one of the hardest things to master. Makes such a difference!
I hear that! Evals dominated my final 4 weeks of school.
Q2: Better developed year-long plans so communication is timely for classrooms and buildings.
Terrific goal! I can see you are focused on improving for a pedagogical improvement.
I'm part of our districts next generation cohort & we have chrome books. It's important 2 b intentional w the tech.
I will have to check it out and run it by my director.
I want to learn more abt the history of TC & Old Mission. Eventually would love to join the historical society...
you can bring your director or someone from your district for free w/your registration!
Yes. Some use tech as a babysitter. The potential is endless.
Not specifically. I use IFTTT to push it out to my followers in Twittersphere. Do you blog?
Good for you. Understanding the why makes a huge difference.
Or have tech present, but do not use...
It's a bit cathartic but mostly reflective. I like to write.
Q3 Share your favorite quote and why you believe in it.
I do blog. I share with teachers & other educators. Still trying to fine tune the message. I wish more people blogged.
A3: I have such a difficult time with "Favorite". I may have to share a couple of quotes!
I've been reading up on the history of the area. Super interesting - esp. the Civil War part.
A3 "I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better." -Maya Angelou
Hope some of our & friends can join us for at 8CT as we reflect & share resources
A3 If you think you can, you will. If you think you can't, you're right.
Hey just got home from picking daughter up from swim practice. Hope to jump in soon!
Whoa! It's been way too long since l I've caught a great !
A3: Fav quote is "we are all delightful deviations from the norm" - honors the beauty in our variability and unique strengths
Agreed! I love getting insight into how ppl think & learning new things along the way.
Lets GO! Join in Derek. Share your favorite quote...
I've never heard that. It is beautiful!
A3: "do or do not, there is no try." - Yoda
I love that your quote goes with your Twitter pic - well played!
Relationships & classroom culture is most important. Learning will only happen if Ss trust & believe u care. https://t.co/qETm9h81cp
A3 "I release the need to determine how things 'should' be" - as a control freak it's kinda my mantra
Too many times the easy wrong wins out over the hard right. sadface
Q4 The Leadership Mindshare aims to help others network & grow their PLN. Why is this critical to ALL forms of leaders?
Q4 The Leadership Mindshare aims to help others network & grow their PLN. Why is this critical to ALL forms of leaders?
My favorite quote when I was secondary principal- we need to help Ss create themselves, not find themselves https://t.co/BGUfOVnU8R
We need more courageous people in this world!
I'm going to bugging you and and big time now that I've joined the admin world!
that is a really great way of looking at it.
GHO, Skype...Voxer...you name it!
A3 if u don't like the way the world is, u change it. U have an obligation to change it. U just do it one step at a time.
A4: We can't do it alone. It takes a village. How do u grow if ur not challenged in thinking?
A4: networking is how I get my best ideas, learn, and take back ideas. Also future projects!
Sarah, how can we encourage more to see this?
Sounds about right... : )
I love it! I want my Ss to play around with Typorama & inspirational quotes next year...
A4: Leadership isn't a formula. No silver bullets. Our PLN gives us a playbook of creative alternatives we synthesize when needed.
My PLN helped me take risks, have confidence in my leadership, and challenged me to grow. Life changing! https://t.co/22cvDfEqJe
Q4 The Leadership Mindshare aims to help others network & grow their PLN. Why is this critical to ALL forms of leaders?
A4: Having a PLN reminds me of the quote a shared. There is danger in a single story. Perspective comes from sharing & understanding
We need a lot more AWESOME!
A4: the vast majority of great ideas are remixed or borrowed from other great ideas, a PLN grows that library of resources
A4: There is no way to be the expert with all we are required to do in education. Building a network of experts is how I do my job.
Why do so many look for and expect to find a "silver bullet?"
So many wonderful answers for Q4 - wow!
where the heck has you been!
You're right...but you had the DRIVE to take a risk. How do we get others to stretch themselves?
Easy Smart...that's my boy!
or get them to understand the necessity?
A4 Education is not in a vacuum.
encourage districts to support PD & orgs to look for ways to provide best bang for buck! Also strategically schedule
Lot's of pressure to be "perfect" in education and especially ed leadership - silver bullet would be nice ;-)
Hitch your wagon to a star.
Yes. I would add that the best BANG is personalized and continuous.
A4 The power of a group coalescing around a shared vision is ridiculously powerful
I'll be joining the family of Grandville Christian Elementary School!
I would also add continuously network to that
I'm chuckling. You're right. Not a lot of patience for letting individuals rebuild.
I'm at a Catholic school. Let me know if I can help!
Halftime activity! Share a pic of a great moment that occurred this year...tell about it.
Good ? My answer: Modeling, be positive, build from strengths, safe environ where failure is OK, baby-steps https://t.co/oy1hx4C7ul
You're right...but you had the DRIVE to take a risk. How do we get others to stretch themselves?
A4: Thank you for demonstration the answer to Q4! The power of https://t.co/GJOOHZSAyP
I'm at a Catholic school. Let me know if I can help!
definitely! I'm hoping to catch the mindshare leadership conf in August!
I'm counting on you! We need your positivity.
My mother use to tell that when I was growing up and I have always tried to.
We need to finish strong! Share a great pic from this year and let's make the last stretch meaningful.
Great stuff, RJ! That was a POWERFUL movement.
Students as explorers! Love IT!
TOMMY! Yes. Thanks for sharing your voice my friend.
Our students are very fortunate to have so many educators planning such great things for them!
can be applied to many situations
Donated cleaning supplies 2 school in Detroit, made great connection with school. Our Ss felt amazing https://t.co/1o3x50FuGm
I love that! It looks so student-led.
I'm glad you're here, Tom!
It was 100%. They were fantastic.
Q5 coming up in 1 minute...
Cool pic! So important to remember the positive moments that occurred during the year.
looking forward to seeing my friends when I'm out for & in July
I need to take a look at this later - I am crazy about sketchnotes! (When others make them!)
Q5 One of the Mindshare pillars is innovation. When you hear this word, what does it mean to you? Explain.
Hope you've been practicing your Corn Hole skills.
I've been practicing...and I still stink.
If you have iPads, I highly recommend . I'm a doodler so I love .
are you joining us for on 7/13? In Jackson
A5. For me innovation=creating.
we do have iPads. I need to let go of needing it to look perfect and just do it!
Providing tools for students to be more innovative, is innovation for me. https://t.co/HF8lDWljVE
Q5 One of the Mindshare pillars is innovation. When you hear this word, what does it mean to you? Explain.
succinct and to the point. So true!
Q5 Innovation equates to creativity for me. Finding new ways of doing things. Macgyver-esque
I'll just be going to . I'm coleading a cohort with starting 7/13.
A5: Create, inspire, share - innovation means learning & dreaming, acting
and the knowledge to utilize those tools.
A5: This year, we had our STUDENTS nominate their parents for recognition, and honored them at school assembly. Never done before!
Can't wait to meet you there!
That is a simple way to put it. I usually add...designing, developing, enhancing, creating & tweaking! Innovators DO.
Bingo! There is no perfect time. Everything will never be just right. Just get started! https://t.co/2uYeZRTHjM
we do have iPads. I need to let go of needing it to look perfect and just do it!
A5: not just tech, but looking at doing things differently. Starts with honestly evaluating what isn't working
A5: Innovation = Intentional Serendipity that is Necessary, Functional and Flexible.
I like to quickly do a sketch & then afterwards add more details before sharing. Your Ss will LOVE sketchnoting!
Inspire! Students inspire me. Nice addition.
. Thank You - as you know the kids each of us get to work with across are AMAZING:)
Q6 coming up in 1 minute....
Awe, that beautiful face, and the words of my education guru
YES! Great idea. This is powerful to celebrate the behind the scenes difference makers.
so much of what we do should start with evaluating what isn't working.
That's exactly what I was thinking! We were channeling MacGyver at school today.
I am a girl of simple words Mr. Gilpin :)
A5: Innovation is what happens when principals give teachers the freedom to be creative without fear of failure.
A5: Innovation is HARD, because it means risk. Current "reforms" discourage risk. Looking for "safe" places to experiment.
I think been just found his Halloween costume! Never too early to get it just right!
Q6 We can all agree that educational is evolving. What excites you most about education right now?
Awesome idea!!! https://t.co/NqsZMBoO3h
A5: This year, we had our STUDENTS nominate their parents for recognition, and honored them at school assembly. Never done before!
A6 I'm excited that technology is forcing the Powers-that-Be to understand the need to allow creativity back in the classroom.
A6: The change in how we are growing as educators. Sit & Get PD is dying, and educators are growing more b/c of it
Culture and Trust are HUGE! I always say, "Let the Professionals be Professional."
If you only knew! Reading the nominations written by students brought tears to my eyes. So authentic! https://t.co/1M7pxXGpka
But the costume has to be MacGyvered as well...
❤️ that we're empowering Ss in learning & teaching 21st century skills..they aren't just a test score https://t.co/whaZpc2WP3
Q6 We can all agree that educational is evolving. What excites you most about education right now?
I think I have some chewing gum and a paper clip I can lend you.
Q6 social emotional learning
A6: While the instructional shifts in new Mi Science Standards present challenges, great place to change who owns the learning. Ss!
Q6 also fostering mindfulness in the classroom
I think what is most exciting is that education has no choice BUT to change, new ideas, new approaches.
A5: One more. Innovation =
Last Q... What excites you in education RIGHT NOW? GO...
A6: education is beginning to move in a direction that best prepares Ss for life outside/after of school.
something that wasn't happening until just lately!
A6: all the possibilities. There is so much that can be done now. Ways to engage Ss and deepen learning https://t.co/oKXsbI9LJs
I feel like we are finally the ones leading the change!
Yes, but not everyone stretches themselves in same way...let's not impose how we learn best on colleagues https://t.co/4QThSElb4Q
Will we be able to get EVERYone to stretch themselves? Should that be a measure of success?
A6: career pathways for Ts & SBG & competency-based for Ss
Last A: How social media, especially Twitter, eliminates borders. Connections and learning are 24/7 and global.
A6: Place based learning excites me. Learners who positively impact community.
is very exciting and will have Ss doing great things!
A6: Making, MakerSpaces, MakerClubs...excite me and give me hope for the future of education. https://t.co/TmVBlYy0GY
Last gasp at
Share what excites you in education right now.
, we have an incredible opportunity to show our Ss how to use social media for purpose and :) :) :)
Love summer rules for his kiddos.Making something every day. Struggling personally with what to make.
Yes! Watched this as we were talking about our why and creating our 30-second elevator story https://t.co/3qzjr6NU83
Every T & Admin should be growing, but they start in different places & learn in different ways. Sound familiar?
